Things I Didn’t Know *Weekend Open Thread*

Okay that’s 7 things I didn’t know. All interesting to me because I’m an information junkie. I like to know things. I have been referred to, many times, in my family as a mine of useless information. That’s an opinion I don’t understand because to me all information is useful. I proved it so many times that no one in my family will play trivial pursuit or Jeopardy with me any more. Useless? I think not.

Mind-Boggling Facts About Pineapples:

🌑 It takes almost 3 years for a single pineapple to reach maturation.

🌑 Pineapple plants have really pretty flowers. The pineapple plant’s flowers — which can vary from lavender to bright red — produce berries that actually coalesce together around the fruit’s core. So the pineapple fruit itself is actually a bunch of “fruitlets” fused together.

🌑 Once harvested, pineapples don’t continue to ripen. That means that every single pineapple in the grocery store is as ripe as it will ever be so don’t buy one and save it for a week, thinking it will ripen. The difference in colors is mostly based on where the pineapples were grown so a green pineapple can be just as sweet and delicious as a golden brown one.

Pineapples are not only tasty they have enormous benefits health wise:

Pineapple fruit contains a proteolytic enzyme bromelain that breaks down protein in the food. Bromelain also has anti-inflammatory, anti-clotting and anti-cancer properties. Studies have shown that consumption of pineapple regularly helps fight against arthritis, indigestion and worm infestation.

If you want to read more fun facts about this amazing plant click here. Been eating pineapples most of my life and I knew practically nothing about them.

Here are some little known facts about our 16th President. Some I knew, most I did not.

🌑 At 6 foot, 4 inches, Abraham Lincoln was the tallest president.

🌑 Lincoln was the first president to be born outside of the original thirteen colonies.

🌑  Lincoln was the first president to be photographed at his inauguration. John Wilkes Booth (his assassin) can be seen standing close to Lincoln in the picture.

🌑 There are no direct descendents of Abraham Lincoln even though he had 4 sons.

You can find more little known facts about Lincoln here if you’re interested.

There are probably a lot more things I didn’t know about Lincoln and other presidents but that could be a whole book not just one post. So let move on to another topic.

We all talk about the Constitution and many of us can quote parts of it but here’s a few things I didn’t know and bet you didn’t know either:

  1. The U.S. Constitution is the shortest national constitution in the world at 4,400 words.
  2. The word ‘democracy’ is not used once in the U.S. Constitution.
  3. Over 11,000 amendments to the Constitution have been proposed, only 27 have been ratified.
  4. Benjamin Franklin was the oldest signer of the constitution at 81. He died at age 84.
  5. George Washington initially proposed a ‘day of thanks’ or Thanksgiving Day as a way to honor the Constitution.
  6. While drafting, the Constitution included a clause that would abolish slavery 20 years after its implementation.

How about some fascinating facts about horses?

🌑 Horse Laugh? You may have seen a horse making a strange expression where it curls its upper lip and bares its teeth into a wide grin. This makes the animal look like it’s laughing. In reality, this is part of a special nose-enhancing technique called a flehmen response.

Horses pull this amusing face in order to direct scents floating in the air toward special olfactory glands that are located at the end of the horse’s nasal passage. The lip-curling and the slight tilting of head help the animal to waft these smells toward these glands. The horse isn’t laughing at you, it’s just trying to determine whether you smell bad.

The flehmen response is far more common in male than female horses. Much like giraffes, stallions often sample the urine of mares this way to check if they’re in heat.

🌑 There are about nine million American horses. There are approximately 58 million horses in the world and the vast majority of them are cared for by humans.

🌑 Police horses have been used in peacetime law enforcement since the 17th century and the first official mounted police unit was established in 1805. This London-based unit was a massive success, and in a few years, both Australia and America had adopted the idea.

Little Known Facts About Recycling:

I know, I know, many Conservatives and most Republicans tend to bristle about recycling since the left shoves it down our throats. But most of us have been ardent recyclers all our lives if you think about it. The left just takes credit for it and then tries to force it on others. As they do about so much else.

As a rabid composter I have been recycling all my life since I learned this useful way to use my own garbage from my grandparents. My neighbors go to the gardening center and actually pay for compost. I just shake my head since I have bushels of the stuff I’ve composted in my own back yard.

