Grilled Gruber *Open Thread*

by

As I type, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) has begun his Opening Remarks at the House Oversight Committee Hearing on the statements made by Obamacare architect, Jonathan Gruber. (You can watch it live HERE.)

Also present is CMS Chief, Marilyn Tavenner, who received a bit of a tongue lashing from the get go since the HHS has refused to provide documents that had been subpoenaed, then sending a huge document dump on Monday night, still not including some key evidence the House Committee had requested.

Ms. Tavenner has come under the microscope as well for her dubious claims regarding Obamacare enrollment. From USA Today:

It took a junior congressional staffer about 20 minutes to discover what the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says it didn’t know about its own health exchange enrollment data.

Marilyn Tavenner, the administrator for the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services, told Congress in September that 7.3 million people had enrolled in coverage through Obamacare.

What she did not say — and Obama administration officials say they did not realize — was that nearly 400,000 of them were standalone dental plans.

That was revealed only after the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee asked for the data to back up those numbers. Even then, it took HHS a month to provide hundreds of pages of barely legible printouts. When the committee asked for spreadsheets, HHS provided 289 of them — all password protected. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

In other words, she is hardly a paragon of virtue or an honest broker in all of this, but compared to Gruber, she looks like a choir girl.

And that leads to Jonathan Gruber. Here are some of the statements Professor Gruber has made which the Committee, no doubt, will want him to explain. From the Daily Caller:

[…] As Gruber faces the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Tuesday morning, here are some classic Gruber-ish quotes from a San Francisco podcast appearance in January 2012:

Obama lied about the law and told congressmen to vote against their constituents’ wishes:

“I wish that President Obama could have stood up and said, ‘You know, I don’t know if this bill is going to control costs. It might, it might not. We’re doing our best. But let me tell you what it’s going to do…” (goes on to explain that some people would die without insurance) (49:55)

“If he could make that speech? Instead, he says ‘I’m going to pass a bill that will lower your health care costs.’ That sells. Now, I wish the world was different. I wish people cared about the 50 million uninsured in America…But, you know, they don’t. And I think, once again, I’m amazed politically that we got this bill through.

I mean, we actually asked many politicians to vote against their self-interest. Against what their constituents were telling them, to really do the right thing. And I think they deserve our support and applause for doing that.” (51:04)

Super-Genius Jonathan Gruber Doesn’t Know That Much About Sports

“And to deny this bill because it doesn’t do enough to control health care costs is like criticizing the Giants, the San Francisco Giants, because they didn’t win the Super Bowl.” (29:00)

Seconds later, he calls conservatives stupid

People don’t understand this bill…I don’t expect to convince people who think that President Obama was born in Kenya. I’m not going to convince those people.” (29:30)

He tells people not to read the law (this might be a good one to bring up at the Oversight “transparency” hearing):

“Nonetheless, if you read the Affordable Care Act, which I recommend you do not…” (21:40)

He didn’t know how to keep costs down so he just came up with a bunch of random stuff:

“You get demagogued. You get shouted down by people making stuff up. Even if we KNEW how to control health care costs, we couldn’t do it politically. So what do you do? You’re President Obama and the Congress. You promised you’re going to control health care costs…Your pollsters have told you that the American public doesn’t actually care about insurance coverage, all they care about is health care cost…What do you do? Well, you do what I like to think of as sort of a “spaghetti approach.” Throw a bunch of stuff against the wall and see what sticks.” (22:30) […] (Click here to read the rest if you can stomach it.)

The arrogance, the dripping disdain, the condescension, all while this man has become a MULTIMILLIONIARE on OUR dime, is just staggering.

And in case you need a visual refresher of just how patronizing, duplicitous, intentionally deceptive, and gloating Gruber is, here is a little reminder:

While Gruber is currently apologizing for his comments, beginning with claiming he is not a politician, it is hard to buy what he is selling considering the NUMEROUS times he made derogatory comments about the American people, as well as GLEEFULLY discussing how they hid the truth of the impact of this law when they were working to get it passed.

As for Gruber’s claim he is not a politician, he IS an MIT professor, and as such, should be aware that what he says matters. Never mind that being the case even more as a PAID WITH TAXPAYER MONEY Consultant to Obama and a number of states on health care.

I look forward to seeing the grilling begin now that Gruber is done with his Opening Statement. I don’t give a damn how much he apologizes, or tries to dodge (as he did in his Statement) that what he said then is not true now. I hope the Republicans will hold his feet to the fire since it Is evident from Rep. Elijah Cummings’ Opening Remarks that he is madder that this gives ammunition to the Republicans than all the lying, duplicity, trickery, change of Senate rules to pass it with a simple majority, and on I could go. Shocking, I know, especially coming from Cummings. Ahem.

Anyway – this is an Open Thread, so you can discuss the hearings, the continued rioting by protestors in Berkeley over the Garner case (and I recommend this good article a friend highlighted at Facebook from the American Thinker by a DOCTOR on what happened to Garner), or whatever else is on your minds.

Obama praises the protesting of the Grand Jury verdicts, despite the fact they were the right results, claiming they “trigger the nation’s conscience”: http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/226379-obama-protests-necessary-to-trigger-nations-conscience

All part of the Squirrel runaround – remember we’re all stoopid people who will look at the new shiny protest instead of obama’s failures and scandals.
I know that we will recover and regain our status in the world – not the first time we’ve came from behind the 8 ball.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

From your keyboard to the universe, Piper – I sure hope you are right abt the health of our nation.

And you said it – that is exactly what it is like. This Administration intentionally wants to deflect lest we pay attention to all of the crapola they are pulling on us. Same with the release by the Senate Dems of the CIA report. They seem to have forgotten they SUPPORTED what they are now demonizing (no matter where people may fall on what the CIA did, they were given sanction to do it). The Dems are constantly on the attack to deflect from their very poor leadership. Sadly, too many people fall for their tricks.

I’d better explain the 10,000 steps program that I’m currently in. I finally bought a ‘fitbit’ to ensure that I’m moving enough to lose the weight that I’ve put on since the ‘change’ Have a doctor’s visit coming up and really don’t want my overweight number put on grubermint forms/website. Also reducing bad cholesterol by healthy eating and fish oil instead of taking statins given all their side effects.
Due to the weatherman’s lying about when the rain would stop (noon but lasted all day into the night) I was forced into staying indoors and walking around in circles in my small open plan house.
At 11PM, I achieved my goal (obsessively checking tracker thru out day then feeling buzz on my arm).
Today, a gloomy day with no precip, will find me at the park.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I completely understand why you are engaging in this program. It is a great idea to find another way to deal with high cholesterol than taking statins. I take a cholesterol product that Dr. Sinatra sells, as well as the omega 3 oils and stuff. Seems to be helping. Cinnamon is another excellent way to cut down on cholesterol, and it is tasty, too! 🙂

I wish you well in your program, and hope your doctor’s appointment goes well!

So far, Gruber is refusing to answer any questions of substance, including claiming he didn’t know who paid for the grants he received – US. He acts like he is mindless, while expecting us to believe he is as stupid as he claimed we were.

I don’t know how these Rep. Reps do it – not yell at him, or at Marilyn Tavenner, who has been equally as smug and unwilling to answer the SIMPLEST of questions.

What a waste of our taxpaying dollars…

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

And for reasons I simply cannot fathom, they brought in some guy who works as waiter who is championing how great Obamacare is. HUH?? Who CARES what he has to say at this point?? When so many LOST their ins, or had their premiums skyrocket, I really don’t care abt this one guy coming in, presumably at the behest of Dems, to dilute these proceedings. This was supposed to be abt GRUBER and the machinations by which he aided and abetted the Dems in getting this thing passed (by them, and only them).

