Snowy Weather Weekend Open Thread

by

Well, here we are with another big snow storm blanketing the East Coast, or parts of it anyway. Well, maybe not so much where we are, though we did have some (very) light flurries here Saturday morning. Mainly, we are just getting a bunch of rain. I should say, MORE rain. Ugh. The worst part about it is the impact it continues to have on the horses at the barn, including our beloved Jordan. The seemingly incessant rain we are getting is affecting the horses’ coats and hooves in a BIG way, and Jordan is no exception. We have taken to calling him “Fuzzy Wuzzy” since he has had to have a bit of a shave. It is even worse on the hooves of these horses. There just isn’t a whole lot to be done for it, unfortunately. Weather just IS.

But in my home town of Charlotte, NC, they are getting a fair bit of snow. I am sure those of you who routinely have snow will find this anecdote from my childhood a bit funny. One year when I was in elementary school, we got two inches of snow – TWO WHOLE INCHES!! Naturally, we were outside making snowmen, running inside for hot chocolate, all of that good stuff. And we were out of school for a WEEK. I swear. An entire week. It is Charlotte, after all, and we aren’t exactly used to big snow storms, ergo, we don’t have the equipment to move it either. Back then, that was especially true, not to mention some of the more rural areas that were two lane, hilly roads. They just stayed too icy for the school buses to travel around them safely. That might be less true now, but still – it is a HUGE event for us.

And as you have no doubt heard, Washington, DC, is just about shut down.  I don’t want to make too light of this, since they are calling it a “life and death blizzard,” one of “historical” proportions, for the Northeast. Flights have been canceled, road conditions deteriorated, and the wind isn’t helping matters.

That said, I appreciate that many of y’all who routinely live with snow are thinking this is just, well, normal. I don’t think the media ever freaks out this much about Wisconsin or Minnesota getting feet of snow. But we aren’t used to it, that is for sure, and too many people haven’t the foggiest (!) how to drive in it, or have the sense to stay off the roads because they don’t know how to drive in it or they know others don’t know how to drive in it. Hopefully, not too many people will lose power – a big problem, especially if they don’t have alternate sources of heat.

But since it is going to be a cold, snowy weekend, I have a couple of things to share with you to bring a smile to your faces as the insanity of the Campaigns and fallout from Obama’s policies, particularly in regard to Iran, continue.

Along those lines, let me just say, the Congress sure as hell better step in to thwart Obama’s moves to make it easier for IRANIANS to get Visas into the USA. His attempts to undermine United States’ National Security are astonishing. And to cave to YET another demand from Iran is just mind-boggling.

But no more so than the affirmation of what many of us knew would happen with this whole Iran deal and the money they were going to get. Sec. John Kerry had to acknowledge that, um, uh, yeah – terrorist groups in Iran are gonna get their hands on some of that loot. AWESOME!!! Way to go! Thanks so much for keeping Americans safe – NOT.

Ugh. It is definitely time to take a break from all of this political insanity, don’t you think? Let’s begin with this heartwarming story about a young woman who is a gymnast. But that isn’t all of her story. From HuffPo:

[…] According to a blog from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Katherine was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia back in 2011. The gymnast and avid CrossFitter needed her leg amputated after doctors discovered an infection in her knee joint. Since then she’s been through remission, relapse and is now once again in remission. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Seeing is believing. Check out Katherine’s balance beam routine below:

Isn’t that just great? Good for her for getting back up on the beam. Heaven knows, that isn’t easy with two real legs, much less a prosthetic. The courage, tenacity, and grace this young woman demonstrates is moving indeed…

And then there is this. A friend had this up at Facebook. It is just TOO cute not to share for a Weekend Open Thread:

Isn’t that so cute?? I love kittens. I mean, really, who doesn’t? AND  studies show that watching all these cat videos are GOOD for you. Bonus, right?

I bet watching goat videos are ALSO good for you, especially baby goats in PAJAMAS:

C’mon, how CUTE is that?! They are fast little things, too. I just love watching them bouncing all around. Adorable! And there are a TON of cute videos of these little bouncing babies. So, so cute.

Well, that’s it for me. I hope you all are safe, sound, and WARM. Feel free to share stories, music, or cute videos. This is the Weekend Open Thread.

