Remembering Those Who Gave Their All – Memorial Day *Open Thread*

Memorial Day is upon us, a day often seen as the de facto kickoff to Summer and all that implies. It is a day often spent doing any number of things not related to the solemnity this day represents. And that, of course, is remembering those who gave their lives in service to this nation.

That sacrifice is not one to be taken lightly or to be forgotten. Many of us have not served in the military, for any number of reasons. For me, despite my sister in law encouraging me to join the Navy as she had done after college, my knees did not permit my being able to serve. But for those who did serve, and are serving, their willingness to put themselves in harm’s way for us, for our country, is an awe-inspiring act on its own.

Memorial Day(Photo Credit: To that point, at an observance last Memorial Day was this piece by Johnny Q. Gogue III. “The Oath Of The Soldier.” Goque’s piece includes both the history of Memorial Day, and the power of the Oath taken by those who serve, including Gogue. From his speech:

[…] On May 5, 1868, an order issued by General John Logan established a day of remembrance for those soldiers who died during the Civil War. May 30, 1868, was the day designated for this observance and flowers were placed on the graves of the fallen soldiers of both the Union and Confederate Armies. New York was the first state to officially recognize this observance in 1873 and in 1971 with the passage of the National Holiday Act; Memorial Day was designated as the last Monday of May.

I, like my grandfathers, father, uncles and aunt before me, am a veteran. I am and was proud of serving in the Armed Forces. I served in the Army from 1985 to 1994. I was in Operation Desert Storm/Shield. I know what Memorial Day is about.

I have two brothers who are currently serving. One brother is serving in the Navy in Italy. My youngest brother, who is currently serving in the Army, is right now in Iraq supporting and defending his fellow soldiers. I know what Memorial Day is about.

Memorial Day for all soldiers is embodied in the words of the oath that you first take when you enlist into the service of the country:

This oath taken by each and every soldier exemplifies the reason why soldiers do what they do each and every day. Soldiers are defenders of the same principles that made this country great. They stand as Patriots to defend and protect the ideals and sentiments espoused in the Constitution of the United States. Soldiers bear true faith and allegiance to that document and they work, and live, within the Codes of Military Justice. Soldiers also obey the orders of the President of the United States and the Officers appointed over them. These truths are self evident in the everyday lives of soldiers. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

And they are truths for which many have given their very all, a sacrifice of the ultimate kind, one that leaves a hole in the lives of their families and friends, their comrades in arms, and one that merits our deepest gratitude. And it is one that merits our remembering what these people did for us, all of us, on this Memorial Day and every day:

To the fallen, you are not forgotten. May we as a nation prove worthy of your sacrifice; may we not take it for granted either through ignorance or arrogance; and may we always remember you this Memorial Day and always…

    It’s the Soldier,
    not the reporter
Who has given us the freedom of the press.

    It’s the Soldier,
    not the poet,
Who has given us the freedom of speech.

    It’s the Soldier,
    not the politicians that ensures
Our right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

    It’s the Soldier
    who salutes the flag,
    who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag.

For me this was the saddest image of all. Those hands about to receive the flag would be mother, father, sister, brother, wife, son, daughter… And the pain would be too deep and wide to express. That’s the cost of all those flags in the cemetery on Memorial Day.

I resent that Memorial Day has become nothing more than a day off from work, a picnic or cookout and worst of all a day for sales. To me it demeans all that it cost to make all those things possible.

But this is a free country, thanks to those who gave their lives and body parts and hearts and minds and so we can be as insensitive as we choose.

I don’t know how it became all abt shopping and cook outs either, except being tied to a long weekend and the de facto beginning of Summer. But that so much of it no longer even reflects the reason for the holiday is sad.

Though you are right abt the right for it to have morphed so…

I agree with this column by Roger L. Simon. Most “thinking” voters will, and I realize that is NOT a majority of voters, will be disgusted with a flash from past election – Bush v Clinton. However the women who would vote for Lucretia Borgia based on her female parts would certainly turn out in droves for Hillary. Not to mention all those, both left and right, who still have an animus towards George W. JMO of course.

Jeb Should Withdraw to Save the Country From Hillary

Jeb Bush should withdraw from the presidential contest of 2016. He should do so soon to become a true hero to our country that sorely needs one. And he should accompany his withdrawal with a detailed explanation of his reasons. It is not just because his mother Barbara Bush was correct in her original assessment that the United States does not any more Bushes or Clintons. It is far more.

The Democratic Party looks determined to nominate a woman for president that a majority of the country thinks a liar. A recent poll from NBC and the Wall Street Journal found a paltry 25% of Americans believe Hillary Clinton to be honest. And this is before Mrs. Clinton assumes office. Who knows what would happen thereafter when so many presidents find themselves in crisis situations demanding courage and integrity?

If Mrs. Clinton were to win the presidency, she would do so under a cloud of distrust unprecedented in any of our lifetimes. She would have no honeymoon period and would not deserve one. And this would be happening at a moment in history when the entire world is on a knife edge because of the rise of radical Islam and ISIS throughout the Middle East, Africa, South East Asia, Latin America and, increasingly, Europe, not to mention having to monitor the controversial nuclear deal with Iran, if and when such a thing is signed.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Good piece by Simon. It is definitely food for thought.

I am not at all crazy abt Jeb, and it has nothing to do with his last name, either. He is so far from my faves, there is no contest.

      Anyway, thanks for this!
