Racing, Sailing, Future President, And More *Open Thread*

There are two more ports of call I want to mention from the big cruise, and a first for a cruise ship on our last sea day. Before I get to that, though, I do want to mention the continued brouhaha over Obamacare. Obama and his team are now claiming victory regarding the website for reasons I simply cannot fathom (h/t to my aunt for the link). It is still a piece of crap, people still don’t know what they are getting, and people are still being forced off their good programs for crappy ones. What’s to celebrate there? Amazing what the Democrats are now seeing as “success,” isn’t it?

And then there is the whole Constitutionality issue of what Obama is doing. There was a hearing on the Hill yesterday on this very concept, with some high-powered authorities speaking to this. Jonathan Turley, a Constitutional Law professor at Georgetown (a REAL professor, not some part-timer who got his position as a personal favor) had this to say:

[…] “I believe the president has exceeded his brief,” George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley testified.

“The president is required to faithfully execute the laws. He’s not required to enforce all laws equally or commit the same resources to them,” he said. “But I believe the president has crossed the constitutional line.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Uh, yeah. That’s what we’ve been saying. But, as Hot Air points out, Turley is a liberal, and HE is saying this about Obama. That is telling indeed, isn’t it?

Well, this crapola is harshing my cruise buzz, so let’s get to some photos. Our next stop on our trip was Philipsburg, St. Maarten. We didn’t go far while we were there because our excursion was right in the harbor. I have to say, this is one of the top three excursions I have EVER done (the other two would be the Deadliest Catch boat in Alaska, and a tie between the Mushers’ Camp in Alaska, and whale watching in Alaska).

What is this amazing excursion, you may ask? That would be racing America’s Cup 12 meter sailing yachts. No, really – we did. One of the yachts was the Stars and Stripes, with which Captain Connors won back the Cup in the mid-80’s. The other two were Canadian yachts. Now, I have to admit, this is one of those things that I knew was going to be hard on me physically with my knees and back, but I didn’t care. Sometimes, you just have to do things for the sheer joy of it, and trust me – this was a very joyous, intense, demanding, and AWESOME event. I was the time keeper, counting down the 6 minutes until the race began in earnest. What a freaking blast it was. Here are some of the yachts in which we raced:

This was our captain. He was exactly the kind of salty sea dog one would want in a race. He was also very competitive, another major plus:

And yours truly on the sailing yacht with some of my fellow “crew” members:

What a total blast we had. We lost by one or two SECONDS. Agonizing, that, but oh, such a great time we had!

Our final port of call was St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. We did a catamaran sail and snorkel trip. I have no photos of this trip, though. Since we knew we were going to be out on the water, and things would likely get wet (they did), I didn’t take one. But, I have a great story to tell you from this trip.

We had just gotten underway with sails up, sitting out on the deck of the vessel, when my partner and I caught on to a young man talking to one of the crew members, a young, attractive woman from the US. We heard him telling her that he wanted to be an astronaut, wanted to be president, and restore funding to NASA. The crew member said, “I don’t even know you and I’d vote for you. You’d have to be better than what we have now!”

This young man is 12 years old. Yep, 12. He is from Montana, and continued to discuss with her all of the things Obama is doing wrong, including three different parts of the Constitution he has violated while in office. He was on a roll, I tell you, and really had all the facts down pat. It was pretty impressive, I have to say! So, if in about 30 years or so, a man from Montana is running for president, he may very well be this young sailor we had on our excursion!

But that wasn’t all. Later on, as we were returning to the harbor after our snorkel adventure, this same crew member and a few other young Americans on the tour were talking about the educational system in our country and how it is promoting mediocrity. They had quite a lot to say about where things are with the educational system in this country, and none of it good. They were VERY frustrated with how it has changed and where it is now.

I have to say, it was pretty heartening to hear these young people discuss these issues, and with some depth to their discussions. There may be hope yet…

Okay, as promised, here are some of my favorite towel animals our steward made for us:

As you can see, this little one stole one of the mints left on our pillow:

And this one was monkeying around:

Aren’t those fantastic? So creative, I think. Love those creatures!

