🎅 Twas The Night Before Christmas 🎅 *Weekend Open Thread*

For many in my generation being read “The Night Before Christmas”, on the night before Christmas was a family tradition. I think it’s been transferred to television and other devises to tell the story to children these days. And that’s a loss.

Sitting together as a family was one of the warmest memories I have from my childhood. Television and technology cannot replace that. I’ll stop being grouchy and just get on with the poem and the author who brought so much joy to so many children over the years.

Clement Clarke Moore (1779 – 1863) wrote the poem Twas the night before Christmas also called “A Visit from St. Nicholas” in 1822. It is now the tradition in many American families to read the poem every Christmas Eve.

The poem ‘Twas the night before Christmas’ has redefined our image of Christmas and Santa Claus. Prior to the creation of the story of ‘Twas the night before Christmas’ St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children, had never been associated with a sleigh or reindeers!

Clement Moore, the author of the poem Twas the night before Christmas, was a reticent man and it is believed that a family friend, Miss H. Butler, sent a copy of the poem to the New York Sentinel who published the poem. The condition of publication was that the author of Twas the night before Christmas was to remain anonymous. The first publication date was 23rd December 1823 and it was an immediate success. It was not until 1844 that Clement Clarke Moore claimed ownership when the work was included in a book of his poetry.

(or A Visit from St. Nicholas)
by Clement Clarke Moore

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

cartoon father christmas cartoons dancing father christmas father ...

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
while visions of sugar plums danced in their heads.
And Mama in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the roof there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
tore open the shutter, and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
gave the lustre of midday to objects below,
when, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles, his coursers they came,
and he whistled and shouted and called them by name:

“Now Dasher! Now Dancer!
Now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid!
On, Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch!
To the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away!
Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky
so up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
with the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
the prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head and was turning around,
down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes–how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
and the beard on his chin was as white as the snow.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
that shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
and I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
and filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
and giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Cold and snow up to here… Ugh!

Same here with more coming our way. Some really nice person shoveled my driveway this morning – I wish I knew so I could thank them. This act of kindness is a bit humorous as the other day I broke down and purchased a new small snowblower to use in forecasted storm.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I thought of you this morning seeing the weather up North/Midwest. BRRRRR!! Y’all take good care of yourselves up there in the Frozen Tundra!

      • kenoshamarge Says:

It is supposed to be really cold today and tomorrow. So I will stay inside except to take care of the poor critters that have to endure this cold. Every year we find a few little birds that don’t make it and we are sad.

After tomorrow the weather is supposed to moderate and be more normal for this time of year and no snow in sight for at least 5 days. Once my limbs thaw out from walking to all the bird feeders I’ll do a happy dance.

  2. kenoshamarge Says:

How nice that someone did that for you! I wish someone nice would just shovel the end of the driveway. That’s where the heavy stuff is dumped courtesy of the snowplows. Since we live on Sheridan Road we get a lot of snow plows. A lot. And as soon as you shovel the end of the driveway out they cruise by and fill it up.

We have a small electric snow blower and it is handling the light snow easily. But there is no way we would even think of trying the end of the driveway – waist high – with anything less than a big heavy duty snow blower. So it’s snow shovel for Lou and his poor bad shoulder.

I can’t even think about shoveling the heavy stuff. I did take my little kiddie shovel Lou bought me and clear the front steps and from the house to the sidewalk paralleling the street. Lou is in full hissy fit mode so I won’t do any more.

    • piper Says:

The good news is that it all melts in the spring so take care and DO not overdo otherwise we readers will be upset along with Lou.

I hear you about the snow plows throwing all the hard plaque back into cleared drives which required either shoveling or heavy duty snowblowers.

    Jesus Is The Reason

In Bethlehem, God gave to us
    The source of Christmas joy;
A star shown on a miracle:
The virgin birth of a boy.

He was born both God and man,
    A Savior for us all,
The way to get to our heavenly home,
If we just heed His call.

So as we shop and spend and wrap
    And enjoy the Christmas season,
Let’s keep in mind the sacred truth:
    Jesus is the reason.

Whoopi Goldberg Compares Celebrating Christmas to Getting an Abortion

Goldberg seemed not to realize exactly how offensive this statement would be to pro-life Christians. Her remarks literally compared the birth of the Christ child to the death of millions of unborn babies.

I know so many people are so offended on so many levels about so many trivial things that saying you are offended is like crying wolf.

Despite that I have to say, I am really, seriously offended by this scum and how she tries to justify the unjustifiable.

Abortion and the right to infanticide has truly become the liberals religion.

The new propaganda that is sweeping our campuses of women putting on the hijab to show solidarity with the Muslim Community is disturbing. WHY? Why are they doing this?? Muslims in this country fare FAR better than JEWS in this country, but I don’t see people putting on yarmulkes or anything else to show their solidarity with Jews.

This feels like brainwashing. And this time, it took place at BYU: https://www.ksl.com/?sid=42580806&nid=148

    • kenoshamarge Says:

I’ll show “solidarity” with Muslim women when they get the guts to stop wearing the hijab. What does covering your hear have to do with worshiping God? He’s the one that gave many of those women a glorious head of hair. Wear it proudly.

But of all the things that women do to show their individuality, following a trend like sheep is one of the most popular. Sheesh!

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

It is truly disconcerting. Our young people really are being brainwashed in this area. Heck, many of the tv shows we watch have been pushing this same meme of “Muslims as victims in the USA.” We saw several just in one week that pushed this line. Unbelievable.

