Oh, Yippee – 2014 SOTU Address *Open Thread*

Yep, it is that time of year when Obama gets to blather on about where the nation is. I wouldn’t expect a whole lot of objectivity from the most partisan president I have ever had the misfortune to live under, nor would I expect to hear anything much new. According to Chris Wallace, this speech is not much different from the speeches Obama has given for the past two years (a comment he made on Fox and Friends, 1/26/14). That doesn’t surprise me a whole lot. These folks don’t seem to have a lot of imagination. Heck, even NBC News expects there to be some regurgitation from previous speeches. Yikes.

But this Administration isn’t waiting until Tuesday night for the do-overs, oh no. Take, for example, Obama’s White House Adviser, Dan Pfeiffer. He appeared on Chris Wallace’s Sunday morning program on 1/26/14. He simply regurgitated the same talking points over and over, even going so far as to blame it all on Bush (naturally). From Fox News:

[…] WALLACE: You talk about income inequality. Some experts say the real reason that you got such income inequality is because of the weak Obama economic recovery.

Let’s take a look at some of the numbers there. Since the president took office, median household income has dropped from $55,900 to $52,100. Poverty has increased by 6.7 million to a record 46.5 million. And participation in the labor force has dropped from 65.7 percent to a 36-year low of 62.8 percent.

Wouldn’t a stronger, more robust economy and recovery solve a lot of these problems the president is talking about?

PFEIFFER: Well, absolutely. But I think it’s important to remember this president inherited the worst economic situation through the Great Depression, a financial crisis.

WALLACE: But the recession ended four years ago.

Uh, yeah. It’s all Bush’s fault. Right.

But you know that didn’t stop Pfeiffer from using old talking points:

PFEIFFER: Yes. And we have created in the last 46 months, 8 million jobs. The unemployment rate has dropped to 6.7 percent. We have — we are producing more oil than before. We are — American auto industry is number one in the world again.

We are making progress. There is more to do. That’s what you hear the president talk about. I think it’s important to remember that what we’re trying to do here is restore opportunity for all Americans. Grow the economy and create jobs.

WALLACE: But you talk about restoring opportunity. Median household income is down. Labor force participation is down. Food stamps are up. Poverty rate is up.

If things are so great, how come there’s (INAUDIBLE)? (“it’s so lousy,” is what Wallace said there.)

[…] WALLACE: One of the things that people say is a drag on the economy is ObamaCare. And I want to put up these numbers. According to a report last month, almost 400 businesses have cut workers and hours to avoid the employer mandate. And major employers like Target, Home Depot, Walgreens and Trader Joe’s say they’re going to drop part time workers from health insurance and direct them to the ObamaCare exchange.[…]

And naturally, you know Pfeiffer brought up the whole “Pen and Phone” crap, too:

[…] But also, the president will say to the country he’s not going to wait. He’s going to have the pen and he’s going to use those to move the ball forward to create opportunity.[…](Click here to read the rest.)

You know, the standard “We don’t need no stinkin’ Constitution” line from the President of the United States. Clearly, oaths mean absolutely nothing to him.

The State of the Union Address, then, will be more of the whole “income inequality” BS, though I am glad that Chris Wallace called Pfeiffer on how Obama’s OWN POLICIES helped create more “income inequality.” Of course, if people aren’t working, there is going to be a widening gap between those folks, and the ones who ARE working.

But even still, this issue falls WAY down on the totem pole for what Americans are most concerned about right now (only 12%). Want to know what the number one issue is? I am sure you can guess – it’s been the same for a while: JOBS. That’s what Americans continue to care. Yet, the President and his minions continue to be tone-deaf to those concerns, and to push an issue his policies have made worse.

Just as a digression, along those lines, I saw in the paper recently that for the first time, the largest number of people getting Food Stamps are people of working age. This is in juxtaposition to former recipients being primarily seniors and children. That is a sad, sad commentary on where our nation is now. I’m gonna bet Obama is NOT going to acknowledge THAT in his SOTU Address. Ahem.

