A Little Good News, And Music For The Soul *Weekend Open Thread*

by

We have made it through another week of violent protests, and egging on by this Administration of division and animosity. We have also had some pretty interesting hearings this week, too. And now that Congress is on recess for the upcoming holidays, things are calming down legislatively. One thing 2015 will bring is a whole new world of holding Obama accountable with the Republicans leading both Houses in Congress, at least I hope that is the case.

Since this is the weekend, it is time to take a step back, and focus on what is right in our country. This story highlights that nicely while giving the added bonus of a soldier surprising a child in school. You know how I love those stories. They never fail to melt my heart and bring tears to my eyes. This story is no different in that regard, but it is different insofar as this is not the Major’s child, but a child whose life he has helped change beyond measure. Here, then, is the story of “Major B” Battschinger and Bilal. From Fox8:

An army officer and the 9-year-old boy with a severe medical condition he brought from Afghanistan reconnected Tuesday morning.

Bilal Sharif was born with his bladder outside his body. He was working alongside his father in Afghanistan before Maj. Glenn Battschinger found him in 2012.

Battschinger arranged for Bilal to be brought to the United States for corrective surgery, and he has since been staying with a host family.

The pair stopped by Fox and Friends on Tuesday to talk about the effect they’ve had on each other’s lives.

“Part of the message we learn as Americans is to help other people,” Battschinger said. “Certainly, that is taught as we practice our faith and in [Boy Scouts], which is where I’ve spent most of my life. It comes back to the battlefield, and there are opportunities to help other people, too, and this is just an example.”

He also credited the host family and Long Island Jewish Medical Center for providing free medical care.

Battschinger’s help doesn’t stop with Bilal. He started Boy Scout troops in five Afghanistan areas serving more than 10,000 boys.[…] (Click here to read the rest.)

What a beautiful story, and Major Battschinger is right – that is the way Americans are raised, to help one another. What he did for Bilal, along with all the medical professionals who are helping this boy, demonstrate that in spades. It is THIS spirit that gives me hope.

There was another beautiful homecoming recently. This one was particularly meaningful for those of us who are fans of Old Friends Equine Retirement in Kentucky. You may recall that I made a pilgrimage there this summer. One of the highlights of my trip was to finally meet Little Silver Charm up close and personal:

Amy_&_Little_Silver_Charm

I just love that little guy. Well, that little guy has someone he loves as much as I love him: the original Silver Charm. Well, the champion Silver Charm has just been retired to Old Friends Equine, a dream of its founder, Michael Blowen, finally fulfilled. Here is Silver Charm’s homecoming:

And I can’t resist adding this one since it includes Little Silver Charm, too (his reaction is hilarious):

Isn’t Silver Charm HANDSOME?? And funny, too. Wow, what a gorgeous boy. And now, Little Silver Charm has his namesake at the same place with him, and he need no longer worship him from afar. What a homecoming.

And speaking of the abilities of Americans, I must share the music of Kevin Ross, a Berkley Music School graduate, whose latest song has been featured in a television ad on now. It is a perfect song for this season, I think. Here is Kevin Ross:

Isn’t that a lovely piece Ross has composed? From an interview I saw with him on Fox and Friends, he is a humble young man who is thankful for his gift, giving God the credit for his abilities.

Since Hanukkah will upon us first (December 16th), I have to share this really fun Hanukkah Mash Up with some good songs and dancing, too:

Isn’t that fun? I would LOVE to come across something like that while just being out and about, wouldn’t you? How cool.

I also really like these guys, the Maccabeats. They have some good Hanukkah songs too in which you get not just good singing, but the history of Hanukkah to boot. Here is their “Candlelight”:

I love how the Maccabeats are able to weave their faith and holidays into popular music. Cool, right?

Anyway, that’s it for me. As always, add your own tunes, or stories that touch you, or news that raises your blood pressure, whatever is on your minds. This is your Weekend Open Thread.

I don’t blame them one bit, especially considering how de Blasio has been conducting himself in terms of the cops. Honestly, he is lucky they haven’t just walked off the job and let him see how the city will run without them around…

Of course they did. And at the time blamed the CIA for not doing more. They were screaming that the CIA was to blame for 9/11 because they hadn’t done more. They were all so determined to “do something” to show what mighty patriots they were that 99 to 1 they approved the Patriot Act. Only Russ Feingold has the guts to vote no.

Now they all want to pretend they have clean hands. Including the sanctimonious hypocrite Feinstein.

Protests Don’t Derail George Will’s MSU Commencement Speech

    http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2014/12/13/protests-dont-derail-george-wills-msu-commencement-speech/

Oh my goodness someone said something the precious little darlings didn’t like and must now not be allowed to speak. This popularity among colleges students to stifle free speech is far more alarming than anything George Will could, or would say. Ditto the popularity among college women to think that the accuser somehow has more rights than the accused.

I keep hearing that we are a “nation of laws” and yet see fewer signs of it all the time. I also believe that serious crimes, like rape, need to be handled by law enforcement not some college flunky who cares more about appeasing the students and faculty than the rights of everyone involved. If you want to protest those who have done the most harm to the victims of rape recently you might look at the repulsive pervert Lena Dunham and the lack of basic reportorial skills by Rolling Stone.

Good for George Will and University President Lou Anna Simon for not allowing the protestors to shut up someone just because they didn’t like something he said or perhaps more the way he said it. These days college students seem to have very selective hearing.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

You ain’t only kidding, Marge. That says SO much abt how these young people are being taught. The only acceptable opinions are those of liberals, and they don’t even want to HEAR alternative viewpoints from their own. Such narrow-mindedness is so intellectually dishonest, yet that is what so many of their professors push. We are seeing it more and more, in more and moer extreme ways. Truly disturbing…

  16. kenoshamarge Says:

Absolutely hysterical piece by P.J. O’Rourke about Lena Dunham. You will love this one Rev – I’d bet the bank on it and I’m not ordinarily a betting woman.
