Never Mind The “Optics,” How About The HUMANITY? *Open Thread*

by

In a recent post, I featured a Daily News front page highlighting Obama’s return to golf within sheer minutes of Obama denouncing ISIS for beheading American journalist, James Foley. As a reminder, here is the cover:

NY Daily News Slams 'Bam (Source: New York Daily News)

Well, Obama has finally admitted that the “optics” of that immediate golf trip might not have been the best thing to do. From the Telegraph U.K.:

It was a decision that attracted a firestorm of criticism, but President Barack Obama has admitted that going to play golf just minutes after delivering a statement about the beheading of a US journalist two weeks ago did not look good.

“There’s no doubt that – after having talked to the families, where it was hard for me to hold back tears listening to the pain that they were going through – after the statement that I made, that you know, I should’ve anticipated the optics,” he said.

The ‘optics’, which included front page pictures of Mr Obama smiling and relaxing in a golf buggy at a course on Martha’s Vineyard where he was on holiday, were met with a barrage of unfavourable news headlines and scornful commentary from both Republicans and Democrats. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Yeah, no, the “optics” weren’t good, an opinion that seemed shared across the board.

But do you know what I find to be worse, much worse, actually? A few thing: 1. that within minutes, Obama was back on the golf course yukking it up with his pals; 2. that he thought of returning to the golf course at ALL after an act of such astonishing barbarism; and 3. that he is more concerned with the OPTICS than with the lack of sheer humanity this kind of thing indicates.

Seriously – WHO among us would even THINK of going back and hitting the links after having to announce to the nation that a barbaric Islamist terrorist group has just viciously beheaded – ON VIDEO – a US citizen, a journalist, as well as issues a threat against our country?? I would wager: none of us. The Foley family was grieving, no doubt in shock over what happened to their son, such a public, humiliating, disgusting, and obscene murder on video. The President of the United States comes out, speaks for a few minutes, then runs right back out to play. It makes his claim that he was all choked up talking to the family ring a bit hollow. The many photos of him that followed did not in any way depict a man overcome with grief at the vicious beheading of one of the citizens he was supposed to protect. Not even close.

THAT is what I find to be most problematic. Not only did he not look like he was trying to “hold back the tears,” it looked like someone who did the very least he could get away with doing before ditching the “leader thing.” But even more, that it did not seem to register on a HUMAN level, on a compassionate level, is incredibly disconcerting. Like I said, I cannot imagine a one of us going out and laughing it up with our buddies right after making that announcement. It was disrespectful as hell to the Foley family, and to us all as Americans. It demonstrated a callousness, a heartlessness, that is just shocking to me.

But then there is the concern from Obama about the “OPTICS” of what he did. Yeah, it did not just LOOK bad, but it also WAS bad.

That isn’t the only disconcerting comment Obama made this weekend. Once again, he is trying to convince us that we we heard him say, and what we have videographic evidence of him saying, isn’t what he said. From BizPacReview:

[…] Early in the sitdown with NBC’s Chuck Todd, Obama tried to clarify a Todd question about the Islamic State by pretending one of his most famous quotes from a January interview with the New Yorker magazine had been misinterpreted for the past eight months.

obamameetthepress0908He never called the Islamic State “the jayvee squad,” he said.

“Keep in mind I wasn’t specifically referring to (Islamic State),” Obama told Todd, fingering a gradually growing nose.

“I’ve said that, regionally, there were a whole series of organizations that were focused primarily locally, weren’t focused on homeland, because I think a lot of us, when we think about terrorism, the model is Osama bin Laden and 9/11.”

The Tampa Bay Times fact-checking column PolitiFact found that not to be, in fact, true. Exactly the opposite, in fact.

“The statement is false,” the column found. […]

Wow, he really does think we are idiots. Sadly, too many people in this country are willing to oblige him by believing whatever he says no matter how contradictory or flat out false it is.

