It’s Tomato Time! *Weekend Open Thread*

by

Actually this time of year is time for many different wonderful and beautiful fresh produce. But my favorites have always been tomatoes. They are beautiful. And so tasty!

We plant some little grape tomatoes that we put in a dish and eat like candy. If bacon is the candy of meat – then grape tomatoes are surely the candy of veggies.

Tomatoes are a superstar in the world of health foods. For once something I love is actually good for me. happy smiley emoticon

The amazing health benefits of the tomato:

Tomatoes are by far the healthiest of the fruits and vegetables with the power to ward off some of the worst known diseases to man. With the vast variety of tomato products on the market, it really shouldn’t be difficult to get the full health benefit of tomatoes.

Then there is the history of the tomato:

The Tomato History has origins traced back to the early Aztecs around 700 A.D; therefore it is believed that the tomato is native to the Americas. It was not until around the 16th century that Europeans were introduced to this fruit when the early explorers set sail to discover new lands. Throughout Southern Europe, the tomato was quickly accepted into the kitchen, yet as it moved north, more resistance was apparent. The British, for example, admired the tomato for its beauty, but believe that it was poisonous, as its appearance was similar to that of the wolf peach.   ”

Most Europeans thought that the tomato was poisonous because of the way plates and flatware were made in the 1500’s.

Rich people in that time used flatware made of pewter, which has a high-lead content. Foods high in acid, like tomatoes, would cause the lead to leech out into the food, resulting in lead poisoning and death. Poor people, who ate off of plates made of wood, did not have that problem, and hence did not have an aversion to tomatoes. This is essentially the reason why tomatoes were only eaten by poor people until the 1800’s, especially Italians.

Ha – something, for once, went right for the poor people. Rich folks were missing a lot. Well not lead poisoning but you know what I mean.

According to what I read some of the best fruits and vegetables to be found in August are:
Bell Peppers
Beets
Cantaloupe
Carrots
Chard
Cherries
Cilantro
Corn
Cucumber
Eggplant
Garlic
Grapes
Green beans
Green onions
Onions
Peas
Plums
Potatoes
Radishes
Raspberries
Rosemary
Summer squash
Tomatoes
Watermelons
Zucchini

Of course there are lots of others but this list includes most of the things that I happen to like. Taste and location come into play in what grows best where. There are things that grow here that I don’t care for and so didn’t make my list. Maybe they made yours. But to tell you the truth, I don’t know what the hell to do with a tomatillo. Is that racist?

This time of year is nirvana for salad lovers like me. Everything is fresh, beautiful, plentiful and reasonable. We have a Farmer’s Market that sets up every Friday in the park across the street. Convenient for the things we don’t grow. I can have my delicious salads at a time when the flavors are at their peak.

Especially the Tomatoes, Parsley and the Leaf Lettuce – can’t get much fresher than going to the back yard, picking and bringing in, washing and eating.

Truthfully I don’t get much leaf lettuce, which we plant for the bunnies in the back yard and other lettuce loving critters. But we bought a big bag at the Farmer’s Market yesterday and critters and human both feasted.

I prefer romaine and iceberg so I add them too. I usually buy some good French bread and make my own croutons. This year its just been too darn hot to light the oven. So we either buy some or do with out.

We don’t have the room to grow sweet corn so we buy that too. And it is so good. I think I had a week’s allowance of butter on my sweet corn last night. And it was worth it! I also cooked some extra ears for my special Corn Meal Muffins.

These tasty treats can be made from scratch, which I do when I’m feeling energetic or from a mix when I’m not. I just add about a cup of sweet corn and a cup of shredded cheese to the mix.  I love them and they are really good with chili. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

The History of Farmers Markets

The first farmers markets technically originated in Egypt over 5,000 years ago when farmers along the Nile brought their fresh produce to be sold. Today there are farmers markets all over the world with the smallest ones being no more than 3-4 vendors selling their fresh produce to the largest one in the world in Tokyo, Japan which has over 1,700 stalls!

Can you imagine an ancient Egyptian Farmers Market?  Egyptians grew crops such as wheat, barley, vegetables, figs, melons, pomegranates and vines.  Reapers cut ripe corn with wooden sickles, edged with sharp flints. Women and children followed behind the reapers to collect any fallen ears of corn.

I confess I’ve been fascinated with Ancient Egypt all my life. But it was more with Pharaohs and Cleopatra and the like. I never just thought about farmers going about their daily lives growing the food that ended up feeding those Queens and Pharaohs.

Okay, this started out as an ode to the tomato and I’ve wandered far afield. (Yes that is a deliberate pun.) What vegetable is your favorite?

there is nothing better than a Jersey tomato. I miss them. most of the time in stores now the tomatoes have no taste.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Up until about two weeks ago all we had were ones form the store too. Like you say, no flavor. No between the two pots we have with tomatoes, 1 is for the grape tomatoes and another is a medium slicer we have good tomatoes with good flavor. When we run out there is the Farmer’s Market which has locally grown and very good.

I can’t even remember the name of the slicer – some hybrid we bought at True Value Hardware of all places. But it’s really good.

Lou loves BLT sandwiches and I’m good with an LT so long as it’s slathered with mayo. Sometimes I get the veggie bacon which is quite good.

    do you believe this?
I am sick of having to put up with second best, so someone feelings do not get hurt.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

What a bunch of bull! When that big mouthed beeotch has as many medals as Phelps she can be flag bearer. Until then she needs to shut up and keep her damn political opinions out of the Olympics.

It’s trash like her that makes me not even bother to watch much anymore.

She has a right to speak out – too bad she didn’t have the class to keep her opinions to herself and just fence. In or out of a hijab.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

A friend had mentioned this very issue this morning. That is so unbelievably disturbing. Phelps is the most decorated Olympian in HISTORY. He has never attended an Opening Ceremony because of his training. The one time he does, because he is asked to carry the flag, this woman thinks she is entitled because she is MUSLIM??? No!

This whole political correctness thing in sports is POISONOUS. It is precisely this that led to the Olympics being held in this cesspool of a country destroyed by Leftist politics that have left it poor, dangerous as hell, crime ridden, and more. Why our athletes and other athletes from around the world are subjected to this place is beyond me.

This Daily Wire article sums up the dangers there very well:

      http://www.dailywire.com/news/8154/4-reasons-rio-olympics-are-already-disaster-hank-berrien

  3. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

And in another glaringly offensive move by Olympians who completely missed the mark of what these Games are meant to be, we have this news abt the Lebanese team and what they were allowed to do to the Israelli team:

    http://www.timesofisrael.com/lebanese-olympic-team-demands-israelis-be-removed-from-shared-bus/

That the ISRAELIS had to get off the bus lest they upset these delicate intolerant, anti-Semitic jackasses is offensive in the extreme…

    • helenk3 Says:

screw them. I hope the Israeli team beats them like a drum and they go home in shame

    • piper Says:

The animosity that is displayed toward Israel and Israelis is rude, inconsiderate and just plain wrong. A small group of people living in a place no bigger than Rhode Island who have contributed so much to industry, medicine, military and agriculture yet are constantly being disparaged and killed for no other reason than being Jewish. I like to the Arabs develop a country like Israel instead of whining and blaming others for their own problems.

      End of rant.

  4. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

What a fun post, Marge! I LOVE tomatoes!! Tasty! Thank you for the history, too – that was fascinating.

I love the image of you and Lou eating the grape tomatoes like candy throughout the day. Neat!

Top Seven Reasons You Should Not Vote for Hillary

Despite attempts to browbeat us into accepting a binary viewpoint, Trump being unfit does not mean anyone should support Shrillary since she too is unfit. Steven Crowder lists his top five reasons not to vote for her:

    http://moonbattery.com/?p=74912

I am now and always will be #NeverTrump. But my disgust for the Republicans who are jumping ship and saying they will vote for Hillary disgust me. Shut you pie holes, vote for the good people down ticket, if there are any and quit looking for a headline.

This election should be forever known as the elections where Republicans exposed themselves for all the world to see. Need a new party folks – this one is too far gone to fix.

Salon: The Iran Deal Is A Disaster–And Obama Is To Blame

Is this really Salon? The uber-progressive, race-baiting rag that has long been source material for conservatives to get a great laugh over the absurd lengths they go to paint American and the Right as racist, misogynistic, and sexist. Because Carrie Sheffield writes that a) the Iran nuclear deal is a disaster; b) Obama is to blame; and c) the $400 million ransom is proving Republican misgivings to be true:

    • piper Says:

Don’t know as I’m not a doctor or play one on TV. In these of technology one can suspect that the video of her having a seizure could be doctored. Never seen a seizure like the one in the video and this is after working for many years with children with seizure disorders and seeing adults having grand mal or petit ones.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I think that her coughs could be a side effect from High Blood Pressure Medication. I get the same thing from mine and am never more than a pocket away from cough drops. I can go days with having the hacking cough and then suddenly it’s back and may only be around for a day or for 3 or 4. It’s sounds bad but is just a side effect.

Given that she’s overweight she probably has high blood pressure – they seem to go hand in hand when you get older.

I was on 4 different medications for mine before I just stuck with this one because some have worse side effects that what I get with this one. One gave me headaches so bad I wanted to pound my head against the wall.

  10. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

A friend had this at Facebook, most appropriate for this Vegetable themed post:

    Cucumbers

Btw, I love most vegetables, but tomatoes are way up there. I love grape tomatoes too, along with eggplant, squash, spinach, zucchini, brussel sprouts, all kinds of vegetables. Vegetables – yum!

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I too love vegetables – one reason that being a vegetarian is easy for me. Note I said vegetarian not vegan. I am NOT giving up cheese!

I didn’t know about cucumbers although I like them I don’t make much of a point of eating them now that we don’t grow them ourselves. They take up too much room and when we tried them in a pot they didn’t do well.

I will start eating more of them. And preach the benefits of cucumbers to Lou – who doesn’t like them but has suffered from kidney stones.

Also, anything that rehydrates the body in this long, hot summer is good.

Thanks for the information my friend. Learning is always a good thing and learning about foods that are good for us is great!

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

My pleasure! And thank you too for the great post! Isn’t it wonderful when we love things that are so good for us? Ahaha…

An Open Letter to Sean Hannity and his Ilk

For those Sean Hannity types out there, don’t you dare start putting the blame for a Trump loss anywhere else besides yourselves for being a Donald Trump slappy.

    And here is why.

We tried to warn you about Donald Trump, early on.

We warned you he was a fraud – you said you didn’t care.

He is such a big baby. Always throwing a tantrum every single time he doesn’t get his way. And remember, his throwing a tantrum abt a floor challenge at the Convention worked thanks to Priebus, the media, and candidates folding (unlike the Dems who seemed to RELISH the thought, and the media,of course, didn’t treat it as a terrible concept) seemed to work just fine. So yeah – no doubt he figures he can go after the Electoral College this time and disparage it ahead of time just in case for when he loses. Then he can blame that archaic system as the reason why not his deplorable character…

      • piper Says:

Thank you for letting me out of wordpress jail.
Totally agree with your comment, he is a yuuuge baby given his supposed standing in the business community and wealth department.

  13. kenoshamarge Says:

I don’t know for sure if this is true – but it came from my feisty 87 year old Mother-in-law and she said to pass it one. This lady has had four surgeries – one bypass and two hip replacement surgeries because the surgeon put in the wrong hip, plus surgery on her wrist from a bad fall, all in the last 2 years.

She also got a nasty infection in her hip thanks to the hospital. She’s home and back on-line so when she says pass it on – I pass it on.

Tyson Food in Shelbyville, Tennessee has eliminated Labor Day as a paid holiday in favor of the last day of Ramadan because they have 700 Muslim employees. Tennessee is the newest Hot-Bed for Muslim immigration. According to the 2010 Government Census more Muslims are flocking to Tennessee than any other state in the union. I will no longer purchase any Tyson products.

I didn’t have the heart to tell her that we don’t by any Tyson products because of the inhumane way they raise their chickens and treat their employees.

UPDATE: I checked Snopes and it says false. Sorry Elaine. 😦

  14. piper Says:

    Marge,
Sometimes friends will give me produce from their backyard which I sometimes have a difficult time eating before it goes bad. So my solution bec. I hate throwing away food (becoming more and more like my mother even to the point of looking at celebs and wondering if the heck they are and what shows they’re acting in) is make smoothies with vegs., fruit, water and greek yogurt – always nutritious but not always tasty which I’m working to improve by adding spices and extracts.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I love making smoothies! I have to eat breakfast or I can’t take my vitamins and supplements without getting nauseous. Plus I need the energy. So I often make a smoothie. I use Greek yogurt too. I love Greek Yogurt!

When you make them yourself you can be sure that all that extra sugar they like to put into everything is eliminated. If I want to sweeten one I either add a banana or some Splenda.

I try different combinations too – some are not so good but what the heck it’s worth a try. Now after the information the Rev supplied on cucumbers I’m going to try to incorporate them in more of what I make.

He’s such an ass! His followers kept telling us how brilliant he was. He isn’t. He’s just another Johnny One Note Maxist. Considering his raising not surprising. What’s surprising is that he gets away with it here in this country. The times they are a changing – and not for the better.

So once Obama is gone we get either the shrill nails on a blackboard voice of Grandma Crook or the meanderings of a Lunatic. Incredible.

  16. helenk3 Says:

I just watched D’Neash on book tv. what an interesting speaker. He does make you think. one of the things he talks about when explaining the differences between parties is this. The republicans show you a ladder for you to climb to the top. The democrats tell you we will throw you a rope to help you get to the top. Then when you hold on to the rope , they only lift you so far. you they do not pull you to the top, but if you let go of the rope you will fall back to the bottom.
The show was on CSPAN2 maybe you could watch it on your computer. I hope the college kids that were there learned a few things and will continue to educate themselves.
