Whose Fault Is The Violence In Baltimore? *Open Thread*

I am sure you can guess whose fault it is, and naturally, it isn’t the people actually engaging in the violence, or the policies of the Party that has been in charge there for forever. Nope. Naturally, it is the fault of Evil Republicans.

That would be the word from the Lecturing President in the Rose Garden the other day on Baltimore. In case you haven’t seen it, which I can appreciate it since it was pretty hard to watch, but here it is anyway:

Spare me with the arrogant condescension, not-at-all-veiled attack on Republicans, and promoting policies that are not working. Good grief.

But I don’t want to get ahead of myself too much. In case you don’t want to watch Obama, here is a summation by Noah Rothman of HotAir.com:

On Tuesday, Barack Obama admitted that the situation faced by the impoverished residents of American urban centers like Baltimore is a hopeless one.

Oh, he didn’t say that outright. The president waxed noble about police excesses, the aspirations of those born into poverty, and the need to create opportunities for millions of primarily minority city dwellers. But he admitted that he has nothing even resembling a plan to lift America’s minorities out of poverty when he resorted to lamenting the lack of infrastructure spending out of a recalcitrant Republican-led Congress.

In response to a question about the violence in Baltimore posed during a joint White House press conference alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Obama delivered a perfectly anodyne and unremarkable 15 minute lecture about the lamentable state of affairs in America’s cities. There wasn’t much to object to in his response; it was a platitude-laden sermon about the school-to-prison pipeline, criminal justice reform, and excessive drug sentencing. Many leading Republicans would agree with the president’s assessment of the social ills that plague urban centers. Don’t believe me? Check The New York Times.

But the president conceded that he has no real plan to address the chronic hopelessness that bedevils cities like Baltimore when he claimed that what this moment truly called for is more infrastructure spending. And he would get it, too, if it weren’t for those darn Republicans.

Stupid Republicans! Ahem. That is what Obama wants everyone to think, of course. Michelle Malkin highlights just how much “infrastructure spending” we have done under Obama. From Townhall:

[…] In 2009, Obama and the Democrats rammed the $840 billion federal stimulus package through Capitol Hill under the guise of immediate job creation and economic recovery. An estimated $64 billion went to public school districts; another nearly $50 billion went for other education spending. This included $13 billion for low-income public school kids; $4.1 billion for Head Start and childcare services; $650 million for educational technology; $200 million for working college students; and $70 million for homeless children.

How’s that all working out? Last week, economists from the St. Louis Federal Reserve surveyed more than 6,700 education stimulus recipients and concluded that for every $1 million of stimulus grants to a district, a measly 1.5 jobs were created. “Moreover, all of this increase came in the form of nonteaching staff,” the report found, and the “jobs effect was also not statistically different from zero.”

More than three-quarters of the jobs “created or saved” in the first year of the stimulus were government jobs, while roughly 1 million private sector jobs were forestalled or destroyed, according to Ohio State University. President Obama later admitted “there was no such thing” as “shovel-ready projects.” But there were plenty of pork-ready recipients, from green energy billionaires to union bosses to Democratic campaign finance bundlers. About $230 billion in porkulus funds was set aside for infrastructure projects, yet less than a year later, Obama was back asking for another $50 billion to pour down the infrastructure black hole.

In December 2014, the White House unveiled nearly $1 billion in new “investments” to “expand access to high-quality early childhood education to every child in America” from “birth and continuing to age 5.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

The article goes on to detail even more questionable spending of our money under this Administration. It makes Obama’s lecturing of us and blaming Republicans that must more egregious.

Professor Obama’s “hectoring,” to use Michelle Malkin’s word, didn’t sit well with one writer at Breitbart, John Nolte(h/t Facebook friend):

In 2012, after four years of his own failed policies, President Obama won a whopping 87.4% of the Baltimore City vote. Democrats run the city of Baltimore, the unions, the schools, and, yes, the police force. Since 1969, there have only been only been two Republican governors of the State of Maryland.

