“Hey, We’re Not Really Monitoring The News,” Says the FCC *Open Thread* *UPDATED* (Clarification)

Update at the bottom of the post.

Uh huh. Yes, now the FCC is trying to claim that their “study” isn’t REALLY as intimidating and fascist as it appears. Oh, no – they just want to make sure that certain groups are served by the news. Sure. Right. Okkaaayyy…

You may recall that, just last week, I had this passage in the post, “Things That Make You Go, ‘Huh?’,” regarding where the USA is in terms of Freedom of the Press:

[…] This next story is maybe not so much of a “Huh?” as it is a, “Sigh…” at where our country has headed under this Administration. Reporters Without Borders recently released their latest report of where countries stand in terms of Freedom of the Press. Sadly, the United States has lost a great deal of ground as the report demonstrates: 2011-2012 World Press Freedom Index:The worldwide wave of protests in 2011 also swept through the New World. It dragged the United States (47th) and Chile (80th) down the index, costing them 27 and 47 places respectively. The crackdown on protest movements and the accompanying excesses took their toll on journalists. In the space of two months in the United States, more than 25 were subjected to arrests and beatings at the hands of police who were quick to issue indictments for inappropriate behaviour, public nuisance, or even lack of accreditation. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

This simply affirms what many of us have thought about this Administration and the way it deals with the press. One need only think back to how it went after James Rosen of Fox News and the Associated Press to see this major drop in ranking is deserved (sadly.)

And here I thought THAT was bad. Who knew that it was going to get worse with the FCC wanting to do this “study” of being in the newsrooms? An idea that, according to Judge Napolitano, came STRAIGHT from the White House. Now THAT should be even more chilling to ALL American citizens. Here’s the Judge:

As Judge Napolitano and others, like Charles Krauthammer, have mentioned, the FCC is the entity that provides licenses. So this is not an innocent little gambit by the Federal Government. To turn down an invitation by the FCC to voluntarily allow them into newsrooms, would be like telling the IRS you are a Tea Party member. That is to say, count on that extra scrutiny, or at worse, the license being revoked. This Administration has already more than proved it is exceedingly vindictive in nature.

And when the Federal Government wants to “oversee” the press, whether under the guise of a “study” or not, it should be chilling to ALL Americans, regardless of political affiliation. The All Star Panel had an excellent discussion on this very matter Thursday night. I encourage you to CLICK HERE to watch the video (especially since the following paragraph is assuming you do).

Yes. The Congress needs to hop to TODAY to stop any funding whatsoever for this study or any one even REMOTELY like this. Taxpayers should not be forced to pay for a massive violation of our Constitution, as Nina Easton said in the video above.

Oh, and the company that would be overseeing this as mentioned by Charles Lane? As regular commenter, Helenk, noted, the daughter of Democratic Rep. James Clyburn of SC, is the one who will be overseeing it. More nepotism on the part of Jim Clyburn (thank heavens, no longer my representative thanks to redistricting), for which Clyburn is FAMOUS in these parts. (Clarification: That Rep. Jim Clyburn’s daughter is an FCC Commissioner is just a TAD interesting. How in the WORLD did she get that job?? Oh, wait. Obama nominated her for it, that’s how.)

To control the media is what dictators do. And I do not say that lightly, but it is well documented to be the case. And that this country is going down this road with too many people capitulating out of partisanship, or ignorance, or both. THAT is a sad state of affairs.

And I cannot leave you on that low note, though I am incredibly disturbed that THIS is the “Change” Obama is bringing to the United States. It is just too depressing a concept on which to end, this continued assault on our Constitution. Yes, we must fight it. But we also need a respite to restore and rest so we can continue.

So I will leave you with the following video of two young moose and their mother
playing in a sprinkler:

Hey, it beats beating our heads against the wall at where our country is headed, right?

Feel free to talk about any of the above, what is happening in the Ukraine, how Yuna Kim was robbed of the Gold Medal in Figure Skating (seriously), the heartbreaking loss of the US Women to Canada in hockey, or whatever else is on your minds. This is an Open Thread.

UPDATE: Victory!! Hot off the presses from The Hill, “FCC pulls plug on press study“:

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is pulling the plug on a controversial study that critics warned would have threatened the First Amendment right to freedom of the press.

A spokeswoman with the commission said on Friday that a pilot version of the study would be suspended and redesigned so that journalists would not have to answer the FCC’s questions about their work.

“To be clear, media owners and journalists will no longer be asked to participate in the Columbia, S.C., pilot study,” Shannon Gilson said in a statement.

