Life Lessons, Friendship, and A Reunion *Weekend Open Thread*

by

Here we are in a new year. Hard to believe it is already 2017, but that leads me to some “Life Lessons We Learn Too Late,” though hopefully not TOO late to still learn from them. And hey, it is still earlier enough that if you do New Year’s Resolutions, a few of these might make it to your list.

So here are a few of those “Life Lessons” as offered as responses to a quora.com question on the topic:

1. Time passes much more quickly than you realize.

2. If you don’t take care of your body early then it won’t take care of you later. Your world becomes smaller each day as you lose mobility, continence and sight.

3. Sex and beauty may fade, but intimacy and friendship only grow.

4. People are far more important than any other thing in your life. No hobby, interest, book, work is going to be as important to you as the people you spend time with as you get older.

5. Money talks. It says “Goodbye.” If you don’t plan your finances for later in life, you’ll wish you had.

6. Any seeds you planted in the past, either good or bad, will begin to bear fruit and affect the quality of your life as you get older — for better or worse. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

The original post invites people to offer their own “Life Lessons Learned Too Late,” though it is never too late to learn something, is it? How about what life lessons you have learned from which others might learn?

Here’s one: take time to play with your friends. You’re never too old to find a way to play together, be it cards, word games, or what have you. These two below play together by racing around all over creation, but that’s because they are a horse and dog. You KNOW how I love those animals, so this is a perfect combination to show how friends play together is done (h/t IHeartHorses.com):

Aren’t they just amazing? The dog gives the horse a run for his money, that’s for sure! And she is also smart in figuring out trajectories to intercept the horse when he takes off. Smart! And they look like they are having a ton of fun. That is the point of playing with friends, isn’t it? To have fun? These two definitely have something to teach on that level. I know I have a huge smile on my face after watching them. I hope you do, too.

Another “Life Lesson” might be to not shy away from a reunion with friends from the past. The following reunion is a beautiful one to behold as three horses are reunited after one of them lived elsewhere for a bit (h/t IHeartHorses.com):

This might also be a lesson in never giving up hope or dreams. That Sue was able to get this handsome boy back after so much time had passed speaks to the power of hope lived and dreams fulfilled.

And it also speaks to the power of reunions between old friends (along with the power of play). Whatever had happened in the past was the past, but here they were all together, reunited at long last. It was as if no time had passed at all.

I imagine that many of us have friends like that. We might not see them often, or even for years, but once we are reunited, it is as if no time had come between us at all. That is the beauty of real friendships. They stand the test of time no matter how much time has passed.

One last “Life Lesson,” allowing our past to inform us, to teach us, and to make us stronger, as Templeton Thompson sings about in the following piece:

Yep, getting to that place in your life where there are no regrets is definitely a Life Lesson worth learning, and definitely worth passing along. Every road we take makes us who we are, and teaches us something. And yes, hopefully makes us “stronger in the broken places.”

That’s it for me. Again, I invite you to share what “Life Lessons” you have learned that you can pass along. It’s never too late to impart some wisdom.

This is the Weekend Open Thread. Have at it!

One of the most important things I’ve learned in 72 years on this earth is to never say never.

Never say things can’t get worse – they can.

Never say things can’t get crazier – they do.

And never say you won’t do something because it makes it that much harder when you find that you must.

I usually say, I don’t think I would ever now instead of the “never” word. It makes eating my own words more palatable.

Great subject for a post Amy! Lots to think about and I thinking is always a good thing to do. Always is not like never is it?

Thanks, Marge – glad you liked it!

And thank you for your words of wisdom, too! You are right abt “never” – it does “always” come back to bite you, doesn’t it? 🙂

Wow: Millennials ‘Make History’ at Passion Conference by Sponsoring 7,000 Kids Across the Globe

You might have heard that 50,000 young Christians ascended on Atlanta, Georgia, earlier this week for the Passion 2017 conference, but did you know something quite profound happened beyond the inspirational sermons and worship music?

As it turns out, Passion founder Louie Giglio and his team typically come up with a worthwhile charity to encourage Millennial conference attendees to give to — and this year, they brought about a mass sponsorship of children listed with Compassion International, a Christian humanitarian aid group. And the results are astounding.

“We believe worship and justice are two sides of the same coin and always want to be part of impacting the globe with justice, compassion, and the saving name of Jesus,” read a post published to the Passion Facebook page on Friday. “We set out to make history at #Passion2017 and [were] blown away when the attendees … sponsored 7,000 children.”

Nice to read a positive article about young people. Sometimes we think there are nothing but pinheads and snowflakes in the millennial generation. This proves that just isn’t so. How refreshing and inspiring.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh my gosh – that is amazing! What a wonderful story, Marge. Thank you for sharing this. I am in awe!

And yes, nice to know that not all these young folks are as self-centered and juvenile as many of the snowflakes abt whom we hear so often.

Wow – just wow. Absolutely wonderful story, and how wonderful for all of those children!!

Jesus Told Me to Talk to You’ – Chris Pratt Recounts the Moment He Came to Faith

In a new interview, actor Chris Pratt gives God the credit for his current success as an actor and explains how feeling comfortable in his own skin has allowed him to pursue his dreams.

He also explained the very moment – when he was preparing for a big party – that a man approached him out of nowhere and completely changed his life forever.

I absolutely adored Chris Pratt in the movie the “Guardians of the Galaxy”. I know Groot was the favorite character but I liked “The Star Lord”. It must have taken him an enormous amount of courage to “come out” as a Christian in Hollywood – home of the heathens.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I love Chris Pratt and “The Guardians” movie is a fave. I cannot WAIT for the next one to come out. I think Groot is fantastic, and the trailer showing baby Groot is adorable.

