At Long Last, The Second Gowdy-Led Benghazi Committee Hearing *Open Thread*

Yes, beginning at 10:00am Wednesday morning, Rep. Gowdy will chair the second hearing on what really happened in Benghazi. As Rep. Gowdy noted on his Facebook page, the hearing can be watched in its entirety on C-Span. Just to whet your whistle, here is Rep. Gowdy’s Opening Statement from the first hearing:

Oh, yeah, I am looking forward to this, as I know many others are. Yep, it could not come at a better time

That is especially true in light of the recent, tremendously flawed, House Intelligence Committee Report, which failed to listen to the voices of the people INVOLVED on the ground.

Ahem. Not that I have strong feelings about it or anything.

Let’s just refresh our memories with the stories of some of those people who were THERE, in the midst of this battle:

Every time. They get me every time. Their story is so powerful, and it is critical eye-witness testimony.

And that is why these brave, courageous men, are livid with the conclusions of the House report, and have detailed all of the many inaccuracies. Here are just a few from Breitbart:

[…] It comes as a very big disappointment to us as those on the front lines that this report is full of inaccuracies and bias. We can only assume that this is the case because Rep. Rogers and others are attempting to protect their reputations, and protect, or further the careers, of others. But that should be left for another time.

We, as the men who protected other Americans on the ground in Benghazi, as best we could, are here to point out specifically what this HIPSC report and Mike Rogers got wrong. What follows is a detailed breakdown of some of the inaccuracies in Rogers’ report.

FALSE FINDING #1: Page 8, paragraph 2 of the US House of Representative Intelligence Report states: security Officers from the CIA’s Benghazi Annex recalled hearing explosions from an unknown location around 9:40 p.m.

This is incorrect. As we and others stated during our testimony before the House of Representatives’ Committee, we were first contacted at 9:32 p.m. and the explosions and gunfire were known to be at what was known to us as the U.S. consulate, which per security requirements after the attack, was changed to the U.S. Special Mission and was then called the “Temporary Mission Facility” by U.S. Department of State, and later in this report. Note that the location of all gunfire and explosions were known to those of us at the U.S. Annex. At no time did we state to the committee that we did not know the location of the gunfire or explosions. We had visited what we knew to be the U.S. Consulate on a weekly basis.

FALSE FINDING #3: Page 9, Paragraph 4/Page 10, Paragraph 1 states: Within approximately one hour, at about 12:30 AM, the attackers began one of several attempts to assault the Annex. Some of this attack was captured on video. CIA personnel recounted that the attacks included RPG’s, satchel charges, gelatin explosives, and small arms fire, with around five to ten people amassing in the adjacent field. These security personnel were able to repel the attackers. Around 2:00 to 2:30 AM, there was a second attempt on the compound that lasted 5 to 10 minutes that was also repelled.

This portion of the report significantly downplays the ferocity of the multiple attacks on the Annex. The second attack involved closer to 20 or more terrorists and was much longer and more aggressive than the first. We have stated this on many occasions to all that have interviewed us, including Rep. Mike Rogers and his committee. It should also be noted emphatically that the GRS security contractors— Kris “Tanto” Paronto, John “Tig” Tiegen, Mark “Oz” Geist, Jack Silva, and DB Benton—were the only CIA personnel who saw the attackers from start to finish, and we were the only CIA personnel who were involved in both firefights.

Both the Benghazi Chief of Base and CIA GRS Team Leader hid in Building C during both attacks and the following mortar attack. Neither the Chief of Base “Bob” or the GRS Team Leader came up to the Annex Roofs or fighting positions to see what was going on outside the Annex walls. Any testimony outside that coming from the GRS Security Contractors holds limited value since no one except the GRS Security Contractors saw or was involved with both attacks in their entirety. […] (Click here to read the rest of this article, and the MANY false findings by those on the ground.)

This is just the tip of the iceberg of the many issues these soldiers-on-the-ground have with the House Report, though I have to say, some folks feel that the media didn’t really read it all first before the jumped on the “Benghazi is DONE!” bandwagon. Seems that the media chose to ignore some of the salient points in the report. I know – shocking that the media would twist and turn a report for their own narrative and bias. Rep. Rogers tries to claim he was focusing primarily on the TALKING points in the report, so there is that.

If you want to remind yourself of the many and numerous issues that have come up about Benghazi, Sharyl Attkisson has an entire section dedicated to Benghazi at her site. You can access it HERE. Who could forget about the scrubbing party at the State Department, for instance? Or contradictory testimony between the White House and a former CIA person? Oh, yeah – there’s a bunch in there.