And if you want to read the President’s SOTU Address rather than having to sit through it all, I will have a link HERE. And if you want to see a funny version of the SOTU, you can click here (thanks to a Facebook for this). But as I offered in a comment the other day, if you are able to make it through the entire thing, I will send you a box of chocolates (or whatever your treat of choice is), and a bottle of Pepto Bismol. Seriously.

Following Obama’s redux of the 2013 SOTU will be the Republican response to Obama’s perspective. The person who will be giving the Republican response to Obama’s SOTU Address is Washington Representative, Cathy McMorris-Rodgers. Here is a nice clip introducing Rep. McMorris-Rodgers:

If you wish, you can watch her response by clicking on this link for the GOP response (h/t Robin).

If you do choose to watch it, please feel free to put the high, or low, lights in the comments. Discussion of the Address, and the Response, are welcome and encouraged.

And this is also an Open Thread.

(Edited to add link for SOTU address.)

I can’t remember who, but someone was saying yesterday that it is ironic that Christie was asked abt being a bully when OBAMA is the one demonstrating bullying behavior. Thanks for the great article!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yeah, well, they were all too busy propping him up back in 2008, as I recall. They bought into how AWESOME he was, even though he had no experience, and how he was going to save not just the US, but the entire WORLD. Perhaps had they bothered to do their jobs then, along with the US media, then maybe – just maybe – we wouldn’t be in this mess.

I was thinking about the big news that Obama will, through executive action, raise the minimum wage for Federal Contractors to $10.10 an hour. First, I wondered who would be working on a federal contract for less than $10.00. Then I realized that any federal contractor who was impacted by this would simply raise their bid for a project. So then the federal government would be paying the higher wage – not the contractor. If the federal government pays the higher wage that means either (a) we pay higher taxes to cover the minimum wage increases in federal contracts or (b) the feds just print more money. This is the joke behind the headlines.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Exactly, Katherine. Ultimately, one way or the other, we will be the ones paying those higher wages that Obama so magnanimously extended on our behalf.

And speaking of, I saw something today after I sent off an email at AOL. It was this whole thing abt how Obama passed a measure that would allow people to refi at lower rates, and to see what Obama did, etc., etc. It struck me for two reasons: I realized that this is exactly the kind of crap that convinced people Obama would pay their mortgage, pay their gas, and all of that; and because it was made Obama-specific as opposed to the Fed. Gov’t specific via Congress. It was really odd.

I had been seeing it for a couple of days recently, and had skimmed right over it, but for some reason today, it really hit me how they had made this all abt him…

As an adult, I have watched every State of the Union no matter who was President – Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush(es), Clinton – believing it was my duty to be an informed citizen. I CANNOT make myself watch Obama. I simply cannot stomach the guy. So, my hat is off to you, Ferd. I’ll read about it after the fact, but will not subject myself to his non-stop egotism and lies.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Ferd, if you prefer, I can send a favored ale to help take the edge off after you make it through rather than chocolate. Ahahahaha…

Better get those socks rolled up…

And Katherine, I very much appreciate your sentiment! There is only so much one can do sometimes…

Ferd, if you can stomach it, and tidbits you would like to share with us would be appreciated – I think! ๐Ÿ™‚

I am still waiting for the full text to be released and I’ll link it up. But yeah, I just saw an article at The Hill that already got my blood pressure going: http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/196725-obama-i-wont-stand-still

Hmmm – let’s hope this will actually be the case. Heaven knows SOMEONE needs to stand up for the Constitution:Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) warned House Republicans planned to โ€œwatch very closelyโ€ to make sure the president was โ€œfaithfully executing the laws.โ€

โ€œThere’s a Constitution that we all take an oath to, including him. And following that Constitution is the basis for our republic. And we should not put that in jeopardy,โ€ Boehner said.
