About How That Healthcare.Gov Thing Is Working… *Open Thread* UPDATED

by

Update at the end of the post.

Or rather, NOT working, as the case may be. Okay, that IS the case, no need to beat around the bush about it. One area in particular is working exactly the OPPOSITE of what they promised (which many of us didn’t buy, but whatever, right?) That would be the number of ER visits.

Yes, while we are focusing on so many other issues currently facing the nation, Obamacare continues to lumber along having all kinds of impacts on us. This one factor is a big one, that’s for sure.

Would you be surprised to learn that they have gone UP, not DOWN, since the inception of Obamacare? Yeah, I didn’t think so. It sure wasn’t for Ed Morrisey at HotAir.com:

And not unexpected either, except for those who continue to defend ObamaCare as the solution to rising medical costs. A poll of over 2,000 emergency room doctors shows that visits to ERs have increased, and in precisely the population that ObamaCare advocates claimed they would decrease and reduce costs:

A survey of 2,098 emergency-room doctors conducted in March showed about three-quarters said visits had risen since January 2014. That was a significant uptick from a year earlier, when less than half of doctors surveyed reported an increase. The survey by the American College of Emergency Physicians is scheduled to be published Monday.

Medicaid recipients newly insured under the health law are struggling to get appointments or find doctors who will accept their coverage, and consequently wind up in the ER, ACEP said. Volume might also be increasing due to hospital and emergency-department closures—a long-standing trend.

“There was a grand theory the law would reduce ER visits,” said Dr. Howard Mell, a spokesman for ACEP. “Well, guess what, it hasn’t happened. Visits are going up despite the ACA, and in a lot of cases because of it.”

ObamaCare includes a Medicaid expansion component, which advocates claimed would get people out of ERs and into clinics. Emergency rooms cannot deny service, and many people without health insurance chose to seek care in ERs and then let their bills go unpaid, creating the need for government subsidies. By forcing people into either health insurance plans or Medicaid through the individual mandate, ObamaCare would give these patients the option to seek medical care at lower-cost clinics rather than through expensive ER visits, which was a major theory for its supposed cost controls.

And in theory, that sounded pretty good. In practice? Not so much…[…] (Click here to read the rest.)

Shocking, I know. Okay, it probably isn’t to most of us who knew that a lot of these claims by Obama and his Minions were a crock of hooey. Turns out that is indeed the case on a HOST of levels. All at the taxpayer’s expense, I might add.

Who can forget how horrible the website was, how poorly it functioned when it functioned, how vulnerable our private information was (is) to fraud (and more), and how unbelievably, INSANELY expensive just the WEBSITE was to create? Never mind all of the false claims by Obama himself – you know the ones, like “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor,” blah, blah, blah:

Yeah. Right. Like I said, a whole bunch of hooey was spewed about this law, its benefits, how much it would save (Obama claimed for a family of four, it would save $2,500 a year – AHAHAHAHA), and more. Please.

But yeah, that whole ER visit was a BIG one made by the Democrats and their advocates repeatedly. And now we know THAT is wrong, too. Awesome. Just freakin’ awesome. The Democrats WRECKED out Health-care system based on a whole bunch of lies, forcing a law on us the vast majority of citizens did NOT want, and not only is it FAR more expensive than we were told it was going to be, but it is far less effective than it was supposed to be. In other words, it is a total Lose-Lose for us.

Another way in which we lose regarding Obamacare is the secretive manner by which our public officials conduct our business. Sharyl Attkisson has a GREAT piece on this very topic:

[…] In 2009, when President Obama ordered federal agencies to be more open and err on the side of releasing material to the public, this can’t be what anyone had in mind: thousands of pages of HealthCare.gov public business conducted via email by public officials yet somehow deemed so sensitive, so secret in nature, that we are not to see it.

[…]

Public disclosure has gotten to be so bad that the overused b(5) exemption to turning over material has been nicknamed the “withhold it because you want to” exemption.