It will be interesting to see what we learn from today’s hearing. I figure anytime Rep. Gowdy is involved, we will at least be able to witness his legal proficiency and prowess, and will hopefully get to the bottom of what really happened.

Feel free to comment on the Hearing, or whatever else is going on today. This is your Benghazi Hearing Open Thread.

between backtrack and holder fanning the flames for a race war, and difi fanning the flames of terrorism the dems seem to be intent on a scorched earth policy against America since they lost the election.
maybe it their true colors coming out and they are NOT red-white-and blue. If you had told me 10 years ago I would come to believe that the dems are not in the best interest of America I would have said you were wrong. the dem party I knew and voted for is dead. I do not know what this sick thing is that took it over

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Helen, I am so disturbed with the manner by which the Democrats crafted the CIA report (as I noted at Facebook). That they spoke to NO ONE in the CIA abt it, that they wasted $40 million on a report that one of their own, Sen. Bob Kerrey said was “partisan” and which worked to get data to support the conclusion they wanted, while putting America and our assets at even GREATER risk, just boggles the mind.

Here is the Op-ed piece by Kerrey:

I was thinking the same thing abt the Dems. That they care more abt making our enemies feel good, to show them the “empathy” abt which Hillary spoke, while putting US at risk, is abhorrent.

Great posting as usual Amy. We cannot and should not forget what happened in Benghazi.
Right now I am just so pissed that our country is now under high alert. due to the CIA reports. Not only our country but Americans all over the world, including our allies.
Since when does the head of any country put their country, and its citizens in this much danger.
Strange that Obama will release this report, yet will not release the Fast and Furious papers, the real Benghazi papers, the IRS papers, and oh H3LL it would take forever to list all the different scandals that Obama is not releasing information on.
I do believe that there are other motives behind this besides just trying to divert attention away from all the abuse of power by Obama and his people.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

      Thanks so much, Kin!

And you raise an EXCELLENT point – where the hell are the OTHER reports, like on Fast and Furious?? If we have a right to know what our government is doing in our name, as they are claiming to justify this, why the hell aren’t they releasing THAT? Not to mention the other issues you raised.

Yeah – this hypocrisy is so ideologically driven, it is obscene.

  7. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I love Rep. Jim Jordan. He is a real firebrand, isn’t he?

I swear, though – I am SOOOO sick of the stonewalling by these witnesses, like Starr. Infuriating. Just infuriating. To not be able to tell the Committee WHY THE HELL WE WERE IN BENGHAZI is absurd. Grrr.

  9. piper Says:

    Stolen from commenter – interesting
“Releasing this report at all is a political calculation as the Dems gear up for 2016. First of all, Benghazi investigations will be heating up in January, led by bulldog Trey Gowdy. Obviously, the video excuse didn’t hold water as few believed it so now the Dems are dumping on the CIA and GWB. Why GWB? Because the 3 AQ leaders were waterboarded while he was in office and that led to the courier who lead us to bin Laden. Barry loves to spike the football, but the truth is that he can barely walk and chew gum at the same time. He certainly can’t manage to rescue American journalists in a manner that saves them from execution by our enemies, so does anyone really think using his techniques (negotiating with Iran over nuclear weapons), he would have found OBL? Surely not. But I digress.

The Dems are tying Bush to CIA interrogations in an attempt to say, “Well, he started it!” But GWB had nothing to do with Libya or, specifically, Benghazi. The story is pretty much out now that the Benghazi compound was being used to run guns to AQ types to take out Assad and replace with Bari’s friends, the MusBros. At the time, the plan had been successful in both Egypt and Libya. Egypt has since outlawed MB and Libya is now a terrorist haven. That all happened while Bari and Hildebeast were running the show. So they’re pointing fingers elsewhere as a matter of political survival. The annex was allegedly being used – or rumored to be – a CIA rendition site. So dump that on the CIA, even though they were asked to do it (allegedly). Plus the planned kidnapping of the ambassador to exchange for the blind sheik as confirmed by one of the Ansar al Sharia leaders. AND almost 20,000 MANPADS are on the loose in the Middle East, some of which took out 18 of our military aircraft in Afghanistan, killing all aboard, including the SEALS/Special Forces who were part of Extortion 17.

This also ties Jeb Bush to GWB (and torture) should Jeb decide to run in 2016. Guilt by name association. Bari will never admit he’s wrong about anything. This was all GWB’s fault; therefore, blame Jeb. Oh, and you can keep your doctor…”

Thanks so much for this, Piper (and the fact-checking of Gruber. I imagine there is still more to be done with as much as that guy lies.).

Interesting theory, too, abt wanting to tie this to Bush. It is ASTONISHING that Obama and the Dems continue to “Blame Bush” for everything as a way to get support. When the hell do you think they will figure out that Americans are not buying what they are selling, hence the recent shellacking?? Wow.

No doubt they are continuing to try and deflect responsibility for Obama’s very failed policies from Egypt on, as the rise in violence, also a result of his policies, continues. That he and the Dems would WILLFULLY release something that will make things even WORSE for this nation is bordering on treason, especially since they themselves have proclaimed that it will be BAD for our people both at home and abroad.

Honestly, I have never seen anything like what this Administration, and this current crop of Democrats, are trying to do to this nation. Never. And I hope I never see it again…

Thanks for the comments, Piper! Good luck with your 10k steps today! 🙂

My dear Obot-loving sister, who always assumes I am wrong, and who is willing to side with people she does not even know if they are rabid liberals like herself, and buy into every liberal assertion, was “kind” enough to share the following with me on Facebook, with this set-up: “…you may be interested in this article about words and their impact…”

And then she had this article from Daily Kos:

And my response to her was this: “THUG” does not denote ANY race, or gender, for that matter. For anyone to try and make that connection is erroneous, and Kos is certainly not someone whose exceedingly biased, race-baiting argument I would accept in the first place. I am well aware that language matters, thank you very much. Perhaps rather than subjecting me to a piece of such drivel as this you might consider – once again – that I am not in the wrong as opposed to assuming I am never right. And for you, of all people, knowing the church I attended, the church that sponsored me for ordination, and who I am in general, to accept this exceedingly offensive premise is beyond the pale.

And not for nothing, but Brown did not get shot for stealing cigars. He got shot because he attacked a police officer, tried to steal his gun, and charged him. His COLOR did not matter. And Garner was not choked to death by the police, nor was a chokehold used on him. Hell yes, words matter, as does EVIDENCE. To deny the latter to incite people is criminal. Kos is hardly one to lecture ANYONE on the use of words, and neither are you.”

Wow. Astonishing. But that is the mindset with which we are dealing.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Isn’t the illogical mind of a liberal amazing? Knowing you all her life why on earth would she send you something from the DailyKos as “proof” of anything? It never ceases to boggle my mind.

Coming from people we love, no matter how crazy we think they are, it is particularly hurtful. No matter how much we love them there are times we simply must shake our heads in disbelief at the fact that someone we love can be so very full of crap. And then get on with living our life.

You can’t cure them because they are willfully blind. And while we may not always be right we do at least have one eye on facts and logic. And in the land of the blind the one-eyed man/woman is king/queen. Or something like that.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks so much, Marge – I appreciate your response. And yes, it is hurtful, even knowing how whacky she can be, that she would pile on with that sanctimonious, holier-than-thou, jackalope, but with Daily KOS no less. How that man ever got so big is beyond me, but there you have it,

Thankfully, the people who DO know me, know that any suggestion of me being a racist is flat out false, and were quick to defend me. For that I was grateful, as well as seeing how they see me, and I guarantee you, it was a damn sight better than my sister. Oh, well.

You summed it up beautifully in your last paragraph. No cure indeed…

Guys I am not sure what is happening but I thought I would pass this along to you guys. Take it for what it’s worth, I have found that Shapiro is pretty good source.
Looking like we are still being screwed, and maybe by our own party.
Many many posts out there is seems about the GOP going to goo along with what’s happening.
What caught my eye on this forum was the video by Ben Shapiro about GOP going along with amnesty. Further into the forum was another article about GOP breaking all their campaign promises.

Thanks for this, Kin, but I am struggling with WHY they would? Is it for the workers? Presumably, if they are giving work permits, then the employers will have to pay more, won’t it?!

      Good grief…

      • kinthenorthwest Says:

Right Now its the new guys and the Treys of Congress that I truly do trust. I know the people like Trey, Scott, Love, Cruz and there are a dozen or two more of the new younger GOP Blood that will do what is good for America
However McCain,John Boehner, McConnell and some of the older GOP guard I do not trust. Some of these old GOP guard guys have been doing way too much pandering in the last couple of years, and something just not right.
I think some of you understand what I am trying to say.
Too often I have heard and seen the Old GOP Guard putting down Cruz, Trey and some of the younger ones because they don’t tow the political line, because they were truly looking out for us Americans.
