Labor Day. Weekend. Does it still mean anything more than a long weekend? More than barbeques and picnics? More than beer and brats? (I’m from Wisconsin so those two things are important! )
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
I’m allΒ in when it comes toΒ “celebrating” the working man and woman. What I am not for is the idea that working man and women means unions. Working people ALL need to be celebrated.
So I’ll just post some of my favorite working folks music and leave the rants about unions for another time. Let’s just enjoy.
Merle Haggard said it well:
Brooks and Dunn said it well too:
I know “Disco” is almost a swear word these days but I love Donna Summer and this was one of my favorites:
I did some waitressing myself and I love that she Summer showed up dressed like a waitress. If I remember correctly she even wore her waitress costume on the Carson show. Good for her.
Last and far from least is Dolly Parton and Nine to Five.

I intend to do just that Piper. Enjoy your weekend kiddo.

A friend just informed me that she is appalled that I could even think of “celebrating” Labor Day. It is a socialist holiday according to her. I agree that it was.
America has over the years turned it into an end of Summer Holiday and made it our own. All of us.
Progressives/Socialists may call it what they will – it is now an American Holiday. We can take a lemon and make lemonade as we have done so many times before. As we did with this “socialist” Holiday that is now uniquely American.

Great post, Marge!
Here’s my contribution.. Anybody old enough to remember Maynard G. Krebs’ infamous reaction to the word “work” ??
Happy Labor Day, everybody!
P.S. Hope Cuzin Amy made it through the storm OK!

I never cared much for “Gilligan’s Island”. But I did like Maynard G. Krebs in “Dobie Gillis”. Thanks for the walk down memory land.

I definitely remember Maynard G Krebs!
Great post, Marge. And yes, at this point, it is mainly a “Summer’s Over” holiday so there is that.
Cuz’n Cindy, thanks so much for asking. Our island was hitter harder than most of the Charleston area, but we fared pretty well. Mainly we lost some limbs, none TOO big, and have leaves everywhere, but other than a ton of rain and high wind, it was not anywhere near as bad as we thought it might be. Not complaining, though – I would much rather do all that is necessary to prepare for it and have it not come to fruition than the other way around!
And sorry for the late response. Our neighbors were having their annual soiree complete with live band and inviting the whole nieghborhood. It is impossible to stay in the house when it is in full swing – we tried once. So despite the difficulty for my back, we went into town for the day. BUT I got to see Jordan for the first time since before my surgery, so that alone was worth it. He continues to amaze me with what great shape he is in at his ripe old age (36).
One good thing – they will start building our house soon (the permit is taking FOREVER but should be ready by 9/12) and this will be the last time we have to put up with these people and their big parties. I hope.

Glad to hear y’all were not hit too hard—except by your neighbors! That is so exciting that your new home will begin being built soon!
Well, bless ol’ Jordan’s heart—Glad he’s doing fine.
Continue to heal well, Cuz.! And y’all take care.

Just glad to hear you are doing well except for the inconsiderate neighbors.
Ironic that their “music” causes you to leave home and I put up a post about music. Ah the mysteries of life.
Hope that it won’t be too long before car rides won’t be an endurance test.
Great news about your new house. I’ll bet you are really excited.

No, Mike Pence, we should NOT βtrust the courtβ on religious freedom
Mike Pence has some really dangerous advice for lawmakers who want to advance religious freedom at the state level: trust the courts.

Schizophrenic USA
According to the RCP Obama’s job approval is at 50.7%. His disapproval is at 45.5%. Which means 5.2% more people approve of the way he does his job and disapprove. Fair enough.
The RCP average tells us people think the country being on the “right” track at a dismal 28.7% and on the wrong “track” at 62.9%.
So 50% think he’s doing a good job but 62% say the country is on the wrong track. That kind of logic or lack of logic makes my head hurt.

Instead of Labor Day, why not make Constitution Day the new national holiday?
Thanks to a combination of innovation, market forces, and union cronyism and corruption, the labor movement as we now know it no longer deserves a national holiday:
What began as a movement of voluntary collective bargaining to protect the rights of workers has been perverted into a crony system where government-supported labor groups are able to obfuscate market forces in the private sector and bleed taxpayers dry in the public sector.

A Handy Guide To The New Gender Pronouns
We libertarians get particularly choleric when people try to use government force to curtail our freedoms, like speech. Telling me how to speak is just as bad as trying to shut me up.
http://thefederalist.com/2016/09/05/handy-guide-new-gender-pronouns/
If after reading this you mostly agree with the writer – good for you, so do I. If after reading this you are puzzled by the Libertarian party nominating Gary Johnson as their candidate, so am I. This man’s libertarianism and Johnson’s don’t seem to be the same. It also reminds me of the dimwitted Republican nominating a Democrat to be their candidate.
September 6, 2016 at 9:59 am |
You said it, Marge. Johnson is looking less and less like a Libertarian and more like a Lite Liberal. So we have three Democrats running this time around. Awesome.

Can someone explain the logic, or even the common sense in the image below? Maybe I’m having another senior moment or maybe the world around me is actually as crazy as I think it is.
