The Wrong One Bites The Dust, And Other News *Open Thread*

As many of you know, Gov. Scott Walker has dropped out of the race to become the Republican nominee for President. Gov. Walker is a strong, stand-up guy, and there are a good half a dozen (or more) people I can think of I would rather have out of this race than him. Unfortunately, though, this just wasn’t his year.

Here is Gov. Walker’s statement when he “suspended” his campain. From The Hill:

[…] “The Bible is full of stories of people who were called to be leaders in unusual ways,” Walker said in prepared remarks at a press conference in Madison, Wis., referencing sitting in church the previous day.

“Today, I believe that I am being called to lead helping to clear the field in this race so that a positive, conservative message can rise to the top of the field,” Walker said.

“I encourage other Republican presidential candidates to consider doing the same, so the voters can focus on a limited number of candidates who can offer a positive, conservative alternative to the current frontrunner,” he said.

“We need to get back to the basics of our party,” the Wisconsin governor said.

“This is a difficult decision, as so many wonderful people stepped up to support our campaign,” Walker said, thanking his volunteers, staff and family.

“Most of all I want to thank God. I want to thank God for his abundant grace. Win or lose, it has always been more than enough,” Walker said. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

I think it is pretty clear about whom Gov. Walker was referring in his remarks. It is just a shame that such a solid, decent man who could have been a great President, with the will and ability to fight for what is right, is now out of the running.

It seems that Rubio may benefit from Gov. Walker’s dropping out of the race as this Politico article highlights (h/t Facebook friend): […]

Rubio has been moving aggressively to court Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s donors. The event comes a day after Walker’s decision to exit the race and after Rubio’s campaign poached Walker’s New Hampshire campaign co-chair, Cliff Hurst. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Oh, I am kinda burying the lead a little bit – Rep. Trey Gowdy is headlining a fundraiser for Rubio. Make of that what you will.

Meanwhile, in other news, the Pope is wrapping up his trip to Communist-ruled Cuba Not everyone is happy about the Pope’s activities while he was there, particularly the Cuban dissidents. The American Thinker has the story:

Pope Francis’s visit to Cuba is proving to be a very comfortable event for the brutally repressive and dictatorial regime. The closest thing, so far, to a challenge to the oppression of dissidents has been the invitation to a dissident group, The Ladies in White, to attend a cathedral service held by the pope. However, according to the U.K. Telegraph, 22 of 24 members of the group were detained by security police and could not attend. Other dissidents fared as badly:

Cuban authorities prevented leading dissidents from meeting Pope Francis in Havana on Sunday, in a sign of the Communist regime’s rigid intolerance of political opposition.

Two well-known dissidents, Marta Beatriz Roque and Miriam Leiva, had been invited by the Vatican to attend a vespers service led by the Pope’s in Havana’s historic baroque cathedral.

But they said they were detained by security agents and barred from attending the event.

“They told me that I didn’t have a credential and that I couldn’t go to the Pope’s event that was taking place there in the plaza of the Cathedral,” Ms Roque said.

She said that she and Ms Leiva had also been invited by the Vatican to meet Pope Francis at the residence of the Holy See’s ambassador to Cuba shortly after the pontiff’s arrival on Saturday, but that they were detained on that occasion as well.

But that did not affect the pontiff’s meetings with the Castro brothers…[…] (Click here to read the rest.)

And I think that is just sad. The Castros have ruled Cuba for decades now, and the people there have suffered tremendously as a result. To engage with the cruel dictators and NOT meet with the dissidents is troubling indeed…

And speaking of troubling, it is BEYOND troubling that we have a US service member who is being reprimanded for stopping an Afghan police commander for raping a BOY. But wait – it gets worse. From Fox News:

The Defense Department is facing mounting criticism for its handling of child abuse allegations involving Afghan commanders, including revived claims that U.S. soldiers were instructed to look the other way when Afghan troops and officers were sexually abusing boys.

As first reported by Fox News, the Army is under scrutiny for moving to kick out Green Beret Sgt. 1st Class Charles Martland, after he got in trouble for shoving an Afghan police commander accused of raping a boy.

Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis told reporters on Monday that the practices described in the Times article were “abhorrent” and pushed back on the notion that military members were told not to report instances of child rape.

“We have never had a policy in place that directs any military member or any government personnel overseas to ignore human rights abuses,” Davis said, noting rape is a violation of Afghan law.