But hey, don’t take my word for it. Below is a clip that highlights Obama’s statement on the whole “jv” claim with Andrea Mitchell and US Senator Dianne Feinstein:

Senator Feinstein did not mince any words whatsoever about the dangers of ISIS, and that is was WRONG for Obama to make that “jv” comparison.

And below is the interview with Chuck Todd in which Obama lied through his teeth about referring to ISIS/ISIL as a JV team. BizPacReview notes that the salient quote begins around 6:15 in the video below:

Uh huh. That is the WORM: What Obama Really Meant. This is a longstanding pattern for Barack Obama. I wrote a post about it way back in July, 2008. That is his MO, and as I noted, far too may people are willing to buy what he sells even when there is evidence to the contrary. But there is no doubt about this: he lied.

Oh the humanity of it all…

What do you think about all of this? Feel free to discuss any of the above, or whatever else is on your minds.

Like you the thing that bothered me the most about Obama’s words was the word “optics”. Optics? How how decency and honor and, oh year, how about appropriate? That he chose that word tells you a lot about the kind of a man he is. All about image and no depth.

How amazing is it that the media reports it as if there is nothing wrong with it? Says a lot about them too.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It does say a lot abt the media that they think discussing how something LOOKS is more important than what someone DOES. You used the right word – it is abt DECENCY, and this president seems to be in short supply of that…

Obama is a heartless self-absorbed creature who thinks the world of himself. I think you nailed it when you said it wasn’t just the optics. Message to Obama: It not only looked bad, sweetie, it was bad.

I didn’t – couldn’t- watch the Chuck Todd interview because I can’t stand either of them

What I did watch over the weekend was a riveting interview by Bret Baier of FOX News with three American security contractors who told their story of what happened in Benghazi. The special was called 19 Hours and if you can see it, it will amaze you. These are three men who are former Green Berets or Army Rangers. They are plain spoken and well-spoken people who contrast so startlingly with all the phony politicians and other talking heads on TV.

    • Katherine B Says:

Correction – the FOX Special was 13 Hours in Benghazi, not 19 hours.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I’ve watched it 3 times now and hear something new each time. That Tanto, Tig and Oz have to sit and all but be called liars by a bubblehead like Maria Harf at State outrages me no end.

They handled the question of politics better that I would have, could have, Tanto simply said, “we were there”. What more needs to be said?

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I hear you, Katherine – I am not a big fan of Chuck Todd – he has shown his true colors a number of times in terms of being an Obama sycophant, Ugh. But it seemed he did actually press Obama a bit in this one interview. About damn time, that’s for sure.

Yes, the “13 Hours” special was very powerful, indeed. This weekend, I mentioned the response of Marie Harf, State Department Deputy Spokeswoman and her offensive remarks essentially calling the 3 brave heroes liars from the comfort of her podium. Same for those Congresspeople who determined, from their comfy DC offices, that there was no “stand down” order. WOW.

Rep. Gowdy made a comment abt this special, too, in terms of the upcoming hearing (h/t Robin):“The Committee has heard of these concerns and they go to the heart of why Congress established this Committee—to determine all of the facts of what happened in Benghazi before, during and after the terrorist attack that day. We welcome the opportunity, and expect, to talk to personnel who were on the ground in Benghazi, their superiors, and anyone with relevant information related to the Benghazi terrorist attack. There are still facts to learn about Benghazi and information that needs to be explained in greater detail to the American people. And this Committee will do just that.” http://benghazi.house.gov/news/press-releases/gowdy-statement-on-reports-from-benghazi-security-personnel

Btw, Marge had some great comments abt the “13 Hours” special – Marge, would you mind sharing again what you said abt Lou?

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Lou, who is not a political junkie like I am, although he never fails to vote, was listening to “13 Hours At Benghazi” as I re-watched it Saturday night. He turned off the computer and his beloved games and came and watched the rest of it with me. When it was over he simply said, who would ever take any lying POS politican or politician’s spokesperson over these 3 men?

