Some Bad News, More Bad News, And Some GOOD News *Open Thread*

by

Oh, where to begin? I have had to narrow down the “bad” and “more bad” news because, unfortunately, there is just way too  much of both. Thankfully, though, there is some good news, too, which I will get to soon enough.

First to the “bad” news. I am sure this will not surprise many of you, but Prof. Larry Sabato of the Center for Politics at UVA, made this dire prediction. From the Weekly Standard (h/t Facebook friend):

The rise of Donald Trump and the general “polarization” of politics have pushed six Senate seats toward the Democrats, according to Larry Sabato and his “Crystal Ball” forecast.

Sabato’s updated forecast bodes particularly ill for Sens. Rob Portman and Pat Toomey, Republicans who are defending their turf in major purple states. Because there is a strong correlation between the success of a presidential candidate and Senate hopefuls of the same party, Sabato argues that the GOP could endanger itself if it nominates a general election candidate unpalatable to the general public.

“Considering the rise of Donald Trump, the polarization in U.S. politics, and a higher rate of straight-ticket voting, this could be bad news for the GOP,” Sabato writes.

“Assuming the GOP nominee for the White House is either Trump or Ted Cruz, we think the Democrats will fare reasonably well down-ballot (more so with Trump than Cruz, though Cruz will also have a difficult time carrying many swing states).” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Oh, AWESOME. That’s just jake. Another reason to dislike Trump and the minions who mindlessly support him. And on that note, they claim to support him because he is “anti-Establishment,” despite the many and numerous connections he has TO the Establishment. Nowhere is that more glaringly obvious than the recent vile comments from Reps. Boehner and King, as PJ Media highlights (h/t Helen).

And as Carly Fiorina noted, there is a reason Boehner is no longer the Speaker (h/t Facebook friend for link) OR in the House. Yeah, no kidding. Guess he’s never heard the “people in glass houses” adage before.

mrz042716dapr20160427114533But hey, the Republicans weren’t using those majorities ANYWAY, so, yeah. As Clinton famously said, “What difference at this point does it make?” Ahem. Of course, it WOULD make a difference if a Republican actually becomes President, which means Ted Cruz since he is the ONLY Republican running right now. Just sayin’. (Cartoon by Michael Ramirez at Townhall.com.)

Bottom line, though, it ain’t gonna be pretty if Trump goes against Clinton and seems like it may give the Democrats all three houses AGAIN. Because that worked out SO well the last time. Can you say, “OBAMACARE“???  Uh, yeah.

And that brings up “more bad news.” This is what happens when there are no checks and balances on the Executive Branch by the Congress. That would be this newsflash about what ICE officials, paid for with YOUR tax dollars to fulfill the LAW on Immigration are doing. Hint: Not their jobs. From the Daily Signal:

More than 19,000 criminal illegal immigrants were released from custody in 2015, according to new figures disclosed by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.

The 19,723 criminal releases—as the government refers to them—represent a 35 percent decrease from fiscal year 2014.

The phrase “criminal releases” can apply to a wide range of crimes, including traffic violations—such as driving without a license—to more serious offenses like sexual assault, rape, and murder. Their crimes include misdemeanors and felonies.

According to the Center for Immigration Studies, which advocates for less immigration, the 19,723 criminal releases had a total of 64,197 convictions among them. More than 200 of those were homicide convictions. Most are traffic offenders. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

I don’t give a damn if they are JAYWALKING tickets. The “ILLEGAL” part should be sufficient to deport them, much less the additional criminal activity on their parts. Thanks, Obama and Congress for NOT keeping us safe and protecting our borders! If Clinton becomes the President, the borders are going to become even more like a sieve than they already are. Ugh.

But you know I am not gonna leave you on such a down note. I have some GOOD NEWS to report! I wrote about this story some seven months ago, the Green Beret who was on the verge of being separated from service for taking it to an Afghan commander who was raping boys. That would be Sgt. 1st Class Charles Martland, an HIGHLY decorated Green Beret I was delighted to see this article at Military.com:

Sgt. 1st Class Charles Martland confirmed the Army’s decision to retain him when reached by Fox News, which has been covering the story in depth for the past eight months and first broke the story of the Army’s decision in August to kick out Martland over the incident, which occurred in northern Afghanistan in 2011.

“I am real thankful for being able to continue to serve,” said Martland when reached on the telephone by Fox News. “I appreciate everything Congressman Duncan Hunter and his chief of staff, Joe Kasper, did for me.”

As first reported by Fox News, while deployed to Kunduz Province, Afghanistan, Martland and his team leader confronted a local police commander in 2011 accused of raping an Afghan boy and beating his mother. When the man laughed off the incident, they shoved him to the ground.

Martland and his team leader were later removed from the base, and eventually sent home from Afghanistan. The U.S. Army has not confirmed the specifics of Martland’s separation from service, citing privacy reasons, but a “memorandum of reprimand” from October 2011 obtained by Fox News makes clear that Martland was criticized by the brass for his intervention after the alleged rape. Asked for comment in September 2015, an Army spokesman reiterated, “the U.S. Army is unable to confirm the specifics of his separation due to the Privacy Act.”

An Army spokesman said Thursday that Martland’s status has been changed, allowing him to stay in the Army, in a statement to Fox News. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

Wahoo!!! Now that is some good news indeed, is it not? For whatever reason the Army decided to do the right thing, I am glad they did. That gives me a bit of hope, and gives our Army back a man who is not just highly decorated, but highly respected. That is no small thing.

That’s it for me. What’s on your minds today? This is an Open Thread.

Ha! Love that cartoon. We are toast, I cannot see a positive outcome for this election anywhere. On the bright side, at least not all of us are fainting at rallies and idolizing our candidates. I guess that’s progress.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Glad you liked it! And yes, I guess that some of us aren’t fawning all over some politician is SOME progress! 🙂

      Good to *see* you, insanity!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

DANGIT – it started to play, then said “Video Unavailable. Sorry, this video could not be played.” That it was abt Trump being a big fat cheater couldn’t have anything to do with that, could it? 🙂

    • GinaR Says:

It played for me! And yep, Donald Trump is a big fat cheater. He can’t even play GOLF without cheating! And that’s the LEAST of what he is…egomaniac…narcissist…bully…ignorant…childish…petty.. petulant…vindictive…vengeful…immoral…unethical…cretin…boorish… rude…loudmouthed…those are just a few of the adjectives that come to mind in describing DT.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Well, gee, Gina – when you put it like THAT…AHAHAHAHA…

        • GinaR Says:

I’m trying REAAAAAAALY hard not to let my true feelings show. Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I was told not too long ago that I suffered from TDS or Trump Derangement Syndrome. I told her that I didn’t “suffer” from it, I “reveled” in it! She on the other hand suffers from a cognitive dissonance that allows her to support someone that is against almost everything she always claimed she believed.

The quote from Thomas Paine about “summer soldier” and “sunshine patriot” seems eerily appropriate in this time and place. They haven’t the brains, patience or guts to change the country by the rules and within the constitution. They’d rather tear it down without any idea of what should replace it. They disgust me beyond my ability to articulate.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

ROTFLMAO abt the “reveling” in TDS! I’d say you articulated it very well indeed, Marge! 😀

Establishment: Team Trump’s Strange New Respect for Boehner, McConnell

    By Guy Benson

Over the last 24 hours, Donald Trump and his allies have giddily quoted and cheered on two unlikely figures: Former House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Trump cited McConnell on the stump, attacking Cruz for antagonizing many of his colleagues in the US Senate. And Trumpworld is reveling in on-the-record comments from Boehner, who called Cruz “Lucifer in the flesh,” and a “miserable” SOB.

The Trump train is ostensibly fueled by anger at Washington’s various betrayals, and a rigged system that benefits insiders and elites at the expense of average Americans. But the billionaire’s bandwagon is more than happy to embrace card-carrying, central-casting members of The Establishment, so long as they’re saying or doing things that are deemed helpful to the ‘Trumpstablishment.’

Trump supporters angrily rail against Beltway fat cats who “go along to get along” in political fights, then prance from one lavish cocktail party to the next, toasting their own superiority. Then they’ll turn around and applaud bona fide establishment fixtures — from Rudy Giuliani, to New Gingrich, to Boehner and McConnell — while applying that now-meaningless term to conservatives who oppose Trump on policy and ideological grounds.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It is rather mind boggling isn’t it? I guess none of us should be surprised that Trump’s minions are as illogical, hypocritical, and duplicitous as the man they follow…

  5. kenoshamarge Says:

Governor Mike Pence of Indiana is about to endorse Ted Cruz. Will that make any difference to the Trumpanzees? Doubtful. They don’t seem to care that Tyson, the convicted rapist endorses Trump. They don’t care that Bobby Knight of the chair throwing fame endorses Trump. But come November I think women will care – a lot.

Carly Fiorina proved her value to the Cruz campaign by calling Trump out in his glee over the Tyson endorsement:

BOOM! Carly calls out Trump for cheering for an endorsement from a CONVICTED RAPIST!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

ABT DAMN TIME Pence gave Cruz his endorsement. WTH took so long?!

And Fiorina is SPOT ON – who wants an endorsement from a convicted rapist AND a batterer??? Then again, if Trumpanzees are happy with a Bobby Knight endorsement, another abusive, violent man, that says a lot abt them…

      Thanks for the Fiorina link!

  6. GinaR Says:

I don’t think Cruz would have as difficult a time carrying swing states as many pundits want us to believe. If he has the support of the GOP, and he can bring out that family man, humorous side of himself, he’ll win people over. Put his knowledge of the Constitution up against Clinton’s any day and he’ll mow her over.

But thanks to the blind, angry Trumpbots, the tens of thousands of Dems who have voted for him in open primaries in order to make him the nominee so in the general election they can vote for Clinton against him, and the terrified GOP congressional lifers who think their life of privilege might come to an end with a Cruz presidency (they might actually have to WORK for a living), it’ll take a miracle for Trump not to get to 1237 delegates. And if he doesn’t, it’ll take another miracle for the GOP to rally behind Cruz at the convention and get him nominated on a 2nd, 3rd, or whatever vote.

If Clinton wins the White House because of the ignorance and blindness of Trump’s followers, as well as the strategy of the democrats in getting their people to vote for him in the open primaries, we’ll see the end of this country as the founders envisioned it. It’s not just Obamacare, although that’s big. It’s the next step in Obamacare…single payer socialized medicine (unless you’re Clinton and can afford to pay out of pocket for excellent medical care); Common Core and the brainwashing of our children; the loss of the 2nd Amendment; amnesty for illegals; open borders, which allows in not only indigents who will immediately be placed on the government dole but Radical Islamic Extremists who will do everything possible to bring Sharia law to this country; kowtowing to Muslims; discrimination against Christians; disaster for Israel; a debt that will turn the US into a third world country….I weep for my great nephew and great nieces who may have to grow up in such dark times. They’ll never know the amazing country that I was lucky to grow up in.

I will never forgive anyone who supported Trump. Ever.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Right there with ya Gina. I will remember who they are and I don’t want them in my life. Ever!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Hells yeah, Gina! You tell it!! Absolutely spot on.

And yes, if either Trump or Clinton gets in the Oval Office, I, too, will weep for this nation and for our grands who will inherit a very different country from the one in which we had the privilege to grow up…

  7. kenoshamarge Says:

Pence’s endorsement was kind of wishy-washy if you ask me.

WATCH: Mike Pence endorses Ted Cruz

    • GinaR Says:

Agreed. “I’m voting for Cruz but hey, Trump’s a great guy and we owe him a lot!” Pretty pathetic.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I’ll say, what a mamby pamby endorsement! And wassup with the effusive praise of Trump?! Ugh. Way to go, Pence. Way to really show off the ol’ backbone.

      Blech.

Good. They should pay a price for being willing to put their customers at risk. Not from transgender people but from those pretending to be transgender. And nearly 1 million people that last I checked, had signed the petition to boycott Target. I was one of them.

I don’t want a man in a public bathroom with me or my granddaughters or my great granddaughters or anyone else’s little girls.

And I don’t care how he “feels”, if a man still has male plumbing, he’s a man. Bruce Jenner be damned!

      • GinaR Says:

Amen, Marge! If someone is “confused” about what sex they are, stand in front of a mirror in the privacy of their own home, drop their drawers, and take a look. And if what you feeeeeel doesn’t match with what you see, go see a therapist. But if you’re a man, and you’ve got male plumbing, stay the hell out of the women’s bathroom, locker room, and showers.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I agree. It is ridiculous how quickly these companies are jumping on this bandwagon not giving ANY thought to the safety of women and girls. So sick of this crap.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I think that’s a wonderful response. Wish I would have thought of it when I got one.

I’m sure I’ll get my chance though because it doesn’t appear they update their list very often. Very like those insurance companies that haunt you daily once you get on Social Security.

Oh and the funeral Homes that send out brochures. Really makes your day.

I still get things from the DNC and Hillary’s campaign. They don’t care HOW many times you tell them to take you the hell off.

That said, great response, Helen! And yeah, maybe a “How’s that Obamacare thing working out? Not so great now that we know what’s in it!” 🙂

I suspect Boehner was drunk. Again. Ditto Pete King. They showed that they are much more like Donald Trump than the voters would like to admit. Even in NY, who votes for a scumbag like Pete King? Have they no standards at all? Wait, they’ve voted for Schumer for many years. Never mind.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I am heartened to see that they are speaking out abt Boehner’s reprehensible comments. They were WAY beyond the pale and completely uncalled for no matter the rationale for spewing them.

      And yeah, what Marge said!

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Even Trumps biggest supporter, Sean Hannity, thought it was stupid and told Boehner to just shut up. Perhaps even the besotted Trumpanzee Hannity thought that just maybe some of those thinking about voting Trump might change their mind once idiot Boehner told the world that Trump was his golfing and texting buddy. What a maroon! Sayeth the Bugs

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yeah, isn’t that something? Even Sean getting all upset at Boehner?

Btw, I saw an article today at The Hill that Rubio is seeing improvements in Trump. REALLY?? Like WHAT?? His recent telepromptered speech was a DISASTER, as Trump likes to say; he is still calling people names; is still saying next to nothing in his rallies; is still a misogynistic bully; and on I can go. Just WHAT are the positive changes Trump has made?? Sheesh.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

You said it, Marge. That is exactly right. Cruz is truly what Obama was depicted as being, though the media is oddly silent abt his vast legal accomplishments and intellect. Gee – wonder why?! Ahem.
