“Feeling Young,” Feeding The Poor, Rainbow Fire, And “Farther Along” *Open Thread*

by

It’s the weekend, and time for a break from politics as usual, Clinton’s email lies, Trump’s bombastic claims; more proof that the USA gave away the store to the Terror Monger, Iran; and yes, the horror of the Planned Parenthood videos.

Thank heavens. It just seems to be cumulative, doesn’t it? The frustration, the anger, and the gut-wrenching view into what I can only see as pure evil. That can be applied to more than one in that list, I realize. It has just been that kind of week, that kind of month, that kind of summer, I reckon. And now it is time for a break.

First up is an absolutely delightful dance video. Or at least, that’s what the young woman dancing in it THINKS that it is.. Via HuffPo, check out this great dancing, and touching surprise:

I admit it – it made me teary. They are great dancers, to be sure, and what a fantastic routine that was. I would love to see something like that unfolding before me on the streets of NYC. The way it ended, though, was the cherry on top, wasn’t it? What a lovely moment, and how wonderful that it was captured on film for posterity. Good luck to the happy couple!

And to carry along that theme – getting married – what this couple did for their wedding is incredibly touching. From Earthporn:

[…] The Turkish bride and groom were wed at a ceremony in the southern city of Kilis, which is located on the Syrian border. After their ceremony the couple didn’t have a grand party with friends and family, but instead donated the money and time to helping Syrian refugees.

The newlyweds remained in their wedding clothes as they worked behind the food counter feeding 4,000 people. They worked with Turkish charity Kimse Yok Mu to accomplish their big-hearted goal. KYM has been feeding Syrian refugees in and around Kilis for years.

Üzümcüoğlu’s father works as an active volunteer for the organization, it was his idea for his son and daughter-in-law to share their special day feeding the refugees. The proud father said, “I’m very happy that he accepted it and they started their new happy journey with such a selfless action.”

The United Nations reports that Turkey has opened its doors to over one million Syrian refugees since the conflict raged in 2011. This is only a fraction of the four million refugees total that have fled Syria seeking shelter from other countries.

A spokesperson for KYM quoted the couple saying, “We wanted to help our Syrian brothers. Seeing the happiness in the eyes of the Syrian refugee children is just priceless. We started our journey to happiness with making others happy and that’s a great feeling.” (Click here to read the rest.)

Now I have something to share that came from not far from here, Isle of Palms, SC (again, via EarthPorn), taken by Tiffany Jenks:

Fire Rainbow

Isn’t that astonishing? EarthPorn has the explanation of how this happens:

[…] While they’re best known as fire rainbows, the technical name for the phenomena is circumhorizontal arcs, and they occur in high-level cirrus clouds which are made up of tiny ice crystals.

Meteorologist Justin Lock explained, “To produce the rainbow colors the sun’s rays must enter the ice crystals at a precise angle to give the prism effect of the color spectrum.”

“The sun must be at an altitude of at least 58 degrees above the horizon,” he added. “Again, it has to do with getting the precise angle.”

Jenks told CBS, “The world today is so full strife, but just for that brief moment — when looking at the fire rainbow myself, the others around me and those seeing the photo — I seemed to step back and remember how beautiful our planet really is and how blessed we are to be a part of it.”

Amen to that. It truly is a beautiful world, and one way or another, we are reminded of that and can take joy and comfort in the beauty of this incredible planet.

Here is one more from that amazing meteorological event (photo by Tracey Smith at MyModernMet):

Amazing, isn’t it? This planet on which we make our home does often remind us that, in spite of all the sorrows, troubles, and wicked ways of some people, soul-reaching beauty is here for us. What a blessing that is…

Finally, in light of some of the recent news, this song has been on my heart. I want to share it with you now as it gives me some hope:

“Farther along, we will understand why…” Amen to that, too.

This is your Weekend Open Thread.

Republican Politicians, especially those in leadership positions have good reason to fear Donald Trump. They have betrayed their constituency year after year all the way back to “read my lips, no new taxes”.

The last election, which returned the Republicans to power in the Senate has been the biggest betrayal of all. I understand the rage if not the support for the obnoxious Trump. I am less sympathetic towards their feelings when Trump supporters attack everyone on the right that doesn’t see Trump as the new messiah. We saw way too much of that irrationality with the Obots. Trumpites don’t endear themselves to the rest of us by emulating Obots.

