Butterflies and Bunny Rabbits *Weekend Open Thread*

by

After the past week I needed a rest, a least momentarily, from politics. I felt a need for a cleansing that a shower just doesn’t reach. Even letting water pummel my head doesn’t cleanse my brain. How do politicians live with such dirt all the time? How do they live with themselves? Oh well, onto Butterflies and Bunnies.

Butterflies:

Did you know that  Butterflies  are found on all continents except Antarctica, and scientists estimate that there are approximately 12-15,000 species of butterflies? There are still thousands butterfly species that have not been found or described by scientists. In the United States and Canada, more than 750 species of butterflies have been recorded. A few kinds of butterflies are still being discovered. I knew there were lots of kinds of butterflies but had no idea there were that many.

The Queen Alexandra Birdwing (Ornithoptera alexandrae) is the largest living butterfly, with a wingspan that stretches almost a foot across. One the rarest butterflies in the world, it’s found only in the rain forests of New Guinea.

Isn’t that gorgeous? Imagine a wingspan of nearly 12 inches.

The Monarch Butterfly is the  best-known butterfly in North America.

Monarchs are known for their long annual migrations. In North America, they travel long distances south in the fall, and north in the spring. They start to migrate south in about August. They must get to frost-free areas. Freezing will kill them. A migration towards the north starts in the spring.

Pure beauty! Any day I see a Monarch Butterfly, is for me, a good day. Their bright colors are a cheery reminder that nature is filled with beauty if we stop to see it.

Blue wing butterflies exhibit more colors than their name implies. The adults display black markings on the upper sides of their wings and a tan, leaf-like design on the undersides. When at rest, the butterflies hold their wings in a position that exposes their cryptic wing undersides, allowing them to virtually disappear in the tropical forest. The males are a richer, deeper blue, while the females appear in duller shades and exhibit more strongly striped upper wing patterns.Mexican Bluewing | Myscelia ethusa | Family: Nymphalidae | Subfamily: Biblidinae | Tribe: Epicaliini | Wingspan: 2.4 to 3.2 in | Photos © Florida Museum, by Ryan G. Have you ever wondered What Do Butterflies Eat? I never thought much about it. I have two Butterfly Bushes in my back yard to attract them so I assumed that there was something about them to appeal to a butterfly’s stomach. If they have stomachs. Oh my, my ignorance is showing.

For starters, the larvae (caterpillars) of butterflies eat ONLY leaves of plants. Different caterpillars like to eat certain kinds of plants. The leaves allow the caterpillar to grow and get all of the vitamins needed to transform into a beautiful butterfly. In turn, the adult butterflies consume all sorts of different things including nectar, water and even liquids from some of the fruits we consume. If you are looking to attract butterflies to your backyard, simply plant a few fruit-bearing trees along with plenty of flowers and you should definitely have yourself a back yard full of butterflies. They especially like to drink from mushy slices of banana, oranges and watermelon.  More information at: http://www.thebutterflysite.com/what-butterflies-eat.shtml#sthash.IzYfYUBr.dpuf

Who knew that Butterflies liked to drink from watermelons? Not me. From now on whenever I get a watermelon, which is weekly in the summer, at least one piece will be put in the backyard for the butterflies. If you have a further interest in butterflies here are 10 Fascinating Facts About Butterflies you might like to read.

Now bunnies…

All about Rabbits.

Rabbits are cute little mammals found everywhere in the world. Some books mention that rabbit is one of the most popular pets, after dogs and cats of course.

Their popularity probably elevated because of their cute appearance with funny little face; relatively quiet, docile and friendly behavior. They’re smooth fur or body hair, tease everyone, especially kids, to touch, cuddle and play with them.

Come on now, all together… Awwww

Bunnies can be pests in someone’s garden but I keep mine so well fed they never bother mine much. And when they did? Worth it to see them – especially the babies scampering around the back yard. I specifically planted leaf lettuce for them for years. I am no longer up to that and do most of my gardening in large pots so I just bribe their presence with store bought produce. They don’t seem to mind.

I guess my favorite bunny is the lop ear. My daughter had the cutest black and white miniature lop ear for a 4-H project. She named it Chloe and we all loved that rabbit. Even when my daughter let it hop around the living room and leave us little reminders of her presence. We cleaned up and didn’t mind where many might have. In our family the bunny and the daughter were more important than the mess.

The picture above looks very much like Chloe did the day we brought her home. I’m sure you see why we all fell in love.

There are too many kinds of bunnies for me to even begin to talk about in one post. Especially since other than loving them I am abysmally ignorant. But I did get the taste of 2 dang political conventions out of my mouth and out of my brain. And that’s a good enough reason to discuss Butterflies and Bunnies for me.

Have a great weekend guys!

I love this post!!! We have lots of beautiful butterflies here, and just had a Monarch the other day around our Meyer Lemon tree. We have a butterfly bush for them which has the added benefit of very fragrant flowers.

And the BUNNIES!!!!! Your Chloe must have been ADORABLE!! Bunnies are so cute. They are VERY good for cats who are neurotic, btw. They are like therapy animals to them. How sweet that you planted lettuce just for them. And yes, it would be worth it to see the little babies hop-hop-hopping around!