Liberalism and all the toxic government dependence and cronyism and union corruption and failed schools that comes along with it, has run amok in Baltimore for a half-century, and that is Baltimore’s problem. It is the free people of Baltimore who elect and then re-elect those who institute policies that have so spectacularly failed that once-great city. It is the free people of Baltimore who elected Mayor Room-To-Destroy.

As noted in Malkin’s piece, this country has thrown a LOT of money toward Early Childhood Education, something Obama specifically lamented in his lecture from the Rose Garden. But how does it help when NUMEROUS studies by the Government have demonstrated that Head Start doesn’t work, so I am not really sure why we keep throwing money at that anyway. It is not helping.

But that is only part of the picture being drawn by Obama and Democrats. Nolte continues by addressing another:

[…] Poverty has nothing to do with it. This madness and chaos and anarchy is a Democrat-driven culture that starts at the top with a racially-divisive White House heartbreakingly effective at ginning up hate and violence.

Where I currently reside here in Watauga County, North Carolina, the poverty level is 31.3%. Median income is only $34,293. In both of those areas we are much worse off than Baltimore, that has a poverty rate of only 23.8% and a median income of $41,385.

Despite all that, we don’t riot here in Watauga County. Thankfully, we have not been poisoned by the same left-wing culture that is rotting Baltimore, and so many other cities like it, from the inside out. We get along remarkably well. We are neighbors. We are people who help out one another. We take pride in our community, and are grateful for what we do have. We are far from perfect, but we work out our many differences in civilized ways. Solutions are our goal, not cronyism, narcissistic victimhood, and the blaming of others.

One attitude we don’t have here is the soul-killing belief that somebody owes us something, which, of course, is a recipe for discontent. Because if you’re not getting what’s owed to you, how can you be anything but angry?[…] (Click here to read the rest.)

There is more to Nolte’s piece, but I am sure you get his point. You can’t keep doing the same policies (and entitlements) over and over and over again and expect different results. I am pretty sure that is one definition of “insanity.” Hmm, that’s abt what we have been seeing of late, isn’t it? Throwing more money is not going to do “fix” it. Policies and attitudes are what need to change. Seems that way to me, anyway. Hope about you?

There can be little doubt that LBJ’s “Great Society” is a failure and a fraud and a very expensive one at that.

Democrat cities like Baltimore and Detroit have forged their own misery one vote for Democrats at a time over 50 years.

Now that they have screwed their lives and their cities up beyond all hope of repair they blame the right for not giving them more money to squander. Evidently the 17 Trillion since 1968 isn’t enough. Will it ever be enough?

    • foxyladi14 Says:

Yep Marge, a big failure. 😯

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Holy smokes (!) – $17 TRILLION?? If that sum of money ain’t gonna fix it, then that says something: the policies being funded do not work. Period. There is no reason in the WORLD for places like Baltimore to have substandard education or inner city problems considering the vast sums of money that have been poured into it. As you noted, Baltimore and Detroit are EXCELLENT examples of how Democratic policies end up destroying cities. There is no other way to see it than that. The strangle hold of unions in particular seem to be a BIG problem in both cities, but that seems to be the Dems’ brad and butter.

It is truly appalling, and to try and lay ANY of this at the feet of Reps in Congress now is now is just more of that emotional, hypocritical, manipulative juvenile brow beating that takes the place of RESPONSIBILITY and ACCOUNTABILITY in this Administration. Blame someone else – always…

  2. kenoshamarge Says:

A fun fact that might have you gnashing your teeth:

Obama burned 10,000 gallons of jet fuel using Air Farce One to talk to 25 kids about the dangers of climate change on Earth day. Typical liberal logic.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

That is just unbelievable. The hypocrisy is staggering. Why didn’t he have a video conference and take that opportunity to tell the kids he was NOT going to use a gazillion gallons of fuel to fly down to FL for a day? Sheesh.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Where are the “reporters” telling the public about the waste of taxpayers dollars by this fraud? Too busy chasing Hillary’s Poopy Doo Doo van?

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Well, I have been reading Sharyl Attkisson’s book, and it is troubling to put it mildly in terms of where “journalism” is today…

  3. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

And to prove a point abt the policies in Baltimore, check out this WaPo article and what is happening to those who have caused so much mayhem and destruction: http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/crime/about-80-people-arrested-in-baltimore-turmoil-freed-after-time-runs-out/2015/04/29/db85e064-eea7-11e4-8666-a1d756d0218e_story.html

  4. kenoshamarge Says:

    Good question.

    Do Baltimore Fathers Matter?

We haven’t heard much about the father of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old man whose mysterious death while in police custody ignited savage race riots and attacks on innocent citizens across Baltimore.

We also haven’t heard much about other Baltimore fathers parenting their children in the midst of the chaos.

Instead, we have seen government agencies trying to police the youth through a show of force while still allowing juvenile delinquents to commit crimes. We see complete strangers trying to talk sense to the kids. We see criminal gangs masquerading as noble citizens and managing the chaos through a well-deserved reputation for vengeance. We have seen a desperate single mother trying to discipline her teenage son, but we haven’t seen fathers.

Where are the fathers? This is the uncomfortable questions liberals refuse to ask.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Good question indeed, Marge – where IS the father? While people were saying if the moms were out there stopping these kids that would matter, but (and I can’t remember who it was who said this on the news), it would make a huge impact for the FATHERS to be out there. Where are they??? (I know – the liberals would claim they are all innocent victims who are in jail because of white oppressos. Ahem.)

      • kenoshamarge Says:

They can’t all be in jail. Do the liberals think every inmate is a victim of white racism? What buffoons.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

So it seems. That was part of Hillary’s message abt law enforcement and the justice system, all the black men in jail. But yeah – they can’t ALL be there, and not for nothing, but maybe they are in jail because they committed a crime?? Just a thought. Ahem.

  5. kenoshamarge Says:

    Speaking of Hillary Rev:

Daniel Greenfield’s take on the Clintons and the Democrat party.

Can the Democrats Get Rid of Hillary?

Hillary has the Democratic Party where she wants it. By scaring off every serious candidate, the party has no choice but to get behind her. And the more it gets behind her, the more it’s stuck with her.

It’s a bad marriage that the Democrats can’t seem to escape.

When Bill Clinton left, many Democrats were happy to see the last of the Clintons. The left hated his triangulation. The rest of the party was tired of the scandals and the venal couple’s vulgar greed.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, good one, Marge. I saw an article abt how Bernie Sanders, that total whackadoodle, throwing his hat in the ring can be VERY good for her. Because, well, he’s a Socialist whackadoodle, and people will look at him, then at her as the saner choice.

Good grief, what a mess that Party has become!

      • kenoshamarge Says:

That’s about as good a reason for them to support Hillary as any other. “Vote for her – she’s not as crazy as Bernie Sanders.”

On the other hand the whackadoodle voters can say, “Vote for him – he’s not as corrupt and greedy as she is.”

Surely the left can do better than these two and the shirtless former Governor of Maryland that O’Malley meathead?

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Now THAT’S a bumper sticker, huh? “Vote For Me – At Least I’m Not Crazy!” Or, “Vote For Me – At Least I Shouldn’t Be In Jail!”

          It’s gonna be a long campaign…

  6. kenoshamarge Says:

A.B. Stoddard: Jeb no longer in front

Four months into the 2016 presidential campaign, Jeb Bush has all the money and none of the mojo.

Despite the financial juggernaut the former Florida governor has built — Bush said this week he had raised more than anyone else has at this point in a presidential campaign in history — he is failing to excite crowds, dominate polls or scare away competitors.

A.B. concludes that “Bush could win the nomination just by surviving. Just ask Romney.”

If that doesn’t scare voters away from Bush nothing will. Romney is a good man and would have made a good president IMO. But he never excited the voters. Someone has to do that. We don’t need to have Styrofoam pillars, fainting ladies and other silly Obama nonsense – we do need to think our candidate has done something other that survive the primaries.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I think Romney was too humble abt his character and what a decent man he was – no doubt because of his religion – and wasn’t willing to totally trash people the way they trashed him. I think he would have been heads and shoulders better than Obama.

But yeah – that is a problem in general if people want to be EXCITED by their Presidents as opposed to being LED by them. It takes someone with knowledge, experience, and character to lead people well.

But having charisma doesn’t hurt. Along those lines, in this current field, Rubio and Fiorina seem to enthuse people (she hasn’t had the exposure Rubio has, but when she talks, people are impressed by her). I think Rubio is going to have to be on the ticket somewhere…

Regardless of who the GOP candidate is going to be, they have a mountain to climb just dealing with the BS the press makes up abt them, or focuses on (like having a dog in a dog carrier on top of a car. Has NONE of these Liberals ever seen dogs in the back of pick up trucks? Heck, most of those aren’t even tied off (though they sure as hell SHOULD be), yet they tarnished Romney because he was rich (like the Dems aren’t) and then they picked up this story from DECADES ago to go after Romney. That shoulda been a sign to people that they were grasping at straws, but no…

Btw, I am reading Attkisson’s book now, and one exercise she does routinely is to read something abt a candidate, for example, and consider how the media would have acted had the other side done that, like Obama with his 57 states thing (an actual example she used). It was crystal clear from her examples that the media does indeed have a major liberal bias – not that we didn’t already know it, but for someone like her to write it “out loud” in a book says something.

Anyway – I don’t want Bush because I don’t like his policies, and there are others I like more. Interesting piece – thanks!

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I thought, and still think, that Romney was and is a good man. I also think he’s smart, competent and as honest as any politician can be. IMHO he was unwilling to fight back. He isn’t the “fire in the belly” type. He should have put Ann in charge of fighting – there’s a fighter and a woman who would smack the crap out of anyone who would malign her man if she was allowed. The whole campaign just seemed to mellow.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

The comment abt Ann LITERALLY had me LOL – good one, Marge! And you ain’t only kidding, either. If ANYONE could have taken on the Dem. spin machine, it was her. You don’t face a crippling illness AND raise a whole bunch of boys without being able to rule with a firm hand.

I agree completely abt Romney – he was just too decent. He didn’t want to be rude to people like Candy Crowley no matter HOW wrong or inappropriate he was. But yeah – I totally hear you, and thanks for the laugh!

          • kenoshamarge Says:

You had the right word, “decent”. That doesn’t mean that I don’t think Ann Romney is decent, I think she’s wonderful! What a first lady she would have been. She has had to be a fighter. Plus what woman worth her salt doesn’t fight for her mate? I may get all pissed off at Lou from time to time, but let anyone else bad mouth him and they have one very angry old lady at their throat. I did not live all these years and go through all the things I’ve survived to be a sweet little old lady. I am a woman with the will to fight for what I believe and those I care for.

I believe that Ann Romney is that kind of woman and more. I doubt I would have faced the ordeals she experienced with the grace and charm that she did. But I would have fought in my own way. Thus I like and respect fighters – especially those who are cast in a finer mold than I am.

  7. kinthenorthwest Says:

This is such a screw up with so many trying to point fingers at anyone else but where it should be. Yet it seems that in the long run the victims will not be Freddie’s family but all the people who were injured or burned out during the riots.
Amy I cannot believe how the mayor keeps trying to back track her comments. First she tried to back track her blessing for riots and not its her comment about the rioters being thugs.
“I wanted to clarify my comments on “thugs.” When you speak out of frustration and anger, one can say things in a way that you don’t mean. That night we saw misguided young people who need to be held accountable, but who also need support. And my comments then didn’t convey that”
Now it seems that another witness has stepped forward who was in the van with Freddie. On top of having a previous injury and surgery to his back, its looking like Freddie was trying to injure himself to make the police look bad.
Prisoner in van said Freddie Gray was ‘trying to injure himself,’ document says

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It truly is a major screw-up, Kin, made all the worse by the Mayor of Baltimore, the President, and Al Sharpton coming down there. Add to that the usual suspects (OWS, for example), and you know this is much more abt waging violence than abt justice.

