Hearings, Hearings Everywhere *Open Thread* UPDATED

Update at the end of the post.

As I type, there is currently a House Hearing on the EPA (click HERE to watch the hearing). This Fox News headline says it all: EPA accused of tolerating rampant employee misconduct, obstructing probes (h/t to Helen, too, for a link in the Comments at the Gowdy post).

This is no small thing, nosirree. Check out some of the major issues being addressed by the Hearing:

The EPA was accused Wednesday of tolerating waste, fraud and “criminal conduct” in its own ranks, as a House committee hearing aired allegations of employee misconduct that have cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The inspector general’s office — the official watchdog tasked with overseeing the agency — also claims it’s being blocked from doing its job by a unit within the EPA.

“I’m very concerned that vital information regarding suspected employee misconduct is being withheld from the OIG,” Patrick Sullivan, assistant inspector general, testified before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

“This is truly a broken agency,” committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., said, adding that the employee problems have gotten to the point of being “intolerable.”

The committee revealed several startling allegations and cases shared by the inspector general’s office. In one case, an employee was getting paid for one or two years after moving to a retirement home, where the employee allegedly did not work. When an investigation began, the worker was simply placed on sick leave.

In another case, an employee with multiple-sclerosis was allowed to work at home for the last 20 years. However, for the past five years, she allegedly produced no work — though she was paid roughly $600,000. She retired after an investigation. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

That is just the beginning. The Washington Times has this little newsflash of how your taxpaying dollars have been used by the EPA:

One EPA employee spent up to six hours a day looking at pornography while on the job, and another employee has been allowed to work from home for years but had little to show for it, according to an ongoing internal investigation that the agency’s inspector general will detail to Congress on Wednesday.

The revelations show that time and attendance fraud at the Environmental Protection Agency goes beyond John Beale — the former top official who collected nearly $900,000 in salary and bonuses for time worked when he was pretending to be on secret CIA spy missions.

The pornography case has been referred to the Justice Department. Investigators said they uncovered 7,000 pornographic images on a government server.

“When an OIG special agent arrived at this employee’s work space to conduct an interview, the special agent witnessed the employee actively viewing pornography on his government-issued computer,” Allan Williams, deputy inspector general for the EPA, said in prepared remarks he will deliver Wednesday to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Isn’t that ASTONISHING???? How in the hell can people like this continue to have a job? How can someone who produces NO WORK continue to have a job?? This is appalling, Just appalling.

Which leads to the next hearing on Wednesday, which would be the one to debate and vote on the resolution to charge Lois Lerner with contempt. Of course, the majority of Democrats continue to pick Party over Country as demonstrated by their questioning of Issa as if HE was the one who did something wrong. From the Daily Caller:

Tensions ran high as Democratic Ranking Member Rep. Louise Slaughter and other Democrats grilled Republican House oversight Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, who represented his committee in recommending contempt. The committee considered resolutions both to hold Lerner in contempt and also to call Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special prosecutor in the case. Democrats in the hearing consistently expressed certainty that the contempt citation against Lerner will pass Wednesday.

Tensions flared between Issa and Ranking Member Rep. Louise Slaughter, who said that progressive groups were also targeted by the IRS. “You could not be more wrong. You could not be more wrong,” Issa said.

Non-voting judiciary committee member Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee called the resolutions “constitutionally deficient” and slammed Republicans for “pure political theater” and for conducting a “foolhardy witch hunt” and “unfortunate charade.”

Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly said that he is sure the contempt vote for Lerner will be along party lines. Democratic Rep. Jim McGovern criticized a “let’s investigate the administration week” event that he accused Republicans of organizing by investigating the IRS scandal and Benghazi.

“What happens with the IRS is that we should get off of their backs,” said Democratic Rep. Alcee Hastings.
(Click here to read the rest.)

Of course, Slaughter would grill Issa and try to equate the SIX (6) Progressive groups to the TWO HUNDRED NINETY TWO (292)Tea Party. Talk about “fuzzy math.” That the ranking Democrat would choose to try and dismiss what the IRS has been doing and trying to claim some quality in targeting is telling indeed, but no more so than Hastings saying, “we should get off of their backs,” or for Connolly to flat out claim the vote will likely be along party lines.

