We Got What We Deserved, How To Fix It, And A Reminder *Open Thread*

“Remember one thing about Democracy. We can have anything we want and at the same time, we always end up with exactly what we deserve.” Edward Albee

And there you have it. Now that the election is over, we got what we deserved alright. Well, not what SOME of us deserved, but what we as a nation deserved by putting up the candidates we did.

We had every opportunity to select good, solid, respectable and respected, candidates. We had the opportunity to choose between people who would actually make a difference to this nation, to help right it, on both sides of the aisle. But did we? No. No, we did not. We picked the two of the worst possible choices we could.

And that says something about us, doesn’t it?

When did we become such cultists with our politicians? When did we go all in on them despite facts and evidence that should have made a difference? This sure happened in 2008 with Obama, and definitely with Trump 8 years later. But why? And how? Ever since the beginning of this election season, I was amazed to see people who had railed against the Obots, as we termed them, become Trumpanzees. On the other side, most Democrats supported Clinton, also ignoring facts and baggage that has dogged her. Both sides refused to hear anything, and I do mean anything, that would filter through about their two candidates.

What was even more surprising to me in this campaign season was the way in which Republicans embraced a candidate chosen FOR them by the opposition party. That just makes no sense to me at all. It really doesn’t. But embrace him they did, and now Donald Trump is the President-Elect of this country, a man with no filter, no impulse control, no regard for women, no self-reflection, no morality, and no experience with the position he has now won. That scares the hell out of me.

And it scares the hell out of a number of European leaders, too. Yeah, they are pretty concerned. Can’t say as I blame them, that’s for sure. Donald Trump and Foreign Policy are not often used in the same sentence, unless it is about Trump and his buddy, Putin. But that has to change now, and fast.

But this is where we are now. We have Donald Trump, game show host, philanderer, adulterer, sexual predator, as our POTUS-Elect. Okey dokey. There is lots of blame going around about how that happened, including that THIS is Obama’s legacy, adn the Democrats are to blame. Sure, I can accept that!

Thankfully, Mary Katherine Ham has an excellent idea for a way for us to restore our nation. It is one I can fully get behind. Her suggestion? Hand it over to Chip and Joanna Gaines of HGTV’s “Fixer Upper.” Why? Well, Ham has 7 good reasons, and here are a few of them from The Federalist:

1. All the Shiplap

I didn’t know what shiplap was before I watched “Fixer Upper” and neither did you, but now I know of its rustic yet sophisticated design potential. It’s a hidden treasure— a form of board used in exterior design Joanna often unearths behind some crumbly dry wall over the fireplace. I have no doubt several families in America have lost an interior wall or two to a fruitless weekend shiplap search thanks to “Fixer Upper’s” popularity.

The point is, Chip and Joanna are experts at finding and keeping what’s good about a place while gutting the rest of it on demo day with smiles on their faces. If they can recruit the “American Pickers” for Department of the Interior, we will have the most beautifully curated modern country with a healthy respect for its history and traditions. And lots of shiplap.

2. They Force People to Make Budget Choices

Wow, could we use some of this, America. Chip and Joanna are sometimes brutally honest about budget concerns and structural problems, and make homeowners reckon with hard choices. They applaud spending less on a bargain home with lots of potential, and when it comes to fancy add-ons, Joanna presents a dollar amount and three choices to the homeowner—a bonus room, a paved driveway, or a landscaped outdoor dining area, for instance.

For Congress, Joanna might say, “You have $3.7 billion in fake money you’re pretending you have. At the very least, I’m going to force you to spend it on one thing instead of three. Now, is it going to be the trust fund that also doesn’t exist, your newest program ‘for the children,’ or dubious stimulus projects of unclear efficacy?”

6. They Focus on the Important Stuff

The thing about Chip and Joanna is they seem to genuinely like being around each other and being married and raising their kids. They involve their four children in shopping trips for the show and decorating homes.

Joanna puts a lot of thought into the family table in her renovations.

