HOW Do These People Keep Their Jobs?? *Open Thread*

by

That is the question of the day regarding a number of high profile issues facing this Administration and the Country. There are two (formerly three, but now Holder has resigned) just in the past week that are glaring examples of people who should lose their jobs. Okay, there are LOTS of people in this Administration who should lose their jobs, including Obama himself, but for now, and for the sake of some semblance of brevity, two are enough.

And those two would be: Director of Intelligence James Clapper, whom Obama blamed for a massive intelligence failure, and Secret Service Director Julia Pierson.

Don’t get me wrong – I think Obama dumping on Clapper in his “60 Minutes” interview as a way to shift blame away from himself over the ISIS crisis was incredibly inappropriate. Obama is the president, and as so is the “Decider” about what to do with intelligence given him (when he deigns to attend the briefings). That this information had been out for over a year points to a failure on Obama’s part ultimately.

But that isn’t the first time Clapper has been singled out. I mentioned in a post back in November of 2012 ago about Clapper essentially lying under oath about an issue related to Benghazi (well, he said what he said was “wrong” – same difference), but even THAT is not the only time he has made questionable statements or choices, including lying under oath to Congress about the NSA spying on us. Rep. Darrell Issa wanted him fired back then, over a year ago. But there he still sits as the Director of Intelligence for the United States of America.

How? How in the world does Clapper STILL have his job??

And then there is Secret Service Director Julia Pierson. I know I don’t have to tell you about all of the high profile glaring problems facing the Secret Service, from a man being able to vault the fence, and get deep into the White House armed with a knife, to the convicted felon security guard who was armed in an elevator with President Obama, to the failure to investigate shots fired at the White House residence. None of these are small matters, and taken together, they are HUGE failures on the part of the Secret Service. Never mind the activities of some of the Agents in Columbia or Martha’s Vineyard. Those were bad enough, but the ones mentioned above actually put the President and his family at risk. That is unacceptable.

And that is why Secret Service Director Pierson was front and center at a House hearing on Tuesday. I want to share some highlights in question from a few of our favorite US Representatives, beginning with Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) questioning Director Pierson in his inimitable, heart-of-the-matter style:

As always, Gowdy asks great questions. He didn’t get a lot of great ANSWERS, though.(And you can read more this interaction at BizPacReview.)

And then there is Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) and his statement on the Secret Service, beginning with his concurring with Rep. Cummings that this is NOT a Republican or Democratic issue, but an American issue, and it is. To Rep. Chaffetz’s statement which is a great overview of the many failures over the past few years by the Secret Service:

“Tremendous restraint is not what we are looking for!” That comment was made in response to the Secret Service’s statement on how the agents reacted in terms of a fence jumper. No kidding that “restraint” is not the objective when someone has jumped the fence and is heading for the White House. Yep, “restraint” is not the most important action, but stopping the intruder before he or she can get into the White House.

And yet, this woman still has her job. Why? Because she is the first woman in this position? That should NOT be a justification for someone to keep a position, especially one who has had so many major violations happen under her watch. But she is still the Director, and it just begs the question why that is so.

Heck, even Rep. Elijah Cummings (D=MD) is saying this morning that he didn’t sleep last night thinking about the hearing, and that Director Pierson should lose her job. From Newsmax:

[…] The culture at the Secret Service had created problems in protocol, training, and morale, Cummings explained, adding that it was a “major problem” when Secret Service agents weren’t comfortable bringing their problems to their supervisors.

“You have Secret Service agents who are more comfortable becoming whistleblowers and telling Congress the problems with the Secret Service, and revealing to Congress incidents that happened,” he said. “Whistleblowers feel more comfortable talking to the Congress than to her, her upper people.”

Cummings said the culture had led to agents “distrusting of each other,” and that Pierson was also “losing trust,” since initial reports about Gonzalez were not correct.

“Whenever you give me a report that says that somebody came into the White House, and you don’t mention a weapon in your first report. And, then you don’t even talk about the fact that he ran throughout the White House and not revealing that, I think that’s a major problem. It leads to distrust,” he said.

Due to the problems, Cummings said he no longer felt comfortable with Pierson as director of the Secret Service, though the White House on Tuesday maintained they were not going to make any changes with her position in the department.

“I have come to the conclusion that my confidence and my trust in this director, Miss Pierson, has eroded. And, I do not feel comfortable with her in that position,” Cummings said. (Click here to read the rest.)

It just begs the question: WHY?? Why is the White House NOT making any changes?

Clearly, this director is not effective. Why should Pierson, or Clapper, still hold those incredibly important positions when (Obama’s scapegoating of Clapper aside), they have demonstrated major failures? This would never happen in the private sector, and it sure as hell should not happen in the public sector, especially when the outcomes are so critical.

At least that’s what I think. How about you? This is an Open Thread.

Regarding Clapper, there was also an incident a while back where he was on a morning quasi news program and didn’t know about a terrorist attack in London that had just happened that morning. Later he said his staff hadn’t briefed him. Hey, guy, I knew about it just watching TV getting ready for work in the morning. I remember thinking at the time, perhaps the DNI could benefit from watching TV like the rest of us lowly citizens.

Good memory, Katherine! I think I wrote a post abt that way back then, and yes, it was just incredible that he hadn’t a CLUE when all the rest of us knew. I thought he should have been fired right then, but what do I know?

Here’s the video of Clapper being informed of the attack:

Funny how someone like Julie Pierson takes “full responsibility” for the problems yet doesn’t have the decency to then resign. If you are responsible for the problem then quit and let someone who can handle the job do it. How many times to we have to hear some fool say “I take full responsibility” and then that’s the end of it. WTH?

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

“WTH,” indeed – how can someone take full responsibility for a number of very bad incidences and still have her job? I just don’t get it…

American Thinker has an article up about the imminent attack on Baghdad by ISIS. Most of their reference points are British newspapers. I’m not seeing anything about this in the American media. Are you hearing or seeing anything? Still lots of stories about George Clooney’s wedding, though.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I heard abt that this morning, but it is telling indeed that it is the press abroad which is reporting it, and not here. You are right, though – our media does not seem to be reporting it.

Oh, yeah – I saw this morning that there were ALL these photos from the wedding of the boy who wouldn’t grow up…

  4. kenoshamarge Says:

Let’s see, which story would be the most popular amongst our citizens – an imminent attack on Baghdad or all the tittle tattle and photos of George Clooney’s wedding? My guess is that Baghdad would come in a distant, very distant second.

Could someone please tell me what the fascination with George Clooney is? I have never found him appealing or talented. He’s another in a long line of good-looking “personalities” that Hollywood produces all too often. Probably part of the reason I bother with so few movies. That an little interest in half naked, or completely naked female “personalities.” Some actually do have talent if they would only put some clothes on and ACT.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Exactly, Marge. I was talking to Katmoon yesterday abt why Clooney was such the focus on “ER” when Julianna Marguiles is such an exceptional actress, and stunning to boot. It was ALL abt Clooney, the guy who had a bit part on “Roseanne” all of a sudden became this huge sex symbol.

Wasn’t his dad or some family member a Dem. senator or something? In any event, why he is treated like he is all that, including connections to the White House, is beyond me.

Oops – Breaking News : Pierson Resigns As Secret Service Director http://townhall.com/tipsheet/danieldoherty/2014/10/01/breaking-pierson-resigns-n1899538

    As well she should!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I just saw that on the news. Ed Henry said he asked Earnest what took so long, and why was Pierson not FIRED instead of being able to resign? The security guard with the gun was the tipping point, according to Henry.

Still – good thing for her to be out. Let’s hope they choose more WISELY the next time around.

    Something to Think about:

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Outstanding – thank you. People constantly forget history when it comes to Islam and how many countries Muslims invaded. And they no doubt forget that our country dealt with this long ago. This isn’t a new thing, it is an on-going thing…

      • kenoshamarge Says:

So perhaps it is Obama, and his constant mantra about being on the wrong side of history who is actually on the wrong side of history. Of course he’s usually safe saying things like that since the people he is talking to, the Obama voters and the media, either don’t know their history or don’t care.

    • HELENK3 Says:

      stole it

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Feel free Helen, I stole it from someone else. I do think it might help, if you could get enough people to read something like that. Facts can be damn stubborn things but so can ideologues who regurgitate talking points and think themselves educated.

Thanks for the link Helen. Started my day off right knowing that two of the most despiicle people in Washington are now at each other’s throats.

And how stupid is Jarrett, or arrogant, or both, to poke a stick in the eye of a loud mouth loose cannon like Reid?

Methinks she, like her boss, is not nearly as smart as advertised. I think the time has come when she and her foolish boss are both going to wish they had forged a closed relationship with congress. Word is they are both detested – her in particular.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Sorry about the spelling. I really do know how to spell despicable – just have particularly stubborn fingers this morning.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

        Thanks, Helen!

And Marge, I think it is just the general arrogance that seems to be the hallmark of this Administration.

Speaking of Jarrett, we were none too pleased to have “The Good Wife” used as a platform for her. CBS has been on a roll propping up this Administration this week, and they are abt to lose some viewers if they keep it up. Of course, I know the brother of Ben Rhoades is the head of CBS News, but this is bordering on propaganda on OUR airwaves. That is really irritating me.

Oh, and Jarrett just creeped me out. Seriously. She was so fake and creepy, I cannot believe she is the one really running our country. Disconcerting, that.

But yeah, I would pay money to see her and Reid face off!

I am not a particular fan of Podhoretz but I do think he makes some excellent points. If you can’t trust government agencies to protect the damn White House how in the hell can you trust them against an entity like ISIS? With a media that parrots Administration talking points as if they were fact how are people supposed to understand what the hell is going on?
