Having The Time Of Their Lives *Weekend Open Thread*

by

Yesterday morning on HLN, the host, Robin Meade, had a clip of a newlywed couple doing the “Dirty Dancing” dance to the iconic tune,  “I Had The Time Of My Life,” performed by Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley.

Ironically, just the day before, this song was playing in the grocery store when I was there. I caught myself thinking, as people around me were singing it, that it is a really good song. So when it came on the tee-vee, showing the couple doing the dance made famous by Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, I had to go look it up to see if I could find the entire dance by the couple.

Well, I only found a little clip of theirs, but turns out a whole bunch of newlyweds have performed this dance to “I Had The Time Of My Life,” and yes – did the lift, too. Here are my two favorites. The first one has the original dance up in the corner, and you can see how well this couple, Kevin and Elodie, did in matching Grey and Swayze:

Wasn’t that great? They did such a good job.

This was my other favorite one. I like how they show the couple, Terra and Drake, learning the dance. Here’s theirs:

Fantastic, wasn’t it? Of course, I now have the song stuck in my head.

One of the things I love about the dance in particular is when all the people join in near the end. I don’t know why it is, but i just love when there are the big group dances like that. And it can be just about any kind of music from Country Line Dances to popular music like the one above.

One of my favorite scenes from the movie, “Ella Enchanted,” is at the end of the movie. You guessed it – it’s a big group dance:

Isn’t that fun? Just makes me smile (and yes, Anne Hathaway and Minnie Driver did their own singing. Both of them are singers in addition to acting.).

And since I mentioned Country Line Dancing, you know I have to share some of that style, too. It’s kind of like Irish step dancing, only in cowboy boots. I like that the dancers in the video below have such a wide age range:

What fun, right? If I was just a few years younger…

Oh, sure, I used to dance back in the day before my knees were total crap.  Of course, I am of a certain age in which Disco was the dance du jour, and I loved it. Still love it, for that matter. I mean, really- how can you NOT love a Disco dance like this one:

How much fun was that? Like I said, I am from a certain era, so I understand if others aren’t as enthusiastic about this form of dance, but it makes me tap my toes and smile, so there you have it.

But if Ballet is more your thing, another style I love, here’s a pretty cool group dance featuring ballerinas dancing to a pop song from the Ballet movie, “Center Stage”:

Can you believe all of the pointe work these young women did? Wow, really impressive.

Heck, all of these forms of dancing are impressive, and all take a great deal of talent, from the newlywed couples to the pros. I love it all, and just marvel at their abilities.

I hope that these videos made you tap your feet some too, and maybe help get a spring in your step. And good luck getting some of these songs out of your head. I still have them stuck there, but I guess it could be worse!

That’s it for me. Feel free to share more dancing, or news stories or whatever else is on your minds. After all, this is the Weekend Open Thread. Have at it!

I used to love to dance. I wasn’t anything special but I had a lot of enthusiasm. My day was before disco and we had many names for what we did but you’ve seen them all on old videos of Dick Clark dance programs – most still in black and white.

I love to watch dancing and still watch a lot of the old MGM musicals for the dancing. Cyd Clarisse was my favorite although Ginger Rodgers was great. (Remember she did everything Fred Astaire did only backwards and wearing heel.)

I don’t watch Dancing with the Stars anymore because I am not in favor of part of the judging being a popularity contest. But I do enjoy watching a clip of some of the best dancing from time to time.

Those kids in the Line Dance were amazing and fun to watch.

Thanks for a post of one of my favorite things even if I am not too old to do it much – I can still watch and enjoy.

Oh, Lou and I do still dance a slow dance once in a while at wedding receptions but I confess the more I shrink the less I enjoy it. A view of someone’s shirt button isn’t my idea of a good time. 😉

LOL abt the dancing now – I can appreciate that. I wish I could still dance, but I can tap my feet so there’s that!

Oh, I remember the fun dancing on Dick Clark’s show. What fun those dances were. Cool!

And those dances on the old movies are just beautiful, aren’t they?

So glad you liked the dancing, Marge!

Oh, I totally hear you abt the popularity aspect of DWTS. I don’t like that either, but I do love the dancing!

I, too, remember the “good old days” of dance, tho I was never any good, really. (Remember in first grade when we got to go to the gym and Mrs. Hardin taught us the “Virginia Reel?” Good, good memories…

The Jitterbug was my favorite although I loved to “cha-cha” and the stroll was fun too. Thanks for the memories and the music.

Oh, that is an awesome video, Helen! Those dances look like so much fun! I think the Twist was one of the first dances I learned, if I recall correctly. 🙂

I read the following article abt a new movie, “Silence.” It looks like an incredible, and moving, movie abt faith from a period centuries back in Japan:

Good to know, Marge. It’s really long – 3 hrs. I might be watching it at home once it comes out on demand. But I definitely want to see it…

        • kenoshamarge Says:

Me too. But I’ll see it at home. 3 hours? That’s 47 bathroom runs – I’d miss most of the movie.

Architect of the Capitol deems ‘pig-cop’ painting against the rules, will TAKE IT DOWN!

