“America Is…” Weekend Open Thread

by

Recently, I saw the movie, “America,” choosing to catch it in the movie theater while I had to wait four hours for one of my dogs to have her spa day (wash and shave). I recommend it for a host of reasons, not the least of which is the elucidating points made about Howard Zinn and Saul Alinksy. There was much more than that, of course, and if you can see it, I think you might enjoy it.

I should add, I did not see D’Souza’s “2016.” Why? I could not bear to hear Obama speak that much. Seriously. I might try it on dvd so I can just fast-forward through those parts. After seeing “America,” I am more inclined to see that one.

There was a part of it that I want to share with you here, though. It is not the words of Dinesh D’Souza, but of Bono, yes that Bono, from U2. This is from a speech he gave back in November, 2012 at Georgetown University:

I admit, this moved me to tears. One of the points made very well in the movie is that America is not the bad place people like Zinn, Occupiers, and Alinskyites try to paint us as being. So to hear Bono make this observation about us, about for what we stand, about the very concept of our country, and to do so beautifully, moves me to tears…

There is much going on right now; from ISIS taking over more towns in Iraq (Christian and Kurd), though Obama has authorized food/humanitarian drops, as well as air strikes against ISIS (the Kurds have been begging for help); continued anti-Semitism rearing its exceedingly ugly head across the globe; the threat from Obama that he won’t just sit idly by waiting for the Congress to do its job; and, of course, the Democrats’ ratcheting up the claim that Impeachment is ever-so-near by Republicans (not that it SHOULDN’T be with the unlawful behavior of Obama – even Judge Napolitano thinks Obama should be impeached if he grants amnesty). It is hard to keep up with all that is going on right now, and I know there is much I have left out of the list above. So feel free to talk about any or all of the above, or something of your choosing.

And on a TOTALLY different note, something else that “moves” me besides the Bono video is US Airways. Yes, by the time most of you read this, I will either be winging my way to Grand Cayman for two weeks, or already there. I am SO excited about this trip, even more so than usual. Why? Well, the first 8 days, our 10 year old grandnephew will be with us. Coming in on the 6th day we are there, and staying for 6 days, will be our 22 year old (VMI Cadet) godson. He is really family, too, since his mother is my oldest friend in the world, as well as a former sister-in-law, and always family to me. So psyched to be able to spend time with them, and to take a break from all of the craziness going on in the world.

I am also psyched because long-time reader/commenter, Katherine B., has graciously accepted my request to write a post on her experiences in Israel. That post will be up on Monday.

Until then, here is another photo of Grand Cayman. This is at the National Park:

Ahhhh…

I want to leave you with this rousing, ovation-receiving statement by none other than our beloved Rep. Trey Gowdy (h/t Facebook friend):

Oh, how I wish we had 400 more like him (loved the point he made about not standing and clapping for ANY president who comes into Congress and tells them he is going to make their vote, their work, meaningless). And this is where America isn’t just an idea, it is also a nation of laws, and those laws must be followed ESPECIALLY by the President of the United States…

Okay, friends – I hope you have a good weekend. Stay tuned for Katherine’s post. I might get another one up next weekend, but no promises! Take care, everyone!

If there were more Representatives, and Senators, like Trey Gowdy then the “congress” would not be held in such low esteem IMHO.

If voters cared more about electing people who would do what is right instead of being from the “right” party we would have better House and Senate not to mention POTUS.

If the people saw that those they elected failed in their duty to obey the Constitution and support the people and the country instead of their damn party turned those failures out instead of re-electing them we would have a better, safer, freer country.

Those things are kind of a “bucket list” of things I would like to see before I kick off. I wish I believed it would happen. I really, really wish I did so that I could sleep sounder and at night knowing my grandchildren and great grandchildren would have the same rights and freedoms that I experienced when I was growing up.

Right now far too many citizens are giving away their rights and freedoms for food stamps welfare checks. Women who used to yell “I am woman hear me roar” are whining about someone else not paying for their birth control.

At times my despair is almost more than I can stand. Then I hear someone like Trey Gowdy and I find a little tiny bit of hope. If mighty oaks from little acorns grow perhaps he is the start of something. I don’t believe he can shame most of the members of the house – you can’t shame people without shame – but there must be some who still remember that integrity and honesty are good things. Even for a politician.

    Okay, rant over.

Marge, you can rant on any time. That was absolutely spot on (and greetings from east End, Grand a Cayman!).

And I know exactly what you mean. When 3/4 of Americans no longer believe their kids are going to be better off than they were, that is beyond problematic. It is just sad. That is NOT the America we know. Your grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, deserve that, and it is up to us to make sure that happens.

You are so right abt Congress, too. I doubt Gowdy can shame him, but thank heavens we have someone like him to speak for us. Yes, from an acorn a mighty oak grows – let’s hope that is what we are witnessing…

    Instead we got this. 👿

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Oh those pesky facts! Too bad so many will never know them and if they see them won’t believe them. Willful blindness and stupidity are an epidemic in this country. Well except for me and thee Foxy and all who come here to the Rev’s Place. 😉

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

That poster summed it up so well. “Pesky facts,” indeed. I fear Marge is right, though (and thanks for the compliment. I am so grateful for y’all here!). Too many are unwilling to allow facts to influence their opinions. Obama tells them that the economy is great, and they believe him instead of their wallets. It is astonishing to see the depth of ideological blindness, isn’t it?

