At long, long last, we have come to the beginning of the process to pick nominees for both the Democrats and the Republicans via the curious caucus practice in Iowa. The polls no longer matter as the people themselves get together and decide who they want as their respective nominee.
But here’s the thing. The winners of the past two election cycles did not go on to win the Republican nomination, not even CLOSE. While I know this is important insofar as getting this Primary Party started, at least in my mind this is not the be-all-end-all of the Primaries. There are a whole lot more states, and more influential states in terms of delegates to go.
That said, it will be nice to get one under our belt before we head to New Hampshire and then my state of South Carolina for the Republicans, Nevada for the Democrats. And this one may be more important for the Democrats than the Republicans ultimately, especially for Hillary Clinton. I am sure many of us remember how shocking it was that the upstart Obama won back in 2008, with John Edwards coming in second (remember him??). Now, Clinton is running neck and neck with an elder Socialist who yells at people practically non-stop, but who has somehow convinced his young supporters that despite DECADES of being paid by taxpayers and being in politics, he is an outsider. They also seem all too fine with him being a Socialist, which is ASTONISHING to me. And now, these young people who first supported the “cool” biracial dude are supporting their surrogate grandpa/cranky old neighbor. WTH??? (The Federalist has this excellent piece, “How Tocqueville Schooled Bernie Sanders,” an article definitely worth reading.)
Of course, Clinton isn’t much better, especially as she moves so far to the Left, she’s about to lap herself. Then there are the MANY issues around her emails, Benghazi, and her failed tenure at State (though Kerry’s is scarcely better, and it may be worse). The emails and subsequent investigation are clearly a major problem though, as Branco demonstrates so well as only he can in Legal Insurrection:
Yep – that about sums it up!
As for the outcome of the Iowa caucus, we will just have to wait and see who comes out on top. Right now, it is all speculation, though I am sure we each have people we WANT to win. I reckon we’ll have our respective chances soon enough.
Until then, wait we will, but I have some other news from Iowa that might get lost in the shuffle. It is disturbing on a number of levels, but especially as it involves the VA. From the Daily Caller:
Multiple agencies are colluding to hide investigative documents from the public simply to avoid embarrassing high-level officials engaged in serious misconduct, a Senate investigation determined, according to documents obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
The probe by Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley was prompted by the Department of Veterans Affairs’ inspector general’s years-long quest to prevent the public from learning about its deputy inspector general’s incessant public masturbation by improperly stymieing a Freedom of Information Act request filed by TheDCNF. (RELATED: Top VA Watchdog Resigned After Being Caught Masturbating On The Job)
Grassley also scolded VA’s Acting IG Linda Halliday. She and her former boss Richard Griffin have repeatedly been accused of covering up — instead of ferreting out — misconduct not just in their own ranks, but in the 300,000-employee agency they are charged with policing.
After the massive and deadly wait-time scandal — which the masturbator, Jon Wooditch, missed in a “comprehensive” national audit of wait times — it was revealed that the IG often hid the findings of its investigations, sometimes even from Congress.
USA Today found that 140 health care reports had been kept secret since 2006, including one that found serious problems with opiates at a Wisconsin facility. The family of a vet who died of that very problem said if the report hadn’t been kept secret, he might still be alive. […] (Click here to read the rest.)
WOW. There is much more to this disturbing article, and the cover ups to protect people in the VA who most definitely SHOULD have lost their jobs, not been able to retire with a full pension like Woodlitch did.
And there is one other piece of news to share today, this one about Obama’s lies tot he people on important issues. In this case, he lied through his teeth about the Debt-Limit crisis as the Daily Caller reported:
[…] The staff report, to be released Tuesday, charges that Lew and other Obama administration officials deliberately misled Congress and the public during the federal budget and debt limit showdowns in both years. The committee will convene a public hearing on the report Feb. 2.
The report also states that the Obama administration crafted actual contingency plans to pay for Social Security and veterans benefits, as well as principal and interest on the national debt if the government was temporarily unable to borrow more money. The Committee concludes that over the last two years the Treasury Department has “obstructed” congressional efforts to get to the bottom of the administration’s real-time policy during the two showdowns.
The Constitution stipulates that only Congress can determine how much money the federal government can borrow. Presidents thus cannot unilaterally spend beyond congressional debt ceiling limits set. The committee — chaired by Republican Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas — charged that during both confrontations, the Obama administration held the country’s creditworthiness “hostage” by claiming default was the only possibility if the debit ceiling was not raised. […] (Click here to read the rest.)
In other words, Obama and his minions violated the Constitution AND blackmailed the country. What a guy. I can see why Clinton is so busy trying to run on his coat-tails now. She should maybe ask all those Democrats who lost their jobs in the past two elections doing the same worked out for them…
That’s it for me. Feel free to discuss what is going on today in Iowa or elsewhere, what your predictions are, or what else is on your minds. This is an Open Thread.