But yeah – I thought he was so good in that, and I know his faith is VERY important to him (at Easter last year, he put up a huge cross). He seems like a real stand up man. I love how he talks abt his wife, Anna Faris, too. Yep – he is a good man indeed!

Thanks for this. I am going to read the entire Vanity Fair article now. Here’s the link for that: http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2017/01/chris-pratt-cover-story

For Second Year in Row, Christians the Most Persecuted Group in World

Christians continued to be the most persecuted group across the globe in 2016, according to a study.

The upcoming report from Italian-based Center for Studies on New Religions, determined that 90,000 Christians were killed for their beliefs worldwide last year and nearly a third were at the hands of Islamic extremists like ISIS. Others were killed by state and non-state persecution, including in places like North Korea.

“U.S. policy has not had a strategy for specifically addressing the persecution of Christians,” Ryan Mauro, national security analyst for the Clarion Project, told FoxNews.com “For example, very few people are even aware that Iraqi Christians began organizing to defend themselves and needed our help.”

The study also found that as many as 600 million Christians were prevented from practicing their faith in 2016.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I wish I could say I am surprised by this, but sadly, I am not. You would NEVER know it by the way Hollywood and the media in this country act – that would be Muslims as the most persecuted, of course – but those of us paying closer attention have not missed what is happening to Christians around the world…

      Sad, sad news…

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Not to mention that the Muslims that are persecuted are persecuted by other Muslims.

Just like the majority of blacks who are killed are killed by other blacks.

Facts mean nothing to some people.

Rep. Duncan Hunter removes painting depicting police as pigs

Rep. Duncan Hunter removed a controversial painting from a hallway which connects to the U.S. Capitol Friday. The painting depicts a street protest with people holding signs including “racism kills.” One protester in the foreground has the head of a wolf or a dog and is giving a black power salute. Two police officers, depicted as pigs, are pointing guns at the protester.

Rep. Lacy Clay, who represents Ferguson, Missouri, sponsored the annual art competition that resulted in this painting winning first place, though he says he did not have anything to do with selecting it. Clay has been asked to remove the painting by callers to his office and law enforcement organizations. The St. Louis County Police Association called the painting a “punch in the mouth.” Earlier this week Clay told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “Yes, some people find it offensive. I don’t find it offensive. I find it to be an expression of what one of my constituents is feeling about what he has experienced.”

Police organizations around the country don’t see it that way. Washington D.C.’s Fraternal Order of Police told the Daily Caller last month, “This piece of art, which depicts officers as pigs, is both offensive and disgusting. During a time in our society when tensions are so high that someone can be offended by a single word, this painting does nothing but attack law enforcement to its core.”

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Good for Hunter! It was unbelievably offensive, not to mention a completely bogus depiction of what happened in Ferguson. I am so sick of this crap.

That a US Rep. would have something like that hanging in the Capitol Building is despicable.

    Moonbat Marries Herself

On the rooftop of her Brooklyn apartment building this past spring, Erika Anderson put on a vintage-style white wedding dress, stood before a circle of her closest friends, and committed herself — to herself.

“I choose you today,” she said. Later she tossed the bouquet to friends and downed two shots of whiskey, one for herself and one for herself. She had planned the event for weeks, sending invitations, finding the perfect dress, writing her vows, buying rosé and fresh baguettes and fruit tarts from a French bakery. For the decor: an array of shot glasses emblazoned with the words “You and Me.” In each one, a red rose.

“It wasn’t an easy decision,” she’d noted on the wedding invitations. “I had cold feet for 35 years. But then I decided it was time to settle down. To get myself a whole damn apartment. To celebrate birthday #36 by wearing an engagement ring and saying: YES TO ME. I even made a registry, because this is America.”

I see that Chris Evans, aka Captain America is among the liberal fools. I have paid good money for my last DVD starring him. And the money I paid for “Captain America – Civil War” was a waste of money. Even “Ant Man” was better than “Civil War”. For one thing to portray Iron Man aka Tony Stark as an establishment type was idiocy.

I not only arm chair quarterback I am a critic too. At least when it comes to what movies and movie stars I will spend my money on.

I am so hoping that the new “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie, coming out in May, will not be as big a disappointment as “Civil War” was.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I am hoping it is good, too. And I am sorry to hear that abt Chris Evans. Sigh. Oh, well – whaddya gonna do? In this case, save your money, I reckon!

          Sigh.

Of course, these stars have as much right as everyone else to say what they think, but they get so preachy abt it, and think their opinion matters more than everyone else’s just because they are Hollywood stars. Um, yeah, no.

I have to say, I was relieved to see the responses Ryan Philippe gave when asked abt gun control as a result of his new show, “Shooter.” In essence, he said that things that makes sense in big cities don’t for more rural areas in which help is farther away. It was a reasoned response, something we don’t hear too much of from many folks these days…

Steelers Fan Uses His Extra NFL Game Ticket In the Most Generous Way Possible: ‘Something I’ll Never Forget’

Pittsburgh man’s kind act of generosity is going viral after he had an extra ticket to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens game on Christmas Day — and decided to give it to a random “man on the street.”

Ernest Freeman posted a Facebook message explaining that he initially planned to sell his extra ticket — that is, until he heard the song “Give Love on Christmas Day,” a song about showing love to others on the holiday.

As it turns out, there was a key lyric in the song that got Freeman thinking a bit deeper.

“In the song there’s a line about giving love to the ‘man on the street’ which gave me an idea,” he wrote. “Instead of selling the ticket I invited ‘a man on the street’ to the game.”
