Foreign Policy and National Security With Carly Fiorina *Open Thread*

It was standing room only at the Altman Athletic Center at The Citadel. The attendees covered the gamut of young people (in addition to some Citadel cadets) to senior citizens to veterans. The event was put on by Americans for Peace, Prosperity, And Security, an organization founded by former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Rogers.

Still, it was a relatively informal event with just Carly Fiorina and the Hudson Institute‘s Arthur Herman, the Moderator. You may be familiar with some of Herman’s work at the National Review including his latest on ISIS, and other sites. He is a renowned historian. The questions asked of Fiorina were complex and she gave comprehensive answers to the questions asked (including some from the audience).

I found Fiorina to be brilliant in her thoughtful, considered responses. She is capable of laying out systematic and comprehensive responses and answers questions fully. She also has a tremendous amt of Foreign Policy and National Security experience, having advised and chaired committees for the CIA, NSA, Homeland Security, and advising two Secretaries of Defense. All that being said, she was also inspiring, and passionate abput this country. It was quite the hour.

But you don’t have to take my word for it. Thanks to one of our local news stations, WCBD, you can watch the ENTIRE Town Hall for yourselves. In fact, you will be able to see her better than I could since I was on the back row with a few young journalists/bloggers.

In any event, if you have an interest in Carly Fiorina and her potential to be President of the United States, I commend this to you:

From the beginning with the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance to the end, Fiorina demonstrated her grasp of the serious problems facing our nation, and the world.

But that wasn’t all Fiorina did. She also laid out her vision for this country, a country unique in all human history, as she said. She also demonstrated her love of this country, as well as a real compassion for the frustration, discontent, and yes, sadness many have about where we are now in this country, the way in which our elected officials act more for their own benefit than ours, thus letting us down time and time again. She offered words of comfort, words of hope, and words of inspiration that we have the tools in this country to fix what is wrong and get back on the right track.

Carly Fiorina was, in short, brilliant, well versed, knowledgeable, patriotic, powerful, and riveting. The time flew by, and the hour was up way too soon. She is a serious woman, and a serious contender for the position she seeks. It will be something to see how this campaign turns outs, but I think we would be well served to have Fiorina at the helm.

How about you? What were your impressions? Feel free to discuss any of the above, or the Pope’s visit, or whatever else is on your minds. This is an Open Thread.

Sorry to start the thread on with this sad news

Yogi Berra dead . May he RIP

It is sad news, indeed. He was not only a great Yankees player – helping the Yanks to win TEN World Series rings, but he was also a Navy Vet who served in WWII. He will be missed…

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I just received an email from the Yankees about Berra’s passing: Yankees honor Yogi’s legacy
“Yogi Berra’s legacy transcends baseball. Though slight in stature, he was a giant in the most significant of ways through his service to his country, compassion for others and genuine enthusiasm for the game he loved. He has always been a role model and hero that America could look up to.

“While his baseball wit and wisdom brought out the best in generations of Yankees, his imprint in society stretches far beyond the walls of Yankee Stadium. He simply had a way of reaching and relating to people that was unmatched. That’s what made him such a national treasure.

“On behalf of my family and the entire Yankees organization, we extend our deepest condolences to Yogi’s family, friends and loved ones.”

        – Statement from Hal Steinbrenner
New York Yankees Managing General Partner / Co-Chairperson

The Yankees will wear No. 8 on their left jersey sleeves for tonight’s game.

I envy you seeing her in person. And yes I know that “envy” is considered one of the 7 deadly sins:

The seven deadly sins viewed by society and literature are:

    • Lust – to have an intense desire or need: “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28).

    • Gluttony – excess in eating and drinking: “for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags” (Proverbs 23:21).

    • Greed – excessive or reprehensible acquisitiveness: “Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more” (Ephesians 4:19).

    • Laziness – disinclined to activity or exertion: not energetic or vigorous: “The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway” (Proverbs 15:19).

    • Wrath – strong vengeful anger or indignation: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15:1)

    • Envy – painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with a desire to possess the same advantage: “Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation” (1 Peter 2:1-2).

    • Pride – quality or state of being proud – inordinate self esteem: “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).

What are the seven detestable sins according to the Bible?

“There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers” (Proverbs 6:16-19).

So I guess, according to the Bible, I am not guilty of sinning for being a little envious that you got to see Carly in person and I did not. Especially since I don’t wish you didn’t get to go, I just wish I could have gone too. Thank goodness because I have enough “splaining” to do when my time comes. But about that “wrath” thing…

    1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I completely understood what you meant, and I wish you (all) could have been there, too. It was quite the event. Though I had to take issue with my daily paper, The Post and Courier, for this headline: Fiorina at Citadel Takes a Jab At Trump.” Out of the entire HOUR she spoke, she made one comment abt Trump, and that had to do with Illegal Immigration. She said that contrary to Trump’s claims, he is NOT the first one to discuss Illegal Immigration. It is a discussion we have been having for 25 yrs. Talk abt your cherry picking to rile people up. As you can see for yourselves in the video above, she was straight forward, eloquent, and extremely knowledgeable abt the subject matters at hand, yet the writer narrowed in on this ONE small comment. WOW.

Anywho – thank you for laying out the Seven Deadly Sins, and the Biblical sins. As we are still in the time of repentance for Yom Kippur, what better time to take stock of those things for which we need to repent? 😀

It’s Not Fiorina Who Is Wrong in the Planned Parenthood Fight

    By Jonah Goldberg

Most of the videos involve hidden-camera conversations with current Planned Parenthood managers, as well as interviews with veterans of the abortion industry, discussing the selling of fetal body parts for research purposes. The video Fiorina probably had in mind included eyewitness descriptions accompanied by borrowed footage of a fetus dying in a metal bowl, its leg kicking, to illustrate the witness’s recollection of seeing precisely that in another case. That sort of juxtaposition might not fly on the nightly news, but it’s the sort of dramatic device used in documentaries all the time. It’s akin to a documentary maker interviewing a witness to Cecil the Lion getting shot, and using footage of another lion getting shot as an illustration. Fiorina’s critics want to claim that because she didn’t take into account these distinctions, she’s just making stuff up.

To this end they’ve become Jesuitical nitpickers, muddying the water to conceal the fact that late-term abortions offend the conscience when discussed or displayed with anything like journalistic accuracy. That’s probably why we get so little of it. Many of the media outlets that even bother to cover the videos have referred to the transferring of “fetal tissue,” not “organs” — the correct term for livers, hearts and brains. (“Tissue” is less suggestive of a human being than, say, “heart.”)

We’re also often informed that the videos weren’t merely “edited” but “highly edited.” Left out of such caveats is that the news reports passing along these descriptions come via highly edited newspapers, radio, and TV programs.

Jonah, like Fiorina is right. And the left wouldn’t bother to use euphemisms if they didn’t know that the correct terms would offend and show them to be the barbarians that they are. And Clinton lied? Imagine that, not happening that is.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Jonah does it again. And they ARE both right. I am so disgusted over the recent votes on 20 week bans and what amts to infanticide if a fetus survives the abortion. How in the world did we GET to this place in this country?!?

Anyway – great piece – thanks for this!

  4. helenk3 Says:

    check this guy out

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Aha. I wish I could say this surprised me, but it doesn’t – that there was a plant, and that the MSM has done nothing to ferret him out…

  5. foxyladi14 Says:

    Welcome Pope Francis. 🙂

  6. kenoshamarge Says:

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Honest to pete, that is so accurate after seeing this morning’s front page headline abt Fiorina’s event yesterday: “Fiorina at Citadel: Takes Jab At Trump.” SERIOUSLY?? She mentioned, in PASSING, as she was discussing illegal immigration, that Trump was NOT the one to begin a discussion on this, that it has been going on for 25 yrs. That was IT. Out of an HOUR. And that is what they put as the HEADLINE. The article was even worse, though, focusing more on Trump. I wrote them at Facebook and let them have it for this “journalism” that should have been in the Opinion Section. WOW.

  7. kenoshamarge Says:

Pope at White House lecturing on Climate Change. Doesn’t seem to give a crap about abortions and selling baby body parts. Sad day for me as a Catholic. Send the old fool back where he came from.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, good grief. I cannot believe he is doing Obama’s bidding on this front. UGH.

So, nothing abt the Dems voting down the 20 week ban? Wow…

I am sorry, Marge – I can imagine how difficult this is for you.

  8. helenk3 Says:

    trump to boycott Fox News.

Humming Charlie Brown as I read

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I just heard Bret Baier speak abt this. Apparently, this is because Trump was taken off O’Reilly’s show on Thurs. I don’t know WHY he was, but the panel all said this kind of thing happens all the time, often when they are already int he Green Room. Rather than being an ADULT abt it, he blew a gasket. As always.

  9. kenoshamarge Says:

If you didn’t already think that Trump supporters were as crazy and delusional as Obama supporters just read the comments on this article. If you have a strong stomach.

Donald Trump Boycotts FOX News – Will NO LONGER Do Any More FOX News Shows

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

All I could think when I read a couple of articles on this was, “THANK HEAVENS!!!” Ahem. What a whiny, thin-skinned, bullying, antagonistic, sexist CHILD he is. Fox has been VERY good to him, much to my annoyance. If this is how they repay him the numerous minutes of free ad time, then that should say something to people.

Well, people except for his supporters, that is. I started to read some of the comments at a Western Journalism take on this and had to stop. WOW. WOW. WOW.

Oh, and not for nothing, but this should tell people PLENTY abt his temperament that he is running so many people down based on nothing but LIES, like his idiotic claim abt Carly outsourcing her campaign. Now she has to deal with crap like that and even though it is absolutely not true, his minions will sure believe it:

  10. helenk3 Says:

this is going to get real interesting, real soon
Germany announces massive plan to deport illegals

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Germany and other EU countries will find out that once these people get in it isn’t all the easy to get them out. Merkel allowed the flood and now its to late to turn back the water.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Uh, yeah – it is gonna be very hard indeed to get those folks out now. Good luck with that…

  11. kenoshamarge Says:

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It is rather confusing, isn’t it? Dana Perino pointed that out the other day – why were Dems acting like it was SO bad that Obama was called a Muslim all things considered. Just more of their standard Hypocrisy, though the cartoon said it much better than I just did!

Cry baby Trump at it again. As Lowry notes in one of his tweets, Trump can dish it out but he sure can’t take it.

Donald Trump wants National Review’s Rich Lowry banned from TV, fined by FCC

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I just happened to catch Lowry’s comment last night when the rerun of Kelly’s show came on. I thought she was going to go through the floor. Now, I don’t know why anything he said would be worthy of a fine, and i have to say, it was quite a statement by Lowry, wasn’t it?! Holy smokes.

I have to appreciate Lowry’s calling Trump out for being the big, whiny, bully, baby that he is. He cannot STAND it when anyone has the audacity to say ANYTHING against him, and his reaction to Lowry highlights that. Wanting to have him banned – please…

  15. kenoshamarge Says:

Pope Francis visits Little Sisters of the Poor, who sued over ACA contraception mandate

If Obama thinks he got one over on the Pope by loading the dinner with people that that Catholic Church does not support then it would appear that the Pope got his own back by showing Obama’s “religious freedom” rhetoric to be the bullshit it is. I still don’t “like” Pope Francis but I do “like” this move.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

My upcoming post is on the Pope. And yes, like most people, the Pope is multi-faceted. Glad he made clear to the President where he stood on this…

FYI after the Milwaukee Braves became the Atlanta Braves I became a Cub fan. Being a Cub fan is easy because you never really expect too much of them but can still enjoy the game.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

LOL – I know, those poor Cubbies. If ever there was a team that has had way too much bad luck, it would be them!

  19. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

For those who are interested, Fiorina was on O’Reilly last night (h/t Facebook friend for this):

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Excellent answers to O’Reilly’s questions. I still don’t know why candidates have to answer questions about what other candidates say or do. That’s just an attempt to get them fighting which makes for better ratings.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I thought so too abt Fiorina’s answers. And no doubt, these tv folks are trying to gin up ratings. It takes discipline to not fall into those traps, and I thought Fiorina did a good job of that.
