What Is A Conservative? * Open Thread *

Having spent a large portion of my life as a Democrat it still surprises me, from time to time, to find myself a Conservative. I am not a what some Conservatives think of as a good Conservative because on some, not all, social issues I am more Libertarian than Conservative. I don’t care what they think. I am what I am and I am comfortable with it.

One so-called social issue that I am mostly Conservative about is abortion. For many years I considered myself pro-life even though I would have never considered an abortion myself. But I still don’t think of the morning after pill as an abortion although a good many Conservatives do. My church does too. But my conscience is my own and I have to live with it.

The pro-abortion liberals and the anti-abortion people scream at each other and both are not open to any compromise. Neither listens to the other or cares what the other thinks or says. One of the many issues that divide us.

Let’s face it Roe V Wade is never going to be overturned no matter who the Conservatives put in the White House. If they ever do. Because the Republican Party would be horrified to find a real Conservative as the head of their party. Real Conservatives aren’t big on compromise.

Remember back when Hillary Clinton was talking about abortions being legal, safe and rare? Hear much of that today? 57,762,169 Abortions in America Since Roe vs. Wade in 1973  Rare?

Conservatives believe in fiscal responsibility. And so do I. The way the idiots we elect spend the money taken from hardworking taxpayers should be, and often is, a crime. Perhaps if it isn’t your money and you haven’t had to work for it you can simply spend taxpayer money like monopoly money.

What if there isn’t enough tax dollars? Spend more anyway. For any reasonable person that is insane. Liberals aren’t reasonable people. Nor are their voters who want more freebies and more stuff so that they can complain that the government doesn’t give them enough.

Conservatives also believe in limited government. Big government is expensive, hard, or impossible to control and subject to corruption. The Republican Party pays lip service to being against big government but it’s a sham. I love this how Glenn Beck called them out on it:

‘Hello my name is the Republican Party and I got a problem. I’m addicted to spending and big government.’ I’d like one of them just to stand up and say that. ~ Glenn Beck

Beware Republicans that claim to be Conservatives. Many that do – aren’t. I know, shocking isn’t it that a politician would lie to us to get our vote. Good plan is to watch what they do not what they say. And always, always watch who votes for a cloture vote on some spending bill. Remember if they vote for it to come to the floor and there are enough votes to pass it, they voted for it even though their record shows they voted against it. They think we’re too stupid to know that. Many are, most are simply ignorant and many just don’t care so long as that government stipend keeps coming.

As Margaret Thatcher warned, “Sooner or later you run out of other people’s money.” I would say we are at a point where many people  wonder why they should work to support those that won’t. Some have decided to climb on Uncle Sam’s gravy train. Doesn’t matter that the train is like a child’s train set that goes around and around and gets nowhere – the fare is free and you don’t have to get up in the morning to go to work – you don’t have to worry about day-care, and you don’t have to take responsibility for yourself.

Conservatives also believe in low taxes. Conservatives believe that higher taxes = less investment = a poor economy. Duh.

It wasn’t all that long ago that Democrats actually believed in tax cuts. JFK did. He was a liberal on most issues but read his own words and see if you think he would ever get elected as a Democrat today.

A tax cut means higher family income and higher business profits and a blanced federal budge… As the national income grows, the federal government will ultimately end up with more revenues. Prosperity is the real way to balance out budget. By lowering tax rates, by increasing job and income, we can expand tax revenues and finally bring out budget into balance. ~ John F. Kennedy

That was fifty years. Any Democrat that preached lower taxes or fiscal responsibility would be drummed out of the party in 2016.

Republicans in sheep’s clothing pretend to be Conservatives but their actions say no. Democrats claim to care about the poor and downtrodden but they do not.

Watch what the dishonest and venal politicians do and say. Listen to their words and watch their actions. We are served by liars and thieves. And we elected them.  Statistics say that we will return 91% of the elected liars and thieving incumbents to office come November.

Conservatives believe in God:

Belief in God is a cornerstone of our republic. Try as the liberals may to separate them, there is no Constitutional separation of church and state, only a protection of religion from the state. Our founders believed this country was divinely inspired and it was only by remembering our religious roots that we would survive.

There really are very few Conservatives in office no matter what they call themselves. That doesn’t mean you can’t vote for good decent Republicans. You just should think twice about Good Decent Republicans that lie and claim to be what they are not.

growing up I was taught to be responsible for my own actions. I had a brain and if I chose not to use it, that was on me.
People talk about the Holocaust and how horrible it was and how it should never happen again. The number of abortions in this country every year exceeds the number of Holocaust victims. That is genocide.
I was also taught that if I could not afford it, I either saved for it or did without. Debt was only for major necessary things like buying a home or medical bills if sickness happened. You paid your bills to the best of your ability.
Welfare was something you hoped you never got it a position to need. If you did it was temporary and not a lifelong thing. You were not proud of taking it and got off asap.
You went to school to better yourself and studied, behaved, and did your best to learn.

I guess that was not a bad way to growup even with the difficulties in my life. I was one of the lucky ones

    • kenoshamarge Says:

You grew up a strong individual because of the things you were taught. Perhaps the very real difficulties you endured were overcome because you didn’t whine and blame someone but stood on your own two feet and made your own life better. That takes guts and character. You were lucky to have been given a foundation but it took a strong character and integrity to build on that.

I hope you as proud of yourself as you should. As proud as all of us here on the Rev’s blog are to call you friend.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I grew up the same way – we were responsible for our own actions, actions had consequences, “poor people have poor ways,” education is key, and Welfare was meant to be a safety net, not a way of living.

      Oh, how times have changed.

Marge, like you, I was a lifelong Dem until 2008. Honestly, and while I know this has become cliche the Party really DID leave me.

And like you, I am fiscally conservative and Libertarian on some social issues. But these days, I am more on the Conservative Spectrum than what has become the Socialist Spectrum of the Dems.

EXCELLENT post. Thank you so much!

Donald Trump was characterized by Democrats as mentally unstable in a poll on Friday and Hillary was described by Republicans as criminal. So we’re left with two candidates for president, Not Yet Committed and Not Yet Indicted. Americans were in better hands under a mad English king.

Hillary Demagogues After Dallas — On Behalf of the Killer

Having just narrowly escaped indictment, our probable next president adopts a pose of righteous indignation while demagoguing on behalf of Micah Xavier Johnson in the immediate aftermath of his killing spree:

“White Americans need to do a better job of listening when African Americans talk. Talk about the seen and unseen barriers you face every day. We need to try as best we can to walk in one another’s shoes. To imagine what it would feel like if people followed us around stores or locked their car doors when we walk past. Or if every time our children went to play in the park or went for a ride or just to the store to buy ice tea and Skittles, we said a prayer, ‘Please God, please God, don’t let anything happen to my baby.’”

It is exactly this brand of bogus propaganda that triggered the assassination of five police officers in Dallas, and that will inevitably inspire more senseless bloodshed.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Are you kidding me with this??? Is this like we just have to be all cuddly with ISIS??? This man was a domestic TERRORIST who targeted white police officers, and we are supposed to side with HIM?

WTH has happened to the USA? How can people POSSIBLY even think that way? It is sheer insanity, if you ask me…

What Louis Farrakhan Had to Say Immediately Before Dallas Bloodbath

“When you are willing and not afraid anymore to pay the price for freedom — don’t let this white man tell you that violence is wrong,” Farrakhan said. “Every damn thing that he got, he got it by being violent — killing people, raping and robbing and murdering. He’s doing it as we speak, and then he has the nerve to come and tell us that violence and hatred won’t get it. Don’t buy that!”

Speaking about white people as one entity, Farrakhan proclaimed, “He is worthy to be hated.” He also claimed that “God hates,” and man is no better than God.

The shocking video was posted on Twitter at around 5 p.m. on Thursday.

How long do you think they will be able to get the long-winded, big-mouth quiet? Or even semi-quiet? If he’s “bristling” now imagine his rage if he reads something like Kurtz’s assessment – heads will roll.

  8. helenk3 Says:

    this annoyed me a lot.

first of all until the convention trump is NOT the nominee, only the presumed nominee.
second of all who the hell is huckabee to say who can speak or not

  9. helenk3 Says:

i have to respect this man. He sees both sides and wants both black and police lives to matter

  10. helenk3 Says:

I do not always agree with Paul Ryan. the republicans pushed him to be speaker and now because he is not in lockstep with trump they want him gone. That is just wrong

    • kenoshamarge Says:

The Trumpanzees are behaving as if the Republican Convention belongs to Donald Trump. It does not. And if they make it so they will find their coffers emptier and some seats at their table empty. They are acting like what they accuse the liberals of acting.

Like him or not Ryan is the Speaker of the House. As such I would think it his duty to speak at a Republican Convention.

  12. kenoshamarge Says:

Is this what we’ve really become? And to tell the truth it frightens me more than the violence.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Sadly, it seems to be. It is truly troubling, and it is enabling people to disconnect even more from each other on a regular basis.

It is also enabling them to treat each other horribly since most people never see the ones whom they are calling names.

      Sad. Just sad.

  13. helenk3 Says:

the concern that congress shows for the citizens of this country is really underwhelming.

  14. helenk3 Says:

nothing like having a government dept that we pay for, incite racial unrest

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Trust Judicial Watch to be the ones to uncover this corruption. This Obama Administration is the most corrupt in my lifetime. And that includes some big corruption hitters like the Clinton’s and Richard Nixon. He is a disgusting POS that disgraces the office he holds every day he holds. And soon their will be another disgusting POS since the choices don’t allow for anything else.

Others hold out hope for the convention but I do not. That would take guts and integrity. Two things in very short supply.

And if they try to sneak in a Mitt or a Jeb all hell will break lose. A. Mitt didn’t even run this time and B. Jeb was unwanted by most of the voters.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Despite the DOJ actually having to admit the Brown shooting was a good shooting, and that he never, ever said the whole foundation of the BLM movement, a mantra repeated in the House, on Awards Shows, and more, they did indeed continue agitating. And they are STILL continuing to agitate.

      Thanks for this!

I’ve listened in to Bongino when he filled in for Levin a time or two. He’s a little rough around the edges but he seems to be genuine. I like him. And like you say Helen, he’s right about Obama.

For those who are interested, #Never Trump has a petition to Reince Priebus to “Free The Delegates”:

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Reince Priebus is an establishment clone top to bottom. I’ve often wished that a home-town boy would make good. He’s made a mess.

Priebus had a chance to put the skids under Trump early on for some of the things Trump said. He didn’t. And now he is part of the Trump crowd. I hate to tell him but it will never wash off.

I would argue that a conservative believes in these three core beliefs, life, liberty and property. These three encompass all things and we need to seriously take a look at the republican party as a whole and get back to these three things. We could unite the whole country around these three things.
