Bibi Goes To Washington And Democrats Act Like Children *Open Thread*

by

At long last, after much wringing of hands, sniping, griping, and what amounts to toddler foot stomping, by too many Democrats, Prime Minister Benjamin will be speaking before a joint session of Congress. The speech will be at 11:00 am (EST), and can be viewed on a number of news stations including Fox News, and can also be streamed at sites like John Boehner’s site (h/t Legal Insurrection).

Adults will be attending this speech on a critical issue, Iran and its nuclear capabilities. The children, including the US AMBASSADOR TO ISRAEL, Dan Shapiro, will not be attending. I find this appalling. Absolutely appalling. The President, the Vice President, the Secretary of State (who is currently in talks with the terrorist-sponsoring Iran), a number of US Senators (including the constantly touted Elizabeth Faux Cherokee Warren), and a number of US Representatives, have declined to attend. Because there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever in any way shape or form that they care far, far, FAR more about the Party than the Country, or the safety of our primary Middle East ally, Israel. It is unbelievable that they would act this way, and that they have so politicized this speech while trying to act as if it was Republicans who did so. No. There is no doubt who has politicized this speech, and it started at the very top with Obama. Such an insecure, arrogant, pompous, petulant child he is being about this speech from someone whose country is directly in the crosshairs of Iran. Pathetic.

Honestly, I do not understand how Jews continue to vote in a bloc for Democrats, but they do. There is one lone Jewish Republican Representative, Lee Zeldin (R-NY), and he has this to say about this speech from the Daily Signal:

[…] “The Israeli prime minister, whoever that person is, should have an open invitation to come to America to speak to Congress and the American people,” said Zeldin, 35. “I want all my colleagues to attend and to embrace the prime minister’s visit and to listen to his important thoughts on the best way not only to strengthen the relationship between American and Israel, but to ensure we don’t negotiate a bad deal with Iran just to negotiate a deal.”

With some Jewish Democrats skeptical of House Speaker John Boehner’s unilateral invitation to Netanyahu to address Congress — believing the move was more partisan than productive — Zeldin reaffirmed his support for Israel’s political leaders, whoever they are.

He says that being the only Jewish Republican in Congress provides a platform for him to promote better “policy” with Israel, and he hopes Netanyahu’s speech does not overshadow the importance of the allies’ relationship.

“If I happen to be the only Jewish Republican, and I am as a result able to advocate for a stronger, more consistent foreign policy that helps keep my constituents safe and helps protect the freedoms and liberties of my nation, then I welcome that,” Zeldin said. […] (Click here to read the rest of the interview.)

And THAT should be the attitude of ALL elected officials to our Congress, to want to advocate for a stronger foreign policy and not capitulate to a country like Iran that has a HORRIBLE track record when it comes to the United States, Israel, human rights, and sponsoring terrorism. WHY we are so hell bent on working with them rather than working with our ally in the Middle East? Heck, even the STATE DEPARTMENT claimed this:

The United States says Iran remains the world’s biggest state-sponsor of terrorism. The annual U.S. report on global terrorism expresses concern about increasing attacks in Nigeria and Pakistan.

U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Counterterrorism Daniel Benjamin said the international community is increasingly alert to Iranian threats and is working to disrupt them.

“We are deeply concerned about Iran’s activities on its own through the IRGC Quds Force, and also together with Hezbollah as they pursue destabilizing activities around the globe,” said Benjamin. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

So of course, let’s cave to them rather than stand with Israel. Good thinking, Democrats. WOW.

I want to turn to Netanyahu’s speech, and what to look for in it (h/t Robin). From the Jerusalem Journal:

Don’t let anyone tell you that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech in the U.S. Congress on Tuesday is not important, or, as President Barack Obama put it on Monday, a “distraction.” It’s hardly that. It’s more like a piece of history.

First, as the hour approaches, we’re seeing a little momentum shift towards the speech. This is, partly, a function of our American Super Bowl mentality, where any high-profile event draws attention, no matter the event. As Seth Lipsky wrote in Haaretz, “What is coming into focus is the fact that Congress and millions of Americans are eager to hear what Netanyahu has to say.”

Second, just as in real estate, the significance of Tuesday’s speech is location, location, location. Bibi will be making his case in a sanctuary of global power, face to face with legislators who hold the power of sanctions in their hands. President Obama can suspend sanctions against Iran temporarily, but only Congress can repeal them or enact new ones.

Third, with the negotiations in their final leg, Bibi will have the chance to plant some important seeds. The murmurs I picked up in the corridors of the AIPAC conference is that “God will be in the details.” In other words, the emotional clichés won’t be enough. To punch holes in the current approach and dramatize what he considers a “bad deal,” Bibi will need to get specific. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

It is an important speech, no matter how much Obama and other Democrats poo-pooh it. If Obama can have the PM of England strong arm Senators, the House sure as hell can have the PM of Israel come speak about something that directly affects his nation, and the world.

I look forward to what Netanyahu has to say, and I bet you do, too. Hopefully, his words will penetrate the thick skulls of those too close-minded and intolerant to attend in person.

Feel free to discuss that speech and more in the Comments below. This is an Open Thread.

    shame of the democrats

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address a joint session of Congress on Tuesday regarding the dangers of nuclear talks with Iran, but more than 50 Democrats in Congress have decided to boycott his speech.