I had seen an article abt Gray having had a number of back surgeries, including one just recent;y. It said he shouldn’t have even been up at all, but he was trying to cash out his settlement with Allstate. I was waiting to see what the report said though, so for now I am taking it with a grain of salt. But if it is true, and he really did have all these back surgeries including one just recently, AND was banging his head on the van, well, once again – that paints a VERY different picture than the one the Media and Democrats (I know, I know – all the same) have painted. Again.

When in the hell are people just going to wait for the FACTS to come out before they go off half-cocked loaded for bear?? Oh, wait, that doesn’t serve their narrative, does it? Sigh.

Thanks for bringing the WaPo link forward – interesting info indeed!

      • kinthenorthwest Says:

I keep trying to take all of this with a grain of salt too. However the more that I read on this the more I feel that this is just another ambulance chaser in this case..

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, I don’t doubt that at all, Kin. Seriously, they have been wrong in EVERY single case, beginning with the Harvard one as John Nolte pointed out in his piece in the post above. It is appalling to see the people they use to further their own agenda. Just appalling (and I hope you know I was just putting out that disclaimer in general, not directed at you specifically!).

  8. kenoshamarge Says:

I suspect that the facts in the case are being held back because they don’t show the police in as bad a light as the activists and protesters want.

As for the Mayor she’s what you get when people vote for race and gender instead of competence and honesty. Even a mediocrity like Mayor Rawlings-Blake can hold things together, albeit badly, when things are normal. Once a crisis comes along they are clueless. That requires a leader and that seems to be sadly missing in the resume of the Mayor. Sadly for her city and the people that counted on her.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I suspect you are ABSOLUTELY right abt the report. Once again, the FACTS do not match the NARRATIVE they have been bending over backwards to push, with all these riots and protests all over the country based on a pack of LIES. Period. Ugh.

And you are so right abt this Mayor too. She is a disaster, but no doubt, they will keep re-electing her. That seems to be where we are these days – Identity politics trumps competency.

Btw, did you see the way she let AL SHARPTON shove Leland Vitter out of the way, how she capitulated to SHARPTON, the biggest race-baiter on the PLANET?? Wow. That says everything abt her, and NONE of it good…

  9. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Check out this letter from Dr. Alveda King to the Mayor of Baltimore: http://www.tpnn.com/2015/04/28/open-letter-to-baltimore-mayor-from-alveda-king/

  10. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Btw, there is an article in the Post and Courier today that Charleston police are still trying to track down those rampaging youth who were attacking people and tying up traffic this past weekend. At least they are moving forward as opposed to being called off…

I hope they get them all.

Which reminds me – I heard a protester in Baltimore today say that they are marching for equality, for people to be treated the same. Well, gee, that would be NICE, wouldn’t it? But right now, some people seem to get a separate set of rules than others. How else does one explain the sheer lack of arrests in all of these protests across the country? Yeah, I would like it to be equal, and for people not to FREAK OUT every time a black criminal is killed by police, or dies in police custody until ALL the facts are out. What a concept…

  11. HELENK3 Says:

is this a declaration of war?

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Sounds like it. And how nice for the Black Panthers to know that Eric Holder’s do nothing Justice Department is now Loretta Lynch’s Justice Department that is racist and corrupt. That should guarantee them a free ride no matter what they do.

  12. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Huh – I thought I sent a response from my phone when I was having some technical difficulty with my computer. If another answer shows up, that’s why!

Anywho, the NBPP has known since the get-go that they were not going to be held to the Law. Holder’s DOJ made that message loud and clear. So if they start threatening to kill people, I am sure the new AG will find a way to dismiss and downplay it. I mean, c’mon, not like they have ever killed anyone before, is it? Ahem…

  13. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Marge, there’s no more room up top, but I did want to say, I totally understood what you were saying abt Ann Romney! She seems very sweet, and is very funny, but you KNOW she has a spine of steel to deal with all she has over the years. Add to that someone talking badly abt her beloved husband, and yeah – I can see her getting peeved abt that! 🙂

She would have made a FINE First Lady. You know damn well she wouldn’t have been whining abt not getting a paycheck while having a HUGE staff, a personal chef, a MANSION, and all the “free” lavish vacations she wanted like our current one does. Ugh. What this country missed…
