What’s In A Word? Plenty! *Open Thread* *UPDATED*

by

Update at the end of the post.

The responses to Obama’s Prime Time speech the other night continue, particularly because of two distinctions Obama tried to make. One was that the terrorist organization that refers to itself as Islamist isn’t, and the other was that the Islamist terrorist group that calls itself a state isn’t.

Wow. Both are demonstrably false conjectures on the part of Obama, but the Islamist one is huge. Phyllis Chesler took Obama on for the way he defined these words:

[…] He lost me when he referred to ISIS as ISIL, thus undercutting their view of themselves as a routinely Islamist imperialist venture which views not only Iraq and Syria as part of their future “Caliphate,” but one which includes Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and the disputed Palestinian territories—and perhaps Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Emirates–as theirs to command.

He lost me when he said—he actually said—that “ISIL is not Islamic. No religion condones the killing of innocents and the vast majority of ISIL’s victims have been Muslims.”

ISIS is most definitely “Islamic” as is the far-from-defeated Al-Qaeda, Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood, Al-Shabab, Hezbollah, and the Pakistani and Afghan Talibans, to name only a few such terrorist groups—all non-state actors, most funded by states.

Does President Obama really believe that America must still curry favor with “the Islamic world” by saying that ISIS is not “Islamic?” Does the man not know that, on his watch, America has lost the trust of every Arab and Muslim country? […] (Click here to read the rest.)

No kidding. I simply do not understand why Obama and his Administration continue to kowtow to “the Islamic world.” To do so ESPECIALLY on the eve of 9/11 makes his comments even more offensive and telling.

And while Obama is SOOOO certain that ISIS is not “Islamist” or a “state,” the CIA is telling us that the ISIS membership has bloomed to tens of thousands of Islamist terrorists. From The Hill:

The CIA estimates the Islamic States in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is made up of anywhere between 20,000 to 31,500 fighters, according to reports Thursday night.

[…]

Among them are hundreds of foreign fighters, including around a dozen known U.S. fighters.
The militant group’s success on the battlefield and its leaders assertion that it has established a caliphate led to the surge in recruitment, the CIA official said.

The group has taken over broad swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria this year and received universal condemnation in Washington after beheading two U.S. journalist. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Yes, and they will continue to take over “broad swaths of territory” since Obama’s strategy to deal with them is a bit tepid, and he is having a hard time actually getting a coalition together. Charles Krauthammer had something to say about this whole “coalition” building exercise of Obama’s. From WaPo: […] Not to worry, says the president. We’ll have lots of other help — “a broad coalition to roll back this terrorist threat.” He then proceeded to name not a single member of this stout assembly or offer even an approximate number.

Democrats have a habit of accusing George W. Bush of going it alone in Iraq. According to the Center of Military History of the U.S. Army, Bush had 37 nations with us. They sent more than 25,000 troops. So far, Obama has a coalition of nine: eight NATO members plus Australia. How many of those — or of the much touted Arab coalition behind us — do you think will contribute any troops at all?

Why, this grand coalition does not even include many congressional Democrats. That’s why Obama hasn’t asked for Congress’s authorization. Democrats are ambivalent about this endeavor. With an election coming up, they are terrified of casting a vote supporting it. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Hmm. Maybe that is because this strategy toward the non-Islamist Islamist not-a-state State is, apparently, NOT A WAR, according to Sec. Kerry. From CNN:

[…] “What we are doing is engaging in a very significant counterterrorism operation,” Kerry told CNN’s Elise Labott in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. “It’s going to go on for some period of time. If somebody wants to think about it as being a war with ISIL, they can do so, but the fact is it’s a major counterterrorism operation that will have many different moving parts.”

Kerry made a distinction between ISIS and terror groups operating in Somalia and Yemen.

“ISIL is an animal unto itself,” he said. “And it is significantly such a threat because of the foreign fighters that are attracted to it — which you don’t see in Somalia or … Yemen.” Most importantly, Kerry said, ISIL has attracted a “significant coalition” that is determined to go and destroy it. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Why, yes ISIS is, and yes ISIS does. That is another point Charles Krauthammer made in his good piece, that we cannot treat this like Somalia and Yemen, yet that is precisely what Obama wants to do. To use a baseball metaphor, that’s like treating a Major League baseball club like a Little league team. They are not just nowhere CLOSE to being in the same league.

Back to Kerry’s point, though, that we are not “at war” with these Major League terrorists. It begs the question, WHY NOT?!?! And it denies what the rest of us seem to understand as voiced by Gov. Palin in the video below:

Indeed. We might be unwilling to acknowledge that we are at war with ISIS, but ISIS is most DEFINITELY at war with us. The beheadings, if nothing else, were a pretty clear indication there, don’t you think??

So here we are, thirteen years after 9/11, and two years after Benghazi. We have a President and a Secretary of State who cannot use the term, “Islamist terrorist,” or to acknowledge that we are at WAR with a major ISLAMIST terrorist group. WOW.

I don’t know about you, but that scares the bejeezus out of me.

This is an Open Thread.

UPDATE: OHMYGOSH – someone at the White House FINALLY figured out that we are actually at war, despite all the protestations to the contrary. I’ll be darned! From The Hill:

The United States is at war with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS or ISIL), the White House and Pentagon said Friday, a day after Secretary of State John Kerry repeatedly declined to use that phrase.

“In the same way that we are at war with Al Qaeda and its affiliates around the globe, we are at war with ISIL,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters at the White House.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby echoed that sentiment, telling reporters that while the effort was “not the Iraq war,” they should “make no mistake, we know we are at war with ISIL.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Dang, they better go tell Sec. Kerry and Susan Rice, because they are totally unclear on this concept. Oh, wait – and WH Spokesweasel Josh Earnest, too. Yep, just YESTERDAY, Earnest said we were not.

Dang, y’all – I gotta go take some Dramamine. They are making me dizzy with these rapid fire changes in direction. How about you?

thank you for posting the picture of the weeping eagle. for some reason that picture just spoke to me.

backtrack and his minions use words to indoctrinate not educate. They also are really afraid to declare WAR due to political reasons but also to the muslim world , backtrack is a muslim because of his father. He knows that and really does not want to rock the boat. After all someday he may have to go live in Kenya

My pleasure, Helen – consider it my gift to you on this special day! 🙂

Well said abt how Obama uses his words. So much of them are to placate and lull his base. He and his Admin. frequently use the exact opposite of a word to describe what it is, hoping they can slide on by. Thank heavens there is the fact-based community out here who know differently…

Here’s someone that doesn’t seem to agree with Obama’s idea of what is and what isn’t “Islam”.

Human Rights Attorney: ‘President Is Not An Authority On Religion’

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I just happened to catch that last night and thought she was SPOT ON. Obama is not a theologian, heck, I am not even convinced he’s much of a Constitutional Law professor (especially since he got more bad evaluations than good, and had his students basically come up with his platforms for him). So, yeah – this is NOT his purview, and is what those of us who studied Logic call, “An appeal to authority,” and it is a fallacy. Just because he may know something abt one area does NOT make him an authority on another, in this case, what does and what does not constitution Islamic.

If a terrorist group has “Islamist” in their very name, I think it is because they want it there and identify as such.

And along those lines, LOVE the Greg quote – he cracked me up when he said that the other day.

The cartoon is SPOT ON!!! Great find!

  3. kenoshamarge Says:

I think ISIS is a bit surprised to find they aren’t “Islamic” too. As Greg Gutfeld said, “what does the I stand for, Igloo?”

who knew I taught my grandson and great grandsons to be racist. I just thought they would like stuff about the railroad

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Uh oh. And to think my biracial grandnephew LOVED Thomas the Tank when he was young. Who knew he was being racist?!?!

These people are just nuts. I am soooo sick of the PC Police (and I love this series the DC is doing on their Alphabet of Racist Terms)…

Great post! You said it in a nutshell: “So here we are, thirteen years after 9/11, and two years after Benghazi. We have a President and a Secretary of State who cannot use the term, ‘Islamist terrorist,’ or to acknowledge that we are at WAR with a major ISLAMIST terrorist group. WOW.”

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks so much, lyn! I appreciate it! 🙂

In a country where the Fort Hood killings were called “Workplace Violence” anything is possible.

I love words and I loathe those who abuse them and distort them. That includes most of the media. They live by words and yet so few of them can use words, the tools of their trade, with any competence.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

So true, Marge. I’m with you – words should mean something and those who use them cavalierly or in a manner intended to distort or distract frustrate me in a big way.

Great point abt the media, too!

  6. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh how I wish I had seen this Jonah Goldberg piece earlier today! He is so funny, and so on target (h/t Facebook friend):The president’s first assertion is trickier. Is the Islamic State “not Islamic”? Moreover, is it really “clear” that it’s not Islamic?

Not even a little? Is it Islamic-ish?

If we’re talking clarity, I’d say the Islamic State is clearly not Mormon. Or Lutheran. Or Buddhist. It most certainly is not the most extreme example of Quakers gone bad ever recorded.

As for its not being Islamic, that’s at best unclear, if not just clearly wrong. And the fact that the majority of its victims are Muslim is irrelevant. Lenin and Stalin killed thousands of Communists and socialists; that doesn’t mean Lenin and Stalin weren’t Communists and socialists. If such terrorists who kill Muslims aren’t Muslims, why do we give them Korans when we imprison them?

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

And this from the Goldberg article is a GREAT point: In fact, maybe it’s a mistake to concede the point up front? Instead of Americans trying to persuade Muslims of the world that terrorism is un-Islamic, why shouldn’t Muslims be working harder to convince us?

Think about it. Whenever a tiny minority of bad actors hurts the reputation of its ethnicity, faith, or cause by doing terrible things in the name of its ethnicity, faith, or cause, the responsible thing is for the moderate, decent majority to cry “Not in our name!” or “They don’t speak for us!”

    Quote of the day:

If the mainstream media were a person, it would have to be classified as a sociopath.

It constantly and uninhibitedly lies, to the point of being pathological about it.

It never admits it has lied, or even acknowledges its “errors.”

It distracts its audience from those lies by glibly changing the topic and directing their attention elsewhere.

No matter how many times it’s lied before, it expects us to believe its new lies.

And it is utterly without shame in the way it does all these things.

  8. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, and now Susan Rice has weighed in on how this is a counterterrorism operation, not a war: http://hotair.com/archives/2014/09/12/susan-rice-on-isis-theres-a-difference-between-a-war-and-a-counterterrorism-operation-you-know/

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Yeah cause Susan Rice – the video queen – is a credible source of information. Her lies about Benghazi should have eliminated her from the public scene for life. Just the sight of her face enrages me all over again.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

You ain’t only kidding, sister. How in the HELL this woman was PROMOTED after this (I mean, I understand why – she took the hit for Obama and Clinton) says everything abt how this corrupt Administration operates…

        • kenoshamarge Says:

She could be relied upon to go on 5 different television shows and lie her ass off. And if she took a hit it sure didn’t stop her promotion or her place on the national scene. I would be willing to bet that most Democrats don’t even know she lied. It’s hard to hear the truth with fingers in both ears while singing la, la, and la!

          • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, I have no doubt they don’t know she lied. I bet most people in the country, unless they are watching a certain cable news channel or getting their news online from certain sources, don’t know….