Who is in charge of forcing agencies to properly comply with FOI law? The Department of Justice, which — unfortunately — is just as egregious with its FOI violations and defends the federal agencies in court for their failure to disclose. So the agency that could and should prosecute them is not about to do so. It’s a Catch 22. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

A “Catch-22,” to put it mildly. So the whole law is costing us a boatload of money; with public officials, paid by us, writing emails that they refuse to allow us to see; with many people losing the health care they really did want to keep; with the tax portion worse than people thought it would be; with just about all of us paying more than we were before for less; all while Obama and the Democrats claim it is working because using Common Core math, they claim 8 million people are now covered, which, in the scheme of things, is a mere drop in the bucket of people here and not very many for whom we should have trashed the entire system.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

Maybe the Supreme Court will actually do the right thing this time around. I guess time will tell. In the meantime, we might be getting totally screwed over by this thing. If only we could actually read those emails to know for sure…

This is an Open Thread.

UPDATE: The Daily Caller also has an article highlighting two more ways Obamacare is “imploding”: low enrollment numbers, and the cost to states. And the hits just keep on coming…

No matter how badly ObamaCare performs we can count of the media sycophants and the Obama administration to keep telling us what a success it is. Facts mean nothing to these people. The truth means nothing to these people. And an honest concern for people who need health care means nothing to them.

If they really cared they would have worked with the Republicans to actually improve a system that was/is seriously flawed. No one in this country should “want” for decent health care.

The fact is the rich and the poor both have all the health care they want and need. The rich can pay and the poor can have theirs paid for by others. Those in the middle, the middle-class, and the working poor are the ones who suffer. Much is said about them but little is done. And ObamaCare? Most people with a brain know its a disaster and all the lies by the left won’t change that.

You ain’t only kidding, I am reading Attkisson’s Stonewalled, and what she reports abt how the media massages the message is TRULY disconcerting. Obamacare was a specific example she gave of that.

That is all to say, you are absolutely right – the truth means NOTHING to these people. What’s more,t hey don’t care because they don’t HAVE to care. They have no qualms spending our money and telling us it is good for us. UGH.

      Great comment.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

They also don’t have to care because their voters don’t hold them accountable for anything.

On another topic, Megan McArdle attempts to explain to us how two wiley old pols could screw up so badly and so often. Seriously, Bill Clinton saying he has to give those high dollars speeches because he has to pay the bills? That was so from the standard of political wiliness to expect from the Big Dawg it is amazing.

    What the Clintons Haven’t Learned

The Clintons have known for a long while that Hillary would be running in 2016. And they ought to have known that accepting foreign donations, from folks who wanted things from the State Department, would become a problem for her candidacy. They certainly should have been aware that funneling all of her State Department e-mails through a private server, and then destroying them, would create terrible optics for her campaign and fuel any subsequent scandals. Why, then, did two such tenacious, wily campaigners proceed with this nonsense?

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Could you believe that claptrap comiing from Bill? He has to prepare for TWO WHOLE HOURS for a speech? Oh, he must just be EXHAUSTED after that. Sheesh. Though as Kimberly Guilfoyle said, if he can get paid half a million for a speech, more power to him, but really – this crying poor mouth and “bills to pay” is just absurd coming from multimillionaires many times over…

      • mcnorman Says:

I have grown so tired and disappointed in how our leaders have become no different than those of third world countries. They come to power to continuously suck the life out of the country. Who said the tax base was their wallet? I don’t remember learning that in school.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

No matter how corrupt Bill Clinton was the talk was always about what a fantastic politician he was and therefore his glibness and talent excused his tawdry behavior. Now it seems that is no longer in play. At least recently his performances haven’t been up to that old Clinton “standard”.

Actually rather awkward when the Clinton “campaign” has to throw Bill and his supposedly silver tongue under the bus. This could get interesting. In fact, speaking just for myself, the only interesting thing about the Clintons has become their willingness to say or do anything.