“The pilot will not be undertaken until a new study design is final. Any subsequent market studies conducted by the FCC, if determined necessary, will not seek participation from or include questions for media owners, news directors or reporters.”

Here’s my favorite part, though:

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has said that the commission never intended to muzzle journalists.

Nevertheless, he “agreed that survey questions in the study directed toward media outlet managers, news directors, and reporters overstepped the bounds of what is required,” Gilson said on Friday. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Ahahahahahahaha! Isn’t that so cute?? The FCC claims violating the First Amendment was NEVER its intention! Oh, but of course – I believe them, don’t you?? Ahem.

Anyway – GOOD NEWS that our taxpaying dollars will NOT be going to this “study” and that our First Amendment will not be under assault by the FCC. At least not right now…

I remember reading a long time ago the “Krauthammer Rule” which said that

“To understand the workings of American politics, you have to understand this fundamental law: Conservatives think liberals are stupid. Liberals think conservatives are evil”.

The further the Obama DOJ, IRS, HHS, EPA and now the FCC go, the more I tend to disagree with Krauthammer. The resounding silence from the left and the White House stenographers AKA media about these violations of our constitution is beginning to convince me that that liberals aren’t just stupid, although many are certainly that, but that their leaders ARE evil. And all who see what is happening and remain silent are evil.

Thanks for the “moose” video Rev. With all that is going on it was a nice change for me to sit and smile instead of gritting my teeth, throwing something or using words that used to get my mother to head for the bar of ivory soap and me to head for the tall and uncut.

Never thought of moose calves (?) as beign playful. They are so cute.

Kenosha, you make an excellent point. That the Dems are willingly engaging in this systematic dismantling of the Constitution, beginning with Obama on down, certainly does lead one to believe that their motives are nefarious indeed. It also makes clear just why they worked so hard to make this all abt a Cult of Personality with Obama, and why they have worked so hard to divide the country into an “Us v. Them” mentality. How else could they get their minions to accept what they were doing But of COURSE they need to step into the newsrooms to make sure certain communities were being served. I mean, heck, what’s wrong with that, huh? And never mind if it is paid for with YOUR tax dollars, and overseen by the daughter of an imminently corrupt politician? One could only be a RACIST to see a problem with that.

And yes, that is why moose playing in sprinklers is so important lest we bash our own heads in, or have our mouths washed out with soap! 🙂

    • Katherine B. Says:

OMG!!!!! My mother actually did wash my mouth out with Ivory soap once when I was not yet 5 years old. What in the world could I have said that would warrant that???? I’ve not been able to tolerate the sight or fragrance of Ivory soap my entire life. Your reference to this gave me a good laugh. And we all know we could use a good laugh.

Kudos to the FCC commissioner who decided to speak out so forcefully and who has brought this power grab to light. What’s that old saying, “All that is necessary for evil to prevail is for good men (people) to do nothing.” Here’s someone who spoke up and we owe him a lot.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, I got my mouth washed out with Ivory, too! Dang, we must have been something as kids, right? Ahahahaha…

YES – we do owe Ajit Pai a great deal. Had had the Commissioner not written his piece for the WSJ, “The FCC Wades Into the Newsroom; Why is the agency studying ‘perceived station bias’ and asking about coverage choices?” (http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304680904579366903828260732), we likely would NEVER have known abt this latest Constitutional assault by Obama, and it did come STRAIGHT from the WH.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, and note that in Pai’s piece, he claims this study would also include NEWSPAPERS. The FCC has no jurisdiction over newspapers, which only serves to reinforce the underhandedness of this “study.”

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I was raised on Army Bases and had a very colorful vocabulary by the time I was 4 or 5. I said plenty that warranted the Ivory mouth wash. I was said to be “smart as a whip” but yet not smart enough to keep my mouth shut. Some things never change.

At least no one washes my mouth out with soap any more but Lou does chastise me for teaching the bird expletives while at the same time expressing admiration at the variety of four letter words I can rattle off. Words he doesn’t think most “little old ladies” know. But most “little old ladies” weren’t army brats and didn’t have a father who was a Master Sergeant in the United States Army who had a far larger “vocabulary” than I do only because I can’t remember some of the words.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

ROTFLMAO – that is too funny, Kenosha, especially abt the BIRD! Ahahahahaha!!!! That’s too funny.

