“Slow Learners” *Open Thread*

That was the title of a very good Letter to the Editor in my local Post and Courier on Tuesday regarding Obamacare, or “Obamacaid,” as the writer opined. It seems with each passing day, the issues with Obamacare continue to mount, from serious security concerns (more on that below) to a cancer patient losing her insurance thanks to Obamacare, as well as her doctor being in her network. Or the pains one woman had to take to UN-enroll from Obamacare, a 6 week endeavor which culminated in her having to drive to Kansas City to get out of the plan.

Oh, and one cannot forget how the Administration continues to move the goal post to suit its own political needs in direct contravention to existing law and the Constitution. Shrug – whatever.

Anyway, I think the letter writer hit it out of the park. From the Post and Courier:

Recent polls show a majority have finally realized President Obama is not the Messiah many believed him to be. The reasons are many, including an incoherent foreign policy, scandals about the IRS and Benghazi, unconstitutional governance by executive order, and his “signature achievement,” Obamacare — a striking example of incompetence.

That said, the real problem is not President Obama but the majority that twice elected him despite his obvious shortcomings, including his pledge to “fundamentally transform” this country.

The public is now in turmoil over Obamacare, with its failed health insurance exchanges, fewer affordable health plans, high deductibles and narrow networks of doctors and hospitals.

Instead, we should be concerned with the far more important issue of our actual health care. Even a government as incompetent as this one, with unlimited resources and the force of law, will eventually develop a working health insurance system. But this government’s intrusion into health insurance brings with it many disastrous consequences for our health care.

It is becoming clear that the outcome of this monstrosity will be a two-tiered system: private first-class health care for the wealthy with the poor and middle class crammed into a Medicaid-like (Obamacaid) service featuring fewer quality doctors and hospitals willing to accept below-cost reimbursements.

Is there anything this new majority would consider off limits in its obedience to government controlling every aspect of our lives?

Bill Miller

Excellent question, I think. It sure doesn’t seem like anything is off limits.

And while I think that is a question worthy of discussion, I do want to highlight the recent claims by an IT Security expert regarding Obamacare. Frankly, this should scare the bejeezus out of people:

The expert, David Kennedy, went further in his assessment:

Despite the multimillions of dollars in taxpayers’ money that has been spent trying to correct the mammoth problems with the Obamacare website, a computer expert has stated that the site is much worse now than when it was first rolled out.

Computer security expert David Kennedy, who appeared on Fox News Sunday and testified before Congress, told Chris Wallace and a Congressional committee that he would not recommend that anyone use the website to sign up for Obamacare due to enormous security gaps that make their personal information vulnerable to hackers.

Kennedy is CEO of TrustedSec, an information security firm that engages in “white hat hacking” to help companies and government entities ascertain the level of vulnerability of their websites. Kennedy stated that security risks with the Obamacare site are so serious that even the government has no way of knowing whether the site has been hacked by cyber criminals or not.[…] (Click here to read the rest.)

Holy smokes, that is just startling. And again, why is our government wasting our money on a website that is SO flawed when so many other websites work so flawlessly? How is it that we have gotten so little to show for the hundreds of millions of dollars spent to get this thing working when it puts everyone’s private information so at risk? And again, how can we POSSIBLY expect the government to manage our healthcare effectively when they have proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, their complete incompetence in this arena?

And it does beg the question that the letter writer raises: how is it, after all the disasters that have occurred under this Administration, the mismanagement, the scandals, turning apolitical departments into political bullying arms, to the disaster that is “Obamacaid,” that people still give this government so much license over our lives? Just astounding…

Feel free to talk about any of the above, or anything else that’s on your minds!

Here’s my take on Obamacare. People judge it based on how it impacts them. I was talking to a student yesterday who has a summer gig with the feds. He is somehow entitled to health insurance through this job even though it is not a truly full time position. He says it is thanks to Obamacare. Two other adults I talked two (Obama supporters both) know seriously ill people who’ve been able to get health insurance thanks to Obamacare. All these folks, consequently, think Obamacare is a great thing.

I, on the other hand, lost the option of the plan I was on at work and had to take another plan that doubled my deductible. I’m a fairly healthy person and don’t use health care much and so I am now basically self-insured up to $400 a year. When you add the monthly premiums that are deducted out of my paycheck it all comes to roughly $700 a year. I dislike Obamacare, but at least I’m not facing the alarming deductibles some are facing who’ve had their individual plans canceled..

