Foreign Policy Foibles Continue *Open Thread*

by

President Obama seems to think his foreign policies are working. Wow. That is kind of amazing in and of itself considering the massive failures he has had (Syria, Russia, Egypt, and more), but yeah, he thinks things are going swimmingly.

Consider these recent comments regarding how Obama marks success, from WaPo:

At a news conference in the Philippines on Monday afternoon, President Obama initially scoffed when a reporter asked him to explain the “Obama doctrine” in light of his handling of recent world events.

[…]

“That may not always be sexy. That may not always attract a lot of attention, and it doesn’t make for good argument on Sunday morning shows,” said Obama, who is nearing the end of a week-long, four-nation tour of Asia. “But it avoids errors. You hit singles, you hit doubles; every once in a while we may be able to hit a home run. But we steadily advance the interests of the American people and our partnership with folks around the world.” […]

Um, he thinks he has avoided errors?? Really?? And Obama thinks he has hit homeruns in foreign policy? Holy smokes. Well, that speaks volumes right there since, IMHO, he has committed plenty of errors, and is having a home run drought.

Of course, Obama couldn’t just let it go without letting his annoyance at being questioned about anything of substance show:

[…] He added later: “We don’t [take action] because somebody sitting in an office in Washington or New York thinks it would somehow look strong.” […]

The problem is, though, which Obama blatantly refuses to acknowledge, is that too often, he takes no real action at ALL:

But Nile Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at the conservative Heritage Foundation, said that Obama’s “track record, as a foreign policy president, has been an exceedingly poor one, despite the spin put on it by the president in Asia.”

“This is not a president who has projected strong U.S. leadership on the world stage or powerful engagement with key American allies,” Gardiner said, adding that “foreign policy often seems to be an afterthought” for Obama.

The past week highlighted some of the downsides to the administration’s strategy, as the Mideast peace process ran aground and Russian President Vladimir Putin showed no interest in bringing a peaceful end to the standoff in Ukraine between pro-Russian separatists and the government in Kiev.[…] (Click here to read the rest.)

No kidding Obama is not projecting “strong U.S. leadership.” I’d say he is doing just about everything BUT projecting strong leadership. And that void is exacerbated by our bumbling, inept, Secretary of State, John Kerry.

It would be hard to miss the absolutely ASININE comments made recently by Kerry in regard to Israel, which, for reasons I simply cannot fathom, Kerry wants to acquiesce to a Palestine with very strong Hamas ties. The president of Palestine, Abbas, recently acknowledged getting closer to Hamas. Here’s a newsflash for Kerry: HAMAS IS A TERRORIST GROUP AND HATES THE UNITED STATES. Why in the WORLD is he attempting to further their cause?? It makes no sense to me. And it made no sense to Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, either. From WaPo

:[…] It was not clear how Hamas would be integrated into the Fatah leadership, or whether the deal will hold. Secretary of State John F. Kerry spoke to Abbas on Thursday, after a call with Netanyahu on Wednesday. The State Department gave few details, but it said Kerry expressed disapproval of the reconciliation plan.

[…]

After a meeting of Netanyahu’s security cabinet, Israel announced Thursday that it will suspend peace talks with Abbas’s envoys at least during that five-week period. After that, the Netanyahu government said, it will refuse to return to talks with any Palestinian government “backed by Hamas.”

“Whoever chooses the terrorism of Hamas does not want peace,” Netanyahu said in a statement issued shortly after the meeting. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

How sad that such a highly placed US Official cannot make that same connection. But Kerry took it a step further, and it is this comment that many of us find abhorrent. From the Daily Beast:

[…] “A two-state solution will be clearly underscored as the only real alternative. Because a unitary state winds up either being an apartheid state with second-class citizens—or it ends up being a state that destroys the capacity of Israel to be a Jewish state,” Kerry told the group of senior officials and experts from the U.S., Western Europe, Russia, and Japan. “Once you put that frame in your mind, that reality, which is the bottom line, you understand how imperative it is to get to the two-state solution, which both leaders, even yesterday, said they remain deeply committed to.”

According to the 1998 Rome Statute, the “crime of apartheid” is defined as “inhumane acts… committed in the context of an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group or groups and committed with the intention of maintaining that regime.” The term is most often used in reference to the system of racial segregation and oppression that governed South Africa from 1948 until 1994.[…] (Click here to read the rest.)

And now you see why a number of elected officials, including Democrats like Sen. Boxer (D-CA), are upset about Kerry’s comments. Naturally, Kerry is trying to walk them back, as The Hill reports, but one cannot unring a bell like that, and Sec. Kerry should know that by now.