Well it looks like the long saga of the pig-cop painting is finally over. Uhm, in a few days.

Apparently the Architect of the Capitol says that the painting is against the rules, and he’s going to take it down – on Tuesday. Not sure why it takes so long, but that’s government for ya, I guess.

    From the Hill:

Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Wash.), a former sheriff, asked the Architect of the Capitol on Wednesday to review whether the painting violated rules of the student art competition that prohibit “subjects of contemporary political controversy or a sensationalistic or gruesome nature.” The competition guidelines adhere to the policy of the House Office Building Commission, which is currently controlled by GOP leaders.

Speaker Paul Ryan‘s (R-Wis.) office informed Reichert on Friday that the Architect of the Capitol concluded the artwork did indeed violate the rules. The painting will be removed on Tuesday.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I was so happy to see that at The Hill. I cannot believe it has been re-hung by these Dems, and that one of them even threatened physical violence if it was removed again. THAT is the kind of mentality with which we are dealing now in CONGRESS. Good. Grief.

People that “dance” in life find even the bad times, the hard times, just a tad easier IMO.

I know that you are one of those people.

There are days when I can barely walk across the floor. But even then if I hear some classic rock playing chances are I will dance a step or two. And I will feel better for it. Maybe it just lets me know I’m still alive and kicking. And that is always a good thing.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

What a great observation, Marge. That is spot on!

And thank you – I appreciate that! I have to admit that yes, even with the achy breaky body, I just cannot stop myself, like after watching the wedding videos, I was whistling away dancing a few steps after I walked away from the computer to do something else. Even though I pay for it afterward, it is always worth it at the time because it makes my soul happy. 🙂

Love that you do too – I am not surprised to learn that, though. And yes, being reminded that you’re still “alive and kicking” is an excellent thing indeed!

To depart from the fun for a moment, seems Trump’s (and Obama’s Under Secretary) pick for the VA is respected by Veterans Groups:http://thehill.com/policy/defense/314326-trumps-surprise-va-pick-known-as-turnaround-artist

    That’s some good news…

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Much as I loathe the man he has done a few good things.

The constant whining from the left is almost entertaining as they seem determined to prove to most people that they are nuttier than Trump.

Then there are the #NeverTrumpers who are still bellyaching about the primary let alone the general election has passed tiresome and become crazier than the man they call crazy.

I tend to listen to groups that know what they’re talking about when it comes to appointments. If the vets groups think Trump made the right call then I tend to believe them. If a politician says the right call or a “reporter” says wrong I tend to ignore.

      • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Great point – yes – if the groups directly affected are pleased, than that says a lot more than if it comes from the media or politicians.

I was just thinking abt how insane it is that people like Rep. Lewis are still calling Trump’s Presidency, “Illegitimate.” That is an affront to our democracy, IMO, and someone who is an ELECTED official should know better, much less ACT better. He and the other Dems boycotting Trump’s Inauguration are acting like a bunch of spoiled children. They are an embarrassment, and I say that as someone who loathes Trump, as you know.

I am also disgusted that people who have agreed to perform are being bullied so much so that they are having to rescind their acceptance. That is SO wrong on SO many levels, especially as it comes from the “tolerant” Left.

Along those lines, I was pleased to see that Zoe Saldana, from a bunch of movies, including “Guardians of the Galaxy,” called out Hollywood for being bullies (and no, she is not a Trump supporter, but she clearly has her head on her shoulders): https://www.yahoo.com/news/zoe-saldana-hollywood-bullied-trump-035518571.html

Oh, and Nicole Kidman also called them out saying it is time to accept that Trump is the President-Elect and get on with it, as the article above notes.

It is just ridiculous how these people are acting. Grow the hell up already. WOW.

        • kenoshamarge Says:

Wow, good for Saldana! She is spot on! You don’t have to like or support a candidate to think they should get an even break.

I love her “Gamora” character and am looking forward to the 2nd Guardians movie.

I wonder how they get her skin so evenly green all over like that. It’s actually kind of pretty once you get used to it.

I didn’t realize she played Neytiri in Avatar. She was blue in that one but her face was changed a lot too.

But 38 years old? Good lord I would have guessed 30 at the most!

Christian and Feminist Groups Team Up to Challenge Obama’s Bathroom Mandate

Two forces that could not be more polar opposite are partnering for a noble cause: to challenge President Obama’s bathroom mandate. Last year, the administration told schools they had to allow anyone who identified as transgender into the bathroom of their choice. If they refused to enforce the rule, they would be refused federal funding.

Family Policy Alliance, the public policy partner of Focus on the Family, has joined with Women’s Liberation Front (WoLF) because both groups are concerned how the mandate will endanger women and girls.

Kara Dansky, the chair of WoLF’s Board of Directors, acknowledged that their two organization may differ on issues ranging from abortion to gay rights, but when it comes to privacy and safety for women, they find some common ground.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Well, what the HELL took so long for Feminist groups to stand up to this idiotic, offensive, policy? I mean, really – what took them so long to stand up for Title IX to not be bastardized by the DOJ unilaterally without the Legislature making changes to the law??

And where the hell was the CONGRESS in telling the DOJ that they could NOT make legislative changes without running it through Congress first?

