Seismic Shift *Open Thread*

Who knew that Tuesday was going to be so monumental as people went out to the polls in primary races? I don’t think anyone called what happened in Virginia. Quite the opposite, in fact – no one saw this coming.

That “something,” of course, is the loss by House Majority Leader, Eric Cantor. According to Bret Baier Tuesday night on Megyn Kelly’s show, this is unprecedented. Never in the history of this country has a Speaker lost his primary. And Cantor lost it to an unknown who had very little money, comparatively speaking. From The Hill:

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), the Speaker-in-waiting, was defeated Tuesday in a primary election by a little-known conservative economics professor, David Brat, in one of the most stunning upsets in modern political history.

Brat defeated Cantor, a six-term incumbent, despite having no experience in elected office and being outspent by nearly 20-to-1. The Associated Press called the race for Brat shortly after 8 p.m., an hour after polls closed in Virginia’s 7th District. Brat was leading Cantor, 56 percent to 44 percent, with 98 percent of precincts reporting. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Yes, stunning defeat, to be sure. And it is WHY Brat beat Cantor that matters. From Fox News:

[…] Brat, an economics professor and political novice, latched onto the hot-button issue of immigration, accusing Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the GOP-led House, of supporting immigration legislation that would give “amnesty” to millions of people living illegally in the United States.

“If you go knocking door to door, you’ll know the American people think they’re in trouble,” Brat told Fox News. “It was a miracle. God gave us this win.”

Brat, a Princeton graduate and seminar(y) student who teaches at Randolph-Macon College, a small liberal arts school north of Richmond, attempted to downplay the Tea Party vs. Washington establishment narrative about the race.

He said he enjoyed Tea Party support but was a candidate focused on Republican principles including free markets and “adherence to the Constitution.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Holy moley, this is huge. Clearly, Brat’s message resonated with people. Here is Dave Brat speaking after his decisive win:

One can see why Brat beat Cantor. This quip in the Fox article above says a lot about his mindset:

“Dollars don’t vote, people do,” he told Fox News.

True that, and it is about damn time those in Congress realized that it is about US, and OUR vote.

And in a very funny twist, as Megyn Kelly pointed out, Brat’s opponent in November is another professor from Randolph Macon. Jack Trammel.

Meanwhile, my senator, Lindsey Graham, won the primary yesterday. Sigh. I was at least hoping he would have to face a runoff to fight harder for his seat and to get a message from the people here that we are not thrilled with some of the choices he is making.

That said, my other senator, Sen. Tim Scott, also won HIS primary, and that is good news indeed. He is really connecting with people here, and this win is good news indeed.

Okay, since I am sick, that’s it for me. Feel free to talk about any of this, or the $1.9 BILLION the Senate wants to provide to the massive influx of illegal children in Texas and Arizona (h/y Facebook friend), or Obama issuing (illegally) yet another delay of implementation for Obamacare, or whatever else is on your minds. This is an Open Thread.

Also of major importance this morning is Hagel being questioned abt just who authorized this whole Taliban Transfer thing in the first place. Obama was preening around on his “I make no apologies” tour, and then shifted the blame to Hagel. In a whiplash move, the WH then claimed they were NOT blaming Hagel, presumably to take credit for Bergdahl. Confusing, isn’t it? Let’s see if the House can actually get a straight answer out of Hagel (not holding my breath)…

  2. kenoshamarge Says:

I almost feel sorry for Hagel – he doesn’t do well when questioned. And he has been tossed under the bus and pulled back out again almost immediately so he must be in a daze. His own fault IMO, lay down with dogs – get up with fleas.

As for the Cantor the left is spinning frantically. They are fund raising on it – the evil Tea Party won, while trying to convince establishment Republicans that this had nothing to do with immigration.

Obama Admin Says Cantor’s Support For Amnesty Had Nothing To Do With His Defeat…

Other “classy” folks on the left are suggesting that Cantor lost because he’s a Jew. (He won 7 times in that district and they suddenly discovered that he’s a Jew? Talk about late to the party.)

And schitzophrenic Dingbat Wasserman-Schultz is bleating about the take-over of the GOP by the Tea Party when she was just talking about Tea Party and Establishment being one and the same. But then consider the source – Dingy never says anything coherent, honest or worth hearing.

    • foxyladi14 Says:

      😆 Got that right Marge.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yeah, well, Hagel was lying from the outset, so I don’t have high hopes for anything much coming out of this hearing. He was doing the usual liberal trick of focusing on emotions, and trying to make this all abt poor little Bergdahl who was captured by the terrorists. Never mind that he walked off his post, and lives were lost searching for him. Perhaps Hagel could go back and read the 2010 report from the Pentagon abt Bergdahl’s desertion.

But speaking of spin,t he Democrats have now shown their hand via Rep. Adam Smith of WA in downplaying that the Taliban are TERRORISTS, and that we are simply at war with them, so prisoner exchanges are common when at war. Yep, they are completely downplaying that they are terrorists. I swear, the depths to which they will go to cover Obama’s rear are appalling, especially when they border on treason, like downplaying who the terrorists are.

It is laughable the way the Dems are handling Brat’s win. By all legitimate accounts, he was NOT supported by the big Tea Party groups, but did get Tea Party votes. What the Dems seem to be (intentionally) missing is that people are PISSED OFF at the way Washington is handling things, and they want people who represent US there, not people who care only abt themselves or the Party first.

That said, I have never understood the animus fostered against the Tea Party for wanting to adhere to the Constitution, to have less taxation, and to have smaller gov’t, something for which Bill Clinton was lauded across the land for accomplishing.

Oh, and apparently Hagel, too, downplayed the “negotiating with terrorists” thing. These people make me sick.

      • Katherine B Says:

Rev. Amy – I just posted a comment and for some reason it asked me to fill out my email and my name. After all this time of posting that struck me as odd. Anyway, being a good girl I obliged. The draft is showing my full name and I’d really rather not have that out there. Can you delete that post or change it to Katherine B. Thanks.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I have no idea why it asked you that, either, Katherine, but I did edit out your last name. So sorry abt that!

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Hagel seems to have been better coached for this hearing that he was for his own confirmation hearing. But he lying and spinning and what little respect I had for him is gone.

What is with the lie, “Bergdahl was a POW” being accepted? Am I wrong or doesn’t there have to be a declaration of war with the Taliban for him to be a POW?

And since when do we have a declaration of war with a terrorist group? Or I guess the newer term is Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF),

If we are in a state of war with the Taliban and the terrorists then why are the prisoners at Guantanimo called “detainees”?

It’s hard to know the truth when there is so much lying and spinning and just plain b.s. going on. Be nice if we had a decent media that reported and told us the truth and not what ever suites their ideology.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

EXACTLY, Marge! That is exactly right!! This is their new meme, that they were just exchanging prisoners for our POW since we never leave anyone behind. It is appalling that this is how they are downplaying their interactions with the Taliban.

I have zero – ZERO – respect for Hagel. And for the Dems who are acting all sanctimonious abt what Obama did, acting like this isn’t a political matter, etc., etc. Their behavior is just reprehensible, as is Obama being able to get away with this crap. I say that assuming nothing will happen to him as a result of what he has done, the negotiating with terrorists (even if it WAS via Qatar, it is STILL negotiating), and the appeal to emotion as a way to justify breaking the law. So sick of this crap.

But you hit the nail on the head abt the Taliban, Marge. Well said.

          • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I cannot help but wonder how the members of Bergdahl’s platoon feel abt this new “POW” designation and meme put forth by the Dems.

  3. Katherine B. Says:

I was thinking of Hillary Clinton this morning as I saw a clip of her being interviewed about the notes she kept on Benghazi. The interviewer asked her if she would hand over her notes to the committee investigating Benghazi and unbelievably her response was, “They can read it in the book.” I understand she is on a book tour to promote her book but this struck me as so tasteless. Not to mention her other tasteless remark on how strapped they were in arranging mortgages for their houses. She sounds like an amateur who has never run for office before. Wasn’t she better and sharper in her run for the nomination?

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Can you BELIEVE Hillary said that?? What a crock – “read it in the book. How abt you actually tell the truth to the COMMITTEE, Hillary??? WTH is wrong with these people??? I swear – they have gotten away with so much it is just mind boggling. Kinda like how now the Dems are claiming Bergdahl was a POW, and one Dem just rebuked a Rep saying he must be going for the Speaker’s position, and can we not make this political BS as if this is anything BUT political!!!

Ugh. Sorry. I am just so disgusted by what this Administration is doing, and all that they are being ALLOWED to get away with, without any real comeuppance. Just infuriating.

As for Clinton, YES, she was much sharper when she was running back in 2008. I don’t know what the hell happened except she is contantly trying to engage in CYA after her stint in Obama’s White House…

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I never thought she was a particularly adept campaigner, unlike her spouse. But she hasn’t had to face a campaign in a while. And she is stumbling out the gate. Maybe that’s why the “book tour” is being used as a trial run.

  4. Katherine B Says:

I see that something very strange is happening at the Washington Post. Some reporter is actually investigating Sgt. Bergdahl and found out he washed out of the Coast Guard in less than a month. So he couldn’t get in the French Foreign Legion – like every other American kid – and he gets discharged from the Coast Guard.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Wait, what??? A WaPo reporter is actually – gasp – REPORTING? Dang, what is the world coming to?! 😉

And isn’t that interesting abt Sgt Bergdahl and his “storied” career! Hmm. Thanks for sharing some actual facts regarding this guy. I had seen before where he mentioned wanting to be in the French Foreign Legion, or being a mercenary. Nice…

  5. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Well, Bret Baier called it – Eric Cantor is stepping down as House Majority Leader:

  6. kenoshamarge Says:

What do you think of this piece by Sean Trende on what happened with Cantor and Graham?

What Cantor’s Loss and Graham’s Win Mean

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Very interesting hypothesis. I can certainly see that being the case for Graham. I think it was Laura Ingraham last night who said that Graham is the consummate politician – he knows just what he needs to do. I think he did not take this race for granted, and was spending some time here. He also made it a point to say he would work with the Tea Party, unlike some other Republicans (a topic they discussed last night). While I know people are unhappy with a lot of the things he has done, he does some things right, too, so I guess they figured his clout and tenure would make him a better candidate to stay in than a newbie.

Overall, I thought it was a good piece. Thanks so much for that.

What was your take on it?

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I was impressed with the thought that went into the piece. But Sean Trende usually does have thoughtful and/or well documented articles.

I wouldn’t think that people are any less angry with Graham on some topics, immigration being one, but he is spot on when it comes to the VA scandal and the Bergdahl mess. And he seems to know how to stay home and talk to the people much better than Cantor. With Cantor there is an air of arrogance that I don’t feel with Graham.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

That’s right, Marge, and since he is still serving in the Guard (he is a colonel, and was a JAG officer), he does have a tremendous commitment to the military. That is HUGE in this state. That goes hand in hand with his position on the VA and Bergdahl, too. So, yeah – people might be angry abt things like immigration, but they know he is pushing hard on some of these other issues abt which people care deeply (Benghazi, too).

I really appreciate the article – yes, “thoughtful” is a good word to describe it!

  7. helenk3 Says:

new info on Benghazi. when the video becomes available it is worth watching

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I saw Maj. Stahl on Special Report. I was moved to tears as he spoke of the betrayal of those serving us by this Administration (I already have a draft I am working on this very article – just heartbreaking, and infuriating).

  8. helenk3 Says:

    this could get interesting

  9. helenk3 Says:

another reason the obama channel msnbc is dead last in poll on trustworthy news outlets

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

There is something seriously wrong with that man. But hey, we knew this was coming from Matthews. Since he expressed disdain for the way the Bergdahl thing was handled, we knew his carrying the water again was only a matter of time…

my mustang just left for Florida. On Saturday, the pod with my furniture and things will leave for Florida. On Tuesday i will leave for Florida. My computer will be disconnected and packed tomorrow.
to all here, I SHALL RETURN. but it might be a while.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, wow, Helen – that is exciting! Those pods are SO convenient, aren’t they? We will miss you during your relocation, but sure hope everything goes SMOOTHLY for you!

Btw, we just put our house on the market yesterday. I hope, and pray, we sell it as quickly as you did yours!

      • helenk3 Says:

good luck with the selling of your house. Moving to Fla???

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thank you! And no, we have decided to stay in the Charleston area. We love it here so much, it would be very hard to leave it, especially as long as our Jordan is alive (our friends can travel to us, Jordan not so much)…

  12. helenk3 Says:

Charles Krauthammer talked about the silent takeover of the EPA under backtrack and the long lasting economic disasters it will cause. backtrack don’t need no stinkin congress he has people in place to create regulations

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It is astonishing what Obama is being able to get away with in this country. And yes, the EPA regulations alone are just staggering. Yet, he couldn’t do this without the Dems continuing to cover his backside like they did yesterday in the Hagel hearing…

  13. helenk3 Says:
