This Explains SO Much About How We Vote, Hearing One Note *Open Thread*

by

Now that we have candidates on both sides of the aisle declaring their intentions to run for President, this piece from IJ Review seems timely indeed.

The article highlights one study in particular on how people vote, what drives them to one side of the aisle or another. As a student of people, I found this fascinating. From IJ Review:

[…] A social psychologist named Jonathan Haidt has spent the bulk of his career trying to figure out what motivates both conservatives and liberals. He’s uncovered some interesting points, which have been published in a book called “The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion.”

According to Haidt’s research, there are five things people care about:

  1. avoidance of harm
  2. fairness
  3. loyalty
  4. authority
  5. sanctity

Conservatives care about all five in equal measure and liberals care about only the first two. Here is a quote from the book, as transcribed by The American Conservative:

“It’s as though conservatives can hear five octaves of music, but liberals respond to just two, within which they have become particularly discerning.”

What a good comparison that is, octaves in music. Not everyone can hear five octaves. Heck, most people can’t sing a range like that, either. Just look at Bruce Springsteen – he has made a whole career out of singing MAYBE one octave. Go figure.

There is more from IJ Review:

[…] There is also a sixth term, which both sides care about in equal measure: liberty. However, conservatives and liberals see the word as meaning two completely different things, according to the author.

Conservatives tend to view liberty as the notion of being left alone to pursue happiness in whatever way they choose. Liberals tend to view it as the act of creating a level playing field for society’s most vulnerable individuals.

Fascinating distinction about liberty, isn’t it? And I know that people often change as we grow older. At this point in my life now, I cannot BELIEVE some of the things I believed in and did when I was in college and seminary. Live and learn, I reckon. Life experience has a way of revealing the limitations of hearing only two octaves, no matter HOW defined they are.

These finds are not limited to just this one study, as the article continues:

[…] There have been dozens of studies that produced similar findings, concluding that conservatives and liberals are different, even apart from their political leanings.

A scientist named John Jost recently published a paper on the subject:

“There is by now evidence from a variety of laboratories around the world using a variety of methodological techniques leading to the virtually inescapable conclusion that the cognitive-motivational styles of leftists and rightists are quite different.”

[…] (Click here to read the rest.)

And there you have it. It is apparently how we are wired. Some of us hear all five octaves, or four, or three, and some just hear two.

Or in the case of Obama, just one octave is heard as he has demonstrated through his “negotiating” tactics. Just today, we are hearing that Obama has UNILATERALLY (again) removed the “Terrorism Sponsor” rating of Cuba. Yep. He sure enough did. Among the other major problem negotiations he has made as The Federalist highlights:

[…] 1) The Iran framework we have right now finds the president accepting Iran as a nuclear threshold power with all the equipment, stockpiles, and secrecy it insists upon in exchange for repealing all sanctions and a more-or-less free hand in the Middle East. This is a significant climb-down from his demand three years ago that Iran not enrich, keep no stockpiles, and hide nothing. So, what did the president actually get? He fulfilled his desire to try to prove that extending the hand of friendship to the United States’ greatest enemy will bring peace to the Middle East and increase our security.

2) The missile defense system for Eastern Europe is not so much an agreement but an extension of Obama’s failed reset with Russia along with a further attempt to woo Iran. Ignoring evidence and arguing implicitly that neither the Russians nor the Iranians were threats to us regarding missiles, Obama delighted them both by balking on installing the defense shield for our allies that his predecessor had arranged. Today, Russia and Iran are on the march, and Russia has announced it will actually be the one extending missile defense capabilities—to Iran. So what did the president actually get? He fulfilled his desire to try prove that U.S. defenses are actually threats to other states.

3) The climate deal with China traded mandates on the U.S. economy to drastically reduce emissions for mere Chinese promises to curb the growth of their emissions—promises from an authoritarian government that can’t stay in power unless it maximizes the use of fossil fuels. So, what did the president actually get? He fulfilled his desire to be the most forwarding-leaning president ever on left-wing environmental issues.

Those are bad enough, but then there is that whole Cuba thing I mentioned:

[…] Cuba has been trading with most of the world (at least, with those countries to which it has actually paid what it owed) and that has not improved its economy. It receives plenty of tourists and other visitors from around the world, and that has not improved its politics. Add to that the fact that the United States actually does do several hundred million dollars in legal trade with Cuba annually (in agriculture, in particular) and lots of Americans legally visit—with no improvement in the tyrannical government or the destitute economy.

In the negotiation between the United States and Cuba over the new policy, Cuba demanded, among other things: to be taken off the terrorist list; to have normal relations and embassies reopened; to be allowed normal commercial relations. That is, to be treated like any other country. And they are getting it.

What did the Unites States demand? Pretty much nothing. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Pretty much. Cuba has gotten what it demanded, including today’s revelation about that Terrorist list. I have said before to people who claim this will help Cuba that they forget that Europeans and other Caribbean nations have been able to travel freely to Cuba, and it has made not one BIT of difference to their economy, or their abysmal human rights history.

But those facts just falls on deaf ears to those who cannot hear the notes. Sadly, that is too many people these days…

If liberals and conservatives use the same words, liberty for instance, and mean two different things it is difficult to see how they can come together.

Conservatives tend to view liberty as the notion of being left alone to pursue happiness in whatever way they choose. Liberals tend to view it as the act of creating a level playing field for society’s most vulnerable individuals.

I cannot see how the liberals definition describes “liberty” since by their definition people are forced to do something. The definition that speaks to me strongest is “the power of choice”. It seems to me that liberals only care about “choice” when it pertains to abortion. Even then if you “choose” not to believe abortion is right they treat you as if you were a criminal.

I had more than a few problems with the Democrat Party even when I called myself a Democrat. But these Democrats today have moved so far left I don’t even recognize them. Far left and very nasty people is all I see anymore.

You said it, Marge – that is precisely the problem I think many of us have been having with Liberals these days. The words they use do not equate to the DEFINITIONS of those words. Usually, they are the exact OPPOSITE of those words. How can anyone see “liberty” as something they are FORCED to do?? It simply defies logic and explanation.

And I am so, so, so right there with you on where the DNC is now compared to the years we counted ourselves in that Party. I truly do not recognize it, and am shocked that so many Americans have capitulated to this top-heavy government oversight and dependence from the SAME people who used to demand we “Question Authority!” Now it is “Do Whatever The Government Tells You To Do!” Truly disturbing…

      • GinaR Says:

I think the whole concept of liberalist “liberty” is based on the view of “greater good for all.” Which, of course, is utter nonsense as who decides what’s the greater good? And since we’re NOT all equal, which “all” is the greater good for? And I also think they believe that if one person is not free to do whatever they want, then it’s on EVERYONE else – whether they want to or not – to make sure that person is saved from being a victim! It’s that savior complex, I guess. Liberty = savior

This new Democratic party, courtesy of radical Obama and his ilk, is destructive beyond compare. It is very disturbing, indeed!

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Great point, Gina. Though they do seem to be into the whole victimhood thing in a BIG way.

It really is astonishing the ways in which the New Democratic Party interprets things, how it sees itself as so superior and omniscient to everyone else, how PATERNALISTIC it is while claiming to be the Party for Women. WOW.

          Thanks for the comment!

This was such powerful, moving testimony, wasn’t it? How have we gotten to the place where the IRS is able to get away with targeting citizens for political reasons? Or where a US Rep. can threaten and intimidate private citizens for their political ideology and using the IRS against them like Rep. Cummings did? Deplorable…

    Happy Tax Day!

Newly re-elected Mayor Rahm Emmanuel called Chicago the “greatest city in American”.
The voters of Chicago must think he’s really turned things around since they re-elected him. Why would they do that? What kind of an idiot votes for failure time after time? To me it is simply incomprehensible.

Chicago: Economic Death Spiral After 84 Years of Democratic Control

Public schools are a mess, and the city’s finances place their bonds at near junk level. In 2013, the city averaged 36 homicides a month, with the majority of them unsolved.

I don’t get it, Marge – I truly don’t. They have done the exact same thing in Detroit, which is even worse. In both cases, Democrats have ruled the day for years, and what has it gotten them?? Yet, there they go, pulling that lever one more time for the likes of Emanuel. UGH.

      GREAT cartoon!

Another act by the government of the United States that simply goshwoggles me. Why would they do this? What possible benefit to our country does this do?

Allow Muslims to immigrate is fine with me. But they should have to get in line like everyone else. Well every one except the criminals sneaking across our southern borders on a daily basis.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

WTH? Yeah, fine if they want to immigrate here, but they should NOT be given preferential treatment! First in, first served – that’s how it should be!!
