Happy New Year! *Open Thread*

by

Happy 2014 everyone! I hope you are all well, and have a great celebration.

I wanted to put up a couple of videos y’all shared further down in the comments to celebrate New Year’s Eve, and to continue some of the discussions we’ve been having.

First, to ring in the New Year, KenoshaMarge provided this video:

And from SSDD, a total favorite of mine, Lea Michele singing “Auld Land Syne”:

Just lovely. What a great rendition.

Please feel free to share your hopes and dreams for the coming year, fears and concerns, too.

Of course, issues continue to arise as the year ends, like the recent brouhaha sparked by Melissa Harris Perry over the Romney clan (h/t to Kinthenorthwest for the video):

Wow. I see she is really in the holiday spirit, isn’t she? Have a little race baiting with that cup of egg nog, why dontcha? Holy smokes. I am just a tad embarrassed that, not only did Harriis-Perry attend Union Theological Seminary, but she is a Unitarian Universalist, too.

This attack on the Romney family engendered this comment from Kenoshamarge:

I cannot call Melissa Harris Perry and her panel of buffoons the names they deserve. There is no term low enough to describe them.

There are black children, and white, all over this country who will spend their childhood in the system because there are not enough people willing or able to adopt.

One child is fortunate enough to be welcomed into a warm and loving family only to be mocked by an idiot who wore tampons as earring and thought she was being clever.

This despicible woman spends most of her time doing, or saying, something stupid or outrageous in order to get some attention. She got it. And even a tool like Roland Martin is chastising her for it.

Link: Nick Searcy, Stacey Dash Blast MSNBC Panel for Mocking Romney’s Black Grandchild

Hey Melissa – when even Roland Martin is chastising you – you really crossed a line!

SSDD provided the link for Harris-Perry’s TWEETED apology.

Ugh. Really?? She can blather on this race baiting diatribe on television, but just tweets her apology? Classy. Really classy.

But fortunately, there have been some good stories to end the year. Since there are 12 days of Christmas, I have to share this one. It brought a smile to my face, and a tear to my eye. What a joy it is to give:

If you want to see more good stories from 2013, you can check out some at The Week.

As for me, my rehab continues. I am happy to report that my physical therapist started me on the stationary bike today, not full rotations, mind you, but building up my range of motion. AND – to my great delight – I graduated from the walker to the cane! (Never thought I’d be so happy to use a cane, I have to say.) The incision is healing well too, thank heavens.

So, as 2013 draws to a close, and 2014 comes every closer, I want to thank you all again for the fantastic conversations over the past years. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, insights, links, and humor with all of us here. You are true treasures, and I am humbled, and thrilled, to know you!

Happy New Year, Friends!

This is short and a bit grainy..but I saw the words Auld Lang Syne and thought I see if one was out there…
    Elvis…and Auld Lang Syne…

    • SSDD Says:

Oh I love Elvis. I actually got to see him in concert when I was a teenager. I did yard work for this lady my aunt knew and earned a ticket up in the cheap seats…lol. I had a small pair of binoculars so I could see him on stage though. It was a thrill I won’t forget.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Dang, how cool is that?? I bet that was an experience of a lifetime, SSDD! πŸ™‚

      • kinthenorthwest Says:

A year or two before Elvis died my first Husband and I were traveling through Tahoe on our way home from vacation. As usual everything was on a tight budget..My husband hit a lotto ticket for around a $100 or so. So we got a room and hired a sitter so we could have a last night out on the town.
They were practically giving away the tickets to the Elvis Midnight show..Sadly my husband and I decided we would have time to do it another time..There never was another time…
SSDD I am envious of you..

        • SSDD Says:

Sorry you didn’t get to see him kin. Nobody expected him to die so young. When I saw him he was obviously quite ill already….very large and swollen all over. He kept forgetting the words to songs and he would laugh and everybody would laugh with him. He was Elvis…and it didn’t matter that he wasn’t thin and beautiful as he once was or that he couldn’t remember the words. We could forgive him anything because it was Elvis…a man we knew had more talent in his little finger than all these young hot shots today on the radio have if you put them altogether.

          • kinthenorthwest Says:

Elvis’s recording had and still have a way f touching one’s heart…At least for me…
There was just something within the way he sang that made one feel like he felt what he was singing..

There will never be another Elvis…They truly broke the mole with him..

  2. Katherine B. Says:

Amy, have a happy and healthy 2014! Your progress sounds very encouraging.

I’ve been recovering from unpleasant dental surgery but am on the mend. Everytime I get down about something like this I think about your trials and tribulations and I try to suck it up. I am of course sucking up all my meals through a straw these days and my tummy seems quite unhappy.

    • helenk3 Says:

I hope you feel better soon

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, Katherine, that is TERRIBLE! Dental surgery is the WORST, isn’t it (though the worst I have had is like wisdom teeth or root canals or something)? Hell, I hate it when I just get sores in my mouth, but to have to have something so severe you are drinking your meals? Oh, my – I am so, so sorry! I do hope you recover and quickly! Yikes – that sucks.

Hey – I could send you a big dispenser of Ghiradelli Dark Chocolate sauce – you could add that to all kinds of things and it would make it taste better, I am sure! πŸ™‚

And Happy New Year to you!

    • SSDD Says:

Egad….I hate the dentist….my sincere sympathies Katherine. I hope you are all well soon.

    Happy New Year everyone!
I’m woefully uninformed about the issues of the day…and admit that I enjoy it! Ha! I rarely watch news since the shake-up at Fox. She is probably a nice person, but “squeaky” Hasselbeck is not my cup of tea at six in the morning. Also, if Obamacare continues to be discussed more often than commercials, the death panels will be welcome! Ha! Yes, it is a disaster, but there are other pressing matters to be legislated.
Amy, it’s good to see that you are progressing well. We are well, but stressed about family members who are experiencing health problems, specifically dementia and long-term care. The last six weeks have been trying and time-consuming.
Hopefully, I will return to blogging occasionally in the future…till then, everyone hang in there!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

      Hey, Sassy –

Nice to *see* you. It sure sounds like you have a lot on your plate right now. Dealing with those kinds of health issues is really tough. I am sure the past few weeks have been very difficult indeed. I sure hope you and your family can get things resolved soon.

And hey – it is good to take a break from all of the madness that is politics from time to time anyway.

Again, I hope things work out soon – I know that trying to deal with family can be hard anyway, but especially with these kinds of issues. Come back whenever you want a break! πŸ™‚

    • SSDD Says:

Yeah…Hasselbeck did the New Year’s Eve show on Fox last night…I missed Megyn. Elizabeth is just okay to me…wish they had given the Fox and Friends spot to one of the other gals who were already on Fox.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yeah, Elizabeth is no Megyn, that’s true. She’s okay, but they do seem to have a wealth of talne there at Fox, and I’m not just saying that because one’s from Charlotte (my home town) and one’s from SC! πŸ™‚

  8. SSDD Says:

Oh wow….thank you for the mentions in your article Rev Amy…it made my day to see that. I am so glad your physical therapy is coming along well and that you are on the stationary bike now. Stationary bikes are wonderful things. I bought myself a Tunturi stationary bike after my surgery, and I rode it until if fell apart…lol. Oh that is super…you are already on a cane. Gosh that will be so much better for you. I was on a walker for a long time and it sucked. I made myself a little bag to tie on it so I could carry stuff around with me…lol. The incision healing well is also wonderful news.

Melissa Harris Perry should be forced to go live on that sorry excuse for a network she is on and look straight into the camera and apologize to the entire Romney family…especially to that little baby boy. I think our side is finally hitting back hard against these asshats in the media who seem to think they are entitled to say any outrageous thing they want to and get away with it. Martin Bashir found out what happens. I hope this horrid woman finds herself in a similar situation.

Oh….and something cute as it can be for everyone’s enjoyment:

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

      Truly my pleasure, SSDD!

I am using Suzy’s regular bike for my rehab. We bought a trainer for it, which works really well. I am glad to be that far along, but I have to say, it is PAINFUL. I am not at a full revolution yet, even backward (which, as you know, is much easier), but I’ll get there, I am sure.

Oh, yes – bags on walkers is key! I used one that held meds from a nerve block I had on a knee surgery. While I am happy to be using the cane, it is hard in some ways since everytime you want to do something, you can only use one hand, so it takes more trips. Anyway, I am not (really) complaining – the walker was a pain in the butt, and it scared the dogs, so there’s that! πŸ™‚

No kidding abt Harris -Perry. She most DEFINITELY needs to make a real apology on air, not in some Tweet. And I am glad that people are pushing back against these ridiculous comments these people have been making. Abt time they were held accountable for their rancorous statements.

What a WONDERFUL video! Thanks so much – that’s adorable!