But in a statement to Fox News, a spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan said servicemembers are not required to report child rape, either.

“[T]here would be no express requirement that U.S. military personnel in Afghanistan report it,” said Col. Brian Tribus. At the same time, Tribus said the military “expects that any suspicions of sexual abuse are immediately reported up the chain of command.”

Accounts from the field and in court documents, though, raise questions about what instructions American troops were really given. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

That there would be even the implication of allowing rape of children on US military bases in Afghanistan is appalling. Absolutely appalling. But that a Green Beret would be facing action for stopping the rape of a boy is obscene.

I do not know what is happening to our military, but there is no doubt that it has changed a LOT under this Administration. No doubt, the “purging” of many flag officers has had a major effect. But this cannot stand.

On a totally different note, I want to wish a blessed Yom Kippur to those here who celebrate it:

What is on your minds today? This is an Open Thread.

Personal Note: We get to go see Carly Fiorina and Rep. Mike Rogers speak at The Citadel at noon on National Security. So, I will be away from the computer for a bit. I will report back on what Fiorina has to say and how she is received by the Cadets of the Citadel.

I wish to thank you for the video of Carly on the Tonight Show. It was wonderful and so was she. If Hillary Clinton wants to appear more “spontaneous” she should take lessons from Carly.

Not a bad voice either. She grabbed the audience with no trouble at all. This woman has got “something”.

I think Scott Walker saw after the fiasco called a debate on CNN that he would get no attention. Media saw to that.

Without attention, connections, and without name in the news it is almost impossible to raise money. He couldn’t and so he graciously bowed out. Dems in Wisconsin are ecstatic. He got more attention for bowing out than he got for the past month in running.

    • foxyladi14 Says:

Still waiting for a real Debate, Marge. 😡

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I heard today on the way to see Carly (Oh.My. GOSH. She was fantastic. More on this later.) I heard Walker only got FOURTEEN MINUTES with the two debates COMBINED. That is incredible, especially for the man who had been leading Iowa. I guess since he isn’t flamboyant, or says crazy things, he didn’t merit any attention. Such a shame…

      • kenoshamarge Says:

The media wants Trump or Jeb to win. Hillary could most likely defeat both of them. As could Biden. And all the crazy Trump supporters are playing right into the Democrat/media hands.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I agree. That is exactly what is happening. I hope, hope, hope that others like Fiorina and Rubio will continue to rise, and Trump’s slide down will continue.

for all those who say we should take in thousands of syrian refugees when muslim countries will not ask yourself these questions

! why won’t other muslim countries take them?. and lest we forget history, in 1947 when Israel became a country, muslim countries would not take in the displaced muslims and we still have an ongoing fighting.

2 would you take in thousands of rattlesnakes into your home and embrace them and not expect to die?

Fiorina addressed this issue today. She said that granting Asylum status is an extensive process, thoroughly vetting those seeking asylum because they are being persecuted. She also said there is a BIG difference between persecuted, and wanting better economic potential. One deserves asylum; the other does not.

Fiorina also noted how Kerry and Obama magnanimously made this offer to happen close to or on the next President’s watch…

guess it now the military’s job to protect a traitor for political expediency

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

That is just the thing – they decided several years ago – the Defense Dep’t that is – that Bergdahl had deserted. That is why they stopped trying to find him. Absolutely Obama knew this. And General Dahl trying to portray Bergdahl as someone “who just wanted to reveal how poorly things were being run hence went to find some other camp 40 miles away so don’t throw him into prison” is covering for Obama and Obama alone. I bet the men who tried to find him, and the families of those who lost loved ones because of him, aren’t feeling quite so sorry for this deserter.

    • helenk3 Says:

American Airlines has apologized as they should

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yes, they should have. From the article, they said they were looking into what happened, and were not happy abt it. They flew the Marine and his family home after that, but yeah – it sounds like the one agent needs to be fired ASAP.

Oh, DANG, Marge – what a good one!!

I have been hearing lots of talk today abt how the Left is cherry-picking the things the Pope says, conveniently ignoring his comments on things like abortion.

      But what else is new?

      • kenoshamarge Says:

When the Pope has to enter the country claiming “not to be a liberal” you know that he’s already alienated many of his flock. Not to worry though, he can always fill the empty pews with illegals.

now that a city has been ruined and lives ruined what is mosley going to do next? go to disneyland?

