Obama’s House of Cards *Open Thread* *Updated*

Update at the bottom of the post.

Even though I am still on vacation, one would have to be living in a hole to not know about the goings on with Obama and his latest stunt. Just to sum up though, this past weekend, Obama staged yet another one of his celebratory hooplas in the Rose Garden. This time, it was to celebrate the release of the Army Sergeant, Bowe Bergdahl, who went missing five years ago, and who was being held by the Taliban. Obama managed to secure his release by handing over five of the most dangerous terrorists at Gitmo. Without telling anyone first, that is. So there Obama stood, with Bergdahl’s parents.

There were just a few problems with this. Obama made this statement in the Rose Garden:

His parents thought about him and prayed for him every single day, as did his sister Sky, who prayed for his safe return. He wasn’t forgotten by his community in Idaho, or the military, which rallied to support the Bergdahls through thick and thin. And he wasn’t forgotten by his country, because the United States of America does not ever leave our men and women in uniform behind.

While I am sure his parents are very happy to be reunited with their son, so happy the father opened his remarks by praying in Arabic thanking Allah, this representation of Bowe bergdahl is just a TAD misleading.

And why do I saw that? Because back in 2010, the Pentagon determined that, as many of the soldiers who served with Bergdahl are now claiming, Bergdahl was a deserter:

A Pentagon investigation concluded in 2010 that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl walked away from his unit, and after an initial flurry of searching the military decided not to exert extraordinary efforts to rescue him, according to a former senior defense official who was involved in the matter.

Nathan Bradley Bethea, who served as an officer in Bergdahl’s unit, said in an article Monday on the Daily Beast website that Bergdahl was not on patrol, as some reports have suggested.

“There was no patrol that night,” he wrote. “Bergdahl was relieved from guard duty, and instead of going to sleep, he fled the outpost on foot. He deserted. I’ve talked to members of Bergdahl’s platoon_including the last Americans to see him before his capture. I’ve reviewed the relevant documents. That’s what happened.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Moreover, he RAILED against the United States in an email home to his parents, claimed he was ashamed to be an American, and more. Heck, Rolling Stone had an aricle including the entire email a couple of years ago, as the Klown at the Crawdad Hole pointed out (h/t to a friend for that):

[…] “The future is too good to waste on lies,” Bowe wrote. “And life is way too short to care for the damnation of others, as well as to spend it helping fools with their ideas that are wrong. I have seen their ideas and I am ashamed to even be american. The horror of the self-righteous arrogance that they thrive in. It is all revolting.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

And this is for whom SIX SOLDIERS died in an attempt to return him to the base. This is for whom Obama traded five terrorists who will only be in Qatar (a Muslim Brotherhood-sympathizing country) for a year before being returned to Afghanistan. Oh, and speaking of Afghanistan, Obama didn’t bother to tell them he was pulling this stunt. Karzai is PISSED OFF about it, too.

And the release of those terrorists by Obama? It was definitely against the law, according to not one, but TWO liberal law professors, Jonathan Turley at George Washington, and Jeffrey Toobin at Harvard. First to Professor Turley from the Daily Caller:

[…] Turley spoke with CNN anchor Carol Costello on Monday about the weekend prisoner swap, which saw Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl released from Taliban custody in exchange for five top-ranking Taliban officials held at Gitmo. Republicans in Congress have already accused the White House of ignoring a law requiring a 30-day notification before any prisoners are transferred from the high-security Caribbean prison, and have promised to hold hearings on the issue.

“Did the White House violate federal law?” Costello asked Turley.

“They did,” the professor replied matter-of-factly. “I don’t think that the White House is seriously arguing that they’re not violating federal law. And to make matters worse, this is a long series of violations of federal law that the president’s been accused of. … This is going to add to that pile. I don’t think there’s much debate that they’re in violation of the law.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

And now to Professor Toobin:

There you have it from two big-time . Obama very clearly broke the law. Congress absolutely needs to move swiftly to hold him accountable for this MASSIVE breach of law which has placed our country in danger. Again.