Still waiting for Hillary to emerge from her bunker.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

GREAT cartoon – and you are so right abt the passes Bill got continually. If the press – and HILLARY – are turning against him, after by many reports she wanted to use him to help her win, that could make it even more difficult for her…

  15. kenoshamarge Says:

Carly Fiorina did so much better against the Couric POS than Sarah Palin did. She may not end up as president but she certainly showed she has a right to a place in the contest. And unlike Hillary Clinton, she’s out there giving interviews to a biased POS like Couric not hiding in her bunker. I would put money on a Fiorina vs Clinton debate and I’m not a betting woman.

Carly Fiorina Nails Katie Couric on Double Standards, Hillary Defense

    http://newsbusters.org/blogs/scott-whitlock/2015/05/05/carly-fiorina-nails-katie-couric-double-standards-hillary-defense

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Fiorina is not someone to be taken lightly, no doubt abt it. But you have to remember, they BUTCHERED the interview Pail had with her. I saw the original transcript and the way they cut it to make Palin look stupid was astonishing. They did everything they possibly could to make Palin look bad, and sadly, it was pretty successful.

Remember how they demanded all the emails of Palin because they just KNEW there were going to be a bunch of smoking guns in there, or at the least,s how how stupid she was? Once they got them, they saw how absolutely wrong they were on every count, and ALL those emails that cost the state of Alaska a TON of time and money quietly disappeared from the press…

Reading Attkisson’s troubling book, I am not one bit surprised by that, either. Her book is shocking. Seriously. I’ll lend it to you when I’m done if you are interested. 🙂

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I “like” Sarah Palin and voted for McCain purely because of that. Him I liked, not so much just much more than Obama.

But I don’t think Sarah Palin is a “quick on her feet” so to speak when it comes to back and forth with the medial. She manages to skewer them regularly after the fact but one on one – not so much.

And there was not a dirty trick the left didn’t play against her. Carly Fiorina, in showing Couric up, can expect to get attacked more viciously now. Not that she wasn’t, it just will get worse.

Oh and by the way, IMO, Fiorina should have asked Couric about her basically getting fired from CBS as anchor. Pot calling kettle or Tit for tat right?

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I hear you abt Palin – the times i have seen her speak when asked questions by someone like Greta van Susteren as opposed to Couric and her ilk have been illustrative. I don’t know if Palin is thinking of all the ways her words are going to be twisted when she is interviewed by people like COuric before she responds or not, but I would not be surprised by that.

And as Attkisson points out in her book, how Palin’s misstatements, ones she has corrected immediaetly (like North Korea when it should have been South Korea) were overblown as compared to the misstatements by Obama, which the media just let go. It is a technique Attkisson uses – she inserts someone else’s name from the other side to see if the MSM is being biased or not, and as we know, the bias is pretty evident. Palin was a great case in point. Heck, people were so willing to buy the false narrative abt her, they believed part of a comedy skit was what she actually said (the “I can see Russia from my house!” Tina Fey comment). Things sure would be different without a certain agenda being pushed in this country by the MSM, that’s for sure.

Sorry – this book has really gotten me riled up even more than usual. 🙂

No kidding. It is astonishing to me to hear people like Bill O’Reilly going the Appeasement Route when it comes to radical Muslims. WTH?? I am not a big fan of his anyway, but Megyn Kelly was spot on in her comments to him, and then he goes on the next night to blather on some more abt how we don’t need to make then upset (words to that effect). NOTHING WE DO will make a difference to them – NOTHING. These attempts to bow over, curtail OUR rights, all to try and not upset their delicate, infantile whims, are so wrong-headed, it makes my head want to explode.

WHY are people so willing to roll over? And how is it they cannot see that no matter how far we go, it will NEVER be far enough for these radicals???? Insane, just insane.