Last, but most definitely not the least, is a first for a cruise ship. It was a flash mob proposal pulled together by a group from, including my partner, the NCL Sun cruise director, and the dancers from the ship:

Isn’t that something? Made me cry. Get this – just three days before this was to take place, Brian had said to Warren, the one who had put this thing together starting months ago, that he didn’t have a romantic bone in his body. I guess now he knows he is VERY romantic!

So, that was our cruise. I have some other things I want to write about prior to my surgery, and I will include some other photos of the beautiful planet on which we live.

In the meantime, hope you enjoyed this brief travelogue. This is an Open Thread!

Great photo of you, Miss Cuz! What a trip!
LOVE those towels—I can’t wait to show the boys…And wow! What a wonderful outpouring of affection seen in the flash mob and the proposal….Just terrific…I can see why it brings people to tears….
Thanks so much for sharing your trip with us!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks, Cuz’n! 😀 We had a blast, I’ll tell ya. And yes, there was a great outpouring of affection, but there is always one person, and that one person went after them once the proposal was done. He demanded that the Cruise Director let him have the microphone for 5 minutes (he didn’t get it), and someone told me he had gone to the rehearsal room and pulled out each of the male dancers telling them they were going to go to hell and crap like that. Talk abt missing the message of Jesus! Sigh.

But that did not put a damper on the guys’ day! 🙂

Oh, and here are a few more towel animals for the boys:

      • Cindyindie Says:

Oh, that’s so distressing that someone tried to ruin the occasion.
Good for the Cruise Director for denying the microphone!
I understand why some Christians at black churches and white fundamentalist churches are vehement about homosexuality. That’s the way they read and understand the Old Testament (but they still eat shellfish!!). But I will never condone or accept people being rude, hateful and “un-Christian”.
You’re right—they totally missed the point of the Christ.
        Earth to fundies!! Hello!

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yes, it is distressing, and it sounds like this man has a HUGE chip on his shoulder, especially if he is going to the dancers’ rehearsal and berating them. How he thinks that would change ANYONE’S mind is beyond me, especially since he was preaching a message of hate instead of love. For heaven’s sake, he was supposed to be on a CRUISE, where people go to relax and unwind, and count on the staff/crew of the ship to do so. That they would be treated in such a disrespectful manner says WAY more abt this guy than them, IMHO. People. Sheesh.

Thank heavens people didn’t let him spoil the proposal.

          • Cindyindie Says:

It’s a funny thing, but as I was watching the video, I kept thinking: “How wonderful that people are so accepting nowadays, and on an entire ship, no less!”…..I should’ve known there’d be someone ready to try and spoil it!

the winging it story was printed on black Friday but somehow it was missed by MSM. Until Megan Kelly spoke about it and then most of America found out about it

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thank HEAVENS for Megyn Kelly. She is really shaking things up with her show, her reporting, and her interviews. I hope people see what a huge debacle this is, and how incredibly hypocritical Obama is for bailing out an industry he has been lambasting. Oh, and with OUR TAX DOLLARS, I might add, just to prop up his abysmal failure of a policy. Nice…

    • Katherine B. Says:

I just saw that news about Bashir. As someone pointed out (I think on Fox) his disgusting comments were not made off the cuff. They were programed into the teleprompter and read on the air. Certainly some producer at MSNBC saw them and at least tacitly approved. Martin Bashir and MSNBC are scum. I hope he never gets another job on TV.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

You said it, Katherine. How is it he was allowed to RESIGN and was not FIRED? Not for nothing, as Palin said, it isn’t like Bashir has called HER and apologized. Nice that he acknowledged what an incredible jackass he is on air, and all, but still – sure would be nice if he was man enough to tell HER.

And right there with ya – he doesn’t deserve to be on tv.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Palin just said her role is to be humble enough to accept Bashir’s apology, but she said she hopes that those kinds of attacks don’t keep people from going into business, or go into politics.

And yeah – that this was SCRIPTED is telling indeed. She is on Fox and Friends right now, and said she is kind of used to being attacked now, which is a sad thing for her to say…
