Conservative Caricature, Machiavellian, And Ice, Ice Baby *Open Thread*

I have largely given up watching Fox News, but I have started dvr’ing The Kelly File as of this week. I am glad I have.

Why? Because of people like Marc Thiessen, who appeared Thursday night discussing the recent statements by Donald Trump regarding Nuclear Proliferation, and Abortion, in particular. Thiessen summed up PERFECTLY what Trump is doing, and he does so with passion and eloquence:

Exactly. That is EXACTLY what Trump is doing. He is a liberal pretending to be a conservative, and is acting like a CARICATURE of what a Conservative actually is, especially on issues like Abortion and women.

Charles Krauthammer also weighed on on this most recent Trump controversy, among others, on The Kelly File. His comments were spot on, and funny (the Coulter comment in particular):

Holy moley, did you see those “Unfavorable” ratings?? That is PRECISELY what many of us have been trying to explain to Trump supporters. People dislike him, and many of us dislike him INTENSELY.

Especially for the (LIBERAL) tactics he and his supporters employ, tactics many of us see as being IDENTICAL to those of Obama supporters in 2007-8 to 2012. The Patriot Retort has a great piece on this very issue (h/t piper):

[…]  This is how Leftists behave. They use threats and intimidation. They revel in destroying lives. And they do not respect the rights of others — the right to be safe in your own home, the right to bear arms, the right to freely assemble.

The Left has always embraced the Machiavellian belief that the ends justify the means. They want to silence opposing voices, so they can do anything they want to do it. They want to ban guns, so they will do anything they want, including putting the lives and safety of legal gun owners at risk by publishing their home addresses. They want to stop Trump from speaking, so they will invade a stadium and disrupt things, spit on people, shout people down and create such a dangerous environment with no regard for whom might get hurt.

For the Left, the ends justify the means because Leftists are horrible human beings.

Last night, it was reported that former Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields had to leave her home after BuzzFeed and Fox News “accidentally” published her home address and phone number. Immediately after it happened, she was hit with a barrage of threats and intimidation.

When news broke that she was forced out of her own home, Trump supporters cheered. They stopped Fields! They stopped Fields!

I put on hip-waders and trudged through the cesspool of different “conservative” website comments sections and was stunned to discover how downright delighted these Trump supporters were at terrorizing Fields to the point of driving out of her own home.

I don’t know what it is specifically about Donald Trump that has made him so successful at blurring the lines between supposed conservatives and these hateful Leftists. But he has done it.

The level of vitriol, rage, spite, and general ass-holery coming from these people who claim to want to “Make America Great Again” is really chilling. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

I don’t know what it is either, but there is no doubt the tactics and the justifications are from the same playbook. Then again, considering Trump is really a Liberal, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that he and his followers are using the same tactics. I am just dumfounded that the followers who decried this with Obots are so willing to embrace it for someone like Trump. Go figure.

No wonder Cruz is rising in places like Wisconsin. He is standing up to Trump for his behavior, especially against women and on abortion. No doubt about it, his star seems to be rising. About damn time, too, if you ask me. From The Hill:

[…] He’s seen a GOP establishment that despised him warm to his presidential campaign, and showed off his policy chops and a sense of humor during a Wednesday night appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

At a CNN town-hall earlier in the week, Cruz had a well-received moment when he opened up about losing his sister to heroin addiction.

Sweeter still is that Cruz’s shining moments have come amidst a rocky stretch for GOP frontrunnerDonald Trump, who this week saw his campaign manager charged with simple battery and then stumbled badly in an MSNBC interview over abortion.

Both incidents raised new doubts about whether Trump can win over female voters in the fall, giving ammunition to those who argue the GOP should nominate someone else to the White House at their convention — even if Trump is the delegate leader.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll released Thursday found Trump would be the most unpopular major-party nominee in the modern era, while surveys testing a hypothetical match-up between Trump and Hillary Clinton show the Democratic front-runner thumping him in poll after poll. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Again, if you watched the video with Kelly and Krauthammer, you saw those numbers, but just in case, here they are. From WaPo:

If Donald Trump secures the Republican presidential nomination, he would start the general election campaign as the least-popular candidate to represent either party in modern times.

