Coincidence? Nope – “Big God” *Weekend Open Thread*

by

Football is over for now with the Patriots having taken a come-from-behind-first-ever-OT-Super Bowl game. They were not my team of choice, not by a long shot, but the Falcons, unfortunately, stopped playing their game, apparently thinking they had it in the bag. Not to mix sports metaphors or anything, but haven’t they heard the phrase that “it ain’t over ’til the fat lady sings”? Uh, yeah. Well, congratulations to the Patriots – they earned it.

But it is not about the Patriots or any of their players I want to write, though I could, as the numbers are increasing of Patriots who are declining to meet President Trump. That is their right, of course, and other athletes chose not to meet with President Obama, so there is that. I dunno – I would not have been thrilled to meet either one of them really, but it is the WHITE HOUSE, after all, and the President of the United States, like him or not. Being able to go into the People’s House, and see parts of it one might not see on the tour and all would be pretty cool regardless. But hey – they are big boys – they can do as they choose.

And speaking of ‘”big boys,” Tim Tebow, former Professional football player and now baseball player, was interviewed by Harry Connick, Jr. recently about a big game in which Tebow played.

But before I get to that game, I have to say something about Tim Tebow. As many of you know, Tebow is a Christian, one whose faith is not hidden under a bushel basket but is something about which he talks openly. As a result of that, I have long contended that he got the short end of the stick by the sports media and by professional football teams. He was NEVER given the kinds of chances and opportunities to succeed that far more mediocre players who are STILL playing have gotten.

That is not hyperbole. There is proof of just how great a quarterback Tebow was compared to many other great quarterbacks. Check out some of these stats from when Tebow was playing:

[…]

Through 16 starts, Tebow has a far better touchdown pass-to-interception ratio (17 touchdowns-9 interceptions) than Peyton Manning (26-28), Brees (15-15), Stafford (28-23), Bradford (18-15), Elway (10-19), Aikman (12-25) and Young (9-16). Tebow’s rate is also better than Eli Manning’s (21-14), and the same as Aaron Rodgers’ (23-12).

According to these key factual measures of an NFL passer (wins, touchdown passes, interceptions, playoff performance) Tebow is off to a better start as an NFL passer than many of the great passing quarterbacks in NFL history. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

So, yeah – I think Tebow got a raw deal and the condescension he has gotten from many in the media as a result of his faith is just infuriating. MANY athletes are Christians and SHOW it when they play, like crossing themselves before they go up to bat, or pointing to the Heavens after scoring a td, or what have you. Why Tebow was singled out for such ridicule has always raised my ire.

But how Tebow was treated so disparately is not the point of this post. Rather, it is something that happened in a big time comeback win in the post-season when Tebow played for the Broncos. He took his team to a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. And what that was is pretty wild. Some chalk it up to “coincidence.” Not Tim Tebow, though. He chalks it up to a “big God.” Check out the above-referenced interview with Harry Connick, Jr., below:

If you would prefer not to watch the video, this is the gist of what happened in that big game in which Tim Tebow wore “John 3:16” under his eyes, same as he had three years to the day before the big game. From Faith Wire:

[…]

An ecstatic Tebow was celebrating with teammates in the locker room and preparing to speak with the press, when the Broncos PR guy approached him almost too giddy to speak.

“Timmy, do you realize what happened?”

“Yeah, we just beat the Steelers and we’re going to play the Patriots!”

“No, I don’t think you realize what just happened. It’s exactly three years later from when you wore John 3:16 under your eyes. During the game you threw for 316 yards, your yards per rush were 3.16, your yards per catch were 31.6,  the ratings for the game was 31.6 and the time of possession was 31.6.”

During the game 90 million people googled John 3:16 and once again it was the #1 trending item on Facebook and Twitter. […] (Click here to read the rest.)

How wild is that? I mean, really – those numbers are just incredible. I don’t know if God is a football fan or not, or that praying to God is going to give one team the edge over another. I mean, heck – the other team is probably praying away that they are going to get the win.

But there is no denying the numbers. That would be one helluva big coincidence that on so many different levels, the numbers kept coming up with 3 – 1 – 6 in them. God may not choose favorites on the gridiron, but that doesn’t mean God can”t use a football game to get a message across. And Tm Tebow is a pretty good vehicle for spreading that message, I’d say.