So here are some things you may not know about recycling”

🌑 Over 60% of the trash that ends in garbage cans could be recycled.

🌑 About 1/3 of the items in most dumps are packaging materials that could be recycled.

🌑 Most people produce about 4.4 pounds of trash per day. This adds up to about 1.5 tons of solid waste per year.

🌑 Recycling one ton of plastic can save up to 2,000 gallons of gasoline.

What a great, fun, informative, AND entertaining post, Marge! Thanks so much for this!

We just had a pair of dolphins swim up to our dock then continue fishing. It was WILD watching, and LISTENING, to them. Suzy got some video and photos, so hopefully I’ll be able to add to this later. WOW! I love living in the Lowcountry…

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Dolphins at your dock? Outstanding! Now I have dolphin envy too! 🐬

Glad you like the post Rev, I figured we needed to wash the taste of the Trump Convention out of our mouths. At least for a while.

Being the political addicts we are we’ll be right back at it very soon.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

LOL – I can appreciate that! Suzy has them at Facebook, but she hasn’t sent them yet so I can upload them to Youtube (well, the Jordan one, yes – but it still hasn’t shown up).

It was amazing – no doubt abt it. Watching them come up for air, try to dislodge some oysters, swimming around, was just serene and a true gift…

Yeah – you’re right – we will be right back at it!

  2. helenk3 Says:

I must have been working when this show was on. Wish I had been able to see it then. Now I will watch it on a computer.

  3. helenk3 Says:

this should be interesting. over 19,000 e-mails from the DNC

  4. helenk3 Says:

    about that party unity thing

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Isn’t it amazing that the old fool goes out and attacks Ted Cruz after the Convention? Even going back to throwing aspersions on Ted’s father? What a Doofus.

Steve Deace is predicting, based on such asinine behavior that Trump will get a very small “bounce” from the Convention. Perhaps none at all.

And remember, he got the lowest ratings for a Convention in the last 12 years. That took me by surprise – I thought a lot more people would turn in to see the freak show.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I was coming to post this EXCELLENT Stephen Hayes article a friend had at Facebook abt how freakin’ INSANE Trump is. And he is.

I love Hayes anyway, and am glad to see he is still speaking up for the sanity crowd:

        • kenoshamarge Says:

I also think Hayes is great. I’ve loved him for years and although he’s a tad more hawkish I still agree with him about 80% of the time.

Whenever we, Helen or I, would post anything from Hayes at NQ , LJ would say what a jerk Hayes was. Can’t get through to a closed mind. He didn’t like Sowell, VDH and a host of others that we read – should have told me something.

  5. helenk3 Says:

has anyone checked to see if pokeyman-go has more followers than the viewers of the republican convention or those who plan to watch the dem convention?

  6. kenoshamarge Says:

Stolen from comments at Right Scoop:

From a sermon given by Frederick Lewis Donaldson in Westminster Abbey, London, on March 20, 1925.

    “The seven social sins are:

    Wealth without work.

    Pleasure without conscience.
    Knowledge without character.
    Commerce without morality.
    Science without humanity.
    Worship without sacrifice.
    Politics without principle.”

  7. kenoshamarge Says:

Donald Trump Is Crazy, and So Is the GOP for Embracing Him

    By Stephan F. Hayes

Yes, Donald Trump is crazy. And, yes, the Republican party owns his insanity.

Fewer than twelve hours after Republicans rallied in support of his nomination for the presidency, Trump once again implied that Rafael Cruz, Ted Cruz’s father, was involved in the JFK assassination. At a press availability during an event to thank campaign volunteers Friday morning, Trump revived suggestions that the elder Cruz was an associate of Lee Harvey Oswald, Kennedy’s assassin, and that they two were together months before the assassination.

Hayes continues to eviscerate the vulgar old lunatic and I particularly enjoyed the following paragraph:

The Republican nominee for president made comments Friday that one might expect from a patient in a mental institution, the kind of stuff you might read on blog with really small print and pictures of UFOs. And yet his remarks barely register as news. There are no condemnations from fellow Republicans. His supporters shrug them off as Trump being Trump.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Ahaha – I should have kept looking at comments – of COURSE you would have seen this excellent post by Hayes. 😀

      • kenoshamarge Says:

        I’m a fan and he’s been consistently anti-Trump.

