“Offended As An American Taxpayer” Weekend Open Thread

So claimed David Wright, the Director of the Office of Research Integrity of Health and Human Services, in his letter of resignation from his position. Oh, wait, that isn’t an adequate descriptor. It was, in his words, “the very worst job I have ever had…” as well as claiming the bureaucracy of the Federal Government was “profoundly dysfunctional.”

Yikes. And there is more, from WaPo:

Wright asserts in the letter, addressed to Assistant Secretary for Health Howard Koh, that government officials care more about their own advancement than the public good:

“Since I’ve been here I’ve been advised by my superiors that I had ‘to make my bosses look good.’ I’ve been admonished: ‘Dave, you are a visionary leader but what we need here are team players.’ Recently, I was advised that if I wanted to be happy in government service, I had to ‘lower my expectations.’ The one thing no one in OASH [Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health] leadership has said to me in two years is ‘how can we help ORI better serve the research community?’ Not once.”

Wright alleges in the letter that Koh himself described his office as operating in an “intensely political environment.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Uh, yeah, of that I have absolutely no doubt. This Administration has highly politicized EVERY department, it seems.

I can completely understand Mr. Wright’s outrage as an American taxpayer. That is pretty much how I feel about our government being able to dictate to us what we MUST buy, whether we want it, or even need it. THAT is highly offensive to me, especially since Mr. Wright’s big boss, Kathleen Sebellius, is so unbelievably ill-prepared for her role, though she did have a horrible law to institute from the get-go, so there’s that. But the waste, the corruption, the sheer incompetence of it all is highly offensive.

Almost as offensive as the Salesman in Chief coming out with THIS little ditty on Friday (h/t Rich):

Mr. President, we figured that out already. Actually, most of us figured that out before this even became law. That’s why we were so opposed to it. That, and the sheer inability of this government to run anything without being incredibly “dysfunctional,” as Mr. Wright said. Again, the US Government has no business overseeing our health care. None.

To highlight that point, there was an article in my local paper, the Post and Courier, about a local couple who needed to buy insurance through Healthcare.gov. Here’s what happened to them (Post and Courier):

[…] They picked a Consumer’s Choice Health Plan for $1,200 a month – one of four health insurance companies selling plans to South Carolina residents on the federal marketplace. The Hudsons’ income qualified them for a large tax subsidy, which lowered the cost of their new coverage to $200 a month.

Let me stop right there. This couple is being subsidized to the tune of $1,000 a MONTH, $12,000 a YEAR. Just think about that. This is just ONE couple out of all the Americans who are now going to be subsidized by the US Taxpayer. Just think about the extraordinary cost this is to us as a nation, and as citizens. How is it not going to break us to have not only our OWN increased premiums, but to have to subsidize, through our taxes, millions of people? Again, to quote Mr. Wright, I am “offended as an American taxpayer…” And how.

But there’s more about this couple and what happened AFTER they got their wonderful (cough, cough) Obamacare:

“It’s a real good deal on the surface,” said John Hudson, 58, a pastor.

But then, his experience with Consumer’s Choice Health Plan turned south.

“They sent us a package in the mail – a thick, brown envelope,” he said. “We had to choose a medical doctor and so we started doing that.”

But Hudson couldn’t find a primary care doctor within 45 miles of Kingstree that would accept the new insurance, despite the fact that the company lists several local in-network providers on its website. In fact, most providers he spoke to had never heard of Consumer’s Choice Health Plan before.

“All the doctors we called were not aware that they were even part of the provider list,” he said.

Ruh roh. Oh, but wait – believe it or not, it gets worse:

[…] Hudson contacted the S.C. Department of Insurance for help and was told to call customer service at HealthCare.gov. The federal government told him to file a grievance with the state. “They couldn’t figure out what was going on,” he said.

S.C. Insurance Department Director Ray Farmer said Hudson’s story isn’t surprising.

“The networks on the exchange are extremely tight, narrow choices,” Farmer said. “It’s just a matter of time before we hear all kinds of scenarios that no one has thought of yet.” […] (Click here to read the rest of this disturbing story.)

So, not only will you (likely) not keep your doctor under Obamacare, you might not be able to find a doctor at ALL. What an AWESOME program, Democrats!! Wow! You have really outdone yourselves! Ahem.

It really brings Wright’s words home, doesn’t it? The dysfunction, the waste, and the sheer incompetence of the Federal Government. This is why, in my humble opinion, REPEAL is the only way to go with Obamacare. But that’s just me…

This is your Weekend Open Thread, so feel free to talk about any and everything!

Wow Rev Amy, did you just find an honest bureaucrat? I didn’t even know that was possible. What a remarkable man.

I work in healthcare and I see, I really, really, see what’s coming down the tracks. I’m a bit flabbergasted that so many others don’t. I work with some very intelligent, well educated people, familiar both with computers and healthcare systems, and they don’t have a freaking clue. Everything is going to be wonderful and unicorns will dance in the streets. It’s maddening. Patients have begun to complain, to provide evidence of some blatant problems and even in light of that undeniable proof, Obamacare supporters refuse to see. Worse, some are now starting to blame the patients themselves. They must have done something wrong because this healthcare change is allegedly just marvelous for everyone.

Besides losing access to healthcare, Obamacare is delivering identity theft, loss of privacy, estate issues, tax problems, economic issues for businesses, a whole snowball of problems that are bearing down on us like an avalanche. It is going to get so much uglier.

LOL – I know, right? Wonders never cease! I understand that Wright also kept a log of his days there, and yes – he is going to release them. THAT should be interesting, huh?

Thank you so much for sharing your firsthand experience in the healthcare system post-Obamacare. It really is astonishing how Obama supporters simply cannot bring themselves to admit, in the face of mountains of evidence, what a HORRIBLE law this is, and horribly implemented. It is just mind-boggling.

You said it, too – there are so many problems inherent in this law, in the website, to businesses, etc. I cannot fathom how any changes would help enough. It has to be repeal (and I am so sick of Dems acting like Reps have not offered ANY healthcare plans. They HAVE, and have done so for several years now. Yet that is their constant refrain. Ugh.).

Sarah was right on so many things

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yes indeed, she was. Great article. It is unbelievable what the JournoListers, led by Ezra Klein (now at WaPo) did to her after her acceptance speech. They were scared to death of her, so this governor, with the highest approval rating of ANYONE, who before being nominated for the VP slot was enjoying favorable press, all of a sudden became a moron who couldn’t string two words together. It was the most blatant example of how biased our media and journalists have become that I never wanted to see.

She is getting the last laugh, though. She was right, they were wrong, and we are paying the price for the JournoListers’ failure to report on who Obama actually was/is…