That is reprehensible. There is no other way to look at it, IMO. Democrats are saying that they could care LESS that the IRS has been turned into a bludgeoning tool of their political enemies, and are unwilling to hold anyone accountable for that. Their attitude is stunning to me, and they are being derelict in their duty. Hopefully, the Republicans will prevail and hold Lerner in contempt.

Finally, we have the House Benghazi Committee forming. The Senate GOP has made it known that they want in on this. Should be interesting to see what comes of that request. And it is interesting timing amidst threats against Rep. Trey Gowdy (h/t Helen), who will chair the Committee. I imagine the Democrats will dismiss those threats, too, since they have already claimed it is A-Okay to sacrifice 4 Americans in the name of Politics and re-election. Watch the discussion here as Bob Beckel dismisses the investigation as just essentially just politics:

That is the new Democrat meme – switch the focus, and yell, “So what? Who cares?” It is ABHORRENT. Absolutely ABHORRENT. To even make this claim is immoral, unethical, and disgusting on the part of the Democrats. WOW.

Okay – I can’t say anymore right now and not cuss a blue streak. So, I’ll turn it over to you, and let you cuss a blue streak if you so desire. Consider this an Open Thread. Again, once the vote is final, I’ll let you know.

UPDATE: Thanks to a heads up by Helenk, I can announce that the House found Lerner in contempt 231 – 187. The Hill has the story:

The House voted Wednesday to hold former IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress for refusing to testify about the agency’s improper scrutiny of Tea Party groups.

The 231 to 187 vote, which attracted just 5 Democrats, marked the latest escalation in the nearly yearlong IRS controversy, which broke last May when Lerner acknowledged and apologized for the agency’s singling out of Tea Party groups seeking tax-exempt status.

Republicans said the move to hold Lerner in contempt was both reluctant and a long time coming, after they’d tried to secure her testimony for more than 11 months.

“The contempt of the U.S. House of Representatives is a serious matter, and one we take only when duly warranted,” House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said on the House floor. “There are few government abuses more serious than using the IRS to punish American citizens for their political beliefs.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

How very sad that only 6 Democrats voted to hold Lerner in contempt after all of the political machinations that have come from her and her office (The Hill is incorrect according to this Fox article, but still, it’s pitiful). I can only conclude that their mantra,”Party before Country,” continues. But good for those who voted to stand up for us. Job well done.

Here’s Trey Gowdy on Morning Joe – just an “Ol Country Lawyer”

And what more could one want than a FAIR hearing? I mean really fair, not in the “fairness” sense of the Dems who think they should get whatever they want if they throw a temper tantrum, or equate 6 to 292, but REAL fairness. What a concept.

  2. kenoshamarge Says:

Beckel is a hypocrite. He rants and raves about the right investigating Benghazi, and pulls a “Hillary” by saying what does it matter but as the rest of the panel reminds hims, if the parties were switched he’d be all for hanging a Republican Administration from the yardarm. I don’t understand how the rest of those on “The Five” can be friends with him. Evidently he and Sean Hannity are real pals too. Ugh!

But then yesterday Juan Williams was on and so I deleted the whole show. I will not watch that man!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yes, Juan was saying the same thing. It is the new meme – “what difference does it make? Sure it was part of the election strategy, who cares?” It is beyond reprehensible this mindset. Like I said, I think it is immoral and unethical. How these people can even sleep at night is beyond e.

I don’t know, either, Marge – I guess they completely block out all things politics. But still, I have found both Juan and Bob to be COMPLETE sexist pigs, so even hanging out with them not talking politics would be hard for me…

      • kenoshamarge Says:

There was a time in this country when saying “what differance does it make” about lying would be viewed with disgust. That was back in a time when morals and ethics and integrity were things to applaud and strive for. I fear, I believe, that for many that time is past. Being “cool’ or in fashion is far more important these days.

Speaking of which, I very much like the smart and attractive women on “Outnumbered”. But I hope they all wear panties because if those skirts hike up just a tad more… Is this really necessary? Or am I just an old prude?

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I heard Todd Starnes talking abt this yesterday (he wrote a book abt it). He concurred that things that we considered immoral just five years ago are now cool. I mean, really,Twerking is A-Okay to show on tv when CHILDREN are watching. It’s the norm now, not over the line, and not gratuitous sex act imitation. We have seen for the past 2 presidential elections that winning at all costs is great – hey, what’s the big deal – our side WON! Bwahahahaah! Doesn’t matter if it is through fraud, cheating, demonizing, intimidation, etc., etc.

It is disturbing. Morals and ethics are old-fashioned now, I guess. Don’t know how this happened, but that’s where we are now, it seems.

When I have been able to catch “Outnumbered,” I have liked it. And funny abt the women. Honestly, I imagine they must be COLD since they aren’t in suits the way the men are. 🙂

I could not believe it when I saw that this woman used this as a joke. It is unbelievable. Thank HEAVENS some of these folks fought back against her sick, twisted humor.

Meanwhile. a bi-partisan Government group has prepared a report in which the Obama Administration is taken to task for its failure to hold our “friends” accountable for it: http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/05/07/us-panels-report-documents-christians-under-siege-in-arab-world/?intcmp=latestnews

Here is an excerpt from the article:The report identified the 16 worst violators of religious freedom, designating them “countries of particular concern.” It said Iran, a fixture on the commission’s reports since it began issuing them in 1999, has only gotten worse since “purportedly moderate President Hassan Rouhani” came to power last year.

“As of February 2014, at least 40 Christians were either in prison, detained or awaiting trial because of their religious beliefs and activities,” noted the report.

Saudi Arabia — a traditional U.S. ally in the Gulf region — was criticized because it bans all non-Islamic religious institutions and practices.

“Not a single church or other non-Muslim house of worship exists in the country,” the report stated. Some Saudi Arabia textbooks in 2013/2014 “justified violence against apostates and polytheists and labeled Jews and Christians ‘enemies.’
Yeah – our “friends, the Saudi Arabians – the one whose king Obama bowed to when they met. Yep.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Of course there are the Coptic Christians in Egypt who have been slain with impunity, and so many more across the world…

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

      Oh, great – thank you!!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

One important point Rep. Jordan made in this is that 26 Democrats joined with the Reps in wanting a Special Counsel on the IRS. Good for them. I have to give them props for doing the right thing.

  12. helenk3 Says:

trey is on Kelly file now

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Dangit, missed him. I’ll have to wait for the video.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Trey is all over! Good. The more he’s seen the more people will be interested in his committee. He was on Morning Joe yesterday and has an article in USA Today today. If no one pays attention to the Special Committee it won’t be because Trey Gowdy didn’t try to drum up interest. Go Trey!

    • kenoshamarge Says:

But Helen, there’s nothing “new” to discover about Benghazi. Hillary Clinton says she’s absolutely satisfied.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Uh, yeah. Right. People have said she already testified, but she wouldn’t answer the real questions from Reps, and the Dems were just fawning all over her because she racked up a bunch of air miles. It was the most pathetic thing I have ever seen.

  13. helenk3 Says:

    good question

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It is a good question, and a very disturbing one, It is amazing that someone with his connections has a seat at the table in this Administration.

  14. kenoshamarge Says:

Hillary Clinton is all concerned about the girls kidnapped by Boko Haram. Now.How about when she was SoS?

Hillary’s State Department Refused to Brand Boko Haram as Terrorists

Under Hillary Clinton, the State Department repeatedly declined to fully go after the terror group responsible for kidnapping hundreds of girls.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Marge, I am just STUNNED by this. And I am angry abt it. I just added this link to the bottom of my post about to come up. If we need any more evidence of this Administration’s unwillingness to hold terrorists accountable, I don’t know what it could be. You know, beside having MB affiliated people in the WH and all as Helen’s link evidenced. WOW. Just WOW.