  4. kenoshamarge Says:

Issa asks Gruber if he’s stupid:

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

He should have answered in the affirmative because he sure is acting like he is. Can’t believe this man is a prof at MIT…

      • kenoshamarge Says:

When called to account this arrogant POS ain’t so tough is he?

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I’ll say. What a putz. And Tavenner isn’t much better.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Wow – Rep. Gowdy is on fire again in his questioning of Gruber. He really does show Gruber to be the asshole idiot he is.

Oh, wait – did I just type that out loud? I guess I am just worn down from all of the stunning assholicness we have seen the past couple of weeks…

          • kenoshamarge Says:

Is there video of Gowdy grilling the Gruber? I want so much to see that. Gruber “thinks” he’s smart. Gowdy is smart. Big difference.

  5. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Marge, Gowdy didn’t get to question Gruber until after noon, so I imagine it will take an hr or so before it is up. I’ll keep an eye out for it, though.

And you are SO right – there is a big, big difference between Gruber and Gowdy. I’ll take the latter over the former any day of the week, month, or year…

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

      Here Gowdy taking on Gruber:

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Thanks so much Rev – I was looking and couldn’t find this.

The contempt Gowdy feels for Gruber is palpable. And Gruber’s repeated, pathetic defense is repulsive. It’s obvious, at least to me, that someone has told the arrogant POS that he will have to crawl. And so he did. But not well and not believably.

And wasn’t that a nice little zinger Issa threw in a the end?

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Gowdy’s contempt is a reflection of how most of us feel abt him, especially after this hearing. Who knew I could feel MORE contempt for Gruber? Yet, I do. What a weasel. What a LIAR. What a JACKASS, claiming he didn’t know who paid his grants, or how much he got, or that he’d have to ask his atty if he could answer. Such a piece of work.

Oh, yeah – Issa was on fire today, as were people like Jim Jordan, Chaffetz, and a few others who really let him have it.

In the end, though, he got away with it all, didn’t he? I know he lost a couple of state contracts, but he doesn’t have to pay us back for his deception and lies. Nope. He can just go on his merry way and we are stuck with Obamacare, at least for now.

          • kenoshamarge Says:

Yes he did get away with it.

However for an arrogant elitist like Gruber the fact that he was made to crawl to people he loathes, and that he believes he is far superior to, is a punishment of its own.

He will relive this hearing many times in his mind. Everyone that he’s made to feel small over the years, him being so smart and all, will be laughing at him behind his back for the rest of his life.

For a man like him it is and will continue to be a punishment. Perhaps a worse one than any the law could give. And it’s doubtful that he will be asked to “speak” at any venues in the near, or far, future.

People who think like him will want to keep their distance lest they be tainted. They will assure him privately that he has their support. I don’t think this man will rise from the ashes.

            • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Good points, Marge – I imagine that will be a torture unto itself for someone as arrogant, patronizing, and condescending as he seems to be routinely. I guess that is all the comeuppance he will have after lying through his teeth, and helping to saddle us with the ACA.

Btw, don’t you love how the BIGGEST problem Dems like Elijah Cummings have is that Gruber gave the Republicans ammunition? Not that he lied, not that he deceived, not that he (and the others) knew this was a tax, or was going to increase the cost of premiums, or ANY of that, but his BIGGEST problem was how it impacts THEM with Republicans?? Un-freaking-believable. Here is Cummings:

Not for nothing, but Cummings is lying away there, too. PLENTY of Americans told them how unhappy we were with this bill (now law). PLENTY of Americans said not to pass it. And the Dems sure as HELL were not open and transparent abt it when they were “marking it up,” as Cummings said, often resorting to closed door, secret meetings. So, the Dems DO bear a lot of responsibility for doing exactly what Gruber said they were doing, which is what I think is the real problem for Cummings. Gruber showed their hand.

So many scandals, with so many Americans letting Obama grab more and more powers that were never meant to be his alone. There were many reasons that our forefathers wrote the constitution and made 3 branches of government for Checks and Balances. You have done such a good job on putting so many of them together.

Great article on Garner, which says. what so many others have been feeling, it was Garner’s Health and Life Style that contributed mostly to his death.
The other day I was in a store and some poor parent had to finally physically pick up their screaming child who was throwing a temper tantrum. It was then the child started screaming about how their mother was abusing them. How many have you have witnessed this type of scene or had your own child pull a similar temper tantrum in at a store.
Last night when I was re-watching the Garner video, I realized how similar Garner was to that screaming child throwing a Temper Tantrum in the store.
For most of the video the police are asking Garner to just move along many numerous times. However, Garner just keeps screaming at the officers, sometimes screaming obscenities . Watch the video, Garner was putting on a show for his friends and the camera, however it backfired on him.
If one is really having trouble breathing or having a heart attack they are barely rasping.
If you all notice in the video, Garner’s tone and level of his screaming gets even louder when the police tell him he is under arrest.
Garner is the screaming Brat throwing a temper tantrum in the Grocery store, yet the police did not give into his screaming.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

That is just it, Kin – so much of what is in the video contradicts the claims of the Left, and even some on the RIght (like Judge Napolitano, for whom I have lost a LOT of respect). The officer does NOT have him in a chokehold, and a chokehold did NOT cause his death. I’ll take the doctor’s word who works with severely obese patients over a judge in this case.

One of the other things the doctor noted was how STRONG Garner was. He was a BIG, STRONG, man, one who was resisting arrest. He knew the drill, and refused to be arrested. The cops HAD to do something. Taking him down is something they do all the time without these results, but his own bad health played a part in it. Had he gone along peacefully from the get-go, he would be alive today. THAT, and that alone, is responsible for his demise.

I know Napolitano was supposed to be on Megyn last night talking abt Garner and all. You may recall that she told Richard Fowler, the black activist, that he was arrogant to presume he knew more than the Grand Jury did in Ferguson since he had not reviewed all of the evidence or heard all of the testimony that those people had.

The same goes for Napolitano who, by his own admission, had seen NONE of the evidence, yet that didn’t stop him from saying, over and over and over again, that he rejected the decision by the Grand Jury.

So, are we a nation of laws or aren’t we, Judge? How can one week, the GJ decision is the be all end all, and just a week later, it isn’t. I hate hypocrisy. Just hate it, and I don’t care from which side it is coming.

  7. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Well, the hearing is all over, and in essence, Gruber got off with using the: I am a small man with a huge ego who said all kinds of things to make myself look smart.

IOW, the Asshole Defense. It is amazing that he sat there, under oath, and spewed the crap he did. Geee.

  8. HELENK3 Says:

He has to testify again when the new congress convenes. Maybe we will get more truthful answers then

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yeah, hopefully we’ll get more from him, but I am not holding my breath. He’s a weasel.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I suspect that Gruber, like so many of his ilk, isn’t “wired” to tell the truth. The truth is whatever he wants it to be. Thus when he lies he feels no remorse. He and those like him are truly amoral. And they frighten me more than the immoral because they have no limit. The immoral knows somewhere within that what they do is wrong. The amoral don’t know and don’t care.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Marge, sadly, I suspect you are right. Remorse does not seem to be big on his list, or any of the other Dems, unless they get caught at something. Even then, they have the remarkable ability to turn it around and make it someone else’s fault…

Holy smokes – good for her!

It is hard to take ANY “investigation” seriously that doesn’t bother to talk to the parties who were actively involved. It is a $40 million boondoggle intended to make the Dems look better than they are. The amnesia they have developed is astounding, and that the MSM is promoting on their behalf.

And this goes no matter WHAT side you come down on this issue. The Dems are using our money to promote their own agenda, and their actions, by their OWN admission, is putting our country at risk. THAT is astonishing – that they would CHOOSE to put us at risk just to release their one-sided report.