So, yeah – football is done for now, and baseball is about to start (2/15 for the Yankees to meet in camp!!), but hey – a “big God” moment like that is worth a mention no matter what sporting season it is, am I right?

Lots going on – some of it is the same-o same-o as the past few weeks, like the whole travel hold thing by Trump. Yep, people are still going nuts even though they have ZERO idea about what they are being nuts:

Sigh. Those are the leaders of Tomorrow. Don’t you feel better now?

Okay. I cannot POSSIBLY leave you with something like that after the very cool “Big God” moment Tim Tebow referenced above. That would just be WRONG, especially on the weekend.

Instead, I will leave you with this message from Dr. Alveda King for Sen. Elizabeth Warren. It’s a God-moment, too:

Can I have an Amen? Preach on, Dr. King, preach on!

It’s all yours now, friends. This is the Weekend Open Thread.

Thanks for this post Amy, I love the Tebow information.

I don’t know if God is a foot ball fan but I’m betting he’s a big Tebow fan. After all Tebow professing his faith openly, frequently and in spite of persecution.

Granted he hasn’t been fed to the lions, yet, but the vipers in the media have tried to eat him alive and send him to the showers – permanently. And it appears they succeeded.

WTH is wrong with teams with mediocre quarterbacks that didn’t pick him up? Is the anti-Christian sentiment that strong in them? Or are they simply cowards that fear the bullying of the liberal left? Whatever, their loss is baseball’s gain.

I don’t think that it is the atheists in our midst that are the big problem. I think it’s the Christianity haters. They believe in God, but they hate him.

I can relate to being angry with God – I was for a long time after I lost my little brother and my mother. Both far too young and both so dearly loved and missed. Life isn’t that simple. I learned that and hate destroys those that hate eventually.

Thanks so much, Marge – I have to say, the more I learn abt Tebow, the more impressed I am with him. The reaction of his baseball teammates to him indicate how beloved he is by them. Too bad the football teams who had their chances with him gave him so little opportunity to prove himself. Seriously, when I look at some of the quarterbacks out there who continue to have a career, I just SMH. Tebow’s stats tell the story – as does his lack of a career in the NFL.

It is confusing though – RGIII, the former Redskins-now-Browns quarterback ALSO takes a knee and prays when he scores a touchdown, but that’s okay. I guess because Tebow has been SO outspoken abt abortion and how his mother was counseled to abort him and didn’t, that liberals just hate him no matter HOW good he is – both on and off the field.

I guess people just take it personally when someone else is just a good, decent human being. Ahem.

I can understand being angry with God, especially when one has suffered the kinds of losses you have endured, Marge. God can take it, that I know, though I imagine God would rather people feel the embrace of loving kindness and support. Sometimes it just takes a while, and we just have to be mad. That’s okay. We’re peeps – that’s what we do!

LOL – love it abt God being a Tebow fan – I bet so, too…

I LOVED this! So, so cute – what a precious little baby!

We have gotten our animals spayed and neutered for YEARS, but we rescued a Treeing Walker Coonhound who turned out to be a week pregnant. She had 7 beautiful, healthy puppies. What an AMAZING experience that was being with her, and welcoming those new little puppies into the world.

Here they are at meal time – note the one who got up close and personal with his food:

      • kenoshamarge Says:

There’s one in every little that sits in the dish for some reason. It’s cute but then a mess to clean up on the pup, or kitten as they do it too.

Adorable puppies. But I’ve yet to see one that wasn’t and that I didn’t want – right here and right now.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

I know, right? Yes, it was a mess to clean up, but they were SOOOO cute, it hardly seemed like work!

And I completely understand – there aren’t many I don’t want, either! Fortunately, we were able to find good homes for all of them, including one who went to a vet tech. Even though she and her family have moved a few times (her husband is in the Navy), I get to see photos of her “puppy” on Facebook. 🙂

    Exodus 20:8-11

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

I wonder how many of us, while professing to be good Christians, remember this, which is the 4th Commandment. I know I haven’t, in a very long time.

The quote below is how I was taught it in church. And it’s been a long time since I really, thoughtfully and completely, read those words.

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God: in it you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger that is within your gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.