“Everything happens around the table,” she said on one episode. “Chip and I won’t budge on dinner with the kids. No matter how crazy life is, we always make it a point to have dinner around the tale with our four sweet children.” […] (Click here to read the rest.)

The other four are all good ideas, too. And one other thing about the Gaines: they are deeply religious people, and put God first in their lives and in the lives of their family. That is no small thing. I think we could all use a little – make that a lot – more of that these days.

Honestly, I just didn’t see how there could be any humor able to take the edge off what is the worst election ever in my life, possibly the life of the country. Some might think that is too far, but from where I sit right now, with the two candidates we had, yeah – I’m sticking with that.

Thankfully, humor still wins the day. Leave it to Ellen Degeneres to find a way to inject it:

Well, that was another good suggestion – kick the people our of the country who leave their shopping carts in the dang parking lot spaces. Now we’re talking…

And the animal videos at the end are a lovely reminder of how we can get along no matter how different we may be. I reckon we will make it through the next four years too, come hell or high water, because really – what choice do we have? That’s America.

As a country, we deserve the Government we got. Now – how soon can we get the Gaines to fix her up?

Great post election post Amy! Those who are still having their little hissy fits, those who are “protesting” the results are foolish. It is what it is – now we need to see what we can do to make the best of things that are and hope that Trump isn’t as bad as we thought.

And just for the record, and to show how much words have changed since I was young, lighting a cop car on fire screaming to kill the winner of a legal election is NOT a protest in my lexicon. It’s a damn riot!

I’m with you and Ellen on the shopping cart deportations!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks so much, Marge. I appreciate it!

And you are so right – those ARE riots. As I mentioned in the previous thread, Suzy and I were discussing how it was the very same Dems now blowing up who are the reason why Trump was the nominee in the FIRST place. The over 12 MILLION Dems who crossed over to vote for him to fulfill the DNC playbook:

Along with the media you mentioned below, they are SINGULARLY responsibile for Trump being the nominee. They didn’t count on how angry people are at having Socialist policies shoved down our throats, though – now they know.

But yeah – these young people who have never been told no need to grow the hell up already and accept the results the same way we had to do in 2008 and 2012.

  2. kenoshamarge Says:

If nothing else I think this election has shown that a majority of the people are done with listening to the MSM. And that’s a very good thing.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Yes it is a good thing. Their own treachery came back to bite them (and us) in the behind. This is what happens when they don’t actually REPORT the news, and try to SHAPE the news. They made Trump the nominee, along with the DNC, and they have been exposed for the con artists they are.

  3. kenoshamarge Says:

And I think we will finally, after 30 years, see and end to the Clinton’s influence in politics. Dems don’t like losers and she lost an election they thought was very winnable.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I agree completely. I think they are done now. And really, there is no shame in just quietly retiring from politics now. They had a long run, have plenty of money, and can retire to a peaceful life. Bill will always be a President, and Hill always a Sec. of State. That is no small thing, and will have to be enough.

I think that what the MSM didn’t count on was the backlash from white voters for being blamed for everything. They didn’t count on people being angry enough about ObamaCare to vote for a man they didn’t like and didn’t trust but thought just might be better than Hillary.

I can, and do, respect those voters that voted for Trump as the only way they could see to put a halt to Obama and the progressive agenda. They may get screwed by Trump in the long run but they, and we, sure as hell would have gotten screwed by Hillary.

The Catholic vote went for Trump and I just couldn’t understand how that could be when he is, IMO, a Godless man. But then as I was reminded by Steve Deace on his podcast from last night, maybe the idea of “suing” nuns to make them provide birth control went a little too far for some on the left.

Maybe not all the Dems that crossed over for Trump were up to mischief. Maybe some were honestly voting against Obama and Hillary.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I agree abt the backlash, especially with the news of the ever-increasing Obamacare costs abt to hit in 2017. It has become abundantly clear that “affordable” Obamacare is not.