But, I also dislike Obamacare because I can see a disturbing big picture that will eventually catch up to most everybody. I see employers like Trader Joe’s, Target and Walmart dumping their part-time workers off company offered health insurance into the exchanges. I can foresee the impact of cutting almost 3/4 of a trillion dollars out of Medicare to pay for Obamacare, even if that impact doesn’t happen in the next five minutes.

I conclude that people who like Obamacare are those who immediately benefit from it and who are not the least little bit concerned about big picture implications. Nor are they concerned about the quality of the actual health CARE that will be offered.

Perhaps it is just human nature. If something is good for you, your like it. If something is bad for you, you don’t like it. What remains to be seen is how many of us will fall into either category.

What a great comment, Katherine. For those who are getting it, I assume they are being supplemented by those of us paying taxes? If not, they will get a bit of a rude awakening when they have to pay off the massive deductible first before anything is paid for by the plan. And who knows – the young man’s insurance may have been part of the package REGARDLESS of Obamacare. If it had been in place because of Bush, would he praise him?? Yeah, I know, I know.

Your concerns are spot on. The number of people now on Medicaid (“Obamacaid”) is significant, and again – who is going to pay for that?! That is always the question that these folks seem to forget. SOMEONE has to pay…

      Great comment!

Butt Amy they don’t care who pays AS long as it’s not them. 😡

  5. SSDD Says:

Instead of just providing a way for people with low incomes to buy coverage, they have totally destroyed healthcare for everybody but the well off. I wonder just how many people’s personal information is being sold right now that hackers have gleened from the Healthcare.gov site. I am also waiting for the first person that can proven has died, because even though they had coverage through the exchange…they could not find a doctor or hospital that would accept it. Once the employer mandate hits then all hell will break loose. This website cannot be “fixed”…it has to be scrapped and start over again…but they will keep trying to resurrect the dead with the one they’ve got.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

You said it, SSDD – they have destroyed it. Too many of us are now having to pay exorbitant amts, too many are now on Medicaid, too many are being shunted on to plans that are beyond their means, too many are getting subsidies, too many still won’t have coverage, and too many have lost the plans and doctors they were told they would keep. And that’s just the beginning of it.

I agree – this site, and the law, need to be scrapped.

ben laden planned the attack on the twin towers to interrupt the economy of this country. backtrack and the present day dems have been attacking the economy of this country since he was put in office.

how much has obamacare impacted jobs, small business (the backbone of the economy)?
how is that redistribution of wealth going in this country?

ben laden would be so proud of this bunch

Oh, I sure hope something. Even when I was a Yellow Dog Dem, I could not, for the LIFE of me, understand why he was picked to be the Senate Majority leader. Cannot stand him, and his tactics in the Senate have helped run this country into the ground. Considering what he did with Obamacare, I am sure Ethics is something abt which he knows nothing. I hope this probe is just the beginning…

Howdy all! I certainly agree with the letter’s assertion that the golden-tongued Obama is a lesser problem than the “constitution” of citizens who elected him twice!
The current extremes of winter are taking their toll on my peace of mind, but it will be an even colder day before I would consider voting for Clinton/Biden/Warren OR Christie/Cruz/Paul!
A recent poll showed that 25% identify as republicans…I’m no longer in that number. The recollections of Cindy and Honest Lawyer about the Kennedy assassination reminded me that I was also becoming aware of a dangerous, complex world beyond my personal surroundings at that time. Regarding politics and policy, I don’t try to convince others of my views, but must make a solid case to myself.
For years, I relied on C-Span for information directly from legislators. The current “might, could, may” media narrative is conjecture, not facts. My patience is exhausted, so I only catch snippets here and there…not a method of staying informed, but unless the dead-assed people who are collecting salaries from tax-payers start earning them, I decline to be responsible as well!

  21. sassyminor Says:

That Obamacare ever became law and survived challenges in the Supreme Court does not inspire confidence in this country’s governance. We seem to have transitioned from “can do” to “screw you”, and it comes from all directions.
Quality healthcare can be a matter of life and death, but may become as obsolete as secure employment now that it’s a political cudgel. Taking control of the healthcare system has been a long term objective of the Democratic Party. The damage from their accomplishment may be irreparable.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

No, it doesn’t, though the Supreme Court found it to be a tax, something the Dems denied up one side and down the other. I know some people think Roberts did that on purpose to set up some other challenges, but thus far, they have not amounted to much.

I fear you are right abt the potential damage, too…
