Cruz’ing Along; Counting The Years; And Choosing Sides *Open Thread*

It’s official: Sen. Ted Cruz is throwing his hat in the ring. He’s the first in a field of likely Republican candidates to do so, and made the announcement at the stroke of midnight as this BizPaxReview article notes:

[…] Not only is Cruz the first major candidate to announce, he also chose to bypass the exploratory committee route being taken by other possible candidates.

Cruz’s announcement “will excite the base in a way we haven’t seen in years,” Amy Kremer, the former head of the Tea Party Express, told the Associated Press on Sunday.

Even making the early announcement, Cruz jumped the gun. He’d been expected to announce Monday during a speech at Liberty University in Virginia. But he alerted Twitter followers Sunday evening to be expecting it to happen earlier. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

As of this writing, Sen. Cruz has not yet spoken at Liberty University, but I imagine it will be a receptive crowd to this announcement.

Speaking of Sen. Cruz, investigative journalist, Sharyl Attkisson, had the following video at a post on how the media is treating three Republicans with ties to the Hispanic Community:

Gee, the media took things out of context and ran with it? How unusual for them! Ahem. Right. More like par for the course, if you ask me. The constant attempts to demonize Republicans and failing to do the minimum responsibility for any journalist speaks volumes. Typical. Just typical. Can’t wait to see how they deal with the upcoming announcement by Sen. Cruz of throwing his hat in the ring. Should be a doozy.

And speaking of doozies, it is not the 5th anniversary of Obamacare. Oh, yippee. Let’s look at just a few of the outcomes from this disastrous law. First up, the number of rural hospitals that have closed as a result of this law:

[…] Citing the National Rural Health Association, which represents 2,000 small hospitals around the nation, the Post reports that 48 rural hospitals have closed since 2010, most in Southern states, with 10 closing in Texas. Some 283 more hospitals are in danger of closing.

While there are other contributing factors than the Affordable Care Act, declining federal reimbursements for hospitals is the main reason for the slew of closings. Medicare payments to hospitals have also been reduced, as have payments to hospitals for the uninsured.

The decision to reduce payments was made based on the assumption that states would expand their Medicaid programs, but 23 states have not done so.

That’s just jake. Places that can ill afford to not have hospital services, rural areas in which doctors are not readily available otherwise, will have a big impact on those who live in those areas.

But that is not the only outcome at which we can look on this fifth anniversary of Obaamcare. Premiums have skyrocketed under this law:

[…] Premiums Spike Under Obamacare: Studies show the healthcare law increased individual market premiums by almost 50 percent in 2014 relative to 2013 prices. On top of the substantial increase in 2014, there was an average increase of about 4 percent in 2015 for benchmark plans. Even more, a recent report by Avalere Health found the most popular exchange plans increased premiums by 10 percent on average in 2015.

Premiums Have Grown Faster Under Obamacare: A recent report by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that in 2014 premiums in the non-group health insurance market grew by 24.4 percent on average compared to what they would have been without Obamacare.

Premiums Will Continue to Skyrocket Under Obamacare: According to Congress’s nonpartisan budget scorekeeper, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), premiums will increase by about six percent per year. This increase will be driven by a number of factors, including high demand for expensive medical care, higher provider rates as enrollment increases, uncertainty created by haphazard regulatory changes under Obamacare, and the failure of the plans to attract enough “young invincibles.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

I know our have sure gone up. But that isn’t all. Deductibles have also risen dramatically under this new law:

[…] The law’s success is even more ambiguous when it comes to reining in costs across the sector. Increasingly, patients and providers are being asked to take on more responsibility.

For patients, this comes through higher deductibles and other cost-sharing tools. Providers are also under pressure to cut costs and improve outcomes through payments based on value and a patient’s health. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

That is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many more issues as a result of this law, some of which you can read about here. The bottom line is that it has had a major impact on many of us, cost us much more, provided less, and impacted us in ways that are therapeutically unhelpful, to put it mildly.

Kinda makes you wonder just whose side the Democrats are on by forcing this law on us for a relatively small fraction of Americans, especially since there were STILL be more uninsured Americans than those who got coverage under this plan.

And that brings me to whose side Obama is on. That is the question asked of President Obama by Judge Jeanine Pirro in her Opening on Saturday night in terms of Obama’s headstrong attempts to get any kid of deal with Iran:

She said it. Whose side IS Obama on? Especially when you look at the Tweets sent out by the Grand Poobah of Iran, Khomeini, in response to Obama’s video address the other day. Why is this President throwing our friend and ally, Israel, under the bus to have a relationship with “Death to America!” Iran? It simply makes no sense, at least not to me.

How about you? Feel free to comment on any of the above, or whatever else is on your minds today. This is an Open Thread.

Morning Foxy. How are you doing? We got about 3-4 inches of Global Warming last night and this morning. Winter just doesn’t want to let go.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Good morning, friends (almost noon where I am). Ugh abt the snow, Marge. We have rain, and it is cool for us (55), but I am not complaining. It is keeping all the green pollen from taking over the porch/breezeway, so no need to sweep 3x a day out there! 🙂

      Y’all stay safe and warm!