I bet growing up an Army Brat did provide you a rather, um, extensive, vocabulary! Who knew that it was providing you such a great stress relief for your later years? 😀

And yes, my partner also grew up on Army bases (her dad went from enlisted to being a 3 star), so at least when I go on a rant, it isn’t anything she hasn’t heard before! 😉

    good article.

we are losing more freedom in this country every day.
There is a slave mentality still alive and well in this country. take care of me, do not make me think, I do not have to be responsible that is someone else’s job. just shut up and sit down

    • helenk3 Says:

the government knows best. do not question. they are better at raising my kids. telling me what is news, what I can and can not eat or drink. what kind of light bulb I can use. whether or not I can keep the doctor, hospital and medical treatment that I need. It is my fault that the weather is uncomfortable, after all if I did leave such a carbon footprint by daring to breath there would be no drought or over abundance of snow.
the government officials deserve to take the vacations that I can no longer afford. I am sure all the trips they take are really necessary.

      what part don’t you understand?

    this is just wonderful

  4. helenk3 Says:

it is talk radio that the backtrack FCC is after

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I thought that “Talk Radio” was what they were really after. The left dominates television and the press but the right dominates Talk Radio. Facism is alive and well and lives in liberal hearts and minds.

  5. helenk3 Says:

Have you noticed that it is always the same small group of senators that stand up , shout out and demand answers from the backtrack bunch

    • kenoshamarge Says:

And have you noticed that most of the Democrat Senators are silent on the constant attacks on our constitution? That tells you all you need to know about them as Americans. Party over country every damn time. I hope they all rot in hell!

  6. helenk3 Says:

    you gotta love Krauthammer

  7. helenk3 Says:

With a fascist the problem is never how best to present the truth to the public but how best to use the news to deceive the public into giving the fascist and his group more money or more power.

think there should be a law that all the greenies should have to support at least 6 families that the loss of jobs hurt because of the greenie’s beliefs

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yeah, she’s a bit out there. And of course, when you are a multimillionaire, it is all too easy to preach to others what they should do and how they should live. Yep – she could afford to support those families, but she won’t. She’ll just lecture them abt how they should just live off the earth or something and build a teepee like she did and then they wouldn’t need a job anyway, or something like that…

I’m all for being environmentally conscious, and have been for years. But sometimes one has to consider a bigger picture. Rather than buying our oil from nations that aren’t too keen on us, if we can become more self-reliant, and employ a number of Americans, while doing a minimum of damage to the environment (as the reports keep highlighting), then yeah – maybe we should consider it…

Liberals Take Over Late Night With Jimmy Fallon

    Good bye, Jay Leno…
Hello liberal monopoly of late night television.

With Jay Leno’s departure from “The Tonight Show” late night television will be dominated by liberal hosts. NewsBusters reported:

The Obamas have had few more obsequious media allies than NBC’s Jimmy Fallon. Now that he’s taking over the hallowed ground of “The Tonight Show,” Fallon’s proven ability to spread his reach into viral videos on YouTube promises to become even more politically potent.

Fallon’s Obama-friendly sketches and interviews have become immediate “news” grist for the Comcast corps at NBC and MSNBC. The same sensation happens when Fallon is ripping into a Republican.

    more: http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2014/02/liberals-take-over-late-night-with-jimmy-fallon/

And yet brain dead conservatives will continue to watch these biased, dishonest individuals. STOP doing that! If 1/2 of the country does not tune in they will have crappy ratings. Write to the stations and tell them why you don’t watch. Make your protest with you damn remote – you won’t even have to get out of your recliner to change the channel. Why do conservative watch people who disdain, insult and demean them? WHY?

Does the attempt by the FCC now seem even more chilling? With Jay Leno, the only “fair” voice on late night gone – the takeover is complete. Thus onward to silence “Talk Radio”.

Maybe I need a tin foil hat but all this coming at once does not seem accidental or coincidental to me. I’m with Leroy Jethro Gibbs – I don’t believe in coincidences – at least not in politics.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yeah, I sure won’t be watching it, that’s for sure. I guess NBC just couldn’t stand that Leno actually poked fun at Obama. Can’t have that! He must be propped up at all times, dontcha know!

And even Fox is showing all these clips from the new show. There ya have it…

Yes, the takeover does seem to be complete…

  17. sassyminor Says:

Time after time I’ve thought that the Obama gang has gone too far….that enough people have had enough! Then McAuliffe is elected governor in Virginia, and I question whether republicans can reclaim the Senate to put the brakes on run-away power grabs.
At least for today, the FCC has been neutered. Whoopee!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yeah, that was a mess. The Dem smear machine, which we have seen in action a number of times now, went after the VA AG Cuccinelli in a big way. He could not recover from that in time. That, and the way the toll out of ACA was done. I seem to recall him saying if he had an extra week after that, he would have won. Likely so, but the Dems did it the way they did for a reason…