George Will had a great column abt all of this in my local paper today: http://www.postandcourier.com/opinion/commentary/a-ruinous-victory-for-the-gop/article_28d9dada-a6be-11e6-a921-3b39ea293dd4.html

And sure, I imagine not all of the Dems who crossed over in the Primaries were up to mischief, but I would wager the vast majority of the 12 million who crossed over were going by the DNC playbook. They just didn’t count on the anger and more that many people are feeling after 8 yrs of Socialist-lite programs and executive orders (though Trump is a BIG fan of EOs himself).

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Oh I agree that most of the crossovers were doing the biding of the DNC. But I also believe that some Catholics, even liberal Catholics, just couldn’t swallow the Obama Administration threatening to sue the Little Sisters of the Poor.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I have no doubt that is true. I totally meant to say something abt Catholics in my response – sorry! Yeah, that whole suing the Little Sisters was just ridiculous. I mean, really – WTH?? Good point!

  6. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Ben Shapiro had an excellent piece abt the protests of the Left, and how ridiculous they are: http://www.dailywire.com/news/10673/insane-anti-trump-protesters-demonstrate-why-so-ben-shapiro

Btw, Shapiro noted that Trump got fewer votes than Mitt Romney did (though abt the same as McCain). Telling, that…

    • kenoshamarge Says:

When I listened to the Deace podcast I understood what happened a lot better than I had Wednesday morning. He and Daniel Horowitz both said, unequivocally that they got it wrong – but they showed how and why the polls weren’t really all that wrong. Most of the Trump “wins” were within the margin of error. I hadn’t realized that.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Interesting, Marge. I know that FL was less than 1%, so yeah, that would be within the margin of error. They were all pretty close.

And it was interesting that Shapiro said there were fewer votes for Trump than Romney since I kept hearing how many voters were showing up. Maybe the media was trying to cover for being wrong…

Huh. I reckon 100,000 is a lot, but not so much in the scheme of things: http://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/305419-obamacare-signups-surge-post-election

  9. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

And so it begins – the explanations (recriminations?) for Clinton’s loss: http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/305501-clinton-aides-blame-fbi-director-media-for-devastating-loss

    • kenoshamarge Says:

You knew Comey was going to get a lot of the blame. I’m not sure he doesn’t deserve it. But fundamentally they made the same mistake the GOP made, should they have lost, they fielded a very flawed candidate.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, I think Comey deserves some blame, too. No doubt abt it. He had an impact ont he election and inserted himself into it. That was wrong. The media part is pretty laughable, though. I mean, really.

You are so right – both these candidates were deeply flawed…

  10. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Um, how is it that Howard Dean thinks he is going to be reaching out to the young people if he becomes the Chair of the DNC? He ain’t exactly a spring chicken: http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/305503-howard-dean-running-for-dnc-chair

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Howard Dean is like that rash you get that just won’t go away. He has long since passed any relevancy but he just will not shut up and go away. He’s a physician isn’t he? Go practice medicine and do some good for a change you old fool.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

No kidding! Good grief, just stop already, Dean!

And yes, he is a medical doctor (unlike Dr. Biden, who is a psychologist). He should just go start a practice somewhere and leave us out of it.

  11. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

This is an excellent, excellent piece at GlennBeck.com by a gay, Muslim, Pakistani Liberal Immigrant talking abt his experience of actually listening to Americans around the country, and learning that this election was abt the survival of their families. Powerful and poignant as it highlights that we must stop labeling and dividing ourselves: http://www.glennbeck.com/2016/11/10/what-a-gay-muslim-pakistani-american-immigrant-learned-traveling-to-rural-alaska-the-week-before-the-election

  12. Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I had noticed the difference in votes for Clinton and Trump too, though as the article points out, we can’t know exactly how all of us third party people would have voted with only 2 choices, but still – the numbers are telling: http://www.aol.com/article/news/2016/11/10/did-third-party-candidates-coast-hillary-clinton-the-election/21602840/

A friend had this stunning post at Facebook. This is a HUGE sea change across the country, especially the South: https://pjmedia.com/trending/2016/11/10/at-every-level-of-government-the-democratic-party-is-dead/