Good Morning Keno, Foxy, Helen, and of Course Amy..(If I missed You I apologize.

I like Ted Cruz very much. I think he’s twice as smart as Obama ever thought of being and 3 times the speaker. But… and its a big but, the media has successfully managed to demonize him to the point that I believe he has zero chance of getting elected.

If the GOP wants Hillary to be president then all they need do is nominate Jeb Bush, hiss boo, or sadly Ted Cruz. True or not they have managed to make Cruz, one Jr. Senator, at fault for the shut down of the government. Doesn’t matter that it isn’t true. It is the perception and that’s enough.

I also would like to see Senators like Cruz and others of his generation remain in the Senate to counteract the establishment types that should have retired years ago.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I like him, too, Marge. He is VERY smart, a fact emphasized by none other than Alan Dershowitz:

Frankly, I am sick to death of the media essentially dictating elections. They have done it with the past two, and look what we have as a result. We cannot continue to allow them to dictate who wins, or even who has a chance of succeeding. It is just infuriating to me to see how they attack people like Cruz, or Palin, or ANYONE who highlights how flawed are the programs put forth by the Dems. Just sick of it.

All that said, it would take a miracle for Cruz to overcome the baseless reporting they are already doing on him.

And good point abt those folks in office for so long – yikes!

This is such a great story. I saw this woman on Fox and Friends this morning. She got all choked up talking abt the police officer involved:

    • kinthenorthwest Says:

      Wow what a story…What a woman..what an officer and what a son..
      Great story Amy.

  9. kinthenorthwest Says:

Good Piece Amy… Cruz seems to have e on the outs with many Conservatives today. The same argument many conservatives were saying made Obama ineligible apply to Cruz, yet now they seem to be trying to change it. H3LL some are even say that since Obama skirted the constitution whats the difference.
Obama’s mother was an America just like Cruz’s mother. Obama’s father was never an American, but Cruz’s father didn’t become an American until 2005.To top it off Cruz did not renounce his Dual citzenship until last year..
All I know is Jeb is a BIG NO for me..and that Cruz has birth issues.
Walker right now seems to be the best as far as I am concerned…
I do believe that Obama has done nothing to help America and Americans. Scary but I do believe that Obama and his people are trying to destroy America, especially morally and financially.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks, Kin. And you raise a great point abt the whole citizenship thing. Cruz was actually born in Canada. I would think that, along with having dual citizenship, would exclude him from running. I do seem to recall the dual citizenship thing for Obama (Indonesia) was considered a problem by those who were not blinded by his majesty (sarc). It does seem a bit hypocritical unless the law is clear that this is permissible.

I do like Cruz, but even at the time of his renouncing his dual citizenship, I thought that whole thing was problematic.

      • kinthenorthwest Says:

        Its going to be interesting..
there are those that are saying “well Obama did it, so what” and those who are interpreting it in so many different ways.(I know I have seen at least a 1/2 dozen different ways today.)
Most are saying that all you need is one parent that is American no matter where the baby is born. And some that are saying that Anne Dunham was not American long enough…
Like I said if its Wrong for one its Wrong for all.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Just got this from Western Journalism on this very issue:
But as Vox reporter Dara Lind points out, Cruz’s mother, Eleanor Darragh, was an American citizen from Delaware, while his father, Rafael, was a Cuban national who obtained a green card while living in the U.S. Rafael became a citizen himself ten years ago.

By virtue of Cruz’s mother physically living in the U.S. for more than five years and more than two after her 14th birthday, his citizenship is not debatable – Cruz is definitely an American citizen. However, the question is if he a “natural born” citizen as stipulated in the U.S. Constitution. Here is the relevant text from Article II, Section 1:No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty five years, and been fourteen Years a resident within the United States.

Cruz’s case is not unique. His colleague in the U.S. Senate, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., ran into a similar issue when he ran for president in 2008 because he was born in the Panama Canal Zone.

During the 2008 campaign, the Senate passed a resolution affirming McCain’s status as a natural born citizen. Then Sens. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., who were in the middle of a tough campaign against each other for the Democratic nomination, sponsored the measure.

Lind also noted that McCain faced a lawsuit from New Hampshire resident John Hollander, who voted against the Arizona Senator during the state’s primary–asserting his eligibility. The suit went nowhere after it was dismissed later that summer. Her conclusion: The moral of the story: it’s pretty darn clear that Ted Cruz is eligible to run for president. At the same time, that doesn’t mean that no one in this country of 300 million Americans will be crazy enough to say he isn’t.

And there you have it. The reason why he CAN run. Good to know! 🙂

Oh, I might add, the thing abt McCain was a non-starter because, as I understand it, he was on a military base. That’s totally different.

        Anyway – now I know!

        • kinthenorthwest Says:

The reason McCain was eligible was due to his father’s military. It was said that American Diplomats overseas were exempt, including military.
Don’t you find it interesting that it was the Tea Party that was all over the BC Issue and Cruz is the Tea Party’s baby. It was the Tea Party who said that if Obama was born in Kenya he was ineligible. Several times a week it was all over the Tea Party blogs with or trying to prove that Obama was born in Kenya. The posts were usually by one of the top Tea Party people too. I unsubscribed a couple of years ago, cause it was just too much. When I unsubscribed the BC was still a hot Tea Party topic then, usually more than once a week

Many are now claiming that Obama’s mother was only 18 and thus did not have the 5 years after her 14th birthday required to confer citizenship on Obama.

This is going to be one weird issue.
Hannity is interviewing Cruz tonight and did ask about the issue. Strange that Hannity was a Birther too.
Sorry but if its wrong then for Obama, its wrong now for Cruz..

          • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Right – that is what I was saying, that since McCain’s father was in the military, he was considered to be born on US soil.

Oh, it wasn’t just the Tea Party that was claiming that. It was a huge deal with Obama, not just where he was born, but that he had dual citizenship with Indonesia. There were a lot of sites, not all Republican, that thought it was a conflict with the Constitution. I remember we discussed this at length at NQ.

But, from everything I have seen today, it is a non-issue with Cruz from the get-go, to people just need to let it go..

        • kenoshamarge Says:

And when has the truth, or facts, ever mattered to the left, the lefty media or anyone who wants to smear Cruz?

          • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yeah, well, there is that. This Politics of Destruction, particularly of who one is, not what one has done (ad hominem attacks), is just staggering. And that’s by the MEDIA…

  10. HELENK3 Says:

Peter King (another one who has stayed too long at the fair) attacks Ted Cruz

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Ohmygosh – when is Peter King going to stop talking? And HE is sure one to call someone else a “carnival barker.” Cruz is WAY smarter and more articulate than King is. Hmm. Maybe THAT is King’s problem, come to think of it…

  11. kinthenorthwest Says:

I almost feel like our country is in the twilght zone lately..
Did not expect to see something like this, much less coming out of Texas.(Snippet below).
Muslims Demand Texas Mayor Surrender After She Attacked Shariah Court… Here’s Her Response
The group of Muslims who attempted to establish the first Islamic Sharia court inside the United States in the town of Irving, Texas just received a devastating blow thanks to the town’s mayor standing strong and not backing down.

Mayor Beth Van Duyne made a public Facebook post stating that she backs the new Texas law which prohibits any kind of foreign law from being practiced in the state of Texas.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thank heavens the mayor stood tall, but why did she even have to do so?? This is just nuts. And this should not be happening in the USA.

      • kinthenorthwest Says:

Every time someone in the US has to fight having Sharia Law I ask that same question Amy.
Seems that I have to ask that question too often lately…I think there are at least 1/2 dozen times in the last year or two. It should NEVER be an issue in the US..

  12. kenoshamarge Says:

Thomas Sowell makes a good point. As usual. And while I am not an O’Reilly fan, in fact regard him as a big bag of hot air most of the time, in this instance I admire the fact that he stuck to his questions and didn’t allow the Dems to slither away as they so often do. Just answer the question guys, it’s really a simple one and should be easy. If she had ever actually accomplished anything at all.

    A Simple Question

It is amazing how a simple question can cause a complex lie to collapse like a house of cards. The simple question was asked by Bill O’Reilly of the Fox News Channel, and it was addressed to two Democrats. He asked what has Hillary Clinton ever accomplished.

The two Democrats immediately sidestepped the question and started reciting their talking points in favor of Hillary. But O’Reilly kept coming back to the fact that nothing they were talking about was an accomplishment.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I feel the same way abt Bill, only watch him if I happen across the channel and he has someone I like on. I can’t take him for too long. Anyway, good for him for asking the question, and it is a GOOD one. It should be an EASY one to answer, shouldn’t it? Seriously – if you ask abt, say, Sarah Palin’s accomplishments while in office, they come tripping off the tongue.

I think Carly Fiorina has a great talking point when she says she traveled a bunch too, but she ACCOMPLISHED something…

      • kenoshamarge Says:

There are a lot of accomplished people who could help this nation. Obama, a first term Senator who’s only accomplishment seems to have been being the first “African American” president and Hillary, who has no real accomplishments either, but wants to be historic in being the first “Female” president.

I’m a little picky and don’t think either race or gender is a qualification. Accomplishments, integrity, and competence top my list no matter the color of skin or the gender. Anything else is, IMHO, just plain silly.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, you said it, Marge. Those aren’t “accomplishments,” they just ARE. Absolutely ridiculous “qualifiers” to determine is one is able to do the job.

Meanwhile, Whoopi Goldberg made a comment abt Cruz that would get her in deep water if she was on the other side:

Heck, didn’t a Republican get attacked the other day for referencing that Obama’s mother was white, that he was raised by her and his white grandparents, not his black side? And why? Doesn’t fit their narrative, ergo, it is RACIST.

But then Whoopi can make an ignorant statement like that. UGH.

    • kinthenorthwest Says:

Don’t Like Bill either, but sounds like he was doing his job this time..
I do believe that we will have Hillary at least in the Democratic primary in 2016. How far she will go remains to be seen.

  13. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It’s all in how they word it. Daily Signal has a more ACCURATE assessment of the numbers who got Obamacare (hint: still too small to have disrupted our entire health care system):