Further evidence that the Trump campaign is worse than we thought. Check out Trump’s SPOKESWOMAN and what she really thinks. It is telling indeed: http://dailycaller.com/2016/01/22/trump-spox-malcolm-x-is-my-idol-republicans-are-racist/

    Amy,
Stay warm and inside until the storm subsides. We also have ‘people’ aka drivers out on snowy days/nights who have no business being there as they seem to be slow learners having to learn the same lesson every year of how to drive in snow like slow down especially if you have a truck or svu, no bumper riding, be attentive no texting or phoning, clear off snow from vehicle even roof and so forth.
BTW – thanks for video laughs. Here’s mine

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks so much, piper – we are fine. No snow, the sun is shining (more or less), and all is well. It is cold, especially for us, and windy as hell, but no crazy weather here. Thank heavens for that! Still, we have no plans today, especially since Suzy is getting over having a fever and being sick (it broke last night, thank heavens). So we will be staying in this weekend.

Hope YOU are safe and warm! I totally hear you abt the crazy drivers, especially the ones who fail to learn their lessons.

And speaking of drivers, just terrible what is going on KY with all those drivers stuck on the side of the road. Don’t know why they were out there in the first place, but I sure hope they all make it out safely.

And Marge, the Panthers Stadium looks more like Green Bay’s stadium now! Even though I am a Charlotte native, I am not a fan of the way this team is acting. Their arrogance and poor sportsmanship are beyond the pale. And their coach supports it, with which I have huge problems. Cannot stand these arrogant, preening players. OH – and their QB, Newton, named his son – wait for it – CHOSEN. Can you GET more arrogant than that?? Wow.

You have GOT to be kidding me. I swear, these people have ZERO since of proportion. Hillary is sitting in a nice warm room, with breaks, snacks, water, photo ops, blah, blah, blah, and Bill is in essence comparing that to what the brave warriors who tried to save a US Ambassador went through?? Holy SMOKES…

And more abt Trump. Didn’t the Dems make a similar mistake in one of their campaign ads? Maybe they are using the same people. Ahem: http://www.aol.com/article/2016/01/23/donald-trump-pulls-veterans-ad-after-using-footage-of-russian-so/21301776/

You Know You’re in the Trump Cult When…

At a campaign rally in Iowa on Saturday GOP frontrunner Donald Trump bragged about how loyal his followers are.

“I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters,” Trump boasted, as he formed his fingers into the shape of a gun and pointed at the crowd.

It’s pointless to try to have a conversation with Trump’s ardent followers. They are card-carrying members of Trump’s cult of personality now, and I fear they’re not coming back. You can’t reason people out of something they haven’t been reasoned into.

OHMYGOSH – you put this up a few minutes before I added an article from The Hill on this. I hadn’t gotten notice of your comment yet, so had no idea this was up here. We are so on the same wavelength this morning! 😀

That said, it truly is a cult following with Trump. I might have to reprise my former Obama Cult piece and just change the names…

the wind is so strong at the Wildwood NJ boardwalk that it is turning the ferris wheel.
my youngest grand daughter is stuck at work due the flooding in Stone Harbor NJ. Her friend’s truck is under water so they are stuck

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Ohmygosh, Helen! That is crazy abt the ferris wheel!

From what I saw on the news, it sure loks bad up in NJ. So sorry your granddaughter is stuck at work, AND that her friend’s truck is flooded. Good grief! I hope she, and her friend, get home safely!

  9. helenk3 Says:

my daughter called a friend to see how he was doing during the storm.
he told he is at a hotel in Wildwood, in a jacuzzi watching the ocean. The gym and jacuzzi are on the top floor of the hotel and have windows overlooking the ocean.

this has to be the smartest guy in the room. He knows how to weather a storm

  10. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

ROTFL, Helen – you are so right. What a smart guy!! Sounds like he knows JUST how to ride out this snow!

  13. kenoshamarge Says:

I was appalled last week at Judge Jeanine’s attack on Nikki Halley. This week it became apparent she’s just another Trumpkin. There goes all my respect for her. Truth to tell I had pretty much stopped watching her rant at the start of her show. It had become tiresome. Reminded me of Keith Olbermann and his outrage for ratings rants.