And for what? According to this Pentagon official, for politics, plain and simple. From the Daily Caller:

Here is the truth: The deal to trade five senior Taliban detainees to secure the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was political. It was publicly justified with lies, it breaks decades of U.S. policy, it breaks American law, it puts Americans at risk, it undermines the government of Afghanistan, and it passes responsibility on to the next administration.

But first of all, it was political. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

I am sure the Bergdahls will be happy to get their son back. There are six families who will never see their children again because of him, though. And a deserter does not deserve this kind of celebratory return, especially by the President of the United States.

At least that’s what I think. How about you? This is an Open Thread, and I am going back to my vacation now!

UPDATE: A Facebook friend had an article that led to this NY Times report on Sgt Bergdahl:

Sometime after midnight on June 30, 2009, Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl left behind a note in his tent saying he had become disillusioned with the Army, did not support the American mission in Afghanistan and was leaving to start a new life. He slipped off the remote military outpost in Paktika Province on the border with Pakistan and took with him a soft backpack, water, knives, a notebook and writing materials, but left behind his body armor and weapons — startling, given the hostile environment around his outpost.

That account, provided by a former senior military officer briefed on the investigation into the private’s disappearance, is part of a more complicated picture emerging of the capture of a soldier whose five years as a Taliban prisoner influenced high-level diplomatic negotiations, brought in foreign governments, and ended with him whisked away on a helicopter by American commandos. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Oh, the article went on to say that Bergdahl was PROMOTED to Sergeant in captivity. I am trying to figure out just how in the HELL a deserter gets a promotion, but am struggling to come up with any reasonable explanation. But that’s just me.

So, yeah – the guy was a deserter, the White House threw this plan to trade him for terrorists a couple of years ago and was rebuked by the Congress so Obama just did it behind their backs, now apologizing, as if THAT is all is required for this “oversight” to a law HE signed this year.

Oh, and just in case you are interested, here is a link to the resume of the five terrorists Obama allowed to be released, now living freely in Qatar – THAT security sure lasted a long time – courtesy of Guy Benson’s article at Townhall.com (the original one the friend referenced mentioned above).

I simply cannot believe to where Obama and his cronies have taken this country in such a short amount of time…

Imagine Jeffry Toobin, Obama butt-kisser extraordinaire since 2008 actually telling the truth. Right there in front of God and everybody. I am goshwoggled!

Jake Tapper is doing some very good reporting on the Bergdahl story. If CNN isn’t careful his journalitic integrity may rescue some of their tarnished reputation.

    • mcnorman Says:

Gosh, CNN…who would have thought? Yes, Tapper is a palate cleanser.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I know, right? Tobin, of all people, flat out announcing that Obama broke the law. Kind of makes you wonder if just maybe Obama will finally be held accountable for something. Hey, I can hope, can’t I?

Yes, Tapper has been doing some great work on this. He is one of the good ones, and has covered this story well.

I saw at BizPacReview.com that a couple of soldiers who, served with Bergdahl were on Megyn Kelly last night (unfortunately, we don’t get Fox here). They seem to have decided the no disclosure statements they were forced to sign are hogwash, and are stating flat out that Bergdahl needs to be court articles. If I could grab the link on this iPad, I would…

And another link I would provide is one from The Hill in which Obama is justifying getting this guy back while releasing the terrorists. He made some comment abt how we don’t leave people behind, presumably even if they are deserters. Just US Ambassadors and CIA personnel fighting for their lives, but not deserters who cost the lives of six soldiers, all while breaking the law. There is nothing Obama thinks he has to obey, apparently…

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I watched the Kelly File last night and the two men who were on both called Bergdahl a deserter – at best. This could be the straw that breaks Obama’s back with the media. Word is even Tweety is miffed with his hero.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yes, he is. The Daily Caller had an article abt him being upset with this whole thing. Gosh, first Matthews and then Toobin, maybe the scales are finally falling from their eyes…

          • kenoshamarge Says:

There may be some hope for Toobin, although I will never trust any of the obamamedia again, but Tweety?

Sorry but ever since that tingle went up his leg I’ve been sure it short-circuited his brain.

He and his goofy sidekick Joan Walsh are two of the stupidist people in media IMO and that takes some doing given the fools that infest our airwaves.

