News That Makes Me Exclaim, “Are You KIDDING Me With This?” *Open Thread*

There is no shortage of news that is making me do that these days, so I will narrow it down to a few.

First up are the striking teachers in Detroit. Oh, they have all kinds of demands, including the usual – MORE PAY! Better Working Environments! And they are staging walkouts across the city.

But here is the thing. The students in Detroit are essentially illiterate. Only 8% percent – that is EIGHT percent – are functionally literate. And that is not all that is going on there. From the Daily Signal:

[…] According to the U.S. Department of Education, just 8 percent of Detroit eighth-graders can read proficiently. Eight percent.

And just seven in 10 students graduate.

But lack of progress is due not to a lack of resources in Detroit public schools, which spend roughly $16,000 per pupil per year. According to the Mackinac Center and a separate analysis by Randan Steinhauser:

– About 75 percent of the annual District budget goes toward paying employees covered by its current collective bargaining agreement for teachers.

– Out of a new $7,450-per-pupil grant the Detroit school district will receive this year, $4,400 will be spent on debt servicing and benefits for teachers who have retired.

The average Detroit Public Schools (DPS) superintendent makes between $121,091 and $178,871 a year.

– The superintendent can select up to two “professional associations” (unions) to be a member of each year, and the district (taxpayers) will reimburse his membership dues.

– DPS has a debt of over $3.5 billion, which includes unfunded pension liabilities.

Funneling money into a mismanaged school system has not created an environment conducive to improving academic achievement in Detroit. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

And they want RAISES??? I think they should be FIRED and a whole new crop of teachers brought in. If that many children cannot read, these teachers have failed them in every way, shape, and form. In my opinion, that is.

Then there is this little bombshell about the continuing impact of Obamacare. From The Federalist:

[…] But, wait—how can all these plans have the same gross cost of $1,060 a month? How can a plan with great benefits have a gross cost of $1,060 per month for a family earning $40,000 per year, while a family earning $60,000 per year gets far worse benefits at the same gross cost?

Was this just a problem with one insurance provider? No—I did similar research with other providers, and found the same result. I struggled to believe this until I dug deep into a brochure available from MDWise, another insurance provider. In its brochure, the company shows many attractive Silver Plan options, then notes: “You only qualify for one of the Silver Plan options. It is based on your income.”

Earn More Money, Get Worse Healthcare

Then it dawned on me: the Democrats had struck again. It wasn’t enough to merely grant subsidies to lower-income people so they could buy coverage. No, lower-income earners deserved better coverage, too. The incentive was clear: earn less and get better benefits. Earn more, and pay the price with worse insurance coverage. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

I know exactly what the author means. We now have the Bronze level of insurance. As I have said before, we are paying much more for much less with higher premiums and deductibles. Apparently, we are making sure those who don’t earn as much have BETTER coverage than we have. There is something SERIOUSLY wrong with that…

And there is something seriously wrong with a former Secretary of State who now appears so utterly clueless about the most Top Secret intelligence around according to an Inspector General. From ABC News:

Some of the classified emails found on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s home server were even more sensitive than top secret, according to an inspector general for the intelligence community.

Inspector General Charles I. McCullough sent a letter to lawmakers last Friday saying that several dozen additional classified emails have been found, including ones containing information from so-called “special access programs.” Intelligence officials say special access programs have a higher classification than top secret because they are about highly sensitive programs and could reveal sources of information. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

And Hillary’s response? The IG is a rightwinger (that’s hyperbole on my part) who wants to damage her and, um, yeah, so there. Nothing to see here, move along, move along!

But wait – there is some good news in all of this. And that would be the response of the President of Oberlin College, who apparently said to the students making all kinds of demands, “are you kidding me with this?” The Daily Caller has the story:

Oberlin College’s president released a statement refusing to even consider a 14-page list of demands submitted by student activists, one of the most significant shows of defiance in the past few months to a wave of intense campus activism.

The list of demands at Oberlin, released in mid-December, is one of the most extreme seen at any college in the past two months. Among other things, the list demands the firing of several school employees, creation of segregated black-only safe spaces, a school stipend for protest leaders, and the creation of a bridge program to educate released convicts at the school. The list’s authors are anonymous, but several hundred students signed a Google Doc endorsing it.