I much prefer to watch Harris Faulkner on “The Fox Report” on Sunday night. She’s less bombastic and more information orientated. Judge Jeanine was losing this viewer – now she’s lost her for good. I never go back once they’ve shown me something about themselves I really don’t like and once their “shtick” has become boring.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Are you kidding me?? She supports TRUMP??? I cannot believe that, Marge. Seriously?? Wow. Just wow. I have lost all respect for her if that is the case. Good. Grief.

I love Harris Faulkner. She has quite the history, having been a back up dancer for Janet Jackson (video below), and more. Plus, I like that she keeps her Southern accent. She is also funny as hell, always a bonus for me. But in terms of news, she is more objective, and I like that very much.

Oh, good point abt the Olbermann/Pirro rant. I can see that…

      Here’s the video:

      • kenoshamarge Says:

The outrage against Nikki Haley is mind-blowing to me. What did she say? “The loudest voice isn’t always the right voice”. And that causes attacks from the right? I agreed with that completely. I prefer politicians in the Walker/Mitch Daniels style. Less “Hollywood” and more facts.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I don’t get it either. It is just ridiculous. She is RIGHT, not for nothing! And that goes for BOTH sides of the aisle, which people seem to forget. These people are so thin-skinned, it is insane. People in this country have just lost the edge…

  14. kenoshamarge Says:

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

This is absolutely spot on. It could not be any clearer than this.

Btw, Marge, it is good to *see* you. With all this bad weather and your history, I was getting a little worried. 🙂

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Weather here hasn’t been too bad. Haven’t been feeling very good lately. Trouble breathing and my used to be good leg but they stripped the veins out and now it’s my bad leg is causing some problems. I also haven’t been exercising like I should, because of breathing problems, so then I get weak. It’s all a Mobius strip of problems which I’m sure you are all too familiar with.

I am also so damn sick of this cult of Trump and the Trumpkins that I know it raises my blood pressure which is a whole nother problem.

So I’ve been sitting quietly and reading the Elizabeth Moon trilogy “Sheepfarmer’s Daughter, Divided Allegiance and Oath of Gold.”

Breathing is better today. Disgust with politics is not.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, Marge – I am sorry to hear you haven’t been feeling well. I know it must be troubling to you beyond the immediate physical aspects of it all. Bless your heart (!!!!), I sure hope this is just a passing phase in your recovery.

And I am right there with you abt the Trump cult. I can barely even watch Fox any more. Right now, I have on “Alaska, the Last Frontier” (Jewel’s family), and plan to watch a Hallmark movie soon. I am just so sick of hearing Trump’s name and seeing his arrogant face everywhere, I could scream. So, since both Suzy and I have been a bit under the weather (well, Suzy was VERY much under the weather at the end of the week with a fever and all of that – now I have a major cough. Fun! Ahem.), we have found other things to watch. And I have a JD Robb book to finish, too.

Then there is football later on today. I am pulling for the Broncos because I like Peyton Manning, and hate the Pats. We will watch the Panthers and the Cardinals, but honestly – I hope the Panthers lose. Cam Newton’s arrogant, unsportsmanlike behavior and taunting of his opponents is unseemly, and is an incredibly bad role model for young people. Like these young athletes don’t already have a bit of an attitude, they see someone like Newton being glorified for his dancing and first down moves, and being a jackass to the other team, and think that is the way to go. It isn’t. Heck, not even Tom Brady, whom I do NOT like, does not act like that. No one else does. That kind of cockiness and poor sportsmanship is getting way out of hand, and I do NOT understand why everyone LOVES Cam so much. Schmuck.

I guess I am just too old school, huh?

Anyway – I hope you and Lou have a good day, that you feel better soon, and enjoy your trilogy!

The Other Reason The Washington Elite Hate Ted Cruz

    By Ben Domenech

For the candidate in second in this presidential race, Ted Cruz, there has been some smart writing of late about why – despite his obviously more robust conservative credentials and a resume that looks far more presidential – Washington Republicans give the appearance of being so much more open to the prospect of a Trump nomination than they are to Cruz. Jonathan Martin writes on the issue here.

