Election Coming? Delay, Delay, Delay *Open Thread*

And no, I don’t mean Tom DeLay, but speaking of DeLay, have you heard that he has been cleared of charges? Yep, a friend from Texas mentioned this recently. From Chron.com:

Texas’ highest criminal appellate court on Wednesday refused to reinstate charges against former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, clearing him of wrongdoing in a now nearly decade old money laundering and conspiracy case.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals handed down the 8-1 ruling Wednesday. In it, the majority agreed with an earlier ruling from the 3rd Court of Appeals throwing out DeLay’s conviction for money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering by illegally funneling corporate money to state candidates. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Now, I didn’t really care for DeLay back in the day, but I also was a yellow dog Dem then, so there ya have it.

The “delay” I mean is along the same lines as my post from yesterday. And that has to do with the investigation into Bowe Bergdahl which has now been concluded. What’s that? When will we get the results? Oh, you know when, and it ain’t gonna be soon. From (retired) Col. Ronald A. Nelson:

The investigation of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has entered its final stage, but it may take months before it is presented for action. Nothing like delaying the report until after the November election cycle. This delay may be essential for the President and his party, should they plan to release Bergdahl without punishment for desertion. Need I remind everyone this is not the first investigation surrounding his desertion on June 30, 2009. An investigation took place when he first deserted. That investigation found that he left without authorization and it was sufficient to recommended court martial upon his apprehension.

However, it appears that the Army was directed, by the White House, to open a new investigation that is more compatible with the Administration’s narrative for Bergdahl’s disappearance. After all, the President heralded him as a hero, rescued by his Administration, in exchange for 5 heavy weight terrorist. It just wouldn’t do to find otherwise. Especially, so close to the November mid-term elections. How would it look if the headlines reported the White House exchanged a deserter for 5 high level terrorist… just before the people went to the polls in November?

MG Dahl, the investigating officer, is also investigating the circumstances surrounding Bergdahl’s five year stay with the Taliban. The Army reported Gen. Dahl’s draft findings will be ready for legal review in several weeks, before it is presented to a board of senior officers for action. Of course these delays are unnecessary, as an investigation and report by the command in Afghanistan has already ruled he left his post without authorization. This new investigation appears to be an effort to white wash Bergdahl’s conduct. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Oh, what a surprise. The last time, it was Benghazi being downplayed as just a “crowd gone wild” over a video, as well as the White House advance team issue. This time, they are withholding the results of the Bergdahl investigation. What else is new?

Oh, I know what! The Supreme Court and a federal judge have blocked Voter ID laws in two states not a month out form the upcoming elections. Shocking – not. Here’s more from Fox News:

A federal judge likened Texas’ strict voter ID requirement to a poll tax deliberately meant to suppress minority voter turnout and struck it down less than a month before Election Day — and mere hours after the U.S. Supreme Court blocked a similar measure in Wisconsin.

The twin rulings released Thursday evening represent major and somewhat surprising blows to largely Republican-backed voter identification rules sweeping the nation that have generally been upheld in previous rulings. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

I am not sure why ensuring the integrity of the vote is considered a Republican thing rather than an AMERICAN thing, but there you have it. We all know no poor people can manage to get themselves to the DMV, apparently, even though in states like mine (SC), people were offered FREE RIDES to go. Same for Milwaukee County, as it turns out. Regardless, what I know is if there is a will, there is a way. Seems to me, anyway.

Yep, all of this is happening just in time for the upcoming election: overturning or suspending Voter ID laws, and withholding the results of the Bergdahl investigation. As the Church Lady used to say, “Isn’t that convenient…” Indeed it is. And it is also indicative of how this Administration operates, demonstrated so well by this Branco cartoon (included in Col. Nelson’s post):

O's Priorities 2014 6-19 Branco

Uh, yeah. That, and this excellent Branco cartoon below, say it all:

Yep, I’d say that covers it! How about you? This is an Open Thread.

I didn’t like Tom DeLay either. He was an arrogant POS who deserved to get his comeuppance. But he didn’t deserve to have his career and his life destroyed by a bogus lawsuit. Using the law to punish your enemies is despicable! The Dems did the same thing to Ted Stevens in Alaska.

It is up to the voters to remove elected officials from office unless they have actually committed a crime. Trumped up charges are a disgrace to our legal system. But then what aren’t these days. Our “government” enforces laws if and when they feel like it or if the law is something of which they approve. Who knew the law worked that way?

Well said, Marge. Regardless of what one thinks of n elected official, if that person has not committed a crime, ruining them for political gain is reprehensible.

Heck, they ruined Palin’s political carreer too with bogus allegations in essence. Since she had to deal with very rivolous lawsuit the Dems threw at her, it cost her half a million and time not doing the ork of the state. Such an incredibly low road to take, isn”t it?

I recall DeLay was rrogant, but yeah to ruin him like that as just wrong.

Have Republicans finally found a way to defuse the ‘war on women’ attack?

    By Nia-Malika Henderson

The GOP may have “finally” found a way to defuse the “war on women” meme but only after it did a lot of damage. No point in trying to explain to a culture that wants all the freebies it can get that women who wait with hands out for someone else to help them will never get much of anywhere.

Empowering is the answer and it used to be what feminists were all about. Now feminism is about whiny women complaining that someone else isn’t doing enough for them.

I don’t know if the right can overcome this cultural shift. Women, like blacks, have been convinced that they are victims and government must rescue them. Poor pathetic little critters. But don’t dare say it if you want to be elected. The “gimmees” will rush to the polling places to defeat anyone that tells them they have to learn to stand on their own two feet. All JMO of course.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It truly is disturbing to see how far we have gone backwards in the past decade, but especially under this “Life of Julia” administration. It is upsetting, to say the least.

And the thing is, when you look at the Reps, they have many powerful women in power, like my governor, for instance. Yet, Dems were all too ready to believe it. Have Reps said stupid things abt women? Yes. Have Dems? Yes. People can be stupid sometimes.

I fear you are right, Marge. But I hope maybe some light will filter in to some of these folks.