      • justine Says:

Obummer saying “because the USA does not ever leave our men and women in uniform behind” makes me sick. What about the people he left behind in Benghazi? Is it that they weren’t in uniform? How dare he make such an obvious lie?

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Isn’t that just infuriating given Benghazi? Or the Marine sitting in a Mexican jail for making a wrong turn? Seriously, though, for Obama to make a claim like that is both laughable and offensive. He has been trying to get those terrorists out for over two years now, and my bet is it has a lot more to do with them than this one deserter.

        • kenoshamarge Says:

He can say anything he wants and depend on the MSM to cover for him. Or at least he could in the past. This may be a “bridge” too far. He and his merry band of pinheads, who think they are the smartest ones in the room, badly miscalculated.

Hell, even Hillary and her supposed mega political smarts made a miscalculation and is trying to walk it back a tad now that she sees the backlash to the Bergdahl deal.

Groan: Hillary Clinton Was Against Bergdahl Deal With The Taliban Before She Was For It…

Earlier Clinton said she supported it, since then the deal has only looked worse and worse and now her supporters in the White House are leaking reports that she was against the prisoner swap the whole time.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was personally and intensely involved in the debate over swapping five Taliban commanders for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in 2011 and 2012. But she had severe reservations about the potential deal, and was demanding stricter conditions for the release of the prisoners than what President Obama settled for last week.

          more: http://weaselzippers.us/188333-groan-hillary-clinton-was-against-bergdahl-deal-with-the-taliban-before-she-was-for-it/

How very “John Kerryish” of Clinton. I suggested yesterday that she may have miscalculated her support for Obama and his deal – seems she and her minions think so too. Maybe she, and they, are not as smart as advertised.

If I remember correctly that “against it before for it or for it before against it” line didn’t work real well for Kerry.

          • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Now that even the NYT is reporting on Bergdahl’s letter of intent to desert, and his disgust at being an American, we can hope it is indeed FINALLY a bridge too for the media. Still, some of the comments from Dems at these articles just make me SMH. There is simply nothing Obama can do that will ever shake their cultish fervor.

As for Hillary, but of course she was for it before she was against it before she was for it, and around we go. I think all of the Dems seriously miscalculated how mad this was going to make a lot of people, even if Obama is trying the obstructionist charge, he released five very dangerous terrorists who are already loose! The sheer stupidity of even beginning to think Qatar would, or should, protect our national security is glaringly evident. And your cartoon made that point very well.

If nothing else, hopefully this will shift the balance of power so Obama can finally be held accountable for his many scandals…

  2. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Legal Insurrection has a great piece abt this whole issue a Facebook friend brought to my attention, including the Kelly video from last night. That video also shows the happy homecoming from the Taliban members. It just makes my blood boil…

  3. Katherine B. Says:

I watched snippets of Obama in the rose garden including his hugging Bergdahl’s father on TV and I was very curious about this family. Supposedly, the father grew a bead in solidarity with his son who was “captured.” Now that the son is free wouldn’t you think daddy would shave off his beard. Or does he think his son would prefer to see him looking like the Taliban. Then daddy speaks in Pashtun, which he decided to learn while his son was in captivity. Sorry, but this is too strange for me.

Then there have been media reports that the family hasn’t spoken to their son yet. You know, the kid who was a death’s door, which is why Obama had to act without giving Congress the 30 day required notification. If he is so close to death all the more reason the family should at least speak to him, if not get on a damn plane and fly over to Germany to be with him. Somethings are really odd here and not adding up. I’m surprised to see all the questioning media coverage.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yes, it is all very odd, isn’t it? I saw the dad was speaking in Arabic, but regardless, that he chose, as his very first words, an Islamic prayer, praising Allah, is telling indeed.

And I understand for reports I have read that Bergdahl, who,was supposed to be in such bad shape as you noted, walked to the helicopter, was lucid, and is in good shape at the hospital. IOW, it seems like so much BS from Obama to justify freeing these terrorists.

