We Have Become The Bullies We Once Deplored *Open Thread*

by

The raging inferno that seems to be the new MO of the Left continues to rage over the rights of religious people to be religious. Apparently, we really DON’T have freedom of religion in this country any more, at least if some people have their way.

By now, you most likely have heard about the unsuspecting pizza owner in Indiana who was set up by an ABC reporter, and whose responses were twisted around as this PJ Media story highlights (h/t Kenoshamarge). Now, this small business has been forced to shut down as a result of DEATH THREATS. From BizPacReview:

A popular, family-owned restaurant in a small Indiana town is closing its doors after nine years because of hate-filled backlash from the militant LGBT community after making an honest statement.

But the family also finds itself the recipient of nationwide support.

The controversy began when the owner’s daughter told a local TV station Wednesday that although anyone is welcome at Memories Pizza, their family restaurant, their religious beliefs would prevent them from catering a gay wedding.

The station was soliciting opinions of Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

“We’re not discriminating against anyone, that’s just our belief, and anyone has the right to believe in anything,” Crystal O’Connor said, according to Fox News.

How DARE she believe something the Left doesn’t think she should believe? She must be DESTROYED! Her livelihood, too! And so it began, all because she expressed a genuine religious belief that the Left did not accept:

[…] Memories Pizza has had to close its doors and not answer the phone. The owners have no way of telling actual orders from the phony ones.

“It’s really confusing to me,” Kevin O’Conner told Fox News. “I’m just a little guy in a little, tiny town. That’s where I’ve been my whole life.”

He added, “It’s just been ugly. I don’t know what to call it.”

It’s called hate and intolerance. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Yes, it IS hate and intolerance, the VERY THING the Gay Community has fought against for YEARS! And now, we are the ones PERPETRATING it!

What the HELL?? I have been out for over forty years. I have done my fair share of protests and fights for equal rights. But EQUAL RIGHTS means that we are all free to think as we wish, to love whom we wish, and to worship as we wish. Apparently, that is no longer the case in the United States of America, at least not if the radical wing of the Gay community and Leftists have their way. We know this is not the first business that has been shut down because of the outrage of the “progressive,” “tolerant” Left, and sadly, I doubt it will be the last.

But that this is happening at ALL by a community that should KNOW better just boggles my mind. Apparently, Tammy Bruce feels similarly as she expressed this morning on “Fox and Friends”:

Yep, Bruce absolutely nails it. We have become precisely against which we fought for years: BULLIES. It is beyond disturbing to me, especially as a minister and as a member of the gay community.

Not that facts seem to matter to these bullies, but allow Jonah Goldberg’s latest post to impart some facts and history to this discussion:

In 1997, the Supreme Court held that RFRA was too broad and could not be applied to states. So, various state governments passed their own versions. Twenty states have close to the same version as the federal government’s, and a dozen more have similar rules in their constitutions. These states include such anti-gay bastions as Connecticut, Massachusetts and Illinois, where, as a state senator, Barack Obama voted in favor of the law.

The law says nothing about gays and was most famously used to keep the Obama administration from forcing Hobby Lobby and nuns from paying for certain kinds of abortion-inducing birth control.

“This big gay freak-out is purely notional,” according to legal writer Gabriel Malor (who is gay). “No RFRA has ever been used successfully to defend anti-gay discrimination, not in 20 years of RFRAs nationwide.”

[…]

The war for gay rights has been won, and that’s basically fine by me. But there are a few holdouts — most famously devout Christian wedding planners, florists, photographers and bakers — who don’t want to be part of such things. Why a gay couple would want a photographer who is morally opposed to their wedding to snap pictures of it is a mystery to me.

But we live in an age where non-compliance with the left’s agenda must be cast as bigotry. Everyone is free to celebrate as instructed. This is what liberals think liberty means today. (Click here to read the rest.)

It is a mystery to me, too. If someone doesn’t want my business, I simply take it elsewhere, though NO place of business is allowed to discriminate in its daily operations. But going elsewhere does not seem to be enough for the Community these days. Nope, they must DESTROY whomever stands in their way.

That is what I find to be so disturbing and upsetting. And it is completely antithetical to how this nation is SUPPOSED to operate: freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, and freedom of thought. Those seem to be freedoms we are losing if we don’t all walk in lockstep as determined by a radical branch of our country: Bullies. Bullies one and all, and we must not capitulate to bullies or their tactics. That is not who we are.

Or is it?

    Graat post Amy,
It seems to me that there is a war going on, Against Christians. 😡

      Thank you!

And yes, there does seem to be a war on Christians.

At the same time all of this craziness is going on, Al Shabbab is gunning down Christians at a university.

      WOW.

There is something seriously wrong with this man, or rather with the man whom he represents. NO ONE is justifying DISCRIMINATION!! Obama voted for a similar law in IL! SUCH HYPOCRITES!!!!!!!!!

Amen, Rev Amy! I wrote a brief post about this too, but from a different perspective

    https://insanitybytes2.wordpress.com/2015/04/02/misunderestimations/

Not only are we now trying to bully people, something I blame on President Obama’s crappy leadership (get in their faces, they bring a knife, we bring a gun) people are being downright stupid and intellectually lazy about. They don’t even know what they’re raging against!! They haven’t even bothered to research the issue.

It’s like a bunch of rebels without a clue. We have demonized and dehumanized the so called enemy so much that many people have no become exactly what they fought so hard against, for so long. Gay people are actually being bullied by other gay people the moment they step off the plantations, not unlike women recently where within the Dem party. Or blacks who questioned the ideology for that matter.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Great piece you had there, insanity!

I am right there with you in terms of the blame. The support this Administration has given to those who take their self-righteous clueless rebellion (!) to the streets in spite of the FACTS on the ground has most definitely emboldened this kind or ratchet emotional response. That people lose their livelihoods over HYPOTHETICALS is astonishing, and goes to show where we are now. Disturbing, that…

I do not care about anyone else’s sex life. it is not my business and does not involve me.
what bothers me and really brings out the Irish in me is people being forced to do what they do not believe in. You may force someone to do something against their will, but they do not have to do it well. why would you want to do so?

  7. kenoshamarge Says:

Great post Rev! You can speak to this issue as few of us who comment here can.

From my perspective it seems that the Gay Community has been hi-jacked by the left just as the AA community. And it is tearing this country apart.

That part of the left, the radical gal part and the radical AA part has nothing to offer but hate. And many are content with that. They attack, smear, lie and threaten anyone who does not comply. They are the Borg. Except that resistance is NOT futile it is necessary.

I don’t much like the far right but I have to say that the far left, and that includes the groups I mentioned above, seem worse to me. The far right is rigid and bigoted and damn well determined to stay that way. But they will, mostly, leave people alone.

The far left on the other hand seems determined to destroy. Those who allow it, those who are silent about it cannot hide by saying that didn’t participate. Not participating isn’t enough. They must make it clear that they oppose such behavior.

Many insist that “moderate” Muslims must stand up and protest the acts of the murderous members of their community. While the AA and Gays are certainly in no way comparable to terrorists they are in fact terrorizing people for the crime of not agreeing with them and the good decent people in those groups need to make it clear that they do not agree with these scum. • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks so much, Marge. I appreciate that!

And I appreciate your comment, too – I think you are absolutely spot on. It HAS been hijacked by the radical Left. I, for one, greatly resent it. As Tammy Bruce spoke abt (full interview now in the post), back in our day, what we cared abt was being seen as full human beings and citizens, to be able to live our lives like everyone else without fear of reprisal or danger. That was it.

Now it has become this DEMAND that everyone must walk in lockstep, everyone must accept the most radical of ideas, :everyone must do our bidding their own beliefs be damned because they should believe what we are telling them to believe anyway unless they are ignorant yahoos who are too stupid to see how RIGHT we are”, and if they DON’T capitulate to what we want and demand, then we will force them to lose their livelihoods, something we used to fear for our ownselves. It is truly disturbing.

And fight back those of us who are in the reality based community must, otherwise we will lose our freedoms of free speech, thought, and assembly.

Derek Hunter has a good idea…

Make Progressives Live By Their Own Rules

My old neighborhood in Baltimore had five pizza places in fairly close proximity, but one was better than the others, both in price and taste. So, after a night of adult beverages with friends, we’d inevitably end up in one of them, generally the one most convenient to where we were. Sometimes that was the one with the better pizza.

One time we were in there and my friends and I were in a “pizza with bacon” mood, but there was a problem: This place didn’t have bacon as a topping option.

They hadn’t sold out … that wasn’t the issue. The issue was they didn’t offer bacon at all. The place is owned by people who are Muslim, and they don’t offer pork in any form. Their pepperoni is beef, as is their sausage. They didn’t even offer turkey bacon.

We immediately rallied our friends, wrote up protest signs, called the mayor and media, screamed slogans about how my right to the pizza we wanted the way we wanted was being trampled, and filed suit against the place with the help of the ACLU.

Of course we did nothing of the sort. We ordered one with other toppings, and the next time we were out and had a hankering for pizza with bacon, we went to one of the other places.

  9. kenoshamarge Says:

I enjoyed the comments on this “Twitchy” post. I also wonder if actual “Market Forces” come from people criticizing the product at “Memories Pizza” not a comment made by the owner. People are threatening and hating for a place they don’t know and have never, and will never visit. What b.s.!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

You said it, Marge. From what I saw at another article, previous to this highly manipulated ABC “News” report in which the daughter answered a direct question on a HYPOTHETICAL, their reviews had all been very good.

There are a lot of great things abt the internet, but the ability and speed with which people can dump hate on others is not one of them.

Both the gay community and the black community have made great strides towards general acceptance in the last 30 years. I am very glad about this.
as a young child I was taught that racism is stupid. as an adult i believe that someone’s sex life is their own business and does not define them as a person.
the bullying going on now will set back any idea of getting along and working together. that is really one of the saddest things of the whole mess.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Well said Helen! And I couldn’t agree more. My experience and feelings were much the same as yours.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I agree – and right there with y’all.

I fear you are right – this will set things back. People are getting pretty fed up with the Gay Mafia, as they are called. And rightly so, I think. Forcing people out, like the founder of Mozilla for a donation he made in his PRIVATE life that the Gay Mafia found objectionable (for Prop 8 – he was never anything by fair and respectful to gay people who worked at Mozilla) really moved all of this into a new direction. Power is blinding them, I think.

The Real Hate and Bigotry in Indiana

It is tyrannical to compel someone to violate their conscience by force of the state.

The decibel level of Leftist outrage over Indiana’s desire to prevent the persecution of Christians (and those of other religions) there is becoming ear-splitting. As usual, the hysterical cries of “Hate” and “Bigotry” appear to be projection.

As Rush Limbaugh correctly noted recently, the Hoosier State has become the new Ferguson, Missouri, and the lies about the law are starting to exceed “hands up, don’t shoot” heights.

So on fire has the Leftist hair become, that Governor Cuomo of New York has banned “non-essential” travel to that backward benighted state (which raises the questions of what travel to Indiana is ever essential, or why there is so much non-essential government travel going on in New York).

    http://pjmedia.com/blog/the-real-hate-and-bigotry-in-indiana/#ixzz3WFHboaSZ

It always amazes me that Governors of states with so many problems of their own find the time, energy and chutzpah to stick their noses into the problems in other states. Simply looking for votes? Trying to get people’s minds off the problems they face at home? Corruption is rampant in New York and had been for years. Do they think that by turning the dreadful bakeries of Indiana into the boogeyman people will forget the problems in NY? Only the foolish.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I hate when I agree with Rush, but he has been right abt this. It is truly disturbing to see how the Left is acting,a nd how they are somehow having the upper hand with their vitriolic behavior and language. I just do not get it. How in the hell did we get to this place?!

And no kidding abt these other governors, like the CT governor, who is a HUGE hypocrite. But no one is calling out these leaders and business owners for the massive hypocrites they are in the MSM that I have seen. Only those of us at these blogs or on Fox.

But what really gets me is how people who previously feared losing their jobs or their homes If people knew they were gay now REJOICE in driving people out of their businesses, bankrupting them, issuing death threats to them.

How did we get here, and how the hell do we get out of this?