    • kenoshamarge Says:

Sorry to seem “preachy”. Now that I have health issues that don’t allow me to “go” to church I seek to find ways to bring church and God into my home. Especially on Sunday. I have to work on that a bit more too. Every day belongs to God and I think far too many of us that call ourselves Christians think that being in Church and being a Christian once a week is enough. It isn’t.

Oops there I go being “preachy” again.

      • cindyindie Says:

        LOL—preach on, Sister Marge.
The only way I can get the boys to rest after church on Sunday is to remind them about Sunday or Sabbath being the day of rest. They are not very pleased that that’s the case! But there IS precedent…LOL

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

ROTFL – that is too funny, Cindy! I can see that conversation now to young boys abt the Sabbath being a day of rest! 😀

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

You can preach away ANY time, my friend!

It is a hard thing to remember to have a day off, though I have long preached that myself (hard for ministers to do, ironically – always being on call and everything). The self-care is IMPORTANT, and without us taking some down time, we end up getting worn out, and then aren’t much good to those around us or those whom we are supposed to be serving.

It is one of the Big 10, and we would do well to remember that we humans need some time to just be.

My dear friend down on Grand Cayman is a Seventh Day Adventist. She is very intentional abt taking the Sabbath as a day or rest. Of course, so do observant Jews (or at least the conservative ones). So some do, but most of us do not…

Thank you for this very important reminder on the Sabbath!

      Ahahaha…

      • kenoshamarge Says:

Humor helps too. I’ve always thought that God has a wonderful sense of humor – he would have to have one to put up with us, his creations. And just look at the platypus and kangaroos and other wacky animals. I think he was pulling our funny bone with them.

        • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Oh, without a doubt a sense of humor is evident in creation! There are some WILD animals out there, and no doubt God had SOME fun coming up with them!

And yeah – we people can be a handful…

Oh, the Irony: Liberals Threaten to Homeschool Kids After DeVos Confirmed as Education Secretary

In protest of school choice advocate Betsy DeVos becoming the next education secretary, some liberals threatened to homeschool their children. Lost on them, apparently, is the irony of that threat.

DeVos, who’s invested in charter and private schools and called for their expansion, is also a big proponent of homeschooling, arguing that it’s “another perfectly valid educational option.”

    http://townhall.com/tipsheet/leahbarkoukis/2017/02/12/oh-the-irony-progressives-threaten-to-homeschool-kids-after-devos-confirmed-as-education-secretary-n2284838

I’m not so much struck by the irony as by the ignorance of those who are having a hissy fit about DeVos. They just protest without really knowing what they are protesting. Ignorance is rampant among the protesters. In fact it is an epidemic.

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Indeed, they do seem to be protesting without having a CLUE abt why they are so angry. It is just idiotic.

I have to say, when protesters blocked DeVos from a DC school, that was WAY over the line. Not only did they impede her freedom of movement, but her ability to do her job. And last I heard, it isn’t like DC schools were the cream of the crop. They could use some help.

      Stupid. Just stupid.

LOVE the post, Cuzin. You are so right on about poor Tim Tebow and the utter disrespect and hate he has received!
Anyone who proclaims his Christianity like he does in this day and age is absolutely for real! Why else would he leave himself open to that kind of grief. He’s the real deal.
I just love what Alveda King had to say, too! The fact that Warren would manipulate and bait Senators to make it appear that they dislike Mrs. King!! Who would do that to the King family??? Make it look like Republicans can’t stand Mrs. King?!! They have no shame.
And your Sen. Tim Scott is a blessing to So. Carolina, and the nation! What a treasure!

    • cindyindie Says:

when I wrote “they have no shame” I mean of course Dems!

    • Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy Says:

Thanks so much, Cuz! It truly is remarkable that an athlete of Tebow’s ability would essentially be a source of derision all because he is a strong Christian and principled man. What does that say abt us?? Yet he hasn’t let these naysayers stop him, and continues to do good work for his life’s work. He should be lauded as a role model for all young people – and many adults, too.

Oh, you ain’t only kidding abt the Dems’ having no shame. The sanctimony that is dripping from their mouths, the manipulations and downright lies they are spewing, are so far overboard it isn’t funny, yet their minions continue to scream, stomp their feet, and defend them.

      I am literally SMH…

      So nice to *see* you!!