How Obama isn’t being brought up on charges of treason, dereliction of duty, breaking the law (again), is beyond me. For sure, Bergdahl should be courtmartialed if he deserted, but Obama deserves so much more than that…

  4. Katherine B. Says:

I spotted this article on Brietbart about the shooting in the Jewish Museum in Belgium and found it very alarming. Apparently, there was a 2013 report that indicated Belgium had the second highest number of anti-semitic incidents in Europe. What will it take for the “live and let live ” Western democracies to wake up and realize we are the only ones singing that tune. The jihadists are not.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It is really astonishing, isn’t it? We continue to make nice with those who wish to do us harm. I saw an article in Jewsnews.co.il today in which the State Dep’t promoted a Muslim Cleric who is part of a “scholars” group which is a Muslim Brotherhood organization. WTH? If someone had told me five years ago how much the MB would have been propped up by a US government, I would have thought they were nuts. But that is precisely what hams happened under Obama.

Oh, and The Hill has an article that Boehner said the WH proposed this secret trade for Bergdahl two yrs ago, and Congress opposed it. The WH dropped it. So it puts to a lie their BS abt this being a result of his health. Nope, they wanted to release those terrorists all along.

How is this not treason? Seriously. To enable the enemy on this level has got to be treason, right? Just astonishing.

  5. foxyladi14 Says:

It is treason no doubt . 👿

  6. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

So, the WH has apologized for breaking the law. Uh huh. Sorry, if simple apologies worked, there would be no need for attorneys, judges, courts, and police officers. Too little, WAY too late: http://www.aol.com/article/2014/06/03/white-house-apologizes-for-no-notice-on-bergdahl-pow-swap/20905999/?ncid=webmail6

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Even Feinstein seemed a tad reluctant to just accept the apology and move on. No doubt that will change as she finds some reason to blame the GOP for everything. I know one meme is that Obama has to do things this way since the GOP is so obstructionist.

There have been a lot of cartoons, as you might guess, about the Bergdahl deal. And I’ve been collecting them, as you might guess since I am an unabashed cartoon addict. Here’s the one that thus far makes me giggle the most:

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Meanwhile, Harry Reid and Carl Levin are justifying what Obama did. I swear, this is why we are in such a mess – Dems who refuse to hold Obama to the law.

Meanwhile, according to The Hill (which is also where I saw the piece abt Reid), Gragam said Obama could be impeached if he does this again (or words to that effect). Of course, I think he should have already been impeached, and if ever there were an impeachable offense, releasing the Taliban “Dream Team,” as The Hill referred to them, would be it…

      • foxyladi14 Says:

        😆 Marge

  7. Katherine B. Says:

I read a report online somewhere yesterday about Sec. Hagel addressing a group of soldiers saying, “Today is a happy day. We got one of our own back.” And the response from the assembled soldiers was silence. Got me to thinking what would have been the reaction to the Prez if he had made this announcement about Bergdahl during his speech at West Point. Lucky for him he didn’t.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

STUPID AUTOCORECT – I just saw what the iPad autocorrect dod to this comment. Sheesh!!!

Cannot believe Hagel was confirmed, and when he makes tonedeaf, idiotic comments like this, it makes his confirmation that much stupider. There is seriously something wrong with these people that they think the military would be happy that so much has been done to get back this deserter, including releasing such dangerous people to do so. Wow…

      • Katherine B. Says:

When I first read your comment, my first thought was Rev. Amy has had one too many gin & tonics pool side. Made me chuckle, though.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Lol, and if I drank, that would have been a good guess! I swear, this autocorrect has a mind of its own sometimes! 🙂

  8. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

So the Administration is trying to see Senators on their illegal slight of hand. When even Dick Durbin, from ILLINOIS, says it isn’t a “slam dunk,” you know it’s bad: http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/208327-senators-not-sold-on-bergdahl-deal

And here is another article from The Hill referring to the released terrorists as the “Taliban Dream Team”: http://thehill.com/policy/defense/207930-graham-obama-released-taliban-dream-team

  9. mcnorman Says:

Ah, look now we are going to compensate this piece of trash.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

That he got the two automatic promotions even after he deserted, and might get all kinds of compensation for being held after he chose to talk away is infuriating. Ugh.

    • foxyladi14 Says:

What he should get mcnorman is a court martial. 😡

  10. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Marcus Luttrell, of “Lone Survivor” fame, had this to say abt trading terrorists: http://www.bizpacreview.com/2014/06/05/lone-survivor-marcus-luttrell-weighs-in-would-rather-have-died-than-have-us-trade-terrorists-for-him-123302

  11. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Chris Matthews is doubling down – he is FURIOUS at the way the WH is tryig to spin this whole Bergdahl matter: http://dailycaller.com/2014/06/04/matthews-slams-white-house-for-saying-soldiers-are-swift-boating-bergdahl/

Oh, and Rachel Maddow continues to highlight that she has no grasp of logic. Or I should say, she has a firm grasp of logical fallacies: http://dailycaller.com/2014/06/04/maddow-equates-pvt-jessica-lynchs-wrong-turn-in-iraq-to-sgt-bergdahls-desertion-in-afghanistan/

    • Katherine B. Says:

The White House better be careful in their efforts to trash the military guys who did NOT leave their posts and continued to do their duty. These faces that we’re seeing on TV aren’t the usual political hacks and I think most Americans see them as real people and not political operatives. If the W.H. starts trashing them to protect a Bergdahl, that’s not going to work out too well.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Excellent point, Katherine. A friend had a Twitchy.com article in which a higher up fed tried to depict the other soldiers in Bergdahl’s platoon as “psychopaths.” Apparently, he got some grief because he removed his bio from his account. Serves him right if he did. And apparently, Obama continues to be flippant abt people’s concern. You know, his MO. Wow…

  12. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I just saw this and thought, “Whether or not he tried to jon the Taliban is neither here nor there – he deserted, THAT is what matters.” Of course, if he DID try to join the Taliban, that is heinous, and he sure doesn’t deserve any American President singing his praises, but being a deserter alone should make a President refrain from the manner by which Obama has acted. Sadly, that is not Obama: http://dailycaller.com/2014/06/05/krauthammer-new-rosen-report-argues-against-speculation-bergdahl-tried-to-join-the-taliban/

And this part of the article says more: On Thursday afternoon — after days of hinting that he possessed evidence Bergdahl worked extensively with his Taliban captors — Rosen released a report containing information from a private intelligence contractor closely tied to the U.S. military.

The report seems to indicates that Bergdahl converted to Islam, declared himself a holy warrior, engaged in target practice with his captors and was sometimes even allowed to carry a loaded weapon.

But it also noted that the Army Sgt. tried to escape from captivity as many as five times, and at one point was put into a cage built for an animal as punishment. Intelligence officials familiar with the secret documents claimed “there was never any evidence of collaboration.”

The report does not address the contention that Bergdahl deserted his post in disgust over the war effort in 2009 — a claim backed by correspondence between Bergdahl and his father and echoed by all of his former comrades who have spoken to the media.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

And by “attitude,” I mean like this: http://www.bizpacreview.com/2014/06/05/whipped-up-controversy-listen-to-obamas-flip-answer-over-bergdahl-swap-123433

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Bergdahl deserted his post and sought out the Taliban. He volunteerally stuck his stupid head in the lions mouth and then discovered that maybe the “Taliban” wasn’t quite as friendly as the ordinary Afghan people. Why heaven’s to Betsy, they might even be hostile. With guns and everything.

Bergdahl sounds, at least to me, like some kind of a naive, adolescent peacenik from the 60s. Couldn’t he find an enemy canon to get his picture take with the enemy, ala Jane Fonda?

We know how the veterans still loathe Jane Fonda – what do you think the vast majority of them, who did their duty and watched friends die, think of a deserter like Bergdahl?

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I would not be at all surprised to learn that is what happened with him, Marge, not one bit. And for Obama to go on abt not leaving anyone behind after what he did NOT do in Banghazi is just laughable, or would be if it hadn’t been such a tragedy. Honestly, how this man, and the Dems who still stick by his side, can look in the mirror boggles the mind.

And good point abt Fonda. I am guessing a whole lot of people in uniform are going to show up for Bergdahl’s trial…

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, and The Hill has an article that Susan Rice stands by her comments that Berghdahl “served with honor and distinction…” Wow. That says it all abt this Administration.