        • kenoshamarge Says:

Muslims as victims as well as illegals as victims. Lou and I noticed it too. Plus one of our all time favorites, NCIS – the original with Leroy Jethro Gibbs, is suddenly all about the diversity crap.

They added 2 Hispanics and some gratuitous black guy supposedly from MI6 in Great Britain. For what? So that he and the Hispanic guy can act like a couple of adolescents arm wrestling? Good grief! I like humor but I like adult humor.

Tim and Ellie seem to just stand around so that the new “diverse” bunch can do their thing. And Tim, gain some weight back. You look terrible!

A the quality is down, the diversity is up and we are just a couple of episodes away from not watching this program again.

          • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Exactly, Marge. That is one of the shows abt which I was thinking. I am very disappointed to see them go down this road. Ellie’s whole lament thing abt Gitmo recently was just too much. Ugh.

Stephanopoulos’ Wife: Our 14-Year-Old Daughter Screamed ‘NO ABORTION!’ After Horrifying Trump Win

While appearing on a show that lowers the collective IQ of the nation by at least one standard deviation, The View, Ali Wentworth, wife of ABC News Objective News Anchor™ George Stephanopoulos explained what Election Night was like at the Stephanopoulos/Wentworth home: “It involves my 14-year-old getting upset about the election and screaming ‘NO ABORTION!’ really loudly, and I was like, ‘you haven’t kissed a boy yet. Don’t use that term so flippantly.’”

Perhaps Ms. Wentworth isn’t self-aware enough to realize that the child is simply expressing the “values” she learned from her parents. Evidently abortion is the primary concern of those in that household. That’s disgusting.

Facebook Unveils Plan To Defeat ‘Fake News’: Rely on Leftist Fact-Checkers

    By Ben Shapiro

Facebook pledges that the fact-checking organizations won’t skew left, but fact-checking organizations like PolitiFact routinely skew their analyses in favor of the left, fact-checking the “implications” of claims or disputing poll data in favor of poll data they like better without debunking the original poll data, for example; Politifact twice rated President Obama’s lies about keeping your health-care plan “half-true” before labeling it their “lie of the year.”

In fact, only five organizations in the United States qualify for Facebook’s fact-checking status: Politifact, FactCheck.org, Snopes, The Washington Post, and ABC News. All skew to the left politically.

This is a disaster for news coverage. It’s an attempt to restore gatekeepers who have a bias as the ultimate arbiters of truth. If these organizations begin questioning articles and penalizing outlets for simple political disagreements rather than outright factual falsities, conservatives will have to go elsewhere for their news.

Since I don’t go to Facebook for my news I don’t care. I don’t rely on ANY social media for news. I also don’t allow “fact-checkers” to decide what I believe. Who checks the fact-checker? Which ones really check facts and which ones are just propagandists for one side or the other.

I also wouldn’t trust anything, anytime, anywhere that came from lefty liar Mark Zuckerberg.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

But of course they are. They are so freakin’ clueless – or they think WE are…

The Progressive Echo Chamber Explained In One Roundtable

When The New Republic decided to publish a roundtable considering President Obama’s legacy, it was no surprise to see the conversation dominated by Obama’s race, Hillary Clinton’s gender, and the disparate (and therefore necessarily oppressive) race and gender of many of their Republican opponents.

After Donald Trump’s surprise win, most progressives are not willing to engage in a discussion of what, if anything, went wrong within their movement. Obama and Clinton are not to be critiqued for their positions, decisions, or policies. They are blameless—oppressed and condemned merely for their race and gender. Or so many would claim.

It’s all so very simple to these simpletons, every problem everyone on the right has with Obama or Clinton is based on race or gender. Case closed. Minds closed. You just can’t fix stupid.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

No, you can’t. Their reliance on identity politics is their biggest problem, yet they cannot begin to see, or ADMIT, that. They continue to look at the superficial, the things that people cannot control by birth – their skin color and their gender – rather than on policies.

You said it – “can’t fix stupid.”

Civil discourse is one thing, but this is verbal assault! These Black Lives Matter protesters took over a Lawrence, Kansas, school board meeting and shouted profanity and insults at the members. If they have real grievences, they should address them in a respectful manner, but their behavior in this video should make them ashamed. Why won’t the mainstream media report incidents of harassment like this?

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Glad to hear you are all right.

We have a lot of snow but nothing dangerous. And so far, knock wood, no power outages.

      • mcnorman Says:

Ours was wind. I live at the bar of the Rocky Mountains and our arroyos behave like wind tunnels. It was so bad at 6am yesterday that a gust blew the trash bin onto my back. I’m really sore. Nothing is broken and the chickens were saved.

        • kenoshamarge Says:

Oh my goodness, that had to hurt. We had wind, which makes it feel so much colder but nothing like that. So glad you are all right even if hurting.

Please take care of yourself and seek medical attention if it isn’t better soon.

          • mcnorman Says:

No worries on the medical as I work for a physician. LOL I got lucky that I didn’t get hit where I have three herniated discs. I’ll survive. This is the third nasty wind event in a few months. Last ones took out the shed next door and flung it onto the electrical pole. That was a nightmare. Everyone had their meters yanked out of their walls. I live at the base of the mountain which makes for some really awful wind. Just to give you an idea, a friend in the valley had their refridgerated a/c heat unit ripped out of the house. That thing is a monster. Anyhow, glad that all of you are doing ok. This arctic air dip is something else.

It may be this kind of behavior that finally destroys the PC police. How long will we, the majority, be subjected to the tyranny of the minority?

If their delicate ears are offended by the words, “God Bless Us Everyone” then they should just stay homes. And these gutless school officials need to be replaced by someone with some common sense and decency. Or they need to grow a pair!