    Thanks, Marge!

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Glad you like it. Did you know about butterflies and watermelon? I love doing these posts, I always learn something.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I did NOT know abt butterflies and watermelon! They grow them all around here, and our local farm stand (which also has delicious casseroles, cakes, pies, and more) has them. We’re going to have to get one TOMORROW! 😀

  2. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Since you mentioned Steve Deace’s show from Hillary’s acceptance night, I have to share the following CNN article. It says basically what Deace said – the Reps allowed the Dems to out-Republican them:

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/29/politics/democratic-convention-gop-moment-national-security/index.html

    • kenoshamarge Says:

      They absolutely did!

As Deace, and Glen Beck both said, the Dems came off as the people that care about this country. And as Jonah Goldberg said so very, very well, the Dems came off as the people that loved their country and the GOP came off as loving Trump. What a mess!

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I’ll say, Marge. It is truly upsetting and disconcerting. I cannot believe the way the GOP destroyed itself for the likes of TRUMP…

A dear friend shared this fantastic Facebook link from Boone Hall Plantation Boone Hall is in Mt. Pleasant, SC, abt 50 – 60 minutes from us (on the other side of Charleston). They had the Budweiser Clydesdales there last week, and one of their people took this video:

14 Embarrassing Celeb Hillary Cult Tweets From the DNC Finale

It’s finally over. The quadrennial orgy of emotion and hyperbole featuring celebrities, the mainstream media, and Democratic politicians wrapped up last night and many of us have been giving ourselves Silkwood showers since then simply because we had to hear about it.

    https://pjmedia.com/trending/2016/07/29/14-embarrassing-celeb-hillary-cult-tweets-from-the-dnc-finale/?singlepage=true

If you’ve ever read some of the stupid things that Cher has tweeted over the years you won’t be surprised to see she outdid herself over Hillary. To quote Cher – all in caps mind you:

    EXCITED 2WORK 4HERHAVE WORKED 52YRS 2MAKE PPL THRILLED,FEEL,SING,SEEM FRIENDS W/EVERY PERSON IN EVERY ARENA.WANT 2BRIING PPL 2GETHER 4HER

I took out all the cute little emoticons but you get the idea. Now everyone rush to vote for Hillary because this moron says so.

  5. piper Says:

Republicans who are citing why they’re voting for HRC. Don’t agree about about some of their reasons but I can definitely see why Drumpf is the wrong choice for our country. Here’s one person’s explanation.

‘Douglas Brand, professor of political science at the College of the Holy Cross, wrote in Fortune Magazine, “To support Trump, we must sacrifice our principles and reconcile our minds to his”

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/07/25/the-biggest-gop-names-backing-hillary-clinton-so-far.html

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I can’t sacrifice my principles and reconcile my mind to voting for Hillary either. Two such unworthy people being the choice people are supposed to make is a disgrace to a great nation.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Nope, me either. Hard to believe we so wanted, worked, and fought for this very thing just 8 yrs ago…

  6. piper Says:

Read this rationale for voting for Drumpf the other day which proves my point about the level of cognitive dissonance some people are experiencing.

‘Voting for Don is justifying that fantasy trumps reality.’

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Am I having a senior moment or does that rationale make no sense whatsoever?

      • piper Says:

None of the reasons given for voting for either Donald or Hillary make sense for me, not from so-called intellectuals, press, academia, celebrities do. We seem to be living in crazy times when the worst of the wurst get ‘selected’ to be the party standard.
Will I vote this year – maybe if I can find someone with principles, morals and integrity who hasn’t come out and publicly supported either Agent Orange candidate.

        • helenk3 Says:

we have this problem. We have to look at our selves in the mirror and answer to ourselves for our actions.
so when people start saying principles do not matter, we know something is wrong and will not go there.
so I for one will not vote for a president for the first time in over 50 years

          • kenoshamarge Says:

I will vote for Gary Johnson, although I don’t much like him, just so my vote is recorded against Trump and Hillary. Johnson hasn’t a chance of doing anything but sticking a spoke in both major parties wheels.

And I think it would be fantastic if he were able to get enough support to get on the debate stage. That would send another message to both parties.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I think it would be fantastic if Johnson got on the debate stage, too. That would be something to see!

I have to say, though – Hillary is much smarter than Donald. I think she will run circles around him. He will resort to his ad hominem attacks and she will not let it go like the other Rep. candidates did.

I reckon we’ll see soon enough.

Oh, and I am not all that crazy abt Johnson, either – and it will definitely be a protest vote. Hopefully, those of us who will vote for him take away votes Trump thinks he is gonna get…

You hear a lot about the amazing migration of the tiny hummingbirds but seldom do people even know about the migration of the Monarch. I saw this documentary a while ago and had completely forgotten about. Thanks for bringing it Helen. I’ll not lost it this time. I’m sending it to Lou right away. He never saw it and he adore Monarchs.

Looks like if someone should go to jail it should be Mosby. She’s been playing politics from the gitgo. She just wanted to help her career. It looks like she may have torpedoed it all by herself.

That would put a smile on my face.

  10. kenoshamarge Says:

Trump thinks his trump card is that people dislike and distrust Hillary more than him. I don’t think so. I think the dislike and distrust is about even. However when it comes to which one is nuts…

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

You are so right. That’s what I meant above abt the debates. Regardless what one thinks of Hillary, she is definitely much smarter than Trump and much more experienced at all of this. No doubt Trump’s insanity will be front and center – not that his cultists will care, but other people just might!

      • kenoshamarge Says:

It looks like he’s flailing around and claiming the DNC is cheating because two of the debates are scheduled on nights when there is an NFL game.

He even claims the NFL sent him an angry letter about the scheduling – NFL says no they didn’t.

Is he looking for a way to get out of the debates like he did in the primary? It wouldn’t surprise me.

  11. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Well this is interesting advice from Mr. Scarborough (h/t Facebook friend): http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/scarborough-calls-on-gop-to-cut-ties-with-trump/article/2598143

    • mcnorman Says:

Don’t place too much stock in what Joe says. He works for MSNBC. I know someone who researches for him. It is part of his job to do things like this. I lost all respect for him when I found out that he doesn’t really have any scruples. It’s money over scruples. This comes from the top at MSNBC.

      • mcnorman Says:

I believe his contract is $6 million.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

You can never place any stock in what Joe Scarborough says. He has no principles or core. He spews whatever happens to float to the top of the cesspool he calls a mind.

He may have once had some integrity and/or common sense. Years of sitting next to the Mika critter seems to have leached that all away.

Now the “rumor” is that he does more that sit next to her. How many Ws in Ewwww?

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, no worries, mcnorman – I don’t put a lot of stock in it. The article made clear that previously he was supportive of Trump. Just interesting that he is now speaking out of the other side of his mouth!

Perspective (the passage of time) provides time to think, analyze, and evaluate actions in a way that seems much more judicious than knee-jerk quips and vacuous exchanges characteristic of modern news rooms and Monday-morning quarterback talk shows.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where seldom is deep thought given to a matter before the mouths or pundits begin their operations.

Last year in Vancouver, I bought a beautiful hand-printed pink dress which I washed several times with dark clothes. After coming home late one muggy night I took off my clothes and threw all into the washer which I continued to fill until there was a load, obviously forgetting about the pink dress (another senior moment) which bled onto my undies and wash cloths. It’s good thing that I love pink.

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I did the same thing except it was with a black gauzy long skirt. How it got in there I don’t know. All my whites turned nasty gray.

I also like pink and would have been happier with pink than gray. Many washings, baking soda, oxyclean and every thing else I could think of and most were back to normal except for one bra that remained gray. I wear it under black tops and pretend it was planned that way.

Love that picture of the washing machine.

    Marge and Amy,
TY for the interesting facts and pics/video about butterflies, bunnies and horses. Yesterday on the New Berlin Bike Trail, a small brown rabbit with a cute white tail and I had an encounter. Thankfully he ran into the bushes before I had to swerve to avoid hitting him.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I’m glad you enjoyed them. I enjoy digging up such things – especially after two weeks of political conventions and the even worse discussions by the pundits afterward.

It’s good for my blood pressure to think about Bunnies and Butterflies.

FYI I now have the end off a watermelon sitting in the shade under my very large lilac bush. There are actually 3 butterflies on it. I don’t know what kind because I don’t want to disturb them. Such a fun fact I didn’t know will now attract more butterflies to our yard.

Maybe Don the Con should have kept his big mouth shut about the Koch Brothers. Because they actually are as rich as he claims to be. And they can prove it. I do like the description the writer below uses about Trump: “petulant 70-year-old emotionally challenged narcissistic “. Seems a perfect fit for the old fool.

Thin-Skinned Narcissist Trump Reacts to Koch Brothers Snubbing With Typical Petulance

After a report on Friday that the Libertarian Koch brother billionaires turned down a meeting with Donald Trump eliminating the opportunity for him to grovel for the kind of big money he said corrupted all other politicians except him (of course), Donald Trump reacted exactly as you would expect the petulant 70-year-old emotionally challenged narcissistic to react.

He lied about it (which, by the way, is the reason he calls everybody else a liar. He projects — but I digress).

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I was surprised too. Has Murdock decided now that the primary is over to back Hillary? Who knows? The relationship between media and Politicians is so incestuous that normal, decent people can’t keep up.

As for Melania, she paraded around in a bath towel when a reporter from Time came to interview Trump. She hasn’t changed much although personally I think she’s better looking now than she was then. More polished anyway. A billion dollars provides a lot of polish. A lot, but not enough. She’s as much a narcissist as her spouse.

      • amarissa Says:

I agree, she is better looking now. I have no respect for a woman who marries DT. As you well said, is enough to think of her as a narcissist or as one who approves of this personality disorder.

    • piper Says:

I don’t care one way or another but let’s be honest, she married him because of his money. If he’d been ordinary Joe Smoe, she wouldn’t have given him even a first look.