The number of Democratic members of Congress who announced they would be skipping the speech continued to grow as Tuesday approached, with a running count by the Hill putting the number at 55.

A majority of those boycotting Netanyahu’s speech, including six of the seven senators who will not be attending, have received endorsements from radical anti-Israel group J Street, which has launched an aggressive media campaign against the speech.

J Street sent a letter to members of Congress calling for the speech to be postponed until after Israel’s elections. It also purchased a full-page newspaper ad in the New York Times.

Many of the members who are part of the speech boycott have received support from J Street.

Nearly all the senators boycotting the speech—including Tim Kaine, Brian Schatz, Al Franken, Bernie Sanders, Martin Heinrich, and Sheldon Whitehouse—have received endorsements from J Street. A large number of House members who are part of the boycott are J Street-endorsed as well.

The Anti-Defamation League has called J Street’s fight against Netanyahu’s speech “inflammatory and repugnant.”

A full list of congressmen not attending the speech can be found below.

Well, that sure makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it? That these Dems are getting money from anti-Israel groups says it all abt them. That is just deplorable.

Yes, they should be ashamed, but do they have the capacity to do so??

    Sarah

Today, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address a joint meeting of our Congress. You’d think the Obama administration would welcome the insights of the leader of our closest ally in the Middle East. But President Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden, and Secretary of State John Kerry have refused to attend. In fact, no member of the Obama administration is expected to attend.

This is a shocking insult to our ally, and it all boils down to the Obama administration’s refusal to understand the danger of a nuclear Iran.

All of the Obama administration’s many failures in the Middle East – from the descent of Libya into a terrorist playground to the rise of ISIS – pale in comparison to the farce unfolding in Iran. The Obama administration is negotiating with the Iranian regime as it builds a nuclear bomb right under our noses.

Just recently we found out about another “secret” undisclosed nuclear site, one Iran failed to disclose to our negotiators. At this point, the Obama administration’s eagerness to strike a deal with a regime that has armed militants who killed American troops and has sworn to destroy Israel is one of the most dangerous developments of my lifetime.

America has to wake up. We swore “never again” would we allow anyone to try to wipe out the Jewish people or commit mass genocide like we saw during World War II, and yet we’re allowing a regime that promises genocide to acquire nukes.

This is why I urge you all to express your support for Prime Minister Netanyahu, who is right now speaking as the leader of the free world in addressing this existential threat of a nuclear Iran. Please tweet and share this post and use the hashtag ‪#‎StandWithBibi‬

Let our friends in Israel know we stand with them!

I was stunned by Leader Pelosi’s conduct today at Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech. This Facebook post in not about whether you should agree or not agree with the Prime Minister or whether he should give a speech or not — this is about how one should behave when one is a leader and makes the decision to attend the speech.

I went to the speech and, from my seat in the press balcony, I had a direct line of vision to Leader Pelosi for the entire speech.

Her behavior was so obvious that it was hard to take your eyes off her. She was rude…very rude.

For example, when others (BOTH Republicans and Democrats) stood and clapped, she was about the last to stand and then when she did stand, she turned her back on the Prime Minister and spoke to the person behind her. It was obvious what she was doing and what message she was sending. This happened multiple times. I am not saying she had to stand and clap even when her fellow Democrats were — but if she was going to stand, she should not have demonstrated her disdain by turning her back.

I realize this is politics and politics are different than the law, but if you acted like this in the courtroom, a judge would hold you in contempt.

By the way, she was the only one I saw doing anything remotely like this — the other Democrats were polite and clapping, maybe not enthusiastically clapping, but dignified and polite to the Prime Minister.

I know Leader Pelosi is furious that the Prime MInister spoke today (she has made that plain) but she should have stayed in her office instead of attending the speech and showing such disdain for a Head of State of an ally in such a public way. As a Leader in the House of Representatives, she does represent all of us.

And yes, people can have very different and very strong views — these are tough issues and serious times – but , when you are a leader representing others at a public forum with a Head of State from an ally, either be polite or just don’t go. Her behavior was juvenile. She should have skipped it.

Note that she issued a statement after the speech and here it is is:

    ————–

Pelosi Statement on Prime Minister Netanyahu’s Address to Congress

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the Joint Meeting of Congress:

“The unbreakable bonds between the United States and Israel are rooted in our shared values, our common ideals and mutual interests. Ours is a deep and abiding friendship that will always reach beyond party. Americans stand shoulder to shoulder with the Israeli people. The state of Israel stands as the greatest political achievement of the 20th century, and the United States will always have an unshakable commitment to Israel’s security.

“That is why, as one who values the U.S. – Israel relationship, and loves Israel, I was near tears throughout the Prime Minister’s speech – saddened by the insult to the intelligence of the United States as part of the P5 +1 nations, and saddened by the condescension toward our knowledge of the threat posed by Iran and our broader commitment to preventing nuclear proliferation.

“Today, Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated something we all agree upon: a nuclear armed Iran is unacceptable to both our countries. We have all said that a bad deal is worse than no deal, and stopping the spread of nuclear weapons is the bedrock of our foreign policy and national security. As President Obama has said consistently, all options are on the table for preventing a nuclear-armed Iran.”
