History Repeating Itself, And Gowdy Has A Dream *Open Thread* UPDATED

by

Update at the end of the post.

Our morning paper, the Post and Courier, had a very good commentary on Monday by a former executive editor of the paper, R. L> Schreadley, entitled, “Speeding down Obama’s road to ruin.”

The examples Schreadley gives are good ones indeed, but it was the quote with which he opened the commentary that really struck me. From the Post and Courier:

“It is with a strange feeling that those of us who came from the Soviet Union look upon the West of today. It is as though we were neither neighbors on the same planet nor contemporaries. And yet we contemplate the West from what will be your future, or we look back seventy years to see our past suddenly repeating itself. And what we see is always the same as it was then: adults deferring to the opinion of their children; the younger generation carried away by shallow, worthless ideas; professors scared of being thought unfashionable; journalists refusing to take responsibility for the words they squander so easily; universal sympathy for revolutionary extremists; people with serious objections unable or unwilling to voice them; the majority passively obsessed by a feeling of doom; feeble governments; societies whose defensive reactions have become paralyzed; spiritual confusion leading to political upheaval. What will happen as a result of all this lies ahead of us. But the time is near, and from bitter experience we can easily predict what these events will be.”

– Alexander Solzhenitsyn, “The Gulag Archipelago”

How disturbing is this? And how eerily prescient is it to what is happening in this country now? Indeed, history is repeating itself with this current Administration. There are any number of examples one can give to support this, and Schreadley has a few, some of which follow. Again, from the Post and Courier:

[…] Participation in the American labor force is smaller than it has been since the Great Depression. Unemployment is abnormally high, much higher than officially acknowledged. Wages are stagnant. Fewer people are producing, and more are consuming. You do not have to have a Ph.D. in economics to know what that is doing to the very fabric of the Republic.

You cannot have an open border without eroding the cultural character of the American people. You cannot have tens of thousands of unaccompanied children cross that border, without hindrance, and maintain the fiction that the border is secure. The pictures of these children in holding pens should shock the conscience of every American. It demands answers. It demands answers now. What prompted this Children’s Crusade? What executive action, what congressional inaction, triggered it?

You cannot abandon America’s role as defender of liberty in a dangerous world. You cannot control or influence world events while withdrawing troops even as the wars we are engaged in are ongoing. In no time in the last hundred years has U.S. foreign policy seemed so feckless as it has under this administration. Where are the grownups in the White House? In the State and Defense departments? On Capitol Hill? […] (Click here to read the rest.)

I can answer that question: no. One need look no further than Iraq as Islamic extremists continue to march on, taking over two more towns, and moving to take over the border to JORDAN. Yahoo News reports:

[…] The fall dealt Iraq’s embattled Shiite prime minister a further blow and brought the war to the doorstep of Jordan, a key ally of the United States that also borders embattled Syria to its north.

The blitz by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in Iraq’s vast western desert takes the al-Qaida-breakaway group closer to its dream of carving out a purist Islamic state straddling both Syria and Iraq.

Controlling the borders with Syria will also help it supply fellow fighters in Syria with weaponry looted from Iraqi warehouses, significantly reinforcing its ability to battle beleaguered Syrian government forces.

If they succeed in their quest, they could further unsettle the already volatile Middle East and serve as a magnet for Jihadists from across the world β€” much like al-Qaida attracted extremists in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Yep, history is definitely repeating itself, and Obama did help build this.

Meanwhile, in another instance of history repeating itself, IRS Chief John Koskinen will appear before another House committee today chaired by Darrell Issa. I think we can count on more duplicity and flat out lying by Koskinen, as well as sanctimonious, patronizing, umbrage at the audacity of anyone questioning such a fine, upstanding man by the Democrats, followed by outrage and frustration from Republicans. This should NOT be a partisan issue. If anything affected Americans across the board more in these scandals, I don’t know what it is. But since so many Democrats have their hand in the actions of the IRS, their faux umbrage would be laughable if the situation wasn’t so serious.

Ugh.

I look forward, though, to questioning by some of those who want to learn the truth, including SC Rep. Trey Gowdy. He has a way of cutting through to the heart of the matter in a way that is both brilliant, and funny, while holding the witness to account.

But it is the “funny” side of Gowdy with which I wish to close. Oh, his usual brilliance and story-telling ability is still on display in the video below, but it is his humor that is the star of the show at a recent GOP event in Maryland (h/t BizPacReview):

Oh, my – totally cracked me up! Hope it made you smile, too, as a respite from all the machinations of the ruin Obama is bringing upon this country.

And now it is your turn. This is an Open Thread.

UPDATE: If you watched the IRS Hearing Monday night, you got to see some major fireworks, as well as the predicted sanctimonious responses by the Democrats (most of them anyway), who chose to use their time to act as if they were defending Koskinen’s character, but were simply refusing to hold him, and the IRS, accountable.

But plenty of Republicans did, including the one and only, Trey Gowdy. And did he ever. Here is his exchange with Chairman Koskinen (h/t Kenoshamarge):

Wow, right? Gowdy nails the issues so well, and Koskinen continued his refusal to actually answer any of the questions in any real way. Is he just incompetent? Dissembling? Stonewalling? Protecting? All of the above? I guess time will tell, but what is clear is that, sadly, this HAS become a partisan issue since Democrats are busy trying to provide cover for people like Elijah Cummings, Senators Schumer and Durbin, and who knows who else. If only the Republicans are interested in getting to the bottom of the most powerful agency in the country targeting private citizens, so be it, but that says a lot, and none of it good, IMHO.

There is IRS hearing Tuesday morning, featuring a former IRS attorney who now works in the White House, Jennifer O’Connor. Should be interesting – can’t wait to see what comes of THAT hearing!

Okay – back to you!

    Good Monday morning Amy.
Boy Howdy I love me some Trey Gowdy. πŸ˜€

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

LOL – I know just what you mean, Foxy! And a good morning to you, too! πŸ™‚

  2. kenoshamarge Says:

As you know I am a big fan of Congressman Trey Gowdy. Never more so than after watching that video. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. Now I’m gonna steal it and spread it around.

  3. foxyladi14 Says:

    Still talking about Hillary. πŸ™„

  4. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Rep. Gowdy had the following link on Facebook to be able to watch the hearing with Koskinen tonight at 7 (EST). Cannot WAIT to watch Gowdy question him!

    Here’s the link: http://oversight.house.gov/hearing/irs-obstruction-lois-lerners-missing-e-mails/

  5. mcnorman Says:

I love Gowdy. I particularly enjoyed him this evening.Hewent after Gollum like a pitbull. He went after him as a litagator. Gollum is a smug sob. Bonuses and parties galore because they do not answer to the taxpayer. The audacity do state that Zerocare is overwhelming then budget is amazing. There is a special place in Hell for these people. It all begins with the jerk at the top. I feel like I am watching Watergate allover again.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Wasn’t he AWESOME?!?! I cannot wait for that video to come available. I will add it as an Update to this post.

LOL abt “Gollum” – that is spot on, mcnorman! And yes, he is smug. His non-answers make me nuts. And like Obama, he seems to be completely oblivious to anything going on in the IRS, and seems unwilling at best to do the very LEAST of his due diligence in passing on relevant information to both Congress, and other agencies involved in pursuing this.

Yeah – it’s looking a whole lot like Watergate or worse…

      • mcnorman Says:

I was really turned off by the Dems. They are sickening. The amount of arse kissing is incredible. Makes me wonder how much lying they’ve been doing on those taxes. I think what bothers me the most about this commissh is his snotty attitude…no one can touch me syndrome. It’s almost like watching some of the mafiosos from days gone by.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

No kidding, huh? Tammy Duckworth actually took the matter seriously, but for the most part, the Dems simply took umbrage that Koskinen was being questioned by the Republicans and how DARE they question such a great public servant. One who seems either incompetent or unresponsive.

