Obama To Putin, “Um, Uh, Stop It, Okay?” Weekend Open Thread

The news for the past few days has been the uprising in Ukraine, and some military movement by Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Seems that movement isn’t confined to Ukraine either, since a little “spyship” from Russia ended up in Cuba on Thursday.

And what did our President do? He used his words, made an empty, meaningless threat. From The Hill:

President Obama warned Friday there “will be costs” if Russian takes military action inside Ukraine.

In a brief appearance in the White House press briefing room, Obama said his administration was “deeply concerned” by reports that the Russian military is already intervening in the Crimea, an area of Ukraine with strong Russian ties.

“Any violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing, which is not in the interests of Ukraine, Russia or Europe,” Obama said. “It would represent a profound interference in matters that must be determined by the Ukrainian people.”

He warned Russian military intervention would be a “clear violation” of its international commitments, and noted the action came on the heels of the Winter Olympic games.

“Just days after the world came to Russia for the Olympic games, it would invite the condemnation of nations around the world,” Obama said. “And indeed, the United States will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine.”

Obama said his administration had remained in touch with Kremlin officials since he and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke a week ago. He pledged to coordinate with allies in Europe, and said Vice President Biden had contacted the Ukrainian prime minister to affirm U.S. support.

“Throughout this crisis, we have been very clear about one fundamental principle: the Ukrainian people deserve the opportunity to determine their own future,” Obama said. “Together with our European allies, we have urged an end to the violence and encouraged Ukrainians to pursue a course in which they have stabilized their country, forge a broad-based government and move to elections this spring.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Yes, you read that right – not only did Obama make an essentially toothless threat, he had BIDEN speaking with the Ukrainian Prime Minister. WOW. I’m sure THAT will help (not)…

Charles Krauthammer had this to say about Obama’s speech on “Special Report with Bret Baier” Friday night:

Exactly. All Obama did was make an empty, meaningless STATEMENT, not even a threat.

Oh but wait – it gets better (worse). Then what did Obama do? Well, he went to a DNC fundraiser where he made this smug quip:

Yes, it’s true. Obama declared made this smug “Happy Hour” comment not an HOUR after his Ukraine speech.

Honestly, this all just leaves me shaking my head in dismay and disgust at the ineptitude of the President. But it is actually worse than that. A friend had the following quote at Facebook by Vaclav Klaus:

Quote of the Century

Yes. That is the crux of the matter, isn’t it? After all is said and done, that Obama would not only be elected once, but twice, speaks volumes about the state of the country, and the citizens who voted for him, many twice, despite all the scandals, all the ineptitude in foreign and domestic policy. THAT is what is most disconcerting.

And now here are. Truly disturbing.

Oh, and two last things, speaking of elections. As Helenk pointed out yesterday, Sarah Palin was right about Ukraine. She TOTALLY called it. And Romney totally called it when he said Russia was a huge threat and got this arrogant, condescending response from Obama during a debate:

So, Mr. Obama, seems you were flat out WRONG, and Romney was flat out RIGHT.

Again, when we had a chance to elect Romney, someone who is being proven right REPEATEDLY in Obama’s second term, we got Obama instead. Obama, who runs off to a DNC fundraiser announcing “Happy Hour” right after his speech, and has BIDEN speak with the Ukraine Prime Minister instead of doing it HIMSELF.

Good grief. Well, you know I cannot leave you on this down note, so allow me to share a video of the cutest animal on the face of the planet (okay, one of them). I had never heard of them before yesterday when a friend had a link to photos on her Facebook page. Behold the Quokka, a small marsupial from Australia:

See? How stinkin’ cute are these creatures? Sure helps to take the sting out of seeing Obama blathering away on the Tee-vee saying not much of anything at all to Russia – RUSSIA. Ugh. Okay, got to get back to the Happy Quokka Space…

What’s on your minds today? Feel free to talk about any of the above, or whatever else is on your minds.

this crowds reaction is weird and really not good for the country

HOLY CRAP – that really is telling, Helen – that they would chant OBAMA’s name to the heckler instead of “U-S-A” says it all. It is all abt the Cult of Obama. I wrote abt that YEARS ago. Frightening…

  2. kenoshamarge Says:

I believe that we need to stay the hell out of what is happening between Russia and Ukraine.

And for Obama to say that Russia will pay a price is, well priceless.

Sevastopol is the key port for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, and they retained control as part of an agreement with Kiev. What price does Obama think to inflict that trumps that?

Add in that most of the citizens of the Crimea WANT to stay with Russia not the EU. It’s a big mess and not ours to try to untangle.

I know that Putin is an old KGB thug and have no use for him as such. But in this case I can actually see his side of things.

Obama needs to stay at Happy Hour which is the level of his competence, and any half-way decent bartender and leave foreign policy to those who understand it.

Or he could send the USS Obama.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

OHMYGOSH – that photo is PERFECT, Marge. Absolutely perfect!

And yeah, that’s a good point abt Obama’s competency level. When he has BIDEN do his foreign policy for him, you know we are in trouble. Good grief. Yep, the bartender would likely have a better idea.

Excellent point abt Crimea, too – that does complicate things.

Really, what could we do anyway? As Krauthammer was saying last night, for Obama to have mealy mouthed around accomplished NOTHING but to show how weak he/USA was. That what he SHOULD have said was that he was recalling our Ambassador, we would NOT go to the G-8 in Sochi, etc., etc., if Putin didn’t knock it off. But he did none of those things. (Helenk had this link in yesterday’s post on Krauthammer’s remarks: http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/372298/krauthammers-take-obama-tells-world-we-arent-going-do-anything-about-invasion-ukraine)

      • kenoshamarge Says:

We can stay out of this conflict and still look strong. But not with Obama at the helm.

And McCain – he never sees a conflict in which he doesn’t want to involve the USA.

Yikes! Whose bright idea was it to send Mr MomJeans out to challenge Putin??

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Sadly, through the Cult of Obama and voter fraud, your fellow citizens did. I wonder if they see the stupidity of their support now? Nah – probably not, especially since I am certain MSNBC/NBC/ABC/CBS/CNN are NOT reminding people what Obama said in his debate with Romney, or what Palin said back in 2008. Nope, no way…

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

There’s a reason why CNN is coming in DEAD LAST in the ratings. This kind of pathetic reporting. When will they finally give it up and shut down this channel, I wonder?

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks for this – the Bret Baier video in the post has Obama’s call for Happy Hour, too. 🙂

Can you believe this country has a President who can make such an insipid remark and receive such an enthusiastic response? Amazing…

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Glad you liked it, Marge! I thought it was right on target.

Oh, and get this. A friend just mentioned that Obama chose NOT to attend the National Security briefing on Ukraine today. WOW. Unbelievable: http://www.buzzfeed.com/evanmcsan/white-house-obama-not-attending-national-security-briefing-n

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Can’t make things like this up. This disgusting POTUS is a disgrace to this country. And all those who sing his praises are worse IMO! He’s basically a narcissist and can’t really help himself. They are the enablers.

This article pretty much sums up how I feel about the whole Ukraine issue:

Ukraine Is Hopeless … but Not Serious http://pjmedia.com/spengler/2014/03/01/ukraine-is-hopeless-but-not-serious/?singlepage=true

And where are all those who ridiculed Sarah Palin for saying that just this thing would happen now? Are they rushing to apologize for the fact that she was right and they were not only wrong but damned wrong? I won’t hold my breath until they have the class to apologize just as I won’t hold my breath until tacky Obama apologizes to Romney. To do so would be dangerous to my health. Deadly even.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

That is exactly right, and the point Klaus made in the Quote. Our biggest problem isn’t Obama, but the people who VOTED for him, and continue to support him no matter the havoc he is wreaking on this nation. They are the ones who continue to excuse his behavior, dismiss authentic criticism of his policies and their outcomes as racism, and cheer on his smug, arrogant attacks on anyone who disagrees with him. THEY are the problem, but they have made this all OUR problem (and the world’s on one level or another).