I have made no secret of my disdain for Trump. I cannot understand how anyone can support the big bag of wind. I do try to understand. Still not understanding it. Be angry yes – support a boorish, misogynistic windbag because of it? Illogical.

The problem with this Trump obsession is that good men, and women, like Walker, Cruz and Fiorina get little attention. You cannot turn on FOX with out being subjected to Trump by the hour.

Not being interested I either read or watch my Prime “Instant Video”. I had never watched “Justified” and am now up to the middle of season 5. I’m loving it.

I also watched “Game of Thrones” that way and also loved it. Although the nudity is a bit much. But as an escape from all the Trumpiness I can stand to see some bare butts and boobs since politics is full of both.

    • helenk3 Says:

Justified was one of my favorite tv shows. You know I had to like Hell on Wheels too.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I don’t know why I didn’t watch it. But I usually don’t watch a show if I don’t see the first few episodes since you don’t know what the heck is going on. One thing about having the whole shebang on Instant Video is that if one episode leaves me hanging more than I can bear I just click on the next one and to heck with reruns and Trump on cable and regular television.

      • foxyladi14 Says:

        Me too Helen. 🙂

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Great comment, Marge. I understand the anger and rage, too – truly. I get it. But calling people names, bragging constantly, and having a thin skin is what we already HAVE. Add to that the sheer unwillingness to even consider what Trump has said and not, that long ago, just astounds me. It is akin to those who, supported Hillary wholeheartedly in 2008 doing so again despite the lies, Benghazi, and failed policies. It makes no sense to me at all.

And somehow Fox went from kinda laughing at the Trump candidacy to being all in. I don’t get it, or all the free air time. How abt highlighting speeches of substance by the other candidates instead of Trump calling people stupid or worse? I do not appreciate those kind of ad hominem attacks and find them juvenile at best.

It is going to be a long year…

I am getting ready to watch a Yankees game and hope like hell they can beat the sub .500 Indians already. And since my back is completely freaking out right now, lying on the heating pad for the day (unfortunately, my knees are not my only orthopedic problem. Issues in my back have gotten worse and are likely exacerbating the issues with my knees. Resting today in the hope of seeing some of the Gentle Carousel horses who R win the area tomorrow for a firefighter charity event. Fingers crossed!).

      Enjoy your shows!

FYI: my sister just alerted me to another email hack. This one says it is from a Yahoo account. I NEVER use Yahoo – ever.

Please don’t open any links in emails that claim to be from me unless I actually address you like I know you! 🙂

When you get suspicious emails like this, always hover over what it claims to be as my email address. Usually, it is not. Just a word of advice!

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Good advice and I learned that, from Yahoo by the way, some time ago. They warned me that unless they addressed me by name it was not from them. Since that time I received dozens of emails claiming to be from Yahoo that were not and were immediately deleted.

Any entity or person that I want to receive email from knows who I am.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks, and exactly. I also never send out emails with a whole bunch of addresses listed visible to everyone. On those very rare occasions I have something to send to more than one person, I always hide the addresses.

        These hackers make me nuts.

Her pain and outrage are palpable. I am positive that there are millions more who feel as she does. They will have to stand up, as she did, and speak their mines.

Their neighborhoods, their culture has been taken over by thugs. The police can help to contain the violence but it takes the people most affected themselves to do what needs to be done.

This brave woman made a good start. Who will have the courage and character to follow her lead?

  9. kenoshamarge Says:

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Uh, yeah – that is exactly what these people want. And “freedom from religion” is exactly it – they are trying to completely squelch the First Amendment. As we have said numerous times here, it is freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion, and NO ONE has the right not to be offended.

The mindset of these people is so juvenile, so immature, that they cannot even stomach seeing something religious, says a LOT abt them. None of it good, I might add.

  10. kenoshamarge Says:

    The RG3-Trump-Cruz-Obama Nexus

    By Carl M. Cannon

“I know I’m the best quarterback on this team. I feel like I’m the best quarterback in the league and I have to go out and show that. … There’s guys in this league that have done way more than me. But I still view myself as the best because that’s what I work toward every single day.” – Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.

I got to thinking that I’ve been too hard on Donald Trump lately. And Ted Cruz. Not to mention Barack Obama. It also made me realize why those three men in particular, and modern politicians in general, are so irritating. It’s the incessant bragging. Trump’s boasts are so constant that there’s little point in mentioning them. Okay, well, just a few:

“I’m really rich,” he said in his announcement speech. As if we didn’t know this already, he added, “I’m proud of my net worth, I really am.”