      • SSDD Says:

Yeah…the not having both hands to use is a major pain. I had to go back to work when I was still on crutches and be on my feet all day all over a pretty large discount store doing inventory every week. I was happy to get on the cane but still….I had to hang my clipboard around my neck with a chain…lol. I was a sight to see limping about with my hanging clipboard slapping on my tummy all the way…lol.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

LOL, oh I can just see that, SSDD – that must have been a sight to be sure, but good for you for figuring out how to manage one-handed!

And thanks for the wish. I truly do appreciate it. I think it has been good for my right knee for me to be in the CPM so it gets a real chance to rest. Even after the two revisions, it has never gotten to 100%. The joint works well – it seems to be more of a scar tissue issue. Anyway, I would love to be running around, I can tell you! πŸ™‚

      • SSDD Says:

Oh…and Rev Amy…I have another wish for 2014…that you get back on your feet and are able to run about and do anything you want again. You are going to get there too.

        • kinthenorthwest Says:

Yes Amy…..I bet DJ would love you have you to be able to chase around with him outside…….

          • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

DJ loves to chase balls and toys, so ordinarily, I’ll heave some out in the yard for him. Thank heavens he has better spatial ability now and doesn’t run into me.

But for the time being, Suzy has to be the only one playing with him in the yard. Hopefully, I’ll be back out there soon!!

  9. SSDD Says:

Oops…I forgot to say what my wish for the new year is….well…getting rid of the grifters would be wonderful. I dream of Barry resigning like Nixon did…but it ain’t neva gonna happen. Lol…I can wish though.

    • kinthenorthwest Says:

I have two—One Obama gets escorted out of the WH with his hand hanging prior to 2016…
Or Obama’s hands get tied so he loses all the powers that he has been illegally using …

  10. foxyladi14 Says:

We all have that wish SSDD. πŸ˜†
But then we would get Biden.
Altho I admit he is looking better by the day. πŸ˜† πŸ˜†

    • SSDD Says:

Biden is a depressing thought. I guess we need a twofer then…lol…they both gotta go at the same time. Then we get Boehner…ugh…but better than either one of those two.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I’m convinced this is exactly why they picked Biden. They knew NO ONE would want to impeach Obama if it meant having Biden as president. Honestly, that’s the only reason I can figure, and it would be the only way he would be president, too. Heck, the man couldn’t even win a primary in his own state. So, yeah – that’s my theory…

  11. SSDD Says:

I was just listening to Mark Steyn while he fills in for Rush talking about Melissa Harris Perry:

    Just had to share

  14. Katherine B. Says:

I heard the greatest New Year’s resolution, possibly on some FOX show. A viewer wrote in and said he was so tired of making New Year’s resolutions that he could never keep that this year he decided he would drink more beer and gain 15 pounds. He felt pretty sure he could keep that one.

I’ve decided to adopt that for my New Year’s resolution.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

ROTFLMAO – that is fantastic, Katherine! πŸ™‚

    • SSDD Says:

Well… I guess I need to make a resolution to eat more chocolate anything then! Actually, I have made a promise to finish listening to the Atlas Shrugged audiobook I have…which is very gosh darned long…lol…but is an excellent book. Ayn Rand had to have been psychic is all I can figure.

  15. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

An old friend of mine shared this video on my Facebook page It shows how they train the Clydedales for all of those great Super Bowl commercials:

    • SSDD Says:

Oh I just love Clydedales…they are gorgeous! I have a chat room friend who lives in Florida and his daughter trains horses…he has been buying her Gypsy Vanners. They are just amazing and gorgeous horses. They know they are gorgeous too…lol.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

OHMYGOSH – I adore Gypsy Vanners! One of my presents this year were four coasters from Feathered Gold Gypsy Vanner Stable (two were mother and foal, and the other two were cute little foals). They are spectacular horses, and have very good temperaments. That young woman is MIGHTY lucky if her dad is buying them for her – WOW!!!! πŸ˜€

    • kinthenorthwest Says:

I have been wondering since the shutdown why the H3LL Obama could change the Obamacare Law all by himself, not once but how many times now, yet Congress could not…
What is interesting is that I don’t think that Obama is done changing Obamacare on his own.
What I am really Scared of is that Obamacare is not he only Law that Obama will play around with. H3LL he has already been playing around with many other Laws of the land..

I truly pray that Obamacare is finally struck down…

What I would really like to see though, is the end to the huge bills with pages and pages of ??? that most don’t read… I truly feel someone should make a law that there should be no laws at around 50(?) pages.. H3LL the biggest problem with Obamacare is that noone even really read it..