Lou and I both laughed, at the look of horror on Brett Baier’s face when Oz was talking about flopping his hand around and said, “hey check this out”.

We know who we trust and who we believe and it sure isn’t Marie Harf or anyone else in the Obama Administration.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks so much, Marge – if I recall correctly, Katherine doesn’t have access to the internet over the weekends. I thought this was a great comment…

          • kenoshamarge Says:

No problem. Fun to get Lou involved because quite frankly he thought I was a bit of a nut about Benghazi. Thank is no longer true. I suspect that may be true for a lot of people. Put human faces and voices like Tig, Tanto and Oz on an issue and people can understand and relate. Eapecially people like Lou, and me, who respect and admire men who give so much and are still willing to give more.

It’s all about him, all of the time, isn’t it? Even now, it’s his concern about how the “optics” may have made him look bad that matters, not anybody else’s suffering. Bad optics also implies that he didn’t do anything wrong, it was just portrayed wrong.

To make him even more FOS, I bet he’s seen that clip of President Bush dozens of times, the one where he says, “now watch my swing.” Bush was heavily criticized for playing golf during war time, so he actually stopped playing golf. It wasn’t about him, it was about the American people perceiving their CIC as having no compassion. So Obama has had access to that video, that incident, and he knows perfectly well what the optics are going to be. He flat out doesn’t care.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Great comment, insanity. Yes, it IS all abt him, no doubt abt it.

And you said it that he acts like this wasn’t just plain wrong. They were just discussing that on “Outnumbered,” how he did not apologize for what he did what, 8 minutes?, after discussing the gruesome beheading of Foley, he was out joking around and fist-bumping with his BFFs. They also noted that he essentially blamed the MEDIA for reporting it and making him look bad. Yeah – because THAT was the problem – the reporting of it, not the action of it.

      Ugh.

Good point abt Bush’s video. Oh my gosh, all the crap Bush took – and I admit – I was piling on, too, now seems so mild by comparison.

Excellent post, dear Cuzin! I agree with all you’ve said, and couldn’t have said it better.

Chuck Todd, though still a bloody liberal, actually asked tougher questions than I thought would do—You could tell he was extremely nervous, esp. when he got a little “testy” (“testy” for a liberal member of the media, that is). I’m sure he’s received death threats by now. That’s the way the Dems express “have a nice day”..

Don’t ya love the way Barack kept harping on how those mean ol’ Repubs. have fought his administration legislatively every step of the way?….Hey, President Dumbo, what about the hundreds of bills the Repubs in the House have sent to the Dem. Senate?? They’ve all been ignored!!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

      Thanks, Cuz! I appreciate that!

Yes, I noticed Todd was getting a little frustrated with the president’s
responses, and his dissembling on so many topics. But Obama knows all he has to do is blame the big, bad Reps, and the Dems will carry his water on that meme.

For instance, I saw a discussion between Katie Pavlitch and Mary Anne can’t remember her last name. Mary Anne was going on abt the mean Reps and how Obama couldn’t get ANYTHING done on Immigration because of them. Katie reminded her that the Dems controlled all 3 houses for 2 years and did NOTHING. Mary Anne’s response was to look all smug, shake her head, and basically repeat herself. WOW.

But this blaming the MEDIA is just laughable. Obama is biting the hand that feeds him, or at least covers up all of his scandals…

The media all but ignoring Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi and his plight is disgusting. Time for some more vets to step up to the plate and give this “brother” some support!

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yes, they are – all except Fox. Right this minute, they are talking abt him and how he has a hearing this morning. Hopefully, this will be the END of his imprisonment…

key republicans push to keep libyans from training in the US

it is a sad day for this country when congress has to fight a president to try and keep the country safe

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Are they OUT OF THEIR MINDS????? Who in the HELL thought it would be a good idea to train these Libyans HOW TO FLY A PLANE????

      Good. GOD.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

The same ones who call those of us who do not think it a good idea Islamaphobic. They forgot the lessons of 9/11 2001 – which means it can, and problably will happen again.