My dear friend, Gina, really summed up Kerry’s remarks well in the following comment she made at Facebook, which I share in part here with her permission:

John Kerry is not only an ignorant jackass who has no concept of what apartheid is, but he’s so f’ing uninformed of how non-Jews and Arabs are treated in Israel that his statement puts Israel at severe risk. I can’t even find the words to express how angry, infuriated, and distraught I am. You CAN’T F’ING MAKE PEACE WITH PEOPLE WHO WANT TO DESTROY YOU AND BLOW YOU OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH…

Amen to that. It just further proves the disaster that is the Obama Foreign Policy, and the inexplicable consorting with those who wish to do us harm.

At least that’s what I think. How about you? This is an Open Thread.

I think John Kerry is an embarassment as a SoS. Hillary was just plain lame and now we have a schmuck! But then look who appointed them.

Obama will never see his failures because he can’t. His narcissism gets in the way.

Obama’s pal Candy Crawley tried to ambush Netanyahu and got put in her place very quickly.

    • GinaR Says:

Candy Crawley is as ignorant on what’s happening in Israel and the truth about Hamas and the PLO as John Kerry. Why is it that people just don’t understand that Hamas wants the destruction of Israel, and you cannot negotiate with people who don’t believe you have a right to exist on the face of this earth? No other country, no other people, have been so despised by the rest of the world as Israel and the Jews; no other people and no other country has faced the complete annihilation that Israel and the Jews have, and continue to, face. It’s too bad the US, at least, isn’t as concerned about the extinction of Israel as they are about the extinction of a tortoise of a fish.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

You said exactly what confounds me all the time. Hamas has made no secret that it will not negotiate with Israel and that their goal is the destruction of Israel. What is hard to understand about that? And how can Kerry or any other dunderhead in this country or the State Department then blame Israel for not playing nice? I just don’t get it.

But then I cannot understand how after we were attacked by Radical Islamists, nearly 3 thousand of our people were murdered. Even more would likely have died if not for the courage of the passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93 .

But don’t even hint that you might still have a bit of a trust issue with Muslims and you are the bad guy. An Islamophobe even.

What is wrong with a country that kowtows to those that attack it and attack those within the country who object to that? I just don’t get it.

Marge, honestly, I think abt this a lot and for the life of me, cannot understand why in the HELL we capitulate and attempt to placate people who hate us and want to destroy us. It makes absolutely NO sense to me. None.

And yeah, the revisionist history over 9/11, the umbrage taken by some Muslims abt the audacity of a 7 minute video to tell the TRUTH abt who attacked us and why, just boggles the mind. But this Administration has bent over BACKWARD to ingratiate themselves to people who wish us harm. There is something very, very wrong with that…

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thank you so much for this outstanding video, Marge. A whole lot of our leaders could take a lesson from Netanyahu (including Romney – wish he had given a smackdown to Crowley like Bibib did).

And you are right – Obama’s narcissism is the biggest problem for our nation since it leads to so many debilitating aspects for our country.

Gina, you are so right. It just boggles the mind the tack so many of these people take. How can they be SO clueless abt this? WHY do they think Israel should constantly and continually capitulate to groups that want them annihilated?? It is sheer insanity.

  2. GinaR Says:

Spot on, Amy. This president and his entourage have made so many foreign policy errors it’s almost impossible to keep up. Most recently, he had to badmouth the US by stating that “…the United States, by the way, has some work to do on these issues” when talking about Malaysia’s issues with human rights. Comparing the US to Malaysia?? This is a president who despises his own country and speaks ill of it any time he can. This is a president who thinks the US is “too big for its britches” and needs to be taken down a notch or two. This is a president who thinks the US should NOT be a superpower and should hand over the reins to the UN (despicable body of anti-semites and misogynists that they are). I suppose, if the true goal of this president, as it relates to foreign policy, is to remove the US from being a beacon of light to the rest of the world and turning us into another socialist country that is doomed to destruction, just as every socialist country that has come before, then his foreign policy IS, in HIS eyes, a success. I wonder if we can last another 3 years?

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It is appalling to have a US president who thinks so little of the country and citizenry who elected him. (Then again, since he is a charlatan, maybe he thinks anyone who voted for him isn’t too bright. Ahem.) But to go abroad and run down one’s own nation and people is just wrong, ESPECIALLY in terms of human rights! He is going to compare the USA to MALAYSIA??? According to Wikipedia, Reporters Without Borders ranked it 147 out of 180 in that regard: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_Malaysia

So, yeah, – we are a FAR cry better in terms of human rights than most nations in the world, a fact our own president should be trumpeting. Grrrr.

I don’t know the answer to your question, Gina. I sure hope we can…

  3. foxyladi14 Says:

    Kerry should resign. 😡

  4. Katherine B. Says:

Kerry is such a pompous ass. I can think of nothing else to say about him.