    • SSDD Says:

Those AG’s are right too…all these changes are illegal. Obama fancies himself King instead of a public servant who can do as he pleases.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Exactly – SOMEONE needs to stand up to him, and it is clear Congress is not. THEY are the ones who should be telling people that no matter what Obama says, HE is not the one to make changes to this law. Everything is going ahead as stated, and if they want laws to change, they need to contact their (Democratic) representatives and tell THEM to do it. If the Dems continue to refuse, continue to dig in their heels on this, let them face the people at the ballot box. And until then, they can live with the consequences of the Obama/Pelosi/Reid nightmare perpetrated on this country.

Maybe THAT will get through to them.

  17. foxyladi14 Says:

    Enjoy!!!! πŸ™‚

  18. SSDD Says:

The folks up North are about to get hit with some seriously nasty weather. I hope it isn’t as bad as the weather services are predicting for their sakes.

Wasn’t those Helo’s fueled with fossil fuels you know the ones that rescued the people stranded in the ICE!! πŸ™„

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yeah, good point there, Foxy. There was a TREMENDOUS amt of energy expended with the vessels that tried to rescue them, and then the helo having to go in. Sure will be interesting to see what they took away from this experience…

        • kenoshamarge Says:

These are dedicated “warmers” RRR. They will find a way to either A. make the whole experience proof of what they set out to prove in the first place, or B. blame the GOP.

It’s the liberal head in the sand – head up the butt way.

And of course we have our “crack” media that had 97% not mentioning that the ship and people stuck in the ice were Global Warming researchers. Kinda makes ya wonder if there might be some bias. /s

          • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

So true, Kenosha. I cracked up last night when Charles Krauthammer for his Best Moment said it was the penguins who now have their home back to themselves after these scientists destroyed their pristine environment. Cracked me up.

But you are right, and this is what bugs me so much abt this. That is NOT how science is supposed to work. One isn’t supposed to have a forgone conclusion and then make the data work to support it. Frustrating, that..

  20. SSDD Says:

After reading this I wondered what the hell is wrong with people now….it is beyond belief:

  21. kinthenorthwest Says:

Guess this Turkey was not too happy about all the Turkeys UPS delivered!!

  22. kenoshamarge Says:

Land of the free? I think not.

If I dropped and broke an old incandescent bulb and it broke I might cut my fingers.

If I drop one of the new CFL bulbs and it breaks I might poison myself with mercury.

How is that eco-friendly or even human being contact friendly?

FYI I used CFL bulbs in hard to access places because they last so much longer and changing bulbs was a real pain in the ass. It was MY damn choice.

Now I have no choice. And that is just wrong. And it makes me very, very angry. Pissed off even.

Excuse the language and even the outrage but I have reached a real saturation point with the liberals who seem to think that “choice” only pertains to abortion. Everything else is what we are told we must do.

    http://assets.amuniversal.com/891c2730570601316131001dd8b71c47

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Hey, you can rant on ANY time, Kenosha. And you are so right. How in the hell have our LIGHT bulbs been regulated? What ISN’T going to be regulated in our lives? Sure there are some things that might require regulation, but light bulbs?? C’mon.

      Love the rant!

      • kenoshamarge Says:

It isn’t just the lack of choice that gets me riled. It is the lack of critical thinking.

The CFL bulb came along and lasted longer and used less energy. Eureka? We must now force everyone to use this thing.

How about thinking about what happens when that bulb breaks and people are exposed to mercury? After they were forced to use this dangerous bulb. How is that right or smart?

Oh and forgot to mention, in my righteous wrath, that you can’t just throw the CFL bulbs away when they die. You have to take them someplace to have them disposed of safely. Are you kidding me? That alone says that these bulbs were not ready for prime time let alone to be mandated.

I have been buying and storing incandescent light bulbs of varying wattages for the last year. If I live past the age of 110 I might run out. Otherwise I have the light bulbs I want stored and ready for use.

And for those pesky hard to access spots – top of the basement stair – attic and yard lights – I will use CFL bulbs. And it will be MY choice!

So take that congress and shove it, along with a CFL bulb where the sun don’t shine. And pray that the CFL doesn’t break because you will probably have some health issues in your future.

The thought of those who forced this on us having a medical person tweezering broken glass out of said orifice does bring a smile to my lips.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, yeah – I TOTALLY get that, Kenosha – that it is the lack of critical thinking that is so evident in MANY of these decisions. It is truly startling that any kind of environmentalist would think mercury being so readily present in the home is a GOOD idea. How does one dispose of MERCURY? Just a tad different than putting an old-fashioned bulb into the trash.

Just unbelievable. Wow. Again, love the rant!