This whole thing has been a clear appeasement without thought, care, or concern for women and girls in this country. It is abt damn time women’s groups started to take notice.

    How to Get Into Heaven

A man dies and meets St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. Peter says to the man, “Here’s how it works. You need to have one hundred points to get into heaven. You tell me about all the good things you’ve done. They are all worth a certain number of points. If your total is one hundred or more, you can come in.”

“Well,” says the man. “I was happily married to the same woman for 52 years. I never looked at another woman. I was attentive and loved her dearly.”

“That’s great,” says St. Peter. “That’ll be two points.”

“Hmmm,” says the man. “This is going to be harder than I thought. Well, I attended church regularly, volunteered my time and tithed faithfully.”

“Wonderful,” says St. Peter, “That’s worth another point.”

“One point!” says the man. “Okay, okay. I was involved with a prison ministry for twenty-five years. I went into the prison, at least monthly, and shared Jesus with them.”

“Wow!” says St. Peter. “That’s another two points!”

“Only two points!” says the man. “At this rate, it’ll be only by the grace of God that’ll I’ll ever get into this place.”

“Bingo!” says St. Peter. “That’s one hundred points! Come on in.”

Some of us may worry as the end of our lives draw near that we didn’t live the kind of life we should have. We may now, when it’s too late to “fix” things see the error of our ways.

The hope is always in the “Grace of God”. And that is in the end our salvation.

It gives hope to those of us who know we aren’t perfect but want to be and have come to try to be.

Cleveland Cavaliers’ Star Asks for Prayers for Daughter Born 5 Months Premature

NBA star J.R. Smith announced the birth of his third daughter Saturday, but what was supposed to be celebratory news turned solemn when the baby was born five months prematurely.

Dakota Smith, now 8 days old, weighed a mere one pound at birth.

In the announcement made on Uninterrupted, the video platform created by Smith’s Cavaliers teammate, Lebron James, Smith and his wife asked fans to pray for their daughter.

    http://www.faithwire.com/2017/01/10/cleveland-cavaliers-star-asks-for-prayers-for-daughter-born-5-months-premature/

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, no – that poor little thing! I sure hope she pulls through. Good of Smith’s teammates to put out a call for prayers for her. Bless her, and her family…

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Even if she pulls through she will have a long hard time of it. I just pray they are all up to how difficult this is. God was good enough to provide her with parents that love her – not modern medicine must do it’s thing and prayer to help.

Funny how this tiny mite is a baby worth praying for when so many are being flushed from some woman’s body. This should really illustrate how wrong that is. This is a baby. Not a fetus and not unwanted tissue – this is a baby, their baby and they want her and love her.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

So true. We have friends whose baby was born prematurely (she is a little over a year old now). It has been a tough road for her with one health thing after another, though none life threatening, thank heavens.. Thankfully for them, the dad is in the Air Force, so they have good insurance. But yeah, it is hard. She is a cutie, though, and we are so glad she made it.

I was thinking abt that the other day, Marge, as I watched the news and womens’ groups were going ballistic abt a state (Kentucky, maybe?) that had made a 20 week cut off and how that impacted the ease of women getting an abortion. I couldn’t help but think that it SHOULDN’T be easy to terminate a baby.

And 20 weeks is WAY too late, in my opinion – WAY too late. I cannot believe that is even allowed in this country, much less that women are demanding it. WTH??

          • kenoshamarge Says:

I used to think that pro-choice and pro-life were just different opinions. I was even pro-choice at one point in my life even though I knew I would NEVER have an abortion.

For me the minute I was pregnant, that was a baby. My baby and anyone that tried to hurt my baby would have to get through me to get to my child. The idea of simply tossing that life away is too horrible for me to understand.

Too many women on the left have made a religion of their “reproductive rights”. That is, IMO, evil. It is IMO, infanticide. What kind of a country have we become?

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I was too, Marge. I accept that having safe, legal, and RARE abortions in the first trimester is here to stay, but the march toward killing fetuses after 3 months to 5 months and beyond is appalling. How in the world did we come to devalue human life so much in this country? How did that happen?? It boggles the mind.

I love children, and would have loved to have children, but ovarian cancer made that impossible. That makes it even harder for me to understand how a woman could even think of getting rid of a child late in a pregnancy.

That said, I totally hear you – I imagine I would have felt the same had I ever been pregnant.

It has become a religion, sadly so.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

LOL – it was quite the game, and I am sure a total heartbreaker for Dallas, especially after they had come back to tie it. But their defense let them down all night, and the last series bore that out.

That said, the Packers earned this win. Rodgers made some incredible throws, including the one that set up the game winning field goal. Yep – they earned it and deserved it.

      Congratulations on your team’s win!

      • kenoshamarge Says:

I think the win was especially sweet because they won without Rogers’ favorite target, Jordy Nelson.

Steve Deace predicted Dallas would win based on Nelson not being able to play. I sent him an email with just the score.

Never underestimate Aaron Rogers. Most quarterbacks have some kind of slump during the season. Rogers had his mid season and is now playing at his best. And his best is second to none.