As has Jonah Goldberg. They are two of the best IMO.

I’ve added Ben Shapiro to my list. At first I was sad for the voices I’d lost but now I’m happy for the new ones I’ve gained as well as some of the old, familiar voices I trusted.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I absolutely concur with your assessment. Wouldn’t you just LOVE to take one of those cruises with Hayes and Goldberg? That would be fantastic!

And Shapiro is very good, too…

  8. kenoshamarge Says:

  9. kenoshamarge Says:

Poll: Did Cruz Ruin His Political Career By Refusing To Endorse Trump? Not Quite.

Disappointing those in the Trump camp, most of all the candidate himself, who want to savage Cruz and end his career, the results showed 40% of those surveyed thought Cruz did the right thing; 32% opposed it, and 12% were undecided.

  10. kenoshamarge Says:

  11. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Here is our Jordan, quick glimpse of TC, and Peanut the Pony from last week. Amazing that Jordan is 36, isn’t it? All thanks to our friend, Beth, who takes exceedingly great care of him:

    • kenoshamarge Says:

How old is Jordan? I thought you said he was an older gentleman. If so he sure doesn’t look it – he’s beautiful!

      And Peanut, adorable!

  12. piper Says:

Drumpfy now wants Bernie to break his pledge to Hillary. Only what he wants matters and anyone who doesn’t fall in line gets pilloried and ridiculed. Polls, smolls, those which the media show us and then there are internal polls which probably have Donnie down at the bottom of the stripper’s pole.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Isn’t that just the epitome of who Don the Con is? He’s having a hissy fit like a 2 year old because he says Cruz broke his pledge while at the same time trying to get Bernie to go back on his endorsement. What a monumental POS!

      Oh and remember this:

  13. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

And here are the dolphins who came to visit this morning:

    • mcnorman Says:

That is a great way to greet the day!

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Thanks so much for sharing that great moment. Tell Suzy how much we appreciate her talent with a camera. She’s awesome!

    • helenk3 Says:

I saw a thing on facebook today with a guy feeding fish at the end of a dock. they were coming right up to the dock to get food. Maybe your dolphins would do the same thing. it is worth a try

  14. kenoshamarge Says:

  15. helenk3 Says:

dippy debbie will not speak at DNC

    • kenoshamarge Says:

And Bernie Sanders is demanding she be removed as the head of the DNC. Her whole finger on the scale nonsense to help Clinton was so stupid. Now she is being shown as incompetent and Bernie is holding a grudge. Who do you think Hillary needs more at this point – DWS or Bernie? Bye, bye Debbie is my guess.

      • amarissa Says:

Definitely, DWS should resign or else she will damage Hillary even more! I cannot stand her and never did!

      • helenk3 Says:

dippy debbie stepped down and donna brazile is in. What I remember about donna is her telling a young first time voter who did not want to vote for backtrack to “stay home”

  16. helenk3 Says:

there will be no Russians in Rio

    • kenoshamarge Says:

As they should be. But I find the irony of the cheating. corrupt Olympic Committee acting all self-righteous amazing.

  17. helenk3 Says:

this says a lot about today’s democratic party

    • kenoshamarge Says:

It does. Sadly. They are so concerned with the black vote that they are supporting the worst of black culture. I wonder how the good, decent black people feel when those that prey on them in their communities and neighborhoods are rewarded for being criminals and thugs.

The mother of Michael Brown is a disgusting media whore. She’s milked her “celebrity” for all it’s worth ever since he died. And he didn’t even live with her because she couldn’t handle him.

The problems of the black people begin and end with themselves and the welfare culture the Dems encouraged on them which destroyed the black family. Then add in the Dem encouragement of abortion to destroy millions of black babies and you have the corruption of a people. Sadly the race industry scum like Sharpton and Jackson are a part of it.

  18. helenk3 Says:

    stolen from the crawdad hole

clinton cash streaming on breitbart today. 2-5p and 8-11p

    • kenoshamarge Says:

And according to report’s Dinesh D’Souza’s movie about Clinton is devastating. If crazy Don the Con would just STHU she would be getting destroyed. But instead we see a crazy old man against a corrupt old woman. Many think corrupt is safer than crazy.