Oh, before I forget – in terms of Clinton’s potential run, do you think people will realize this is yet another massive failure of her term as SoS when she presented the (incorrectly translated) Reset Button? When you look at ALL of the areas of the world that she and Obama had a hand in that have erupted, it doesn’t speak well of her abilities, or Obama’s policies. Just saying.

And no kidding. Palin was right, and Romney was right, but the journalists who attacked them and tried to make them look like idiots will NEVER admit they were wrong. Hell, the JournoListers intentionally set out to discredit Palin, even though just prior to her being named the VP candidate, she was receiving praise from them, precisely BECAUSE they knew she was on top of things. It is truly a dereliction of duty on the media’s part. They have failed this country miserably.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yes he does have total disrespect for this country. No doubt abt it. Our elected officials and the Judicial Branch can start standing up to him any second now.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Well if you consider that Valerie Jarrett is in charge of Foreign Policy and Obama is in charge of Happy Hour it all begins to make sense in a pathetic kind of way.

Not to worry Rev, Kerry says Putin invading Ukraine is an act of weakness. If that wasn’t stupid enough he also said “Putin ‘Not Operating From Position of Strength”. Don’t you all feel so much safer knowing that John Kerry is our SoS. Guess he’s “brilliant” too.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Au contraire Rev, Obama has warned them that there will be a cost for what they do. I’m sure that has them really worried if they can stop laughing long enough.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Well, I suppose that is ONE defense – make them laugh until they kill themselves doing it? Ahem.

  22. Nunly Says:

I think I saw somewhere that Russia has pulled its Ambassador from the US. Cold War? Oh, that’s just so ’80’s…sigh.

  24. sassyminor Says:

Last week Fox reported that the number of military families receiving food stamps had doubled on Obama’s watch. A stellar CIC …although NO personnel should be in that situation under ANY president! CNN deservedly ripped Congress for shelving legislation pertaining to veterans’ benefits.
Oops, yes, I watch CNN on occasion. They covered the hearing on Syria in it’s entirety, unlike Fox. They also interviewed the Syrian ambassador to the U.N., three articulate Syrian women who oppose Assad, and reported numerous times from refugee camps. At that time, Fox only had Leland Vitter reporting from Israel.
I require information from various sources, recognizing that all are slanted. Last year, three important events _ the use of drones, Snowden’s departure to Russia, and the government shut-down_ proved to me that my conclusions do not jibe with any political party.
Sigh, I can never be elected!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It is deplorable what is happening to our military under this president. The rise of food stamp usage, what this Admin. has done with the Commissaries, the benefits cuts, all of that, are disturbing. As someone noted on the news recently, 1% of the pop. defends the other 99%. They should be treated a helluva lot better than that.

I think you will find that we all require and utilize a variety of news sources here. No one site is the be-all-end-all in my experience.

I am beholden to neither party either, as I have stated a number of times. But it is clear the Dems refuse to hold Obama accountable for anything, and too many of them are willing to do his bidding, like ignore laws. Hence the Reps are the only ones in a position to stand up to him. They fail on a number of occasions, no doubt abt it. But thus far, they are the only ones to demonstrate a willingness to dig deeper on issues like the IRS and Benghazi. Still, they all could do a helluva lot better in standing for country before party.

Putin is a dangerous individual with resources to match his ambitions. He has made references to the “territory of Ukraine.” That country has high national debt and a declining population, with only 17% ethnic Russians. What is his real objective?
According to Wikipedia, Ukraine has rich, fertile farmland and in 2011 was the third largest grain exporter in the world. Food and oil make the world go ’round.