Now, over a month later, Oberlin president Marvin Krislov has responded with a harsh tone. In his response, Krislov says the tone of the demands is utterly unacceptable, even if the document raises some valid concerns. As a result, he simply refused to directly engage with any of the list’s demands. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

FINALLY!! Finally a college president is standing up to the whining, juvenile demands of these exceedingly coddled young people! Yay for President Krislov!

Okay, that’s it for me. What’s on your minds today? This is an Open Thread.

More news from the crazies on the left in Michigan:

    The Democrats’ Filthy Flint Water

Dirty politics lead to dirty water.

    By Daniel Greenfield

Mayor Dayne Walling, a Democrat, led a cheerful countdown at the Flint water treatment plant to press the button moving the city over to river water. Walling and Darnell Earley, the Democratic emergency manager, even raised glasses in a toast and drank the water to show that it was safe.

“It’s a historic moment for the city of Flint to return to its roots and use our own river as our drinking water supply,” Walling said. “The water quality speaks for itself.”

Flint’s city council had voted in favor of the move 7-1. Despite claims about the power of the emergency manager, the switch could not have gone forward without that vote.

Even once the problem had surfaced, the EPA knew and kept quiet. It was only once the crisis broke, that the Democratic establishment attempted to redirect the blame at Michigan’s efforts to fix broken Democratic cities like Flint using emergency managers. The war against the emergency managers is not about clean water; it’s about protecting the dirty Democratic politics that destroyed these cities.

Are there no Democrats anywhere that will take responsibility for their mistakes? Must they always blame someone else and that someone usually the nearest Republican?

The continual finger pointing from those in Flint to the man in the Oval Office are now a tired, and tiresome, old tactic that only brain dead Dems believe.

I thought this Pam Gellar piece was very good.

    Sarah Palin Jumps the Shark

    By Pamela Geller

I am sure there are a great many conservatives who were deeply disappointed with Sarah Palin’s endorsement of Donald Trump Tuesday. It was hard on the ears and harder on the heart. If anything, Sarah Palin and Donald Trump made look more presidential.

I do question her motives, because while Donald Trump is many things, one thing he most assuredly is not is a conservative. He isn’t. And that was always Palin’s touchstone — true conservatism. Until now.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I question her motives, too. It makes ZERO sense for her to support Donald politically. Zero.

Gellar gets it right on this for sure.

  3. kenoshamarge Says:

And I forgot to add my applause for the President of Oberlin College. Good for him! Unless the rest of academia takes a stand they will find the inmates running the asylum. Although given the Presidents of many colleges it will be difficult to see any difference.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Wasn’t that great? Good for him indeed. And you are right – if they don’t, what these kids will learn is that they can force adults to cave to their most outrageous demands…

  4. mcnorman Says:

The incentive was clear: earn less and get better benefits. Earn more, and pay the price with worse insurance coverage.

BINGO!!! And this is ONLY the stuff that you can access. I get to deal with what they do behind the closed door. I got a call from someone who had a decent plan at some point with their small business. After a lengthy discussion, I asked this person to call their plan and ask if a certain reconstructive (and very medically necessary procedure) was covered. The answer was no longer was it covered because in order to save money on their plan (to give to those who make less money and want the same things), they were opted out of this VERY important procedure. Ogarbagecare strikes again. Do you believe that the congresscritters that have a nice federal indemnity plan would eat what they gave us?

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, hell no. And I think anyone who voted FOR this monstrosity should be FORCED to accept it. That goes for the freakin’ unions which helped shove it down our throats and who are now trying to get out of it for themselves. Jackalopes.

Terrible abt the needed surgery being taken out. “Ogarbargecare” sums it up PERFECTLY!!!

      • mcnorman Says:

That’s right, if they voted for the tripe they should have to partake in the trough as well. They kept their great indemnity plans. We are the taxpaying citizen that pays for them to have it. NOTHING has been opted out for them. Their share of the cost is up a wee bit, but that is it. Oh, and they don’t have to beg for services that are standard and common.

I am no fire right now. I have an insurer telling me that what they approved (cancerous tumor removals), they only want to pay for one. Yup, its a battle for the serious stuff as well. Insurers are the Devil.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Of course they don’t. Had this bill now law ever been read and debated on, maybe, just MAYBE, that would have gotten in there. But why in the hell Congress thinks they are exempt from the laws they want to impose on us is beyond me. How did we ever get to THAT place??

Wait, WHAT?? You have GOT to be kidding me abt the tumor removal!! That is CRIMINAL.

          • mcnorman Says:

They made sure that they could “opt” in if they wanted to so that they could tell the public that they were in it for the long haul. Liars. Our lying sob congresscritter was moving into Medicare so his false story about switching to ogarbagecrap was phony.

Yes, I am now going to the Dept of Insurance to fight the insurer. They approved two cancer tumor removals, but they only want to pay for one. What the heck does that mean? It means that surgeons will take out one tumor at a time. It means that these people will have to wait 90 days on a global after a surgery before they can have the other one taken out because I don’t know of many surgeons that want to work for free.

  5. mcnorman Says:

Oh, every plan under BCBS in the marketplace was moved into an HMO in my state. The deductible is $3500.00. It’s high so that no one uses it because there are no more copays under the garbage plan. The $3500.00 is basically given a provider discount (who does the work? insurer or doc?). I despise Congress and the thing that sits in the WH. If they had truly wanted to give everyone access to healthcare, we would have gone on a single payor system. Instead, they pickpocketed the citizens pockets to pay the insurance companies for what?

    • mcnorman Says:

Oh, I know that answer…to tell you no. That is what ogarbagecare subsidized the insurance companies for.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Good grief. It really does just get worse and worse, doesn’t it? Just a couple of years ago, we had GOOD coverage – it was more expensive thanks to “Ogarbagecare.” mind you, but at least our out of pocket expenses weren’t TOO bad. Don’t get me wrong – still up there, but NOTHING compared to what it is now. At this point, I hesitate to use it because the out-of-pocket expenses are SO high. Ugh.

      • mcnorman Says:

I know. I have watched over two decades the demise of what we used to have. And I resent to no end having to subsidize those who refused to take care of themselves and are now digging into all of our pockets. This is an equalizer situation…we all get to pay for junk. Even the catastrophic plans are opting out of stuff. Mind you it is stuff that they probably wouldn’t pay out anyway. We have school districts locally that refuse to pay for certain procedures that are common and medically necessary for women. They don’t have a problem paying for Viagra though. Again, it is the taxpayer that is subsidizing this.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It is infuriating, isn’t it? I just cannot get over the lack of work ethic in our country now. Just the other night when we were at the airport, an older American Airlines employee said to us that young people these days just want a paycheck, but they don’t want to EARN it.

That seems to be the case for too many Americans now, from Obamacare to their support of a SOCIALIST.

Great, great points on the insurance issues facing us now. Thank you for sharing your expertise here!

some interesting info on common core

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Holy smokes. As if we needed any MORE reason to dislike Common Core. WOW. What arrogance, and what a deplorable agenda they are forcing on our people.

  8. helenk3 Says:

    about time

  9. helenk3 Says:

    our taxes pay these scumbags

  10. helenk3 Says:

EPA official resigns over Flint water problem.
just announced on FOX. should be more info later

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

They kept saying she was fired, but she resigned. I assume that means she gets to keep all of her benefits?

There are so many people who should be held to account, but my bet is that the Reps are going to take it the worst even though Dems were he ones who first decided to do this, and ignored their people REPEATEDLY. Hillary sure didn’t call THEM out…

And the Trump con continues. As you likely know, he is attacking Cruz for getting loans from Goldman-Sachs, where Cruz’s wife worked. Well, guess who ELSE got loans from Goldman-Sachs and Citi? Yep – Donald Trump. Thanks to a Facebook friend for this Redstate piece:

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Thanks for the link. Another bit of ammunition to use against the Trumpkins. Not that it does any good – they are as impervious to reason as Obots. But it does help me release some of my frustration with idiots that choose a candidate and thereafter refuse to accept the flaws and facts.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yeah, I know they won’t care one whit, but those of us who DO care abt facts will. Just more reason to not succumb to the bluster and bullying of Donald Trump (more on this in the upcoming post).

  12. mcnorman Says:

    Cruz got dumped.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Holy cow. Well, I guess he doesn’t want to be on the Congressional gravy train ride. At least that is ONE Congressman who knows how it feels…

      Thanks for this!