    • helenk3 Says:

      just watched this.
imho Gitmo was made for the clintons

  19. helenk3 Says:

    it is a puzzlement

  20. helenk3 Says:

why my tv is kept on gettv all day now

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I think God is punishing this country for it’s sins. Last week we had the corrupt lying Republicans and their Convention. Now we will be punished with Democrats. I will not watch. There ain’t enough Pepto Bismal to allow me to do so. And besides, I don’t want to!

  21. helenk3 Says:

I just got an e-mail from DISH saying that all week like I will get the channel RIDE free. It has all kinds of shows about horses. I do not know what number channel it is on other carriers but it is on 248 on dish. I thought that Amy would be interested while she is recuperating

  22. kenoshamarge Says:

I am having massive computer problems and have to fight the dang thing tooth nail just to get anything working. So if I don’t respond it’s probably because I can’t. I intend to keep trying but I think the time has come to take this puppy into the shop and let an expert work on it.

  23. kenoshamarge Says:

Rolling Stone Reporter in Fake UVA Rape Story Case Terminated

The reporter who wrote the debunked Rolling Stone article on the gang rape of a University of Virginia student has been “terminated” by the magazine, according to court papers filed this week.

  24. helenk3 Says:

    just awesome

  25. piper Says:

Interesting if true – Koch brothers pull funding from Ron Johnson after attendance at convention and actively campaigning for Drumpf.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I didn’t know Ron Johnson was campaigning for Trump. Now I won’t vote for him. Which means unless I really want to go and vote for Gary Johnson just to register my protest against both major parties there isn’t much point to voting at all.

      • piper Says:

I feel a lot of people sold their souls to the devil hoping for whatever – money, support or ???? but we all know that Drumpfy has eyes only for himself and will not help down ticket. Hopefully I can find someone somewhere on the down ticket to cast a vote for.
Too bad my city officials are not for re-election now as they have forsaken us property owner to build and build more in the old Delco plant area by giving new business all kinds of tax breaks. Meijer and IKEA will not have to pay property taxes for at least 20 years – sweet.
Meanwhile our school officials are building the Taj Mahal High School addition after the Taj Mahal police station that built approx. 13 years ago.
And who pays for all of this – property taxes which our current mayor keeps claiming that the city hasn’t raised our taxes for many years, however, homes were reassessed and lo and behold all our home values have gone up which boils down to increased property taxes.

  26. piper Says:

Is it as hot as hades in your part of the state? I worked outside for several hours and now need another shower – heat index being reported as being over 100 so I decided to forgo my long bike ride and do a few chores outside which obviously took longer than planned.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Yes it is hot as hades! A rain storm just blew through with thunder, lighting and darn little water. Now it’s muggier than ever.

Help I’m a prisoner of my air conditioner(s).

I’ve been going outside to water my plants early in the morning but some mornings it hasn’t cooled down much.

I cannot take heat. I got what they called sun poisoning when I was a kid living in Texas when my dad was stationed there. Heat stroke I imagine. Anyway I spent a couple of days in the hospital and heat makes me sick ever since. I got very fair skin both from my Danish Grandmother and my Dad’s Irish side of the family. Sun is not my friend. I prefer the cold. At least I can put on warmer clothes. I’m way too old and shriveled to run around naked like I would like to do.

So when I came home from church I put on my lightest nightgown and have worn it all day. It’s the closest thing to naked I’m willing to do outside of a shower.

      • piper Says:

I hear you. I like a long X-large t-shirt to wear inside. I love being outside but need to be extra careful as my background is Swedish and Russian, and in June had a squamos growth removed from my face. Luckily is was caught early and I had an excellent dermotologist.
Tomorrow should be a bit cooler.

  27. kenoshamarge Says:

Faster than a speeding bullet – Hillary campaign hires fired DWS. My guess, she knew to much to be bus undered.

Bernie is not going to be happy.

If that isn’t a middle finger to the Bernie Sanders voters, I don’t know what is.

  28. helenk3 Says:

    donna trashed bernie too

this is getting to be like the gang that couldn’t shoot straight
there is so much incest in the dem party that “I’m my own grandpa” should be the theme song