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I like to think that I don’t allow my “ideology” override my intellect.

If I was even sure what my “ideology” is any more. Honesty and integrity isn’t an “ideology” – it’s either a part of you or it isn’t. I hope it’s a part of me most of the time. Otherwise one of these days I’m gonna be doing some heavy splainin to my maker.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I hear you, Marge, and I would like to think so, too. But I must admit, when I was still a leftie Dem, I know I allowed that ideology to blind me, and believed so much of what they spouted. Actually, when Kerry, Reid, Nd Pelosi came along was when I started seeing something was wrong. Then there was 2008, and that below those blinders right off.

But yes, at this point, I sure hope I am beyond that. And you are right that being a decent human being isn’t abt ideology. It is like what Bono said: “It isn’t a right/left issue. It is a right/wrong issue.” Or words to that effect. That is exactly it, but we seem to have gotten away from that, which is truly destroying the fabric or our society, IMHO…

          • kenoshamarge Says:

What Bono said should be branded on the brain of every thinking human being: blockquote>“It isn’t a right/left issue. It is a right/wrong issue.”
Thinking being the part that matters.

Too many people vote by what some nasty ad said, some talking point spouting pol blathered and by the letter after the name of the candidate. I too must confess that back in the bad old days when I was a Democrat that is exactly what I did. Shame on me! I think, I believe, that had the internet been around in my younger days my eyes would have been opened sooner. I hope so anyway.

I live in the SE corner of Wisconsin which is union/Democrat central. I was indoctrinated from the time I was old enough to vote until 2008 to be and vote as a Democrat. I even voted for that POS Jim Doyle who damn near bankrupted our state.

Whatever “might have beens” the fact is that I am now a proud and loud Independent. I dislike the Dems more only because it seems to me, at this point in time, that they are a lot worse than the GOP. I can’t think of any Democrat for whom I have any respect. I do not respect most Republicans much either. Just a tad more than the Dems.

In the case of Trey Gowdy, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Jeff Sessions, Tom Coburn, Nikki Haley, Susana Martinez and a few others I have a lot of respect. That is not to say that I always agree but always agreeing would me I don’t use my own brain.

It is telling that I cannot think of a single Dem that I respect. They have remained silent while a lawless president , representing their party ran amok. For that they should NEVER be forgiven. If you don’t denounce it you are a part of it.

Oops here I go blathering on again. Sorry.

  3. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Absolutely no need to apologize, Marge – I love reading your comments! Again, spot on. I swear, we have had a very similar awakening. Good point, too, abt the internet. We may very well have learned earlier on what BS the Dems were spewing. I swear, though, they have gotten SO much worse, so much more manipulative, divisive, and just flat out deceptive. Perhaps they were always this bad and I didn’t want to see it, but I think there were more Dems back in the day who were people of integrity and honor. Trying to find some now is, as you noted, a difficult task.

And yes – those whom you listed I respect as well, even if I don’t agree with everything they say. When you have someone like Nikki Haley who flat out stands up to the president, an act which led, I think, to the Federal Government targeting us not once, but twice, and who has also done great things for the state, you gotta respect her.

There may be some Dems out there who still act from a sense of honor and integrity, but they seem to be in a very small minority with the Pelosis, Reids, and Wasserman-Schultzes of the world controlling the party I once loved.

Yep – right there with you as a fierce Independent.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Ruh Roh! That is saying something, isn’t it? Is it possible that even she is getting sick of trying to cover up his BS?

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Call me cynical but I think some members of the MSM are beginning to see that by being human shields for POTUS they are damaging themselves. It’s not that they have integrity or actually want to act as real reporters – it’s self-preservation. Sorry Andrea, just like Obama’s reputation, yours is past fixing by a little honesty. We know you have the soul of a liar.

Today we celebrated my mom’s American citizenship. Sixty years later, she is so proud to have accomplished so much. It would never have been possible in her origin country. She did everything the legal way. It took long, but it was well worth it. How so many forget or have no idea what it takes.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

What you have to work for, you value. What is handed to you, not so much. Congratulations to your mother and to you for having someone who showed you the right way.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

That is wonderful. What a fantastic anniversary to celebrate! Congratulations to your mom and your family, mcnorman.

And Marge, you hit the nail on the head…

      • mcnorman Says:

I remember being the only kid in school that didn’t know English. My mom didn’t speak much at home. She knew that I would have trouble if she didn’t so she immediately enrolled in an English class. Within a few months, we were on our way to becoming English proficient. It’s been an incredible road.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Wow, mcnorman, what a great role model your mom is!

And that must have been quite an experience when you first went to school. It reminds me of the comedian, Elvira Kurt. Her parents were Eastern European immigrants to Canada. She didn’t know any English either went she went to school in first grade. Anyway, good on you all for your accomplishments!