Sometimes the boasting is delusional, such as when he said in the first Republican debate that illegal immigration “wasn’t on anybody’s mind until I brought it up at my announcement.”

The Donald is at his truest self on Twitter: “Sorry losers and haters, but my I.Q. is one of the highest -and you all know it!” he tweeted a couple of years ago. “Please don’t feel so stupid or insecure, it’s not your fault.”

But is he really so different from the others? They are all RG3s now. Actual performance is secondary to performance art. Psyching yourself up is what matters. Chris Christie, the New Jersey governor who dances with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in the team’s luxury suite, praised his own performance at this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference, even after finishing 10th in a straw poll there with 2.8 percent.

Scott Walker asserted in his 2015 State of the State address that his education policies have borne fruit. “ACT scores are up and Wisconsin now ranks second in the country,” he boasted proudly. Actually, ACT scores are not up and the state’s ranking, which is misleading anyway, is unchanged.

Carly Fiorina burnishes her lack of government experience by pointing to her career in business. Specifically, she brags that while CEO of Hewlett-Packard, she doubled the Silicon Valley giant’s annual revenues to $90 billion. What she doesn’t mention is that this was accomplished via HP’s disastrous acquisition of Compaq Computer Corp.

    http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2015/08/23/the_rg3-trump-cruz-obama_nexus_127849-comments.html

I was thinking as I was reading this article that there were going to be some seriously annoyed people because Cannon has the audacity to bash both sides of the aisle.

I also thought that there were going to be some people that didn’t get the tongue in cheek humor. I was right.

I responded in the comments although I know I shouldn’t have done it. Now my email box will be all stunk up by a bunch of ignorant , ranting, fools. I’ve vowed before not to comment on most sites because the haters follow you home.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I couldn’t believe when I saw what RGIII said. Never mind that he has been injured, and now is injured AGAIN already. What arrogance!

And that is the thing – I was just talking abt this with Suzy this morning, abt Trump’s arrogance and bombastic nature. Most of the clips I have seen, he is bragging abt himself. WHY do people find that appealing?? I simply do not understand it, Marge. I didn’t understand it with Obama, either. It makes NO sense to me at all.

Especially considering the constant boasting, bragging, and arrogance of Obama, why in the WORLD would someone who talks more abt himself than any policy be doing so well

      I just don’t get it.

And yeah – I totally hear you abt the attacks when you try to make a point at other sites. It is tiresome, to be sure. I rarely comment anywhere else because people have so few filters these days…

      Thanks for this!

I hope you are enjoying it too Foxy. The weather here is cloudy at times but it about 74 and a lovely day. I hate hot weather and hate the feeling of being held captive by my air conditioner. I never tolerated heat well but since my surgery it’s even worse. So I love days like today when I can get out and pet my tomatoes and herbs and enjoy Lou’s beautiful roses.

Then we both sit at the little bistro table I bought him for his birthday and watch goldfinches and hummingbirds. As well as all the other backyard birds we feed.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

That sounds perfect, Marge! I have been watching some hummingbirds chasing each other today. I keep telling them there is more than one bird feeder for them. But they don’t listen! 🙂

I admit, I am the opposite. My joints cannot handle cold weather very well unfortunately. Maybe it was all those years in NYC, Boston, and the mountains of Virginia. I like my warm weather, that is for sure (though I enjoy visiting cooler places, just can’t stay too long!).

I love the image of you in the garden, the roses, tomatoes, and herbs with all the birds around. Lovely!

In any event, I hope everyone is having a wonderful day!

I got a very bad case of “sunstroke” when I was 8 years old. Thought if I stayed out in the sun long enough all my freckles would grow together and I would get a tan like the other kids. As a very fair redhead it didn’t work so well. I was in the hospital for a week, my skin peeled like a snake and I’ve never been able to tolerate the sun or heat since. We live on a busy street so you should see the looks I get in my long sleeve shirt and hat when I cut the grass when it’s hot outside. Talk about your dotty old ladies.

          • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

OHMYGOSH, Marge – that sounds TERRIBLE! Well, no WONDER you don’t like hot weather! Holy smokes! That must have been so, so painful – ouch! No wonder you wear long sleeves and stuff. I would too!

            Wow – bless your heart!

(Btw, my brother is a red head/fair skinned, and four of five of his kids have red hair, and all are fair skinned. I have red highlights and freckle, too, but not as much. I would get teased by my oldest brother for looking like a raccoon when I was a kid and we were at the beach, though. 🙂 )
