Well, Too Late For That, Mr. President *Open Thread*

That would be a “Weakened Israel” under Obama’s watch. Well, I guess Israel isn’t so much weakened as more open to threats from enemies like Iran and Hamas. But that might just be splitting hairs.

In any event, Obama made this statement on Saturday, as the Times of Israel reported (h/t Facebook friend):

US President Barack Obama said it would be a “moral” failure for his administration if Israel was weakened as a result of his policies. “I would consider it a failure on my part, a fundamental failure of my presidency, if on my watch or as a consequence of work that I’ve done, Israel was rendered more vulnerable,” Obama said in an interview conducted Saturday and published Sunday with veteran New York Times journalist Thomas Friedman.

He said he would consider it “not just a strategic failure, I think that would be a moral failure,” adding that no disagreements between Israel and the United States could break the two countries’ bond.

Obama also said that accusations that his administration is not doing all it can to ensure Israel’s security have made recent months a “hard period” for him personally.

“It has been personally difficult for me to hear… expressions that somehow… this administration has not done everything it could to look out for Israel’s interest — and the suggestion that when we have very serious policy differences, that that’s not in the context of a deep and abiding friendship and concern and understanding of the threats that the Jewish people have faced historically and continue to face,” he said. Uh huh Mr. President – all those accusations about how crappy you have made things for Israel are COMPLETELY baseless. Not.

Take, for instance, how Iran is now helping HAMAS more blatantly since your big ol’ nuclear deal. From the Telegraph:

Iran has sent Hamas’s military wing tens of millions of dollars to help it rebuild the network of tunnels in Gaza destroyed by Israel’s invasion last summer, intelligence sources have told The Sunday Telegraph.

It is also funding new missile supplies to replenish stocks used to bombard residential neighbourhoods in Israel during the war, code-named Operation Protective Edge by Israel.

The renewed funding is a sign that the two old allies are putting behind them a rift caused by the conflict in Syria, where Shia Iran is backing President Bashar al-Assad against Hamas’s mainly Sunni allies.

Iran has sponsored Hamas’s military operations for years, despite the contradiction that Hamas is part of the worldwide, Sunni-supremacist Muslim Brotherhood, while Iran is Shia. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

I mean, really – how could this be at all bad for Israel, huh, Mr. President?!

Perhaps Obama should have paid just a little attention to Prime Minister when he kept warning us about making our bed with Iran. And perhaps everyone should be paying attention now that PM Netanyahu said we need better deal with Iran. Just a thought. Maybe that would be a good Passover acknowledgement, huh?

All that is to say, Mr. President, your words on Israel are not matching your actions on Israel, no matter how much you try to tell us up is down. We know the difference.

Obama’s mealy-mouthed insistence that he has only the best in mind for Israel is not matched by his actions. Not his treatment of Israel’s Prime Minister.

It is also unbelievable that Obama insists that he knows more about what is best for Israel than Israel does.

I remember reading in one of the “Gothic Romance” novels by Georgette Heyer that I was once addicted to a line by a preposterously arrogant man to a woman he was courting, “allow me to know you better than you know yourself”. That’s the kind of line I’ve come to expect from Obama. I thought we moved on from that kind of rhetoric a very long time ago.

    Progressives? I think not!

No, indeed – Obama is adept at talking out of abt 100 different sides of his mouth. I know people assume politicians lie, but Obama has elevated it to a WHOLE new art form.

And you are right – that added to his paternalism gives us what we have now, and it ain’t good…

Roger Simon explains Obama’s “nuke” deal with Iran for those of us who are somewhat confused. The one thing I am NOT confused about is my distrust of Obama and Kerry together. I trust them as far as I could throw the two of them.

Munich, Anyone? Obama’s Iran Agreement in Translation

What we have here is not “a failure to communicate,” but Obama’s moral narcissism gone berserk. Forget his former proclaimed views on Iran. Driven by his need for legacy and his conviction that “he knows best” about world peace, the future, whatever, he has reversed course and powered through to what he thinks, or wants us to think, is the framework for a deal that would prevent Iran from fabricating nuclear weapons. Only — as in Gertrude Stein’s Oakland and Amir Taheri’s translations — there’s no there there.

But never mind. His troops seem to be rallying. Democrats who were initially skeptical are apparently folding in and Senator Menendez, Obama’s greatest thorn on the Democratic side, is currently and conveniently being hounded out of office and possibly into prison.

Meanwhile, Dianne Feinstein — whose greatest worry is making sure her and her husband’s hundreds of millions are kept legally separate — is telling Benjamin Netanyahu — whose greatest worry is a second Holocaust – to “contain himself.”

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Well, that sure didn’t take long for the Dems to fall in line, did it? What does it take for those folks to actually have a SPINE???Truly deplorable. I am disgusted with them over this and so much more.

And Feinstein’s comment goes to show just how much damage Obama has already done to Israel. He has no plans to stop that despite his lying words to the NY Times…

    great piece Amy—
My only comment is Obama at least told the truth on one item in 2008–Obama did promise Change and Damn Obama has changed America so much that I’m now looking for the yellow brick road. “Here Toto, Here Toto”

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks, Kin – and yes, Obama did tell the truth abt that. He also told the truth abt making our electric bills go sky high. UGH.

      • kinthenorthwest Says:

saw my electric bill just a week ago and did the happy dance thinking about your bill…
See there was some good in that but ugh for just one month OUCH OUCHIE

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

LOL, well, glad it enabled you to do a happy dance! At least it was abt half that for this past month, but there were days when we didn’t have the HVAC running at all, so yeah, it should have been less. But since Obama has been in, it has gone up steadily, then drastically…

Jonah sorts things out so that they are understandable. Too bad the “news” doesn’t bother to do that.

Goldberg: Iran nuke deal, no deal at all

The first thing one needs to know about the nuclear deal with Iran is that it is not, in fact, a deal. You might be confused about this point, given that so many news outlets refers to a “deal” that doesn’t exist.

In fairness, many do so simply for expediency’s sake. The various parties to the talks did come away with an agreement, but it was an agreement to haggle more about what a deal might look like. We don’t have a good word for such things, so people use “deal” as a placeholder.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Another brilliant piece by Goldberg – thanks so much for this, Marge. He hits the nail on the head.

      Great cartoon, too!

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I cannot remember a Jonah Goldberg article that wasn’t informing, witty and well done. Unlike so many who are touted as “brilliant”, I believe that Jonah really is. In a battle of wits with Obama Jonah, supposedly “brilliant”, Jonah wouldn’t need to bring 1/4 of his weapons.

Another favorite of mine, Thomas Sowell, described Obama’s “deal” this way:

By abandoning virtually all its demands for serious restrictions on Iran’s nuclear bomb program, the Obama administration has apparently achieved the semblance of a preliminary introduction to the beginning of a tentative framework for a possible hope of an eventual agreement with Iran.

But even this hazy “achievement” may vanish like a mirage. It takes two to agree — and Iran has already publicly disputed and even mocked what President Obama says is the nature of that framework.

  8. kenoshamarge Says:

I suspect, as do many much smarter than I, that one of the results of this “deal”, that isn’t a deal, will be…

Branco had another “brilliant” cartoon skewering both HRC and the media today:
