Happy Thanksgiving, And Long Weekend Open Thread

It is that time of year when we set aside our differences, try and take a break from some of the intensity facing our nation on a number of different levels, and give Thanks for the blessings in our lives. For many, it is an opportunity to spend time with family and friends who we don’t get to see too often in our hectic day-to-day lives. It is a day for us just to take a moment, to pause, to shelve for just a day many of the issues facing us on a regular basis.

And as I say that, I do want to lift up those for whom their daily living is constantly in jeopardy, those who have lost their jobs, those who find themselves on the streets, those who don’t know from where their next meal is coming. May we remember them on Thanksgiving and other days, helping if we can through volunteering or donations to Food Pantries.

That said, many of us look forward to spending time with loved ones. My partner and I are heading up to Abingdon, VA, to spend Thanksgiving with my almost-98 year old Great Aunt June:

Her caretaker, the niece of her best friend, will be there as well as many of her family members, and another niece of Aunt June’s with her family. It should be a good time, and I am thankful indeed to be able to spend it with the one remaining sibling of my mom’s mom, Malta, whom I favor. It should be a fun gathering, and I am thankful (!) to be able to go.

Of course, there is also some good football on Thanksgiving, as well as well as the Macy’s Day Parade. AND, there is the National Dog Show on Saturday night (on NBC). So in addition to good food, good fellowship, and the making of good memories (hopefully – depends on the family, right? Ahahahaha…), there will be some other fun things to watch, see, and do this weekend.

Thanksgiving is a special day, to be sure, for many reasons. It begins the Winter Holiday season, a magical time of year, I think, and I love it. I also love the music for this time of year, including the thanks given for a good harvest. All too often, we forget just how hard people work to help us put food on our tables every day, not just at Thanksgiving. Living in a rural area, and having close friends who are farmers, I see daily what it takes. And it is something for which to be thankful indeed, as this hymn, “Come Ye Thankful People Come,” highlights beautifully:

And no Thanksgiving would be complete, for me, at least, without this celebration of the day. This particular rendition also reminds us of how this day came to be in the life of our young nation so long ago:

May we be thankful for the friendships of that day, to those we have today, for our families, for the fellowship we have here and elsewhere, and for the many blessings in our lives.

A very Happy Thanksgiving to you all. If you are traveling, please be careful. And I have to say it again, please know how thankful I am for you, one and all.

May you also have a wonderful weekend. This is your Thanksgiving and Weekend Open Thread!

Stupid iPad – I tried to hit for 5 stars…

Anyway, isn’t that amazing? She is still quite sharp, too.

Thanks so much, mcnorman. We are on the other side of a snow storm now, having encountered it while driving over a Mtn. Thank heavens that is behind us!

I hope you and yours have a great day today!

My pleasure, Kin – glad you liked it!

And thank you. After driving through a snow storm, we arrived at Aunt June’s safe and sound. We had a fantastic celebration, and got to meet some wonderful people. So glad we were able to make the trip.

So true Keno–But that is what Leftover Pumpkin is like with me on the Friday after and my kids still joke about it.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I am working on a piece of pumpkin pie as we speak. And will be out in the kitchen half the night stealing little tiny slices – one at a time till I eat 1/2 the pie. But since I baked the pie I think I’m entitled. 😉

        • kinthenorthwest Says:

thats what I do all friday a silver at t time until I can find no more

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Lol, I would say you are entitled to that pie, Marge! And hey, it has all the basic food groups, so let’s just call it health food!

I am currently reading Washington’s Biography who was a Godly man.
So I will wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving using part of his Thanksgiving Proclamation, something we have seen from the WH in a long time..
Closing with a cute and funny song to make you smile.

This prayer is abridged from George Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1789.
May we all unite in rendering unto God our sincere and humble thanks— For His kind care and protection of the people of this country, For the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have enjoyed,

For the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness,

For the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge, and in general for all the great and various favors which He hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And may we also unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him—

To pardon our national and other transgressions,

To enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually,

To render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed,

To protect and guide all nations and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord,

To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science,

And generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

The most important game of the year

doing the Mummers strut all through the place

Well 49ers are losing their butt right now

    • kenoshamarge Says:

So glad you’re Eagles won Helen! The Packers don’t play until Sunday and then against New England. The Pats haven’t lost a game at home this years and the Pack is only 3 and 3 on the road. I am worried.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yeah, the Pats, like the Sox, seem t do pretty well at home, particularly with the officiating. Ahem. I hope your Packers best ’email big!

And congrats abt the Eagles, Helen. Sorry abt the 49ers, Kin!

  16. HELENK3 Says:

they think this is a good thing??

  17. HELENK3 Says:

good advice that probably will not be followed

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Great article Helen – thanks for sharing. And sadly, I’m sure you’re right, they won’t follow this good advice. Too tied to their own ideology and their own self-regard. What they haven’t the brains to see and understand is that with every incident like this there are more people who disregard anything they say. The thugs, race-baiters and permanent victims will listen because they need to believe that their problems are caused by someone else.