“[T]he cadre of Republican lobbyists, operatives and elected officials based in Washington are much more unnerved by Mr. Cruz, a go-it-alone, hard-right crusader who campaigns against the political establishment and could curtail their influence and access, building his own Republican machine to essentially replace them… “Trump won’t do long-lasting damage to the G.O.P. coalition,” said John Feehery, a Capitol Hill aide turned lobbyist. “Cruz will.”

    http://thefederalist.com/2016/01/22/the-other-reason-the-washington-elite-hate-ted-cruz/

I found this a fascinating article because it says what I think but don’t have the ability to articulate.

There is something fundamentally “wrong” with the so-called hate Washington supposedly has for Cruz. Disagree with him? Yes that’s certainly appropriate but “hate”?

There’s more here than meets the eyes and ears IMO. Domenech’s ideas explain that.

  16. kenoshamarge Says:

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Ben Domenech is brilliant, isn’t he? I think he has nailed this right on the head. They FEAR Cruz, hence their hate of Cruz. He is not beholden to them, and they know it. He might, just MIGHT, actually get some things done in DC that would upset their apple cart and affect their cushy way of life in DC.

Thanks so much for this, Marge!

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I read everything that Ben Domenech writes. I don’t always agree with him but everything he writes is reasons and fact filled. David Harsanyi is another writer I like.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Right there with you. I don’t always agree with him either, but he is a SMART man, so I enjoy reading what he writes. (A friend in Law Enforcement mentioned the other day that he and Domenech are good friends after I put up a Domenech article. How cool is that? The friend has testified before Congress and has appeared on a number of news shows discussing law enforcement. Cool, right?)

  17. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Glenn Beck did something he has never done before (in 40 yrs, according to the article). That was to endorse a Presidential candidate. He chose Ted Cruz: http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/gop-primaries/266814-glenn-beck-endorses-cruz-tears-into-trump

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I had no idea he had never endorsed anyone. Wow. But I don’t think even that will penetrate the Trumpkin acolytes. As MYIQ at the Crawdad Hole said, “they are in love”. When someone is in love there is no fact that will penetrate the fog of it.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yeah, I didn’t either. I don’t follow Beck closely enough to know that either, but he does come out with some good stuff.

Sadly, I think MYIQ is write abt these people being in love with Trump. That is why he could shoot someone in Times Square and have them leap to his defense. Just astonishing…

  18. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

This article is too true. Had it not been for Carly Fiorina’s speech, none of which Fox aired, but did mention along with a shot of the thousands of people there, one would not know this happened. It was apparently bigger than ever, even with the storm coming: http://thefederalist.com/2016/01/23/media-continues-to-sideline-march-for-life-coverage/?

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I’m surprised they didn’t interview her to ask what she thought about the latest Trump tweet. Fox, like all other media, spends at least 50% of its time covering Trump.

I did like FOX’s answer to Trump when he objected to Megyn Kelly being a part of the next debate.

Megyn Kelly to Moderate Next Debate Despite Trump’s Objection

Fox to Trump: Megyn Kelly will be a debate moderator

Fox News has a message for Donald Trump: Megyn Kelly will be a moderator for next week’s Republican debate, despite the businessman’s call for her removal.

Hours after Trump accused the Fox anchor of bias and said she should not be part of the debate, Fox issued a statement: “Megyn Kelly has no conflict of interest. Donald Trump is just trying to build up the audience for Thursday’s debate, for which we thank him.”

Kelly herself has consistently declined to respond to repeated attacks from Trump, who has described her as a “bimbo” among other insults.

      http://legalinsurrection.com/2016/01/megyn-kelly-to-moderate-next-debate-despite-trumps-objection/

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Ugh, no kidding, huh? I love their response though abt thanking Trump for ginning up interest.

Honest to God, Marge, I could not BELIEVE the way women who previously seemed insulted by sexist behavior brushed off the VERY sexist comments by Trump abt Kelly, AND their defense of Trump for Kelly asking him a REAL question. Just astonishing.

I, for one, am glad she is moderating. She is so even keeled, even when she was sick as a dog (as she was at the last one she moderated) that it should be a good one.

And the cartoon is so spot on…

I trust your kid is good in DC, and yeah – no shortage of coverage from there, so that is pretty neat (my oldest friend/former sister-in-law is in the DC area, too – definitely a lot of snow there!).