Three-quarters of women view him unfavorably. So do nearly two-thirds of independents, 80 percent of young adults, 85 percent of Hispanics and nearly half of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents.

Those findings, tallied from Washington Post-ABC News polling, fuel Trump’s overall 67 percent unfavorable rating — making Trump more disliked than any major-party nominee in the 32 years the survey has been tracking candidates. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

That is EXACTLY what many of us have been trying to tell the Trumpanzees. People HATE TRUMP more than they love him. He will LOSE to Hillary Clinton (and I am still not convinced that wasn’t the plan with him all along since he is NOT a Conservative but a Liberal, as he proved again over the past week on not just abortion, but healthcare and education).

I just hope all of this is in time for Cruz’s star to rise to the top, and stay there. If he is not the nominee, we can start practicing saying, “Madam President.” Shudder…

And speaking of “shuddering,” I have to leave you with something, um, cool, to soothe the soul after all of the political talk. That would be the GLACIERS we went past while sailing down the fjords to Ushuaia. Only one came down to the water, but it was quite something. Check them out:

And I had to put this one in. The rainbow actually spanned across the front of the ship. But as you can see, there is sun, rain, rain coming, the rainbow, AND we had a little hail, all within a couple of minutes – literally.

I also wanted to leave you with a little hope for the future. There is something about the incredible beauty of this planet that acts as a balm to the spirit, especially in difficult times. Heaven knows, we have had plenty of those, but even still – seeing a rainbow acts as a reminder that there is still beauty in the world. Amen to that…

That’s it for me. Feel free to discuss whatever is on your minds today. This is an Open Thread.

Beautiful images Amy. Thank you so much for sharing.

I am off to vote, get groceries and empty my bank account picking up some prescriptions. I will comment more later.

Dr. wrote my Son a script for his sugar and it was 300.00
      So he said ‘no thanks’
My one eye drops are 450.00 😯

my breathing medicine Spriva went from me paying $15 to $347. then last week I went to get my Advair and that went from my paying $15 to almost $200. I can not change insurance companies until October. They said that I should pay and then they will reinburse me. I already have to do that with their premiums now. Before obamacare, I paid medicare and Amtrack paid my 2nd insurance. I was part of my retirement pkg.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Good GRIEF, Helen! That is ASTONISHING! Both yours and Foxy’s stories are just mind boggling. How in the WORLD do they expect people to be able to pay those kinds of prices on TOP of insurance premiums?!

This just makes me insane, and I so hate it for y’all!

          • mcnorman Says:

They don’t care. At some point all of us who paid into the system will be long gone, then what? Just a note on the pharmacies that sell across the border. Before the drug cartel wars, people used to go to Mexico and buy all their meds at the reduced (we subsidize) prices. Now, it’s a take your chances drive to Mexico. The thing is that the prices by big pharma are reduced to the third world countries that we subsidize. To add insult to injury, MANY of the pharmacy owners across the river live in the USA and they own multiple homes in multiple states while we pay.

        • mcnorman Says:

helenk, this is ogarbagecare subsidizing. Be happy that they didn’t give you an end of life paperwork binder like they did my friend. I am mortified by what I am witnessing. Yesterday, I argued with an insurer who authorized a surgery. As you know, things can become different during surgery so I had them change the units to 2 from 1 because we ended up doing more than what we thought. Guess what? They said sure we will change the units, but you won’t get paid anything for doing the work on the other side. This is why doctors don’t want to practice medicine anymore. This is why so many of the really good ones are transitioning to hospitalists or retiring. This is why many join these “well” groups. We are only witnessing the tip of the iceberg right now.

          • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

mcnorman, that is just ASTONISHING! I never cease to be amazed at the results of how Obamacare is being carried out. Many, MANY, of us here told people that these kinds of things were going to happen, but no one believed us at best, and demonized us at worst. But when our worst suspicions are borne out, it is just demoralizing as hell. THAT is why we need someone in the WH who will actually repeal this horrific law…

        • foxyladi14 Says:

          OMSL Helen. ❤

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

My pleasure, Marge! It was overcast often, but still, the majesty of the mountains, fjords, and glaciers was not to be overshadowed! 🙂

Oh, dear – so sorry to hear abt the cost of the prescriptions, Foxy. That is but one of the aggravations of Jimmy Kimmel’s ulta-liberal response to not having heard anything bad abt Obamacare. Seriously??? If he lived like MOST Americans did, he would know just how bad it has gotten for MOST people. Grrr.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I LOVE the Blue Angels!!! Thank you so much for this, Helen!

Remember when Obama stopped them in his petulant way to make congresspeople pay for doing what he TOLD them to do (Sequestration)? Uh, yeah. Glad the Angels are flying again! 🙂

    • foxyladi14 Says:

      Awesome thanks Helen. 😀

one of the biggest untalked about threats to our country

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

ABSOLUTELY!! This is spot on, Helen. This lack of knowledge, of critical thinking, is exactly why people like Obama and Trump can rise so, not to mention Sanders and his Socialism. If people knew any HISTORY, for instance, or expected candidates to be able to answer important questions on policy, there is no doubt, we would be in a different place today.

Thank you so much for this…

  7. kenoshamarge Says:

That Mark Thiessen/Megan Kelly interview was terrific. Since I no longer watch FOX I didn’t see it. Thanks for sharing.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I totally hear you, Marge. I hadn’t watched much of Kelly because by that time of day, I am taking a break from politics and have already seen enough news. Well, since I have cut out a bunch of other news shows, I thought why not tape her and watch the next morning? She is one of the few good ones left there.

And yes, that interview was powerful. You can tell just how much Thiessen cares about, and is affected by, the damage Trump is doing to the GOP. And he is eloquent to verbalize it.

Someone else at Fox who is speaking out is Greg Gutfeld. His comments the other day on The Five were telling indeed (as were Bolling’s for acting like the Trump people aren’t angry, though Perino and Bila made good points, too. Heck, even Williams was okay). Gutfeld has guts, no doubt abt it:

      • kenoshamarge Says:

What he should have said was that Bolling is one of the biggest problems there. Then Bolling has the nerve to point at Dana Perino. You can tell Dana is not a happy camper.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, yeah – Dana’s couple word response said a WHOLE lot more, didn’t it? And yeah, Bolling has totally gone over to the Trumpanzee side and has that whole finger-pointing, take no responsibility for actions thing going on. Honestly, I had to fast forward through some of his drivel. I only backed it up when I saw that Dana and Jedediah had said something…

      • helenk3 Says:

I keep thinking that is a repeat of 2008 but on the republican side instead of the democratic side. The democratic party is no longer what it used to be. Look at their candidates, is that the best they can do now?
My question is if the republican party destroys itself this year, what is left? What is the future of American politics?

Also keep thinking that the donald is a trojan horse sent in to fracture the republican party.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I absolutely think you are right abt Trump being a Trojan horse, Helen. Absolutely. His caricatures of positions, as Thiessen pointed out, make it clear that he is pushing what liberals THINK abt Republicans, not who Republicans are. He has done IMMEASURABLE damage to the GOP brand. And yes, that was the point…

        • kenoshamarge Says:

          You nailed it Helen!

  8. kenoshamarge Says:

I went to the Municipal Building here in Kenosha a short time ago and voted for TED CRUZ! The place was packed and I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. According to FOX’s own poll Cruz is up by 10. I’ve done my part. Now it’s up to the rest of the Wisconsin voters with a brain.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Go, Marge, go! Good for you! I, too, hope the good folks of WI cast their votes for Cruz. I hope he takes it in an absolute LANDSLIDE!!

  9. kenoshamarge Says:

Trump’s Unfavorability Ratings Are Out of Control

A new poll shows that an impressive number of Americans from a wide variety of demographics have an unfavorable opinion of Republican frontrunner Donald Trump. Over 50 percent of every group surveyed had a less-than-favorable opinion of Trump, including white males and those without a college

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Exactly right. The Washington/ABC poll I mentioned in the post highlights just how much people dislike Trump, with women leading the pack as the excellent cartoon you put up below highlights.

I mean, really – when 74% of women – over half the country – dislikes someone, that is bad. In general, though, the 67% of people in general who dislike Trump really flies in the face of the “inevitability” so many of his supporters have flung in our faces.

Along with that is this projection based on current numbers put together by the Center for Politics at UVA. Bottom line, Hillary wins the electoral college votes by a LOT (like we keep saying):

    • kenoshamarge Says:

They need to explain, slowly and very clearly and in words of one syllable the difference between a “majority” and a “plurality”. Because the Trumpanzees don’t seem to understand that.

      • piper Says:

That would be nice but they like the obots in 2008 refuse to see / understand anything other than rhetoric sound bites spoken by their holy messiah, drumpf. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Sad but true. I just cannot wrap my head around the people supporting Trump who so hated Obama for all the same reasons they love Trump…

  19. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I just saw that Megyn Kelly is going to have a Townhall with Ted Cruz Monday night before the Wisconsin Primary. Set your dvrs!!

    • piper Says:

Glad to hear that after finding out that Greta VS was holding one for drumpf. Interesting bec. I thought she was a Hillary fan. She was one in 2008.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I was glad to hear it, too. Kelly is one of the very few at Fox I think will do a good job with Cruz.

And yeah – it is astonishing abt Greta, isn’t it? She really seems to have done a major 180 if she truly supports Trump…

  20. piper Says:

After removing 2 fav. blogs which freed some online time, I looked for other blogs to fill up my allotted time. Here’s another good thread which I shamelessly stole from philosophical conservatism.

” The most desired attribute for a statesman in an authoritarian society is intelligence; because he is literally expected to solve all of the problems of the people. The most desirable attribute of a statesman in a free society is character; for he is simply a representative of the will of the people entrusted to vote and to act in their stead. Americans have traditionally been more interested in the story of their candidates than in their rhetoric. Who is he or she as a person? Is there a reason that they should be trusted to do as they claim? This concrete approach based on a candidates character and history is a source of security for a free society. In an authoritarian society the people lay under the emotional sway of rhetoric rather than reality. Rhetoric becomes reality. The statesman can paint any portrait of himself he likes with the instrument of rhetoric and a people desperate to embrace such a picture will do so, passionately. The scope and power of rhetoric is absolutely unlimited because it is merely language. It can excite the imagination without bounds. This is where the cult of personality comes from in an authoritarian context.

But where one’s opinion of a statesman or candidate comes from concrete facts and history such a cult is impossible. All that is possible here is an intelligent sober decision between two prospective candidates based upon their history.”

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

EXCELLENT piece, piper – and yes, when one looks at “Concrete facts and history,” it IS impossible to worship a candidate. But both Obots and Trumpanzees could not care less abt history OR facts. I just have to hope and pray that enough people take a stand against the Cult Of Trump that our nation is not saddled with him. Or Clinton.

  21. piper Says:

Crazy weather here – yesterday rain and more rain which gave me the opportunity to use my new pump to drain the standing fetid water out of the yard (getting better at set-up but prefer the sun to come out and do the job for me) and today it’s snowing. Now where did I put that snow shovel.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Ohmygosh, are you kidding me?? Good GRIEF!! Is that normal for you to get snow in April? Holy moley. Good thing you and Marge already voted!!

  22. piper Says:

The pictures are awesome. Definitely need to look into going there.

A wonderful feeling having voted early – Go Cruz Go

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks so much, piper! I am glad you are enjoying them.

And yes, if you can, it is a trip well worth taking!

  23. piper Says:

Good to see you again. Last week I started having internet problems while watching movies on Amazon Prime – after 3 nights of difficulty called AT&T and they sent me a new modem which I will install tomorrow. Hopefully it will be easy as I’m no computer geek or even close.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I was having trouble with our ATT internet this apst week, too. This has been a continual problem since we switched to Uverse. We are down near the end of the cable line, they claim, which is the big reason. Regardless, since Suzy’s work is dependent on the internet, it is more than a tad frustrating. To me, too, of course.

Good luck with the new modem!

  24. piper Says:

Yesterday, I watched Charlie Rose having a good discussion with Chris Matthews, Ellyanne Clayton and Matt Dowd – no screaming, no demeaning words just an honest discussion about this primary season and the 2 parties. I will for look link later.
Normally don’t watch him but wanted to catch his interview with Helen Mirren.

  25. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

A friend at Facebook had this post, another indication of just how liberal Trump really is, despite his attempts to clothe himself as a Conservative:
