The Trump Convention 2016 *Open Thread*

The Donald Trump Convention got off to a chaotic start yesterday. Many people that hadn’t been paying much attention got a first hand look at the sausage making of a national political party. And as everyone always warns, it wasn’t a pretty sight.

Threats, accusations, disappearing RNC Chairs – you name it the ongoing Reality Circus that is the Donald Trump Show had it all.

From Melania Trump’s plagiarized and almost undecipherable speech to the triumphant entrance of felon Don King it was show time in Cleveland.

Then there were the shenanigans: David Harsanyi has a great article about the corruption of Reince Priebus and the rest of the Trump Republican Party. The Party Of Trump Shuts Down Dissent

It’s not that we didn’t know there was corruption, it’s that we just didn’t expect it to be so in your face in Cleveland.

Evidently the arm twisting and the threats in an attempt to shut down dissent was monumental. I expect that if Donald Trump does not win in November it will be difficult, if not impossible for Priebus to keep his job. He’s making more enemies than friends and the friends he’s making are not principled or people of integrity so when things go wrong, as they unusually do he can expect to get tossed under the bus like last years news. Deservedly so.

And for the rest of the Trump thugs, this is not the way to unify the party. They are making their opposition angrier and making new enemies as they try to bully their way to success. That’s the Donald Trump way and the RNC seems quite willing to come out of the shadows and join in.

The reports of bad behavior abound. Paula Bolyard has some great video’s up at PJ Media:

RNC Devolves Into Chaos Over ‘Never Trump’ Petition

The sadness of rejection:

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. I like that a sycophant got his nose rubbed in his sycophancy. Christie has gone from being perceived as some kind of tough guy to Donald Trump’s errand boy. He deserves it but it’s almost painful to watch.

There is of course the botched perception of unity:

You have to wonder if Trump really cares if he unifies the party or not. Because nothing he does seems to suggest that. Perhaps it’s just that once you show that you will not bow down to Trump you are on his enemies list and he won’t, or can’t tolerate dissent. If you think Obama is thin-skinned and intolerant of his “enemies” just wait until there is, please God never, a President Trump.

In the meantime we have little rich daughter, she of the beauty that made her father suggest he would “date” her if she wasn’t his kid. Aside from the fact that a man of his age talking about “dating” like some adolescent being more than a little nauseating he now seems to listen only to her advice.

She lectures Republicans about not being willing to see the future. She who is so attuned to the Republican Party that she forgot to change her status from Democrat to Republican during the primary and thus couldn’t vote for her own father. Yeah tell us how it is Ivanka.

Speaking only for myself if Trump is that future, no thanks.

Muslim to Give Closing Prayer on Day Two of ‘Trump Convention’

One positive from last night was Sheriff David Clarke.

Sheriff David Clarke Rocks RNC With Pro-Cop Message: Blue Lives Matter

Sheriff Clarke’s message will be welcomed by Conservatives and the grassroots that so loathe Trump. I believe that he will do Trump some good at a time when the Trump campaign is floundering.

A message of support for law enforcement, a message of “Keeping America Safe Again” will resonate with a lot of people. People who loathe Obama and see him as a part of the problem not part of the solution.

Whether Sheriff Clarke’s voice, and him a Democrat at that, can overcome the negative images of the rest of the evening is something only time will tell.

Today is a new day and perhaps the GOP can pull itself together somewhat. As the day wears on and as the reports come out I suspect the chaos will grow quieter. Outrage and anger at this level cannot be sustained for long. And I suspect even those outraged and angry will not want to continue to be fodder for the Dems. And in that respect a unity of sorts may be achieved.

One thing is for sure, if the President Obama was called “No Drama Obama” by the media you can be sure that even they can tell the truth when they report all the “Drama” of the Trump Convention. Disgusting, corrupt but dramatic.

Can you believe what drumpf was doing while Pat Smith spoke. Always about him and his ego.

As Pat Smith, the mother of one of the Americans killed in Benghazi tearfully addressed the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump phoned into Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly and bashed John Kasich for not showing up to the confab.
In an extraordinary moment of counterprogramming, Trump shifted some of the spotlight back to himself, even as a string of speakers in Cleveland spoke optimistically about an America being led by the presumptive Republican nominee.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

No matter how hard his supporters work to tell you what Donald Trump is – he will always destroy their narrative by showing you who and what he is. A petty little me-me-me man.

Remember how angry many of us were on May 31st 2008 at the corruption in the Democrat Party? Witness the same and worse from the GOP.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Good. LORD. Are you KIDDING with that??? He really is DESPICABLE.

Marge, you are so right. The RNC is even worse because they saw what happened in 2008 and have decided to EMULATE it instead of taking a principled stand.

Trump’s wife’s speech make this bunch look like the gang that couldn’t shoot straight. did she or didn’t steal the speech. If that is the main story after the first day, it is going to be a long week

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I think they thought they could get away with the speech because it was almost impossible to understand what she was saying. Foolish them because anyone with a brain knows that every word from this fiasco will be analyzed and scrutinized for ammunition against the Trump twit. This was stupid.

    • piper Says:

Interesting how the trumpsters are praising her speech, poise and presentation while the never trumps and dems. are questioning her veracity, ability to speak passable English after 10 years here and motives for marrying Drumpf.

Also the convention which I refused to watch and given various takes on it, seemed like a long and winded cluster****. When I taught spec. ed. children how to speak to an audience, we worked on eye contact, content and keeping to the message. We practiced keeping our speeches short and succinct knowing that most people’s attention wander after 5 or 10 minutes.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

A giant cluster**** it is. And anyone praising Melania’s speech is a fool and/or a liar. Better to have her stand there and look pretty which is her job. As for her motive for marrying Trump? Duh.

Trump supporters surround Utah Delegate and threaten TO KILL HER in RNC convention bathroom

A Utah delegate was reportedly threatened inside a bathroom at Quicken Loans Arena during the Republican National Convention Monday.

According to NBC, Utah delegate Kera Birkeland was on the floor during the Rules vote as one of the delegates calling for a roll call vote.

Birkeland reportedly went to the women’s restroom and when she emerged from a stall, a group of Trump supporters surrounded her and threatened to kill her, urging her to leave the party and the state.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I was STUNNED when I saw this. That says so, so much abt who Trump and his supporters are…

      • kenoshamarge Says:

For every fool that thinks that Trump is the answer to the establishment here is the truth – he’s a part of it. He’s a progressive part of it and he always has been. He’s a thug and so are they.

He conned millions of fools who actually thought he was worth their time and their vote. He conned millions of people who actually believe he gives a rat’s backside about them.

And it was easy. That’s the saddest part of all – it was so damn easy.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

The perfidy of POTUS is always on topic as far as I’m concerned. He is disgusting and without a doubt the worst POTUS ever. At least the others loved this country. They might have loved themselves more but they loved America. Obama does not.

  9. piper Says:

I wonder if Drumpf thinks he can win even with the division in the GOP, given that Obama won despite the estrangement in the den. party after the disastrous rulz committee meeting in May, 2008 which literally gave him the nomination. After all he has a yuuuuuge mouth and eye candy family including the daughters-in-law.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I think they are counting on many of the #NeverTrump people slinking back to their tribe just as many of the Dems did in 2008. After all, no matter how bad your party is the other is worse. Or at least that’s what they tell themselves.

Both parties are corrupt and care nothing for the country or it’s people. The sooner people accept that the sooner they can help to form a party that really does care.

And as far as I’m concerned all the people that stay with this corrupt party, and I include Cruz and Lee and Gohmert are tainted beyond my ability to support them if they stay.

Those 3 men are all smarter than me and if I can see that there is no “fixing” the problems in the GOP from within, the corruption is too deep and way too wide, then they know it too. And still they stay. To me that says something about them. Something not very good.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Didn’t Trump say he didn’t care, that he would just get Dems to vote for him He doesn’t give a damn abt unity – he and his minions made that PERFECTLY clear yesterday. They are a bunch of thugs and lowlifes, as far as I can tell. So yeah, Trump thinks he can win without Republicans.

Thank you for an excellent recap of Day One of the DNC Convention (that is intentional – they are indistinguishable now). I think it is hilarious that both Palin and Christie got the shaft. Serves them right for selling their souls to the Devil.

As for the manner in which the Rules were handled, that says aeverything abt the depths to which the R/DNC has sunk under Priebus’s leadership, and how low are Trump’s supporters. The Republicans have made clear who they really are – and it ain’t pretty.

Speaking of the Rules, I am going to go listen to Steve Deace now to see what he has to say per your mention previously.

    Don’t mess with Texas.
this should be a law in all states

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Good for Texas! Other states need to follow their example. I don’t mean “blue” states because I don’t really think of them as American any more.

  16. piper Says:

A step back – I’m going to defend Melania and her speech last night. In many ways, she is a Stepford Wife, knowing that she has to accede to Donald’s wishes if she wants to remain married to him. Yes one could call her a gold digger using her body to live the high life but history has loads of women who followed that route. Yet, in many of the campaign pics, she looks unhappy preferring to be somewhere of her choosing instead of being used as eye-candy to garner men’s attention. Did she actually write the speech, working on it for 6 to 8 weeks – NO – it was written by a ghost writer with various phrases inserted by Donald. Posing for pics probably comes naturally for her but public speaking is not her forte.

Personally I blame Donald and his team for ‘stupidity’ in not realizing that social media and internet would catch the pithy comments uttered by another inept person, Michelle. So again the web and media is focusing attention on the Trumps at what cost – put-downs and stinging comments.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

By all accounts she didn’t want to give a speech. And yes it is Trump and his campaign thugs that bullied her into giving a speech.

But if she doesn’t like the way she’s treated it may be time for her to move on like his other wives. I’m sure he’s got another honey all picked out.

You have to believe she signed a non-disclosure agreement like all the others. She will be well paid for that so long as she keeps her mouth shut.

Being a gold-digger has its perks and it’s problems. She’s not a fool, she knew that going in. Although I doubt she signed on for this 3 ring circus.

It must also sting that Trump won’t listen to her but will listen to Ivanka.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I appreciate your point, but really – that she plagiarized in the first place is problematic, but that she chose MICHELLE OBAMA, a woman widely despised by the Right (though you wouldn’t know it now), is also problematic.

What is irritating me abt all of this today are all the people who screamed bloody murder abt Obama plagiarizing Deval Patrick keep bringing that up as if it justifies what Trump did. It does not. One does not negate the other. Yet now they act like we should just accept it because, well, Obama did it! WTH?

And it seems she is as truthful as her husband, which should not be TOO much of a surprise – she is married to him, after all. Seems she lied abt her college education:

  17. kenoshamarge Says:

I truly wish that no principled Republican would speak at the Trump Convention. But that isn’t going to happen.

Even a principled Democrat like Sheriff David Clarke spoke and lord knows I respect him.

So here’s another guy I just read about:

The most important GOP Convention speaker the media won’t tell you about

Darryl Glenn is the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Colorado, one of the few truly purple states left on the electoral map. Glenn is an African American veteran and former county commissioner who waltzed out of the primary with a commanding plurality of votes, ready to take on incumbent Democratic Senator Michael Bennett in November. Bennett is one of the most vulnerable Democrats in the Senate, and represents a rare opportunity for a Republican pickup in a year that otherwise is stacked pretty heavily against Republicans.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Huh – I haven’t heard SQUAT abt him, even when I still watched Fox (months ago, I’ll grant you). I mean, I get the MSM doesn’t want to say anything abt him, but you’d think some of the conservative outlets would have been ALL over this…

  18. kenoshamarge Says:

    Remember that self funding thing?

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Again, the irony of him calling everyone in the universe a liar considering no one has lied more than TRUMP has.

There is so much that should become blatantly obvious to the left. They cry and cry yet all of our people are expendable to the elites.

  20. piper Says:

hmmmmmm – Donald and Marla separated in 1997 and divorced in 1999. When did Melania and Donnie become a couple. It seems the cheater was working on next wife instead of reconciling with said wife.
    Last night Melania said,
“However, when it comes to my husband, I will say that I’m definitely biased, and for a good reason. I have been with Donald for 18 years and I have been aware of his love for this country since we first met. He never had a hidden agenda when it comes to his patriotism because, like me, he loves this country very much.”

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Well, he cheated on Ivana with Marla. He and Melania met in the ’90’s from what I just saw doing a search.

Trump has bragged abt getting married women to sleep with him, so there is that…

Oh my dear Lord – “My Little Pony”?? Wow…

      And Marge, love the cartoon!

    • piper Says:

Honestly I could care less that she copied a paragraph or two from Michelle. It’s the lies that are being told to justified this copying which really is not a big deal. Almost positive that Melania and Donald visited the WH several times and met the Obamas. Who knows she might even admire Michelle.

For me, the bottom line is that the republicans have lost their way and collective minds by endorsing Don the Con.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I hear you, piper – and I am sure she DOES know Michelle and likely DOES admire her. I mean, the Trumps are Democrats after all! 😉

I just can’t believe how the same people who screamed abt Obama’s plagiarism are now justifying Melania’s.

But I have to say, I am a stickler for not using the words of others and passing them off as your own. I railed against Obama doing it, and Melania shouldn’t have done it, either. If a speechwriter did it, that person should be fired. What should NOT be happening is the Trump camp trying to justify it. But I’m a curmudgeon, so there is that!

  22. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Well, it”s official. The Republican Party is the Democratic Party having nominated a Democrat to run as its nominee. What a mad, mad, mad world in which we live.

I simply cannot believe how insane this country has become. Who would have ever DREAMED this loudmouth, racist, misogynist, petulant, childish, not-so-great-thinking-or-talking, arrogant con man would be the nominee for the Republicans. They have lost their minds. Truly lost their minds.
