Well, THAT’S One Way For The Administration To Get Rid Of Terrorists *Open Thread* UPDATED

Update at the end of the post.

Just stop calling them terrorists. Yep, that seems to be the mindset at the White House, at least according to Deputy Press Spokesweasel, Eric Schultz.

Just to set the tone, this issue arose as Jordan is considering negotiating with ISIS. They are discovering the problem with negotiating with terrorists, and that is this: the conditions change all the time. Shocking, I know. And for reasons I cannot fathom, they are considering releasing a CONVICTED terrorist who is responsible for the deaths of 60 people. Wow.

But because Jordan is considering this option, it naturally begged the question of isn’t this PRECISELY what the USA did in terms of releasing five Taliban terrorists for Deserter (allegedly) Bergdahl? That question was asked by Jonathan Karl of ABC News:

You can see why Karl was incredulous when Schultz declared that the Taliban is NOT a terrorist group, but rather an “armed insurgency” group.

Apparently, Mr. Schultz doesn’t recall that just SIX MONTHS AGO, the White House said that the Taliban IS a terrorist organization. From ABC News:

[…] When asked Monday if the White House considered the Taliban terrorists, Press Secretary Jay Carney dodged.

“We don’t get to choose our enemies when we go to war,” Carney told reporters. “We regard the Taliban as an enemy combatant in a conflict that has been going on, in which the United States has been involved for more than a decade. In this case–as you know we dealt with the Qataris in order to secure [Bergdahl’s] release–it was absolutely the right thing to do.”

But Tuesday White House National Security Council spokesperson Caitlin Hayden noted that the Taliban was added to the list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGT) by executive order in July 2002, even if it is not listed as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) by the State Department. Either designation triggers asset freezes, according to the State Department, though they can differ on other restrictions imposed on the target organization. The Treasury Department told ABC News the Taliban is still on their SDGT list. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

What has happened in the past six months to make Schultz think the Taliban isn’t a terrorist organization? And more importantly, what in the WORLD does a group have to do to be labeled “Terrorist”? I mean really – how many attacks must they launch, how many people must they kill, before they are considered to be “terrorists”?? Check out what happened with the Taliban in just DECEMBER. From Fox News:

[…] Separate insurgent attacks killed two U.S. troops — near the Bagram air base — and a top Afghan court official earlier this month.

And the Taliban staged a shocking and brutal attack on a school in Pakistan days later, killing nearly 150 people, most of them students. In the wake of that attack, Afghan and Pakistani military officials reportedly agreed to forge a new partnership against the Taliban. (Pakistan reportedly plans to execute hundreds of militants, while Afghan forces also have been fighting back — with one Afghan official claiming more than 150 Taliban were killed over 12 days of fighting.)

Though the school massacre occurred in Pakistan, McCain warned last week that the Taliban will inflict “more of these kinds of heinous outrageous attacks” in Afghanistan unless the U.S. leaves a bigger “stabilizing force” behind, and ties the drawdown to conditions on the ground. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

The site Townhall also had a piece on this with more information on the status of the Taliban:

[…] In June of 2014, Obama violated federal law by giving the Taliban five of their commanders held at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in exchange for Bergdahl who the Army is about to charge with desertion. Conservatives believe Obama’s decision to release the Taliban commanders had nothing to do with leaving soldiers behind and everything to do with Obama’s efforts to empty Guantanamo Bay without congressional authorization.

While the State Department does not include Afghanistan’s Taliban on the State Department’s Foreign Terrorist Organization list, Pakistan’s Taliban is on that list. Additionally, a 2002 executive order did designate the Afghanistan Taliban as Specially Designated Global Terrorists, a designation that the Obama administration has not changed to this day and can be used to trigger asset freezes by the United States.

Uh huh. Meanwhile, Townhall also had a video from the Taliban with this description attached to it:

The Taliban on Wednesday released a video showing the handover of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl to U.S. forces in eastern Afghanistan, touting the swap of the American soldier for five Taliban detainees from Guantanamo as a significant achievement for the insurgents. The 17-minute video emailed to media, shows the moment of Bergdahl’s handover. He was freed on Saturday after five years in captivity, and exchanged for the five Taliban Guantanamo detainees who were flown to Qatar, a tiny Gulf Arab country which has served as a mediator in the negotiations for the swap. And there you have it. The Taliban is using the EXCHANGE of Taliban terrorists for (alleged) Deserter Bergdahl as a PROPAGANDA FILM . How discouraging is THAT??

At least now we know how to end terrorism according to this White House: just stop calling terrorists terrorists. *POOF* Gone! That’s all you gotta do. Pretend like they just aren’t there any more, or come up with other names for them that bear no resemblance to who, and WHAT, they really are.

And then you invite them to the State Department, like they did with the Muslim Brotherhood this week…

A reminder that the hearings for Loretta Lynch will continue today and tomorrow with Sharyl Attkisson and Catherine Engelbrecht testifying. Should be interesting!

UPDATE: I am sure you will be glad to know that the official White House Spokesweasel, Josh Earnest, was back today, so surely he will clear up what the Deputy Press guy, Eric Schultz said about the Taliban, right? Uh, yeah, not so much. From the Daily Caller:

[…] KARL: Yesterday it was said that the United States government, that the White House does not consider the Taliban to be a terrorist organization. I’m just wondering how that’s consistent with what I believe is the designation of what the Treasury Department has on its list of specially designated terrorist groups, which clearly lists the Taliban. So, does the administration consider the Taliban a terrorist organization or not?

EARNEST: Jon, the reason that the Taliban is listed on this description that you have put forward here is for two reasons: One is they do carry out tactics that are akin to terrorism. They do pursue terror attacks in an effort to try to advance their agenda and by designating them in the way that you have described does allow the United States to put in place some financial sanctions against the leaders of that organization in a way that’s been beneficial to our ongoing efforts against the Taliban.

What’s also true, Jon, is it is also important to draw a distinction between the Taliban and al Qaida. The Taliban has resorted to terror tactics, but those terror tactics have principally been focused on Afghanistan. Now, the reason we’re concerned about that is because there obviously are a significant numberof American personnel, including American military personnel, in Afghanistan that are in harms way. The Taliban is a very dangerous organization.

KARL: So if I am hearing you correctly you are saying the Taliban engages in “tactics akin to terrorism,” but you don’t actually consider them a terrorist group…

EARNEST: They have a different classification. They have a classification that does allow us to pursue financial sanctions against them that have succeeded in limiting their capability that have been effective and –

KARL: But you don’t call them a terrorist group.

EARNEST: — and that is different than an organization like al Qaida that has much broader global aspirations to carry out acts of violence and acts of terror against Americans and American interests all around the globe. […]

See? They just commit terrorist ACTS, or things that are LIKE terrorism. But c’mon, why would you think that made them terrorists, huh?! Sheesh.

Sigh. That’s the latest from the White House.

Along those lines, the hearing this morning has all kinds of people – Prof. Jonathan Turley, who spoke abt his concern with the unconstitutional behavior of the Executive; Sheriff David Clarke, who spoke abt the hostility of Holder toward law enforcement; and Attkisson’s opening was tremendously disturbing in terms of what the gov’t did to her.
