Blowing The Whistle, And The Knives Come Out *Open Thread*

Perhaps it is because Jon Stewart has announced he is leaving “The Daily Show” that he is being more forceful in some of the things he says. Maybe it is because he fancies himself a journalist, thus including himself in an Obaam-targeted group. Regardless of the reason, Jon Stewart’s recent rant against the Obama Administration’s treatment of certain whistleblowers is spot on (h/t IJ Review):

Isn’t it amazing that this Administration, the most “transparent EVAH” has gone after more journalists than any other in our collective history? It is truly astonishing, though we have certainly seen them go after journalists who report on their activities, like James Rosen and Sharyl Attkisson.

Speaking of Sharyl Attkisson, she had an interview with the man, Rich Weinstein, just a regular old citizen like you and me, who broke the Gruber story all by his lonesome. Here is some of that interview from the Daily Signal:

[…] An investment adviser from Philadelphia, Weinstein says he began researching the Affordable Care Act when his own health insurance was canceled in late 2013.

“When they said, ‘If you like your plan, you can keep your plan,’ I believed that just like everybody else,” says Weinstein.

Using nothing more complicated than Google, Weinstein unearthed a treasure trove of publicly available information, including embarrassing videos starring Jonathan Gruber.

Isn’t that incredible? He just went on Google, and got all of this information. Too bad paid journalists couldn’t be bothered to do that. Speaking of “Transparency,” here is more from the Daily Signal:

[…] Weinstein also discovered videos in which Gruber refers to the intentional lack of transparency in the Affordable Care Act.

“I wish … we could make it all transparent but I’d rather have this law than not,” Gruber says in one excerpt.

In another, he states, “If you had a law in which it said healthy people are gonna pay in, you made [it] explicit that healthy people pay in and sick people get money, it would not have passed. Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage.”

Weinstein spent countless hours scouring the Internet. As he found more videos and information, he became disenchanted with the news media.

“It’s pretty disappointing,” he says. “The media just has not had any, very little intellectual curiosity … all these videos were out there in plain sight.” […]

“Disappointing” is one word for the lack of “intellectual curiosity” by the media. Incompetent, unprofessional, biased, partisan, and superficial are a few others that spring to mind.

But there is another video that Weinstein considers to be the most important in terms of what it revealed. From the Daily Signal:

[…] Weinstein considers what he calls the “Noblis video” to be the most important of the bunch. It shows Gruber speaking at a technical conference sponsored by a company called Noblis on Jan. 18, 2012.

The find is considered so significant, it’s entered as evidence in the U.S. Supreme Court challenge to the Affordable Care Act that justices will hear Wednesday.

In that case, King v. Burwell, the administration argues the Affordable Care Act confers federal assistance—subsidies—to qualified consumers in all 50 states.

Opponents, a majority of the states, argue the law only applies to the 16 states that set up their own health care exchanges to sell insurance under Obamacare.

Gruber has been quoted as calling the challenger’s theory “nutty.” Yet, in the Noblis video, recorded nine months before went live, he agrees with the opposing side. He clearly states that tax subsidies were only meant for states that established exchanges.

“What’s important to remember politically about this is if you’re a state and you don’t set up an exchange, that means your citizens don’t get their tax credits—but your citizens still pay the taxes that support this bill,” says Gruber. “So you’re essentially saying [to] your citizens ‘you’re going to pay all the taxes to help all the other states in the country.’”[…] (Click here to read the rest.)

Astonishing. Just astonishing that it took a private citizen to unearth all of this information, and there is more to the Gruber proclamations than the above. It is appalling that the institution tasked with informing the populace has failed so dramatically in its duty to protect someone they like. As I have said before, that isn’t journalism. That’s propaganda, and that seems to account for much of what we are getting these days.

Heaven help those who speak out against Obama as far as many of these “journalists” are concerned, even if they are Democrats. Check that, ESPECIALLY if they are Democrats as Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) is discovering. Now, many of us knew this was coming, and sure enough, it has. From BizPacReview:

[…] President Obama‘s allies in the media have begun pushing back against U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, the Democratic lawmaker from the president’s home state of Hawaii who has been sharply critical of the White House for its handling of the Islamic State’s campaign of terror.

“Every soldier knows this simple fact: If you don’t know your enemy, you will not be able to defeat him,” Gabbard said recently during an appearance on Fox News. “Our leaders must clearly identify the enemy as Islamist extremists, understand the ideology that is motivating them and attracting new recruits, and focus on defeating that enemy both militarily and ideologically.”

GASP – how DARE she! How dare a combat veteran speak out about the absurd manner by which this Administration is addressing – or rather ISN’T addressing – radical Islamist terrorists!

And now she is on the receiving end of what so many Republicans have faced from the media for speaking the truth:

[…] According to Fox News, popular Hawaii radio talk show host Michael W. Perry said Gabbard committed “a mortal sin” by challenging Obama, and “now the knives are out.” He said that “while Gabbard is correct in her ‘emperor has no clothes’ moment, she may have lost her future seat on Hawaii’s political bench.”

Oahu-based Midweek columnist Bob Jones picked up on that theme by suggesting that Gabbard be challenged in 2016, Fox News reported. Not only that, he even diminished her service as a veteran.

Jones wrote: “I take serious issue when somebody who’s done a little non-fighting time in Iraq, and is not a Middle East or Islamic scholar, claims to know better than our President and Secretary of State how to fathom the motivations of terrorists, or how to refer to them beyond the term that best describes them — terrorists.” […]

And there it is – some desk jockey is criticizing the service of a soldier who went to Iraq TWICE, claiming that her service wasn’t really combat service. As you may recall, this is precisely the same kind of treatment Sen. Joni Ernst got from some desk jockey yahoo.

Remind me again – WHO has a War on Women? And I would add, veterans and the military? Yeah. We know who, don’t we? Ugh.

But one thing about Rep. Gabbard – she doesn’t back down:

[…] “I’m not naïve,” she told Fox News. “It could hurt me politically, but I don’t worry about it because that’s not what I care about. … Our national security and the future of our country is infinitely more important than partisan politics or my personal political future.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Yep, it was only a matter of time before the knives came out, but they may have met their match with this Iraqi combat veteran…

Still, when you see an Administration so hell-bent on punishing whistleblowers, one that sinks to such lows to punish its critics, it is beyond disturbing. Thank heavens, though, that these people continue to speak out even in the face of such adversity. We need more like them, to be sure.

At least that’s what I think. How about you? This is an Open Thread.

Yes, I was watching it. He is amazing.

Hey American citizens you are on your own

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

And no doubt, the media will continue to portray the REPUBLICANS as the ones who are obstructionists. That’s how they roll, and the Dems continue to get away with this kind of behavior. Hell, that is what Reid has done for the past SIX years, and somehow, it is all the Reps’ fault.

      Pathetic. Reid is just pathetic.

Oh, no, oh, I am so, so sorry to hear that, Helen. My heart goes out to you and his family. How very sad, and how sad that the man responsible is not having to take any responsibility for his actions…

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

  12. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Since much of my post is abt the media’s lack of actual journalism, the bombshell that Hillary Clinton broke the law for YEARS using a personal email account to conduct official business is right up there with journalistic malfeasance.