  6. mcnorman Says:

Reblogged this on Mcnorman's Weblog and commented:
Food for thought. Then again, many of us have been thinking this for a long, long time.

  7. kenoshamarge Says:

For all of us who are watching the IRS Scandal in disbelief – for all of us who have found a deep disdain for Commissioner Koskinnen and his arrogance here is our hero Trey Gowdy eviserating him at the Issa hearings last night.

Funny how Koskinnen doesn’t look near as arrogant by the time Gowdy was done with him.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thank you so much for this, Marge. I am going to update this post with this video. Gowdy is just such a tremendous legal mind, isn’t he? Koskinen is completely out of his depth up against Gowdy. Holy smokes, he is incredible.

And yeah, Koskinen, a Clinton Administration person, is infuriating in his circular responses and complete refusal to answer the questions asked in any real way. If he thinks he has helped improve the impression of the IRS, he has done the exact opposite.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Here’s some more on the hearing you might enjoy. I do “like” Katie Pavlich!

Katie Pavlich’s live tweets from the hearing – note how Elijah Cummings gets Bush in – tries to use “Donna” Perino and how quickly “Dana” Perino responds.

        http://twitchy.com/2014/06/23/im-tired-of-your-game-playing-darrell-issa-blasts-irs-commissioner/

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, that is fantastic, Marge. And I love Perino’s response. Of COURSE Cummings lied abt the emails. He has a vested interest in the truth not being known abt the IRS or it could add weight to the charge HE targeted a citizen based on politics…

          • kenoshamarge Says:

The thing that struck me here is that how quickly Katie and Dana refudiated Cummings. On twitter where the young people that the left depends on so much are far more apt to be paying attention than reading the WSJ or the NYT orwatching the MSM.

At one time the left was far ahead of the right on technology and the social media. They may still be ahead of the GOP leadership, although if Cummings, Reid and Pelosi are any example the lefty leadership is pretty clueless too, but they sure are not ahead of young people like Perino, Pavlich, Guy Benson also from Townhall and a host of others. If you watch Neil Cavuto often you will see a parade of eager young faces with some very big brains behind the good looks.

  8. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Speaking of Cummings and Tweets, Marge, this article had some very funny Tweets abt Cummings almost bursting into tears that Koskinen might have to – GASP! – answer questions: http://www.bizpacreview.com/2014/06/24/issa-brings-unsupervised-child-to-tears-dem-elijah-cummings-all-broken-up-at-irs-hearing-127556

Great point abt using technology. That is definitely a plus in correcting the erroneous information put out by people like Cummings.

That kind of thing – throwing out false claims like that, as well as making this all abt emotion, seems to be the bread and butter for these folks now. I just don’t get it. It bespeaks a level of immaturity to me, and I see it often in responses from people like my sister, an irrational, emotional response to issues, often coupled with a false dilemma.

That’s what the Dems were doing last night, and I expect more of the same this morning, unfortunately.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

That kind of behavior may appeal to like minds but there are a whole lot of adults in this country that are sick to death of politicians and their adolescent name-calling and blame-gaming behavior.

Even many Dems see the tactic of blaming Bush 6 years into Obama’s term(s) as foolish.

I was thinking that the worse the scandals get the more of a lame duck Obama becomes and that would be a good thing. Then I read Thomas Sowell’s excellant article this morning and now I’m not so sure. See what you think…

      A Lame Duck Country? http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2014/06/24/a_lame_duck_country_123090.html

Oh and here’s a Trey Gowdy quote you might enjoy:

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Great quote by Gowdy, and I could not agree more with him!

And the Thomas Sowell article is very good. I think he is saying much the same as liberal law professor, Jonathan Turley (video below). That two sides could so agree on Obama’s behavior is telling indeed, isn’t it? Thanks so much for that – Sowell has quite a mind, doesn’t he?

Oh, and I have long thought that Biden was picked for VP for the same reason – impeachment insurance. No doubt in my mind.

        Here’s the Turley video:

      • foxyladi14 Says:

Love this comment too Marge. πŸ™‚

Mike CJ β€’ 10 hours ago

Sowell is right. The writing is on the wall. Same as it was in Iraq when ISIS took over Fallouja a few months back.

Nobody did anything then, and nobody is going to do anything now.

Obama is just going to take the role of dictator and run with it. When he leaves, we will be cleaning up the mess for decades. I’ve see things happen this term I never thought I’d ever see happen in the US government.

Hugo Chavez made the blueprint for how to use the rules of a democracy to turn it into a dictatorship in practice.

By the way, even Crazy Joe would be better than Obama.

  9. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Rep. Steven Horsford of NV, a Democrat, is taking his five minutes not to question the witness, but to attack Darrell Issa. Keeping it classy, Dems.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I would call him a jackass but I like jackasses. He’s just a buffoon. Expect this kind of behavior on the select committee – that’s why Pelosi is sending her troops to participate – to turn it into a 3 Ring Circus.

  10. Katherine B Says:

I was watching the Kelly File last night and the topic was the roaring success of ISIS in taking territory in Iraq. Kelly read a quote from Obama from a couple of months ago regarding ISIS. Using a basketball analogy, Obama said ISIS was “JV” and just because you put on a jersey that doesn’t make you Kobe Bryant.” I could just hear the arrogance in his voice. Apparently, he seems to have grossly underestimated ISIS.

Now, as the Democrats are so fond of bringing up Bush, imagine if this happened under Bush and if he had said something so arrogant and so WRONG. We’d be seeing clips of that statement over and over again on the air to make a fool of him. But because it was Obama who foolishly wrote these extremists off, we hear nothing.

Perhaps the worst thing that has happened in the era of Obama is the complete corruption of our news media.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, wow, Katherine – that is telling indeed, isn’t it?? And absolutely spot on that had Bush, either one of them, said something like that, it would be on a 24/7 news cycle. Obama? Meh…

Excellent point abt the corruption of the media. And it certainly is now…

  11. foxyladi14 Says:

But the Mighty O wanted this job so bad to lie cheat and steal to get it!!! 😯

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

That is the thing that always gets to me, Foxy – Obama and his minions lied, cheated, and stole the nomination, and the election, and now he acts like it is just too much effort. Ugh.

  12. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Once again, there is a Dem who is asking REAL questions, and is calling what the IRS did “misconduct,” which it did. That is Rep. Lynch from NY. He said the IRS violated people’s right to assembly, and right to free speech. No kidding.

So, yeah – I have to acknowledge that he, along with Tammy Duckworth last night, actually asked real questions, though Lynch also did the obligatory chastising, and brought up “conspiracy theories,” but still, he has been pretty good on this issue.

It’s a sad commentary that there are so few…

  13. justine Says:

What is really disappointing to me is how so many fight for the party, forgetting what’s happening to the country. I am neither Rep or Dem, but I would hope that even a few Democrats would stand up and say, “This is so wrong; this must stop.” But, evidently their loyalty to their party trumps loyalty to their country.

    It’s very discouraging.
    .

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Right there with you, Justine. I am neither one, either, and I am very frustrated seeing how my former party is acting (which is why it is my former party). It is precisely because of the “Party before Country” mindset that Obama is able to act in such a lawless manner. And as long as they spend precious moments when they could be seeking answers to apologize, accuse, and attack the other side for wanting to look into a very AMERICAN problem, we will be hard pressed to right this ship…

  14. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Katherine, since you mentioned Megyn Kelly, I have to share this great clip of Kelly summing up in a little over a minute the host of issues with the Obama presidency. It was incredibly well done. Bear in mind that this was the other day:

  15. foxyladi14 Says:

The bear is loose!!! And no one cares. πŸ˜†