The great cartoonist Michael Ramirez says it best. Again.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Great cartoon, Marge. It is astonishing the way this has been blown up. Yep, Brown was the one responsible, alright…

        • kenoshamarge Says:

Only to those who believe that we are responsible for our own actions. Those who see themselves as permanent victims always look for someone else to blame.

  18. HELENK3 Says:

something to think about. would this movie be made today? how would the Pilgrims fare in today’s America?

  19. HELENK3 Says:

Eric Holder lying- imagine that. /s

Adams on Dobbs: Holder Lying, DOJ Doesn’t Think They Can Charge Wilson

“Holder wants his base to continue to believe there might be federal charges. … It won’t happen.”

    By David Steinberg

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Shocking!! Ahem. Yeah, that seems exactly like what holder would do, so we have all these people continuing on their ranting way, disrupting the lives of regular people, all for some cop-assaulting robber who refused to do as he was told. Again, sad a life was lost, but as you posted above, the one responsible for that was Brown.

Oh, and Kin, I meant to mention on yours that this has happened before does not surprise me. I am sure officers are taught not to ever let this happen, and that is precisely why (I am sure of it – the woman who now cares for my great aunt is a retired police detective. She is furious abt what has been going on with Wilson. Her whole family is.)

  21. kenoshamarge Says:

The poor little reporter who published Officer Wilson’s home address is getting a taste of her own medicine and she doesn’t like it. Maybe in the future she’ll think twice before putting someone’s life in danger – because that’s what she did. If only to protect herself from having the same thing happen to her.

She’s getting hassled, and IMO deservedly so. Officer Wilson and his wife were/are having their lives threatened and she provided an address for the sickos. Guess who has my sympathy? And that person doesn’t work for the NYT.

NYT Reporter Who Published Darren Wilson Address Calling Cops Nonstop

The New York Times journalist who published Darren Wilson’s home address wants police protection and has been calling the police nonstop, Gotnews.com has learned.

Julie Bosman “keeps calling the 020th District station complaining about people harassing and threatening her,” our source told us. She’s also “complaining about numerous food deliveries being sent to her residence.”

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Evidently, this reporter has not ever heard these expressions before: what goes around comes around; what is good for the goose is good for the gander; and karma is a bitch.

She assumed, in her sanctimonious manner, that Wilson deserved to have his life put on the line because of her self righteous actions. Um, yeah, no. So yeah, maybe she will think twice before essentially trying to get someone killed (and there is no doubt in my mind that could happen thanks to her. If, God forbid, it does, she should be charged as an accessory.).

    • HELENK3 Says:

for miss NYT and her whining

  22. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I was just hearing on the news that all kinds of groups are in Ferguson ratcheting up the protests, like the New Black Panthers, some socialist group, and more. Thanks, Obama and Holder, for the crappy way you handled this situation.

  23. kenoshamarge Says:

If you watch this video from FOX News be sure to have tissues handy. It is hearting breaking and heartwarming all at the same time.

  24. HELENK3 Says:

    well isn’t this just peachy

backtrack bunch to promote ferguson indoctrination classroom memorials to mike brown, student letters to darren wilson

I never want to see a democrat in any political office again. they can not be trusted with my country.
I do not care if we have to vote independent, libertarian, green party , republican , wiccan whatever

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I agree. The Dems have allowed the far left to destroy their party. I will never trust, or support a Dem again. A Dem in office is a Dem who will support his/her party.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Sadly, you are right, Marge. It seems the only time a Dem stands up to the Party is when they are running for re-election. Once they get back in, they return to their Party ways…

  25. HELENK3 Says:

yeah they’re all mike browns now

    • mcnorman Says:

The more that they behave this way, the more people will get sick and tired of them. I look at these dunces and think to myself about how is it possible that this entitled bunch of losers actually believe that they are making the world a better place by behaving like this? It is truly perplexing. They are such self centered emotionally stunted narcissists that they cannot see the forest through the trees.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I hope they keep right on alienating people. And I hope Obama and the rest of the left keeps supporting them. The more this continues and the more normal, sane people see of this behavior the less support they will get. And the media that thrives on strife is trusted less all the time.

They have met the enemy – and it is them! Funny how that works. They are the enemy of all I believe and hold dear and they are destroying themselves.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Marge, I was thinking abt that this morning after having had Thanksgiving dinner with a group of everyday Americans in VA. They (Obama nd crow) have no idea how angry they are making people with things like Ferguson. So yeah, the far lefties, NBPP, and Communists might be happy with all this discord, but the bulk of the country is not amused…

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Mcnorman, you said it. That sums it up well!

CNN not reporting honestly? Well whodathunkit? /s

CNN is lying when they say Ferguson protests were ‘peaceful’

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Shocking! Ahem. There is a reason why they continue to be at the bottom. That is where bottom feeders belong.

A friend had a link on Facebook to a Milwaukee sheriff ripping Obama and Holder new ones. I have a dickens of a time getting links on this iPad, but wanted to mention it. Oh, and the sheriff is black, I might add.