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Wow. Just freakin’ WOW. You said it, all these lives RUINED by Mosby and the Mayor, businesses torched, crime up, all because Mosby played POLITICS instead of standing for JUSTICE. Just infuriating…

But here’s the thing. After every SINGLE one of these cases, truth wills out and shows these grandstanders for what they are – LYING CHARLATANS. So why in the HELL do people believe them in the FIRST place?? They were wrong abt Brown, wrong abt Gray, wrong abt Marting, wrong abt Garner – wrong, wrong, wrong. Yet they blow up these cities, the President speaks out abt the evils of racism, and on and on I could go, and every time their complaints are based on nothing more than rumor, hearsay, and a claim of racism. WOW.

  13. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Marge, I wanted to tell you that Suzy got a video of Fiorina’s closing remarks today. I thought of you SO much when she was talking after your previous comment abt being depressed abt all of this. I am going to upload it to Youtube so I can put it here. I think you will appreciate it!

Everyone else will too, I think! 🙂

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Thanks Rev. I now have Carly envy too.

I am depressed because of all the things I see happening to this country.

By the way, I watch Marco Rubio on Special Report tonight and was really impressed. He is articulate and well informed. I have to find a “new” candidate to care about even if it is destined to break my heart again. I have Carly but many on both the left and right are now swarming to take her down.

I cannot believe the women who have nothing but disdain for this woman and darn near worship a sexist pig. WTH????

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

LOL – I can appreciate that! Just you wait until tomorrow’s post. I think you will be pleased!

I wondered if you had seen Rubio. That is the man we saw here in Charleston. He is smart, no doubt abt it. And he knows his stuff. Add to that a clear love and appreciation for all this country has done for him and his family. How refreshing to have a candidate who expresses so much love for this country.

As for the women attacking Fiorina – yeah – pretty much exactly what they did to Clinton in 2008, then Palin in 2008 to now, and on I could go. It never ceases to amaze me how women can treat other women so horribly in defense of sexist men. Sheesh.

I wanted to share something I just got from the Arizona GOP (I get emails from them given my interest/support of Col. McSally). I think you are going to like this: AZGOP Straw Poll Results Posted
Following the second Republican Presidential Debate last Wednesday, the AZGOP conducted an online poll to see where candidates weighed in. Carly Fiorina took 1st place with 37 percent of the vote. In 2nd place was Donald Trump with 23 percent. 3rd place was Marco Rubio with 15 percent. Ted Cruz barely got the edge over Ben Carson to secure 4th Place with 7 percent. Ben Carson followed closely in 5th place with 6 percent. See how your favorite candidate did in the AZGOP Straw Poll.

Unions and progressives can gloat, but Walker’s returning to finish the job he started

Wisconsin radio talk show host Charlie Sykes interviewed Scott Walker confidante John Hiller on Walker’s decision to end the campaign, and on Walker’s future.

The money quote emphasized at Syke’s website, RightWisconsin, was that Walker “Was At Peace With the Whole Thing“:

John Hiller, a closer confidant of Scott Walker, told Charlie Sykes that the governor was at peace after making his decision to leave the presidential race.

“He was at peace with the whole thing. He probably handled it better than anyone at the table,” said Hiller.

Hiller, along with Walker’s wife Tonette, was in the room with a handful of close friends and advisors when Walker made his decision. Hiller said that Donald Trump, the 24 hour news cycle, the inability to raise money, and some missteps were the reasons Walker believed he no longer had a path to victory.

“This is a very similar scenario to 2006,” said Hiller. “When you don’t have a clear path to victory, it’s in everybody’s best interest to get out.”

But the line which jumped out at me, coming at the end of the interview and which Sykes also quoted, was:

“He loves being governor. I think you’ll see a renewed Scott Walker in the governor’s office.”

And gloating they are. The Dems couldn’t defeat Scott Walker but Trump loving Republicans and their media pals did. Ironic isn’t it?

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It sounds like Walker made the best decision for him and his family, not to mention Wisconsin. Just bad timing on a number of fronts, I think. BUT – it sounds like it is going to be very good for your state, Marge. There is comfort to be taken in that for sure!

  19. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

OHMYGOSH – if y’all haven’t seen this BuzzFeed video featuring Carly Fiorina, it is a HOOT:

The video was linked to in this good Federalist article abt Carly and the Gender Card:
